Summary

resumed legacy HTTP session
first application request: 404/401/403 -> forget record -> initialize once -> retry once
  later 404: preserve existing behavior
configuration reload removes server
close/drain old pool -> clear persisted record -> best-effort DELETE
shutdown path: keep session persistence for cold restart

Adds reload integration coverage for one upstream DELETE with headers derived from the last live config, and guards asynchronous cleanup against a later reload re-adding the server.

Fixes #1416.

Evidence

  • Before: reload closed a live HTTP transport and then explicitly terminated the same persisted session again.
After: go test ./internal/pool ./internal/daemon ./internal/mcpclient -timeout 90s passes; reload integration asserts exactly one DELETE and the live-config marker.
  • Focused resumed-session and mid-session 404 tests pass in mcpclient.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Blast Radius: medium — legacy HTTP session recovery, persistence, and pool reload cleanup in mcpx.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved recovery for resumed sessions: an initial “not found” or authorization error can trigger a fresh connection, while later “not found” errors are returned without retrying.
    • Improved session cleanup when server configurations change, including removal of persisted records for servers that are no longer configured.
    • Prevented cleanup from an earlier reload from interfering with sessions restored by a later reload.

Walkthrough

The change adds recovery for the first application request on a resumed upstream session. It also coordinates pool retirement and configuration reloads with persisted-session cleanup, including best-effort upstream termination when a removed server’s live configuration is available.

Changes: Resumed session lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session persistence and pool retirement
pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/upstream_sessions.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/pool.go
The session store can return a snapshot of persisted records. Pool saves and removals are synchronized. Pool retirement can mark session persistence as closing and forget stopped instances’ session records.
Resumed-client recovery
pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/client.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/handoff.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/pool.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/reinit_test.go
Pool startup marks restored clients as resumed. On the first application request, the client can recover from a 404, 401, or 403 by reinitializing and retrying. Later 404 responses on that resumed session do not trigger recovery. Tests cover these cases.
Reload cleanup
pkgs/mcpx/internal/daemon/registry.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/daemon/reload.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/upstream_sessions.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/daemon/reload_test.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/daemon/registry_handoff_test.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/upstream_sessions_test.go
Reloads are serialized while removed pools close and drain. Cleanup attempts to terminate stored sessions when their fingerprint and sanitized URL match the live configuration. Records for removed or unconfigured servers are removed, and tests check record removal and upstream DELETE behavior.

Explanation

The changed synchronization, pool retirement, session-store cleanup, client recovery state, and tests directly support issue #1416. The reload mutex prevents asynchronous cleanup from affecting a later reconfiguration. No unrelated feature, shutdown DELETE behavior, TTL change, dashboard change, or general 404 project is shown.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 14.29% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 10 files.

Resolution

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1416 has coding requirements for resumed-session recovery, later-request 404 behavior, removed-server record cleanup, best-effort DELETE with last live configuration, and left-to-expire logging. The client changes gate one recovery attempt to the first request of a resumed session and cover 404, 401, and 403 cases. The reload and pool changes remove records, send one DELETE with re-derived configuration, and log records without a usable live configuration as left to expire. The added tests cover these behaviors. The required full-suite result for cd pkgs/mcpx && go test ./... is not established; only focused test commands are reported.

Resolution

Provide reviewable evidence that cd pkgs/mcpx && go test ./... passes.

Surface failed session-record removals.

SessionFile.Remove drops the in-memory entry and then discards the writeLocked error. If the rewrite fails, the old file still holds the record. A later restart and a re-added server with a matching fingerprint and URL can resume that record. Have Remove return its error, and log a failed removal at the cleanup call sites.

Suggested direction

Change SessionFile.Remove to return the writeLocked error. Then check that error in CleanupRemovedSessionRecords and DiscardUnconfiguredSessionRecords. Log the failure instead of reporting the record as handled. The Take path already accepts this trade-off by design, so keep any retry behavior separate from this change.

Assert the recorded tools/call session IDs in the first-request recovery test.

The fake upstream records every tools/call session ID in callSids. TestResumedLegacySessionFirstRequestRecoversOnce does not assert those recorded calls. It checks only the initialize count and the first initialize's session ID. A second tools/call after recovery would still pass, because the fake upstream accepts it. Assert the recorded tools/call session IDs, as TestLegacySession404Recovery does.

Cover multiple persisted sessions in the removed-server cleanup test.

TestRemovedServerTerminatesAndForgetsPersistedSessions persists one session, under key k. A CleanupRemovedSessionRecords loop that stopped after its first matching record would still pass this test.

The fixture server uses the default global scope, which caps the pool at one process. A second key on that server cannot start a second upstream session, so the test cannot cover two records as written. Set the session scope with a cap of two for this server, then persist a second key:

Move the upstream DELETEs out of the reloadMu section.

The cleanup goroutine calls CleanupRemovedSessionRecords while holding reloadMu. Each matching record can block for up to upstream.sessionDeleteTimeout (5s), and later reloads wait for all of them. Run the DELETEs outside reloadMu, and keep the re-add check race-safe.

Keep records for a live pool that still serves a configured alias.

The discard step keys on registry names, but a shared pool keeps the name of the server that created it. When a is disabled and alias b still uses that pool, a's records are removed while the session is live. Re-enabling a before a cold restart then cannot resume that session.

Update the configured-name set built from r.pools to retain the registry name of
each live shared pool when any configured alias still uses it. Preserve the
existing alias entries and include each pool’s creator name so its records
remain available for resuming the live session.

Assign the first-request recovery to one request.

roundTrip clears resumedFirstRequest after any successful request (client.go:1235-1237), including a request that started after the first one. If the first request then returns a 404, reinitializeLegacy fails its compare-and-swap at client.go:1292 and returns the 404 without recovery. The field comment at client.go:173-175 ties this flag to the first application request. MarkResumedSession in handoff.go:256-262 sets the flag without naming a request.

Record which request holds the one-shot recovery when that request starts. Clear the flag only when the holding request succeeds. A later overlapping request then cannot consume the recovery. The impact is one failed request in this overlap. A retry on the same client can succeed.

Update roundTrip and the resumed-session recovery flow so the first application
request that starts after MarkResumedSession receives ownership of the one-shot
recovery. Clear resumedFirstRequest only when that owning request succeeds;
unrelated overlapping requests must not consume it, so reinitializeLegacy can
still recover the owner’s 404. Preserve the existing one-shot behavior after
recovery.

Keep resumed-first eligibility after non-session failures.

The failure branch in roundTrip clears resumedFirstRequest for any error that is not a session 404 or 401/403. A transient 503 therefore spends the one recovery attempt, and a later upstream 404 is returned without recovery. The field comment says the flag stays set until success or one consumed recovery attempt. Remove the failure-path clear so that only success and the recovery attempt clear it.

In roundTrip, remove the failure-path CompareAndSwap that clears
resumedFirstRequest for non-session errors. Keep the flag set after failures
that do not trigger recovery; only clear it on success or when a recovery
attempt is consumed.
