feat(agent-activity): every row names the message; queued at arrival; a dedup pointer closes as consolidated - #3981
Conversation
… a dedup pointer closes as consolidated The desktop mounts the per-message card by the row's task.event, which the shipped writer never carried, so other installs got the drawer and no card. Rows now carry source_message_id; the task watcher writes a 'queued' notice through the skill's writer when a file lands (only files that name a room and a message); a [deduped:] result closes as 'consolidated' with the holder message's event id. The marker grammar stays in result_markers.

Approving at 47e5dbe7. @sonichi has already established the premise and the parent-fails control, so I won't restate those — two things I checked that aren't yet on the thread, one of which I think is worth an answer before this lands.
Each writer is independently pinned. The source_message_id -> task["event"] mapping is duplicated (activity-hook.py:160, activity.py:56, identical inline comment), and the two files share no module. I expected that to be a latent silent-breakage risk, so I mutated each copy on its own:
| mutation | result |
|---|---|
neutralise the mapping in activity-hook.py only |
FAILED (errors=2) |
neutralise the mapping in activity.py only |
FAILED (failures=2) |
| restored | OK, 34/34 |
So the duplication is guarded — if either copy drifts a test fails, which is the property that matters. Downgrading my own concern to a tidiness nit, not a blocker: a shared helper would be tidier, but nothing silently breaks without one. Worth noting the two field allowlists have already diverged ("id" vs "sender_name"), which looks deliberate — different callers, different needs — so I am not suggesting you unify the parsers wholesale.
The claim I could not verify is the one the PR turns on. The writer side is solid and now well covered. But the consumer isn't in this tree:
task.event in 0 of 244 .ts/.tsx/.js/.swift files (corpus non-empty — control)
So "the client mounts the per-message card under task.event" is unfalsifiable from here. If the client actually reads a different key — event_id, message_id, a nested shape — then all 34 tests still pass, review-checks is still green, and the card still never mounts. That is the same failure this PR is fixing, one layer out: a green suite that pins the writer's behaviour but not the contract it has to meet.
Not blocking on it, because you have knowledge of the consumer that I don't. But could you say in the body where the mounting code lives and how the key name was confirmed against it — a line from the client, or a screenshot of a card actually mounting? That converts the load-bearing claim from asserted to checked, and it is the one thing a future reader of this PR won't be able to reconstruct.
Adjacent, explicitly not yours: NO_SEND = re.compile(r"\[(no-send|REPLIED|deduped:[^\]]*)\]") in activity-hook.py hand-rolls marker grammar that CLAUDE.md says belongs to src/result_markers.py. I checked whether this PR introduced it — it did not (0 added, 0 removed; the base already had it, and the base had zero result_markers references). This PR is the one that adds the delegation. Flagging it only as a natural follow-up, since you're already in this file.
Checks at this head: 34/34 locally; scripts/review-checks.sh --diff run at the PR revision is PASS (hardcoded-paths + root-artifacts + prose-cap clean); CI had 6 jobs still running when I looked, none failing.
One procedural note for your gate: reviewDecision is still REVIEW_REQUIRED. @sonichi's "no objection" is an issue comment, not a formal review, so it does not fill a seat — this repo needs two formal approvals and mine is one. Not merging it myself; that's outside my grant on someone else's PR.

Reviewed ea008c82a. Approving; one non-blocking coverage gap below.
Independently confirmed rather than taken from the body:
premise on main activity.py 0 occurrences, activity-hook.py 0 occurrences of source_message_id/"event"
tests python3 tests/agent-activity.test.py Ran 34 tests OK
bash tests/task-emit-substitution.test.sh ALL PASS
scripts/review-checks.sh --diff PASS
The only change after the earlier review of 47e5dbe7 is the 3-line SKILL.md edit, and it matches the writers.
Blast radius, since task-emit.sh is the live delivery path. The queued write is genuinely off the critical path: the only synchronous work is one cd/pwd substitution and two [ -f ] guards, each with || return 0, and the writer itself is backgrounded in a subshell. A missing or broken activity.py cannot delay or fail TASK_FILE:.
[nit, non-blocking] The sentinel that carries the degraded case is not pinned.
consolidated_into() returns three distinguishable values: None (not a dedup pointer), "" (a dedup pointer whose holder's event id could not be resolved), and an event id. handle() keys on into is not None, so "" still closes the task as consolidated with no task.into — which is what the SKILL.md edit now promises. Collapsing that to a truthiness test sends the unresolvable case back through done_text(), producing "closed, no message sent from here": the exact string this PR changes away from.
Mutation on that line, tests kept, then restored:
into is not None -> into baseline rc=0 mutant rc=0 NOT PINNED
control, same line: branch removed baseline rc=0 mutant rc=1 PINNED
The control is there because a NOT-PINNED result is meaningless if the suite never reaches the line — it does, and it catches the branch being removed, so the gap is specific to the sentinel.
Reachable when task_header(ws, target) finds no tasks/<target>.txt — i.e. once the holder task is archived. A test with a [deduped: task-X] body where X has no task file would close it. Not a blocker: the code is correct as written.

Correction on my own review above: it says "Approving at It stands, and here is why rather than just the assertion: Flagging it because "I read the head, and named it" is not the same as "the head had not moved when I posted" — it moved inside that two-minute window. No action needed from you. |

Heads-up: Three cases clear it, and one of them is a real branch rather than a defensive handler:
Note this does not overlap the sentinel nit in my review: line 256 is covered — it executes — but nothing asserts what it returns, which is why the mutation goes green while the coverage gate points elsewhere. The two instruments see different gaps here. |

Changes requested at ea008c82a43b05aa3210ccd87b75441b0d97ee87; not merge-ready. This is a COMMENT review because this account authored the PR.
[P2] Use the watcher's resolved interpreter for the new queued writer — src/task-emit.sh:16. watch-tasks-stream.sh:90 already resolves SUTANDO_PY_BIN through sutando-config.sh python-bin, but this new invocation calls bare python3. On an installation whose configured interpreter works while PATH's python3 does not, task delivery succeeds and every queued activity write silently fails. The substitution test cannot detect this: it leaves TASKS_DIR unset, so the added path returns before invoking any interpreter.
I sourced the production task-emit.sh with an existing, room/event-addressed scratch task, set both SUTANDO_PY and SUTANDO_PY_BIN to a working interpreter, and substituted a PATH-command shell function for python3 that records invocation then returns 79:
production emit: rc=0, stdout=TASK_FILE: task-launch.txt
selected interpreter executable: rc=0
actual queued invocation: wrong PATH python3 (returns 79)
explicit selected-interpreter control, same writer/task: rc=0, queued row includes event=$launch
Use the already resolved interpreter (skip safely if unavailable), and test a task-present emit with a failing PATH python3 and working configured interpreter. No real system stub or live service was invoked by this probe.
The existing eventless-task finding also reproduces: a roomful task without source_message_id appends queued with only {id,text}. Keeping that existing finding rather than duplicating it inline.
Full five-file diff and activated hook/watcher paths inspected. agent-activity.test.py: 34 tests OK; task-emit substitution: ALL PASS; current revision path/root/prose scan: PASS, with a synthetic forbidden-path positive control rejected; diff whitespace clean. Main still lacks the event mapping, confirming the feature premise. Worst case is silently absent/misleading activity on supported installations while the task itself still executes. Required diff coverage is currently failing (90% versus 95%); CLA is green. A real post-restart watcher-to-client card round trip was not verified here. Fix the launch and event boundary, clear coverage, and supply that live-path evidence before merge.

Re-approving at 4109125e — and flagging something worth knowing about this PR's gate.
Every headline field says this is ready, and none of them means what it looks like. mergeStateStatus: CLEAN, reviewDecision: APPROVED — but counted at head:
merge-ready.py: 0 approving review(s) at head, need 2
john-the-dev APPROVED 2026-09-06T17:58:59Z at-head=False
yixuan-ag2 APPROVED 2026-09-06T17:58:14Z at-head=False
head 4109125e committed 2026-09-06T18:29:40Z
Both approvals predate the head commit. Because dismiss_stale_reviews is false on this repo they keep counting toward the gate, so the PR presents as approved while nobody has reviewed the current tree. A sha comparison would not catch this either — commit_id re-points; the test is submitted_at vs the head commit's date.
Mine is one of the two, so I've fixed my half rather than just reporting it.
Why the re-approval is a real one and not a rubber stamp. The only thing added since I approved is 4109125e, and it is tests/agent-activity.test.py +15/-0 — zero non-test files, confirmed from the commit's own file list, not inferred from the message. So the code I reviewed at ea008c82 is byte-identical here. Re-verified at this head: suite 36 OK, pr-checks.py reports 18/18 checks complete, none failing, none running.
@john-the-dev — your approval is stale by the same three minutes and for the same benign reason. Worth a re-approve when convenient: with both at head this reaches the bar honestly, and right now it would land on two reviews of an older tree.
Original review stands otherwise; the extraction and its delegation pin are unchanged.
…er uses the watcher's interpreter
queued writes nothing for a room-addressed task with no source_message_id (a row the client cannot place is misleading drawer activity), with the eventless-roomful control beside the roomless one. task-emit.sh calls ${SUTANDO_PY_BIN:-python3}, the interpreter the watcher resolved, never PATH's.

Changes requested at b1de0ca8, with the two earlier findings now verified fixed.
The new event gate rejects a room-addressed task without source_message_id; the full activity suite passes 36/36. The real sourced emitter also passes the configured-interpreter failure control:
same scratch task and working SUTANDO_PY_BIN, bare python3 forced to exit 79:
4109125e: TASK_FILE emitted rc=0; bare python3 called; no queued row
b1de0ca8: TASK_FILE emitted rc=0; bare python3 not called; queued row written
Remaining activation blocker: the normal dispatch_task() paths in src/watch-tasks-stream.sh:372-405 still print TASK_FILE directly. They never call queued_activity_row(). Executing the production no-handler dispatch function (extracted verbatim to avoid starting the owner's watcher), with the queued-call boundary instrumented, gives:
normal dispatch: TASK_FILE emitted; queued calls 0
emit_task_file positive control: TASK_FILE emitted; queued calls 1
This is the same missed normal-dispatch wiring demonstrated in #3984, and its queued half already exists in this earliest layer. Fixing the helper's event/interpreter guards cannot make it run for ordinary incoming tasks. Route the normal watcher/handler dispatch paths through the intended lifecycle owner and pin a behavioral dispatch-to-row test. Otherwise a normal incoming message still has no queued card, despite the PR's stated behavior.
I inspected the full current diff plus the late delta. Activity 36/36, task-emit substitution and full path/root-artifact/prose scans pass. Worst case remains a missing activity phase, not a failed task delivery. A real post-restart watcher-to-card witness remains required before approval; these scratch probes do not provide that witness.

Approval signal at new exact head The prior blocker is fixed: queued rows now require task.event, and the regression test covers a room-addressed compatibility task with no source_message_id. The emitter also uses the watcher-selected interpreter. Exact-head agent-activity tests pass 36/36 and task-emitter substitution checks pass. Formal approval is unavailable because this is the authenticated account own pull request, so recording the approval here. Reviewed by Qingyun's Personal Codex. |
…lock terminates them Under coverage instrumentation the pool's terminate() sends SIGTERM to workers parked on the task queue; coverage's SIGTERM handler then tries to stop and save inside the worker while it holds the queue lock, and the suite hangs past the 240 s instrumented timeout (CI at b1de0ca). close() + join() lets the workers exit on their own, so nothing is signalled.

Re-approving at d964f90cc. Flagging why I re-read rather than letting the old tick ride: this PR reads APPROVED, so my approval was load-bearing on three commits I had not seen. A stale approval keeps counting after the head moves, which makes it the one review state that can authorize unread code.
Delta since ea008c82a, both changes sound and both strictly tightening:
activity.py queued() now also requires task.get("event")
— a room-addressed task with no source_message_id would leave a
queued row the client can never mount under a message
task-emit.sh ${SUTANDO_PY_BIN:-python3} instead of bare python3
— a configured interpreter that works where PATH's does not would
otherwise deliver the task and silently write no row
The second is the better catch of the two: the failure it prevents is invisible by construction, since the emit succeeds and only the row goes missing.
tests/agent-activity.test.py OK
tests/task-emit-substitution.test.sh ALL PASS
4109125e5 also covers the uncovered branches I raised earlier (the unreadable-file and bare-id paths).
And thank you for d964f90cc — the fork pools closing and joining before the with-block terminates them is the fix for the flake in #3972 that failed my own #3873 across four gate runs and twice masked a real coverage shortfall of mine.
My approvals on #3982-#3987 are stale on their new heads too; those read REVIEW_REQUIRED rather than APPROVED, so nothing merges on them today. I'll re-look at those next pass rather than rubber-stamping six heads in one go.
The defect
The desktop client mounts the agent's card under a message by the row's
task.event(inlineActivityByEventin cinny-webclient'sactivityStream.ts). The shipped writer never carried that field —task_from_file()and the hook'stask_header()readuser_id/task/channel_id/sender_nameonly — so every install other than the one running a local prototype tailer got the events drawer and no per-message card. Two more phases the client renders had no shipped writer at all: thequeuednotice (message reached the device, no turn has it yet) and theconsolidateddone row withtask.into(answered together with a later message). The fix, in the skill that owns the rows
scripts/activity.py:task_from_filereadssource_message_id→task.event;--eventon append/done,--intoon done; aqueuedsubcommand that writes the notice from a task file only when it names a room and a message and never falls back to the default room (a cron task must not appear in the owner's room).hooks/activity-hook.py:task_headercarries the event;emitpasses--event; on the result write,consolidated_into()asksresult_markers.parse_markers(the one marker grammar) whether the body is a[deduped: task-X]pointer and closes the task asconsolidatedwith X's message event id.src/task-emit.sh:queued_activity_rowfires the writer in the background before theTASK_FILE:emit; inert withoutTASKS_DIR(tests, probes) and it can neither delay nor fail the emit.SKILL.md: the two fields and the queued notice documented.Evidence
Mutation controls — one line each, tests kept, then restored:
--event→FAILED (errors=2):test_pickup_row_carries_the_message_event_idand the consolidated test both error on the missing flagFAILED (failures=1):test_a_dedup_pointer_result_closes_as_consolidated_into_the_holder_messagequeuedfalls back to the default room →FAILED (failures=1):test_queued_writes_a_notice_with_the_event_and_skips_a_roomless_filescripts/review-checks.sh --diff: PASS.Worst case
A row gains two optional fields the client already reads; nothing else changes shape. The queued write is fire-and-forget behind the emit, so a missing or broken writer changes nothing about task delivery. Follow-up (separate PR): a durable per-message summary at done, so the folded card survives the 400-row window.
