Summary

First piece of a new discover-third-party-services skill: an agent scans a code repository, finds the third-party vendors it depends on, resolves them against the provider catalog and proposes third-party services to track. This PR adds only the detection reference the forthcoming SKILL.md will load on demand.

skills/discover-third-party-services/reference.md holds:

  • the scan sources in priority order (manifests, deploy config, CI, git remotes, env examples) and the directories and files never opened,
  • the three classes (runtime, build-time, skip) that decide what lands in the proposal by default,
  • the secret-handling rules: git remote URLs reduced to the host with user-info stripped, env files read match-only for vendor hostnames and an allowlist of region keys, evidence limited to path:line, package@version and git remote: <host>,
  • the vendor map (signal to catalog search term) with the exact-name acceptance rule and the anchored hostname rule,
  • the region-split providers that have no plain-name catalog row (Datadog, PostHog, Intercom),
  • the unmapped-signal rule, with a cap on catalog calls for names taken from repository text.

Repository content and tool responses are treated as data, never instructions.

Catalog validation

Every search term was run through search-third-party-providers on 2026-11-04 and returned exactly one row whose name equals the term:

Region-split providers, no plain-name row: Datadog (US1 16, US3 2865, US5 5441, EU 2726, AP1 5776, AP2 5777), PostHog (US 3095, EU 7437), Intercom (US 45, EU 3615, AU 3616).

Dropped: Amazon Web Services (catalog name is AWS), MongoDB Atlas (catalog name is MongoDB), Braintree (no provider).

Notes for reviewers

  • Docs only. node scripts/generate-agent-skills-index.mjs --check reports a missing SKILL.md for this directory until the next PR adds it; the index workflow only runs on SKILL.md changes, so this PR does not trigger it.
  • Three local review passes (correctness, maintainability, adversarial) were run before opening; their findings are in the commit history.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for identifying third-party services in a repository, distinguishing runtime services from build-time tools and irrelevant matches.
    • Documented safeguards for handling secrets, matching catalog entries, interpreting regional providers, and confirming actions.
    • Added limits for catalog searches, with a prompt to continue when the limit is reached.

…om a repository

Lists the scan sources by priority, the runtime, build-time and skip
classes, the secret-handling rules for env files and git remotes, and a
vendor map whose every row was resolved against the live provider catalog.
Region-split providers (Datadog, PostHog, Intercom) get their own section
and Braintree was dropped because the catalog has no provider for it.

Walkthrough

This change adds a reference for discovering third-party services in a repository. It defines scan sources and safeguards, candidate classifications, provider catalog matching, region selection, and confirmation rules for mapped and unmapped candidates.

…egister it

The skill scans a repository for the providers it depends on, resolves
them against the provider catalog, proposes a set and tracks it after
confirmation. Four fixtures under examples/ carry the expected proposal,
including one with planted instructions that must change nothing.
Frameworks and libraries are skip, never unmapped search terms; env files
are read with two match-only grep commands; a file-existence signal is
quoted as the path alone; Go modules and pip pins have an evidence form;
only the project root's own git remote counts; the catalog column format
is fixed and the fixtures compare on the provider id.

Review comments at @skills/discover-third-party-services/reference.md:
- Line 16: Update the classification guidance for Dockerfile FROM references and
Compose image registries so they are treated as build-time inputs before runtime
hostname rules are applied. Keep runtime hostnames classified as runtime,
preventing registry hosts such as ECR domains from producing runtime provider
candidates.
- Line 76: Move `cloudbuild.yaml` out of the Google Cloud runtime-provider
signal and into the build-time section; only propose Google Cloud as a runtime
provider when separate runtime evidence supports it. Preserve the other signals
in the existing classification row.
- Line 112: Update the Braintree entry in the reference so it treats “braintree”
as a search term and resolves it against the live catalog; use “not in the
catalog” only if the current exact-name search returns no row.
- Line 15: Update the Package manifests table to define runtime, development,
test, and build dependency scopes for every supported manifest format, including
formats without explicit scope fields. Apply the runtime-by-default
classification only after determining a dependency’s scope, so development,
test, and build dependencies are not proposed as runtime services.
- Line 65: Update the Hostname signals rule to lowercase the parsed host and
remove one trailing root dot before equality and suffix checks. Preserve the
existing domain-boundary matching behavior and the exclusions for deceptive
hostnames.

- Provider-level SDK signals that name no service are called out before narrowing
- Whole-provider choice on a subset-tracked service becomes an update with null components
- Confirmed updates keep running after the create limit stops
- Env-file find commands carry the documented exclusions, and the hostname pipeline
keeps only public suffixes the vendor map uses so non-host values never print
