Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Each recovered signature also writes two small markers: one keyed by the object hash (rs_h) and one keyed by the sign hash (rs_s). These markers let late shares be filtered out. InstantSend truncates recovered signatures for lock inputs and for fully confirmed locks. Truncation deletes the object but keeps both markers. The age cleanup could only find the markers by reading the object, so once the object was gone it dropped the time index entry and left both markers on disk. Every truncated signature therefore left two records in the database permanently. The growth rate has not been measured.

A related problem: an old time index entry left by a truncated signature could later delete a newer object written under the same id.

What was done?

  • Markers now record when they were written. rs_h values gain a trailing timestamp, rs_s values become a timestamp, and a new rs_e index orders the markers by time.
  • Expiry walks rs_e and deletes a marker only if its stored time still matches the index entry. A refreshed marker is therefore never deleted by a stale entry. Expiry also clears the matching cache entry.
  • The object cleanup now deletes an object only if the object's own write time matches the rs_t entry being processed. A stale rs_t entry can no longer delete a newer object for the same id.
  • rs_e is now the only path that deletes markers, for Platform signatures as well.
  • Writes, truncations, cleanup and the cached HasRecoveredSigFor* lookups are serialized by the existing cs_cache mutex. A lookup can no longer re-cache a marker that cleanup has just deleted. Lookups made under cs_main wait on that lock, so every scan made under it examines at most 1000 entries per pass. An expired backlog, for example after downtime, drains over several passes instead of blocking in one.
  • Existing markers in the old format are adopted in bounded steps. Each cleanup examines at most 1000 records per prefix and resumes from an in-memory position, so the scan goes through each prefix once per process and then stops. Old records carry no age, so each adopted marker gets one full expiry window from the time it is adopted. Markers written in the old format by an older binary after a downgrade are adopted on the next start, since switching binaries always restarts the node.

This is a Dash-specific fix. Bitcoin Core has nothing to backport.

How Has This Been Tested?

macOS arm64, existing depends build. Build, unit and functional checks were rerun for the final head:

  • make -C src dashd test/test_dash passed.
  • ./src/test/test_dash --run_test=llmq_utils_tests passed all 20 cases (159 assertions).
  • test/functional/feature_llmq_signing.py and feature_llmq_signing.py --spork21 passed.

Linux x86_64 (--enable-debug), rerun after adding the in-memory scan position commit (c186827): llmq_utils_tests passed all 20 cases, and feature_llmq_signing.py and feature_llmq_signing.py --spork21 passed.

New tests in llmq_utils_tests use the public CRecoveredSigsDb interface and reopen the database:

  • truncated_recovered_sig_markers_expire_after_reopen: the markers of a truncated signature still filter before expiry, and are gone after expiry and another reopen. This includes the case where the cache was already populated. It also checks that the pair reader used by older releases can still read the new rs_h value. On the unchanged code it fails (exit 201): both markers survive expiry and the reopen.
  • recovered_sig_reinsertion_survives_stale_expiry: an object written again under the same id, and its refreshed markers, survive the old expiry entries. On the unchanged code it fails (exit 201): the old entry deletes the new object.
  • legacy_recovered_sig_markers_migrate_with_bounded_grace: markers in the old format are adopted, kept for one window, then expire, and markers written later in the old format are adopted as well. This test covers new behavior, so its failure on the unchanged code does not prove anything about the leak.

The per-pass bound of 1000 entries was verified by inspection. No disk-growth benchmark or race stress test was run. Timestamps follow the existing wall clock with one-second resolution. A Platform object rewritten with the same hash under an old Platform time entry is a separate, pre-existing case that this change does not address.

Breaking Changes

No wire or consensus change, and no reindex is needed. The marker values and the new rs_e key extend the database format; a node running an older release can still read the new values. Markers that already exist get one expiry window after the upgrade instead of their original age. Once a truncated signature's markers expire (after -maxrecsigsage, 7 days by default), a re-relayed copy is no longer filtered by its hash. By then its quorum is normally no longer active, so the copy is rejected anyway.

Walkthrough

Recovered-signature cache lookups and writes now hold cs_cache across database operations. Writes add timestamped hash and session markers, which remain when a signature record is truncated. Cleanup migrates legacy markers and expires markers and signatures in scans of up to 1,000 entries. Tests cover marker persistence, reinsertion, and legacy-marker migration.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1868

The change fixes leaked recovered-signature markers and protects newer objects from stale expiry entries. Lock hold time during cleanup is bounded but has not been stress-tested. This is acceptable to merge, and the owner should watch for lookup latency.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of the exact head found no in-scope implementation defects: marker expiry, stale-index protection, legacy-format handling, and the regression tests match the stated fix. The commit-history suggestion is supported because the second commit repairs a compatibility regression introduced by the first. No builds or tests were run in this lane; the supplied CI snapshot shows ClangFormat passing and all four container builds queued.

🟡 Suggestion: Squash the legacy-format correction into the initial expiry fix
<commit:d413c2788b>:1

Commit 3f8e346 introduces a timestamp-read requirement during object expiry. For historical one-byte rs_r values, that read fails, but cleanup still erases the rs_t entry, leaving the object without its expiry index. The base implementation did not require this timestamp read during age cleanup. Commit d413c27 repairs that newly introduced compatibility regression and adds its regression test, so fold it into 3f8e346 before merge. This keeps the complete expiry fix atomic and avoids retaining a known-broken intermediate implementation in develop history.

Truncating a recovered signature deletes the object but keeps its hash
(rs_h) and session (rs_s) markers for late-share filtering. Age cleanup
found those markers through the object, so after a truncation it dropped
the time index entry and left both markers on disk for good.

Markers now carry their write time: rs_h values become
(type, id, time), rs_s values become the time, and a new rs_e index
orders them by (time, prefix, hash). Expiry walks rs_e and erases a
marker only while its stored time still matches, so a refreshed marker
survives a stale entry. rs_e is the only path that deletes markers,
including for Platform signatures. Older releases can still read the
extended values: rs_h is read as a pair and rs_s is only checked for
existence.

Markers in the old format are adopted by a bounded scan that resumes
from a saved cursor (rs_c) and keeps cycling, so values written by an
older binary after a downgrade are adopted too. Old markers have no age,
so each is given one full expiry window from adoption.

The object cleanup now removes an object only if its write time matches
the rs_t entry, so a stale entry cannot delete a newer object written
under the same id.

Index writes, truncations, cleanup and the cached marker lookups are
serialized by cs_cache. Lookups under cs_main wait on that lock, so
every scan made under it examines at most 1000 entries per pass, and
an expired backlog drains over several passes.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The independent marker-expiry index addresses the truncated-marker leak, but the new object timestamp check introduces a confirmed compatibility regression for historical one-byte rs_r values. The migration tests also leave persisted cursor continuation and bounded backlog draining untested. This was a static verification only; the supplied CI snapshot shows ClangFormat passing, with container builds and PR-title validation still queued.

In `src/llmq/signing.cpp`:
- [BLOCKING] src/llmq/signing.cpp:358-365: Preserve expiry for historical one-byte rs_r values
Commit 8c49d9b54509e16ef5caeca2c904c4fb4169be16 changed the four-part rs_r value from uint8_t{1} to a uint32_t timestamp. For a persisted object with that historical one-byte value, the new db->Read(..., write_time) fails because CDBWrapper::Read catches the short-stream exception and returns false. Cleanup therefore skips RemoveRecoveredSig but still erases the expired rs_t entry. Unlike the base implementation, which removed expired objects without deserializing this value, the new implementation permanently strands the by-id object and message index. Marker migration only visits rs_h/rs_s, so subsequent cleanup and database reopen do not repair this; HasRecoveredSigForId and non-Platform HasRecoveredSigForSigning continue returning true. Recognize the exact one-byte legacy value 1 when processing an expired rs_t entry, while retaining timestamp equality for current four-byte values. Add a persisted legacy-object regression with repeated cleanup, reopen, invalid-format controls, and refreshed-object protection.

In `src/test/llmq_utils_tests.cpp`:
- [SUGGESTION] src/test/llmq_utils_tests.cpp:220-225: Exercise persisted migration cursors across bounded passes
This fixture creates only three records per prefix, so each migration scan finishes before MAX_CLEANUP_ENTRIES and never persists an rs_c continuation cursor. It therefore does not exercise the new restart/resume logic or the equality check that prevents skipping the successor of a deleted cursor key. These are substantive behaviors introduced and explicitly claimed by this PR. Add more than 1000 legacy markers per prefix, reopen between passes, delete a saved cursor's marker, and verify through public marker lookups and timed expiry that the successor is adopted and later-adopted markers receive their own full grace interval. Also cover an expired backlog draining over multiple cleanup calls rather than disappearing in one pass; none of the current expiry scenarios reaches the cleanup bound.

Not changing this; the branch was removed on purpose. The one-byte rs_r value was only written by pre-v0.14.1 nodes (8c49d9b, 2019), and that same commit started writing an rs_t entry for every record. Every binary since then has run CleanupOldRecoveredSigs, which deleted those records unconditionally about 7 days after they were written, so no database that has run any post-2019 node still holds one. Develop also dropped the <v0.14.1 compatibility path deliberately in 8058867. The only way to reach this state is opening a 2019 LLMQ database with no intermediate version, which isn't a supported upgrade path, and a short rs_r value makes CDBWrapper::Read return false cleanly rather than misbehave.

I checked 8c49d9b5 and 8058867b: the timestamp format dates to 2019, and the latter explicitly removed compatibility with upgrades from before v0.14.1. The short-read behavior I described is real, but I was wrong to treat that unsupported upgrade state as a compatibility requirement for this PR. The blocking classification was unjustified, and I’m withdrawing the finding.

Withdrawn (re-reviewed at ff829d4f): Your supported-upgrade boundary is corroborated by 8058867, already in the base, which deliberately removed the pre-v0.14.1 compatibility guard. Although the historical one-byte value fails the new timestamp read, CDBWrapper::Read handles that cleanly, and I withdraw the request to restore support for that obsolete format.

Declining: the earlier cursor/bounded-pass test was removed deliberately because it asserted the MAX_CLEANUP_ENTRIES pass size and internal rs_c cursor keys rather than behavior. The kept test checks the observable outcome: legacy markers survive one window and are then gone. The cursor's resume-across-passes logic is small enough to verify from the diff.

I checked that the resume path advances only when key == start, preserving the successor when the saved key has disappeared, and I accept your decision to leave restart/resume and bounded-pass coverage to inspection for this PR.

No longer applies (re-reviewed at c1868275): The current head no longer persists rs_c migration cursors: c186827 replaces them with process-local inclusive resume positions. The requested persisted-cursor regression therefore targets behavior that no longer exists.

Static verification of the complete diff at ff829d4 found no actionable in-scope defects: timestamp-matched expiry, bounded migration, and serialized cache invalidation are consistent with the stated fix. All three prior findings were independently revalidated; cursor coverage remains intentionally deferred, obsolete-format compatibility is withdrawn, and the squash request is outdated. if examined every time only MAX_CLEANUP_ENTRIES entries and all of them valid, even if MAX_CLEANUP_ENTRIES * 100 entries exist they will never be cleaned up by this loop because cursor->Next() goes consequently and start is always 0second.

UPD: it seems irrelevant. Check this one instead: cdff273

MigrateLegacyMarkers kept its resume point in the database under rs_c and restarted from the beginning once a prefix was scanned through, so every cleanup pass kept re-reading 2000 marker values forever. The cycling existed only to adopt legacy values written by an older binary after a downgrade, and switching binaries always restarts the process.

Keep the resume point per prefix in memory instead and drop the prefix once the cursor leaves it, so each process scans the markers once. The resume point is the next key to examine rather than the last one examined, so a deleted entry needs no equal-key skip: the seek lands on its successor.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The full diff and relevant callers, persistence paths, locking, migration logic, historical formats, and regression tests were reviewed at the exact head. The marker expiry and stale-entry protections are consistent with the stated goal, and no in-scope correctness defects remain; the supplied CI snapshot reports lint and format success, while build and test jobs were skipped after an infrastructure container-build failure.

  ## Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Backports for v24.0.0-rc.4, on top of `v24.0.x` at the v24.0.0-rc.3 tag (0364ed6, #7808).

  ## What was done?

Cherry-picked (`git cherry-pick -m1 -x`) every develop merge since rc.3 that carries `backport-candidate-24.0.x`, plus eight unlabeled fixes picked after an audit of every other develop merge since rc.3 (marked † below). They are in develop merge order:

  - #7814 fix(qt): restore HTML escaping of send confirmation recipients †
  - #7851 fix(rpc): correct masternode status help for top-level service field
  - #7816 fix: check credit pool amount accumulation
  - #7828 fix: omit recovery words from invalid mnemonic errors †
  - #7822 fix: reject malformed detached quorum share batches †
  - #7810 fix(rpc): handle unavailable masternode payment inputs †
  - #7838 fix(wallet): authenticate unlock deadline extensions
  - #7792 fix: treat missing snapshots during evodb repair as repair errors
  - #7821 fix: relock encrypted wallets after HD upgrade failures
  - #7834 fix: validate Electrum import input boundaries
  - #7818 fix: return REST errors for unavailable deployment data
  - #7829 fix: preserve wallet permissions when changing passphrases
  - #7820 fix: hold chainstate lock during CoinJoin input validation
  - #7841 fix: authenticate cached InstantSend proof bytes
  - #7831 fix: bound governance object signatures and reset the governance cache
  - #7521 fix: update masternode rate limit on failed governance trigger path
  - #7866 fix: stop `masternode payments` at the genesis block
  - #7867 fix: refuse masternode list RPCs for blocks outside the active chain †
  - #7871 backport!: bitcoin#27217: wallet: Replace use of purpose strings with an enum
  - #7876 fix(consensus): capture operator key scheme changes with unchanged bytes in state diffs
  - #7875 docs(rpc): clarify getchainlockbyheight availability †
  - #7839 fix: release InstantSend tracking after mempool eviction
  - #7827 backport: partial bitcoin#35984
  - #7824 fix: retain initialized DKG sessions during inventory reads
  - #7836 backport: partial bitcoin#25812, bitcoin#29855
  - #7782 fix(wallet): persist pending-observation coin locks once the record becomes readable
  - #7881 fix: refuse to sign shared registrar updates that move the funder's coins †
  - #7858 fix: do not InstantSend-lock provider transactions
  - #7817 backport: partial bitcoin#34156 restore cleanup ownership
  - #7894 test: fix feature_pruning.py restart arguments † (needed because #7792 makes the evodb repair fatal, which the old restart arguments trip)
  - #7893 fix(net): announce sporks to new peers instead of requesting them during mnsync
  - 4a19742 (from #7859) test: follow-up for #7821: check if wallet is locked after failed upgrade instead creating brand-new scenario. Test-only, picked as its commit. Without it, #7821's `test_failed_upgrade()` expects RPC error -1 for a 257-byte mnemonic passphrase, which #7842's new precheck rejects with -8 first, so `wallet_upgradetohd.py --legacy-wallet` fails. On develop, #7859 replaced that scenario before #7842 merged. The rest of #7859 is test cleanup and docs and is left out.
  - #7842 fix(wallet): reject mnemonic passphrases that seed derivation truncates
  - #7857 fix: mine a pending ProUpServTx before a key change of its masternode
  - #7846 fix: treat pending owner keys and Platform node IDs as one conflict namespace
  - #7895 test: cover retroactive provider tx refusal, fix wording
  - #7909 feat(mining): build the masternode list incrementally during block assembly
  - #7537 fix: data races and check-then-act races in the CoinJoin server
  - #7888 fix(consensus): canonical ExtNetInfo encoding and strict netInfo decoding

34 of the 39 picks change exactly the same lines as their develop merges. #7888 and #7782 needed test-only changes (see testing), and three others needed adaptation, described in their commit messages:

  - **#7893** was merged to develop twice: f99212b with an earlier revision of its commit, then 72a5997 with the final one, so develop now announces sporks twice in the VERACK handler (a develop fix is open separately). Here the PR's final commit 45acdf3 is picked once instead of either merge. In `src/node/sync_manager.cpp`, this branch still sent `GETSPORKS` from the mnsync tick on every network, because #7847, which limited it to test chains, is not included. The request is removed entirely, as on develop. Mainnet spork values are hardcoded in `CSporkManager::GetSporkValue`, so the mainnet request had no effect.
  - **#7857** and **#7909**: develop folded `CChainstateHelper` into `Chainstate` (d5c1bd7), which is not on this branch, so the new code goes through `ChainHelper().special_tx` / `m_chain_helper.special_tx` instead of `m_special_tx`. The neighbouring develop-only `CSpecialTxProcessor::GetDeterministicMNListHash` is left out.

#7888 tightens consensus rules for ExtAddr provider transactions behind V24, so I checked it against testnet. V24 is not active there yet (the tip's CbTx is still version 3), so the chain has no ExtAddr ProTxs the new rules could reject. rc.3's own serializer always writes canonical, sorted purposes, so every ProTx it builds passes the new rules. Mixed rc.3/rc.4 networks could only split on a hand-crafted non-canonical ExtAddr ProTx mined after V24 activates. So testnet miners and masternodes should move to rc.4 before V24 is signalled.

Unlabeled develop fixes since rc.3 that were audited and left out:
  - Worth considering before the final release: #7869 (startup block replay after an unclean shutdown asserts on a quorum commitment, so recovery needs `-reindex-chainstate`; not a v24 regression), #7833 (gate signing intake before quorum retrieval, DoS hardening), #7682 (intermittent `relic_conf.h` parallel-build failure).
  - Left for 24.1: #7812, #7826, #7844, #7847, #7850, #7868, plus the routine upstream backports (#7780, #7806, #7830, #7855, #7856, #7862, #7863, #7865, #7883, #7884, #7898, #7906), refactors (#7805, #7878, #7880), and CI, docs and test-only changes.

One CI-only commit comes last. It takes only the `ci/test` hunks of 6f71fa5 (#7901), which make `ci/test/00_setup_env_native_{multiprocess,tsan}.sh` honor `DEPENDS_ARCH`. Pull requests into `v24.0.x` run develop's workflow files (`pull_request_target`), and since #7901 those check the depends cache on x86_64 runners and pass the aarch64 build arch in `DEPENDS_ARCH`. Without the hunks, `linux64_multiprocess / Build depends` fails on any depends cache miss (`Build runner computes HOST=aarch64-linux-gnu but check-cache used x86_64-pc-linux-gnu`). Without `DEPENDS_ARCH` the scripts still use `uname -m`, so this branch's own push CI is unchanged.

No version change is needed. `configure.ac` is already 24.0.0 with `CLIENT_VERSION_IS_RELEASE` false, so the build takes its version string from the `v24.0.0-rc.4` tag.

  ## How Has This Been Tested?

Built and tested at 6c02b2b on macOS arm64 against depends, with `--enable-debug --enable-werror --disable-hardening`.

  - `make check`: all unit test suites pass, including `test_dash-qt`.
  - Functional tests, all passing: `feature_evo_shares_activation.py`, `feature_governance_objects.py`, `feature_llmq_signing.py` (plain and `--spork21`), `feature_masternode_shares.py`, `feature_sporks.py`, `interface_rest.py`, `p2p_instantsend.py`, `p2p_quorum_data.py`, `rpc_masternode.py`, `rpc_psbt.py`, `rpc_quorum.py`, `wallet_backup.py`, `wallet_dump.py`, `wallet_encryption.py`, `wallet_labels.py` and `wallet_upgradetohd.py`, each with `--descriptors` and `--legacy-wallet` where it supports them.

  - Each pick's changed lines were compared with its develop merge (or, for #7893, its PR commit). They are identical except for the #7893, #7857 and #7909 adaptations above, and the #7888 test adaptation below.
  - A local macOS arm64 debug build (`--enable-debug --enable-werror`) compiled most of the tree and stopped on a single error in `src/test/evo_netinfo_tests.cpp`. #7888's new test used `CNetAddr::V2()`, the serialization-parameter API from bitcoin#25284, which this branch lacks. The pick now writes that entry through an `OverrideStream` with `ADDRV2_FORMAT`, the way `NetInfoEntry::Serialize` does on this branch (see its commit message).
  - #7782's new unit test reloads the wallet with develop's three-argument `CWallet` constructor. On this branch the constructor still takes the CoinJoin loader and an `ArgsManager`, so the test passes them the way its fixture already does (see the commit message).
  - With both test fixes, a full local `make` (`dashd`, `dash-qt`, `test_dash`, `test_dash-qt`) completes with no errors.
  - `feature_pruning.py` is an extended test that CI does not run. #7894 is included because #7792 makes its restart path fail.

  ## Breaking Changes

Carried over from the picked PRs:

  - #7876: rc.1 to rc.3 nodes that connected an affected block stored a wrong masternode list diff for it. Those nodes need `-reindex`; `-reindex-chainstate` is not enough for nodes that already marked the following block invalid.
  - #7888: stricter ExtAddr `netInfo` decoding and validation behind V24 (see above). The RFC1918 check now applies even with `-allowprivatenet`.
  - #7858: provider transactions no longer get InstantSend locks. Software that waits for an islock on a ProTx should wait for a ChainLock or confirmations instead.
  - #7857: a `ProUpServTx` spending an output of a pending operator key change, asset lock, asset unlock or MNHF signal is rejected from the mempool until that transaction confirms.
  - #7831: governance object signatures over 96 bytes are rejected, and the governance cache is discarded and re-synced on first start (`doc/release-notes-7831.md`).
  - #7871: address purposes are limited to `send`, `receive` and `refund`. Wallets with other purpose strings load with warnings, and `listlabels` errors on an unknown purpose (`doc/release-notes-27217.md`).
  - #7842: creating an HD wallet with a mnemonic passphrase over 248 bytes fails unless `-allow-deprecated-long-mnemonics` is set, and over 256 bytes always fails (`doc/release-notes-7842.md`).
  - #7792: a node whose evodb is missing a masternode list snapshot now stops at startup and asks for `-reindex`, and `evodb repair` reports it in `repairErrors`.
  - #7867: `protx info <proTxHash> <blockHash>`, `protx listdiff` and `masternode payments <blockHash>` return an error for blocks outside the active chain.
  - #7881: `protx shared_combine` on a `ProUpSharedRegTx` is refused unless its inputs are unlocked coins of a single address of the calling wallet, change returns to that address, and the fee is within `-maxtxfee`.
  - #7836: PSBTs referencing nonexistent previous outputs fail to deserialize (RPC error -22).
  - #7834: negative Electrum-import rescan indices are rejected.
  - #7893: on this branch, mainnet nodes no longer send `GETSPORKS` during mnsync (no effect, mainnet spork values are hardcoded).
