feat(mcpx): re-initialize on a legacy session 404 and retry once (#1637) - #1642
Phase 1 of #1634, implementing #1637 (queue task 1777).
When a legacy HTTP upstream forgets the session (restarts) mid-life, a session-carrying request now recovers transparently: the dead session is forgotten, the client re-initializes once, and the request is retried exactly once on the new session.
internal/mcpclient/http.go: forgetSession() transport seam — atomically reports and clears the held session id, so the fresh initialize goes out with no session id and no later request echoes the dead one. Stdio transports do not implement the seam; recovery is HTTP-only.
internal/mcpclient/client.go: recovery in roundTrip (narrow trigger: request, legacy era, HTTP 404). Singleflight via reinitMu + a recovery generation: N concurrent 404s from one restart produce exactly one initialize; calls whose generation was already replaced just retry. A 404 with no session held, a modern-era 404, and a second 404 after re-initialize all surface exactly as before. After a successful re-initialize, tools/resources/prompts list-changed invalidations fire (a restarted upstream's catalogue is not the cached one).
Tests (new TestLegacySession404Recovery): recovery at each legacy revision 2025-03-26/2025-06-18/2025-11-25 (exactly one re-initialize, initialize carries no session id, retry carries the new session id, catalogue invalidations fire); 8 concurrent 404s → exactly one initialize; stateless 404 → ordinary error, no initialize; second 404 → error surfaces, no further re-initialize; modern 404 → never retried. Locally: go test ./internal/mcpclient/ passes, -race clean on the recovery tests, go test ./internal/conformance/ passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Legacy Streamable HTTP connections now recover from an expired session by reinitializing and retrying the request once. This helps avoid failures when a server no longer recognizes the client’s session.
Recovery is limited to eligible legacy-session 404 errors; other 404 responses continue to be reported as errors.
Documentation
Updated conformance records to reflect tested session recovery behavior across supported protocol revisions.
The client now reinitializes a legacy HTTP session after an eligible 404 and retries the request once. Tests cover recovery and non-recovery cases. Conformance records mark the requirement as tested across three protocol revisions.
On eligible legacy-session 404 responses, the client clears the session, reinitializes, and retries once. Concurrent requests share recovery. Other 404 cases retain the original error behavior.
Verify recovery and retry behavior pkgs/mcpx/internal/mcpclient/reinit_test.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/pool/upstream_session_test.go
Tests cover recovery across protocol versions, concurrent calls, stateless sessions, repeated 404 responses, and modern transports. The pool test checks that the successor instance serves the last request.
Record conformance coverage pkgs/mcpx/internal/conformance/coverage_transport.go, pkgs/mcpx/internal/conformance/requirements.json, pkgs/mcpx/docs/spec/requirements.md, pkgs/mcpx/docs/spec/conformance-matrix.md, treefmt.toml
Conformance records mark the requirement as tested for three protocol revisions. The matrix counts and generated-input hash change, and the formatter excludes the requirement records.

Legacy session recovery still has concurrency and handshake gaps that can fail requests or leave cached catalogues stale. Resolve these synchronization and session-state issues before merging; retry handling after failed initialization can remain follow-up work.

Gate ordinary requests while re-initialization is in progress
When another call starts while recovery is awaiting the initialize response, forgetSession() has already cleared the session ID, but roundTripOnce() does not wait for reinitMu. That call is therefore sent without a session ID; a session-requiring upstream can return HTTP 400, which sessionGone() does not recover. Singleflighting only callers that already received 404 leaves concurrent users exposed to failures during an otherwise successful recovery. Ordinary requests should wait until the replacement session's handshake completes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Restart the standalone GET listener for the replacement session
If the standalone GET stream disconnects during an upstream restart and its reconnect receives 404, the listener exits in http.go:449–450 while leaving getStream true. Recovery clears only the session ID, so the subsequent finishLegacy() call to listen() immediately returns at the getStream guard instead of opening a stream for the new session. Tool calls can then recover successfully while unsolicited notifications and server requests remain permanently disconnected; tools relying on sampling or elicitation through that stream can time out. Recovery needs to retire the old listener and establish a fresh one for the replacement session.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Synchronize metadata updates during session recovery
Reusing initializeLegacy() on a published client now runs finishLegacy() concurrently with ordinary client operations, but that method writes metaVersion, Era, Negotiated, and Capabilities without synchronization. For example, another CallTool() reads Era through mirrorsHeaders() and metaVersion through call(), while pool capability queries read Capabilities. reinitMu protects only recovery callers, not these readers, so concurrent use during a restart introduces data races even when the negotiated values are unchanged. Publish the recovered metadata through synchronization shared by its readers rather than relying only on the atomic mirror in sessionGone().

Keep the recovery judgment in the client catalogue column
The replacement row puts the successful recovery judgment in the server column and marks the client column n/a. Consequently, the regenerated requirements.json declares this client MUST requirement inapplicable, and the conformance matrix reports n/a for all three legacy revisions rather than the newly registered test coverage. This silently removes the requirement from client conformance accounting instead of retiring its gap as tested. Keep the server judgment n/a, move the implementation judgment to the client column, and regenerate the derived files.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retire or retry the client when recovery initialization fails
If recovery initialization receives a transient 503 or its initiating caller is cancelled before a replacement session ID arrives, the old session ID has already been cleared, but this branch leaves the client alive without recording that initialization is still needed. Later requests are sent sessionless and rejected by a session-requiring upstream; HTTP 400 does not trigger recovery, and even HTTP 404 cannot recover because forgetSession() now returns false. The pool continues reusing this instance because Alive() remains true and its request-error handling does not retire it. Preserve a retryable initialization-needed state or terminate the client so the pool can replace it after this failure.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve HTTP 404 status when decoding JSON-RPC errors
When an upstream returns a session-expiry 404 with a JSON-RPC error body matching the request ID, HTTPTransport.Send() in http.go pushes that body and returns nil, so roundTripOnce() returns a *rpcError rather than an *HTTPStatusError. This predicate therefore skips recovery entirely. This affects the repository's own server: mcpserver/server.go's serveLegacy() returns exactly that response for unknown sessions. Preserve the HTTP status through response decoding so these session-expiry responses also trigger re-initialization; the new tests only exercise empty-body 404s.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reset session-scoped resource subscriptions after recovery
When an expired HTTP session is adopted during handoff, the probe ping now recovers in place, but pool/handoff.go retains the old session's Subscribed entries in in.subscribed. A subsequent Pool.Watch() for one of those URIs returns successfully without sending resources/subscribe, because pool/watch.go's subscribeOn() treats the cached entry as already subscribed. Previously the failed probe discarded the instance, so the next watch acquired a fresh instance and subscribed normally. Catalogue invalidations do not reset this state; recovery needs to clear or replay session-scoped subscriptions so resource updates are not silently lost.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Allow recovery waiters to respect their own cancellation
If two calls receive session 404s and the first starts a slow re-initialization, the second blocks here while the first holds reinitMu across initializeLegacy()'s network operations. Cancelling the second call or reaching its deadline cannot interrupt sync.Mutex.Lock(), so it remains blocked until the unrelated recovery finishes, defeating that caller's request timeout. Unlike the existing cancellation-aware wait in roundTripOnce(), this new wait never checks ctx.Done(). Use a recovery-completion signal that waiters can select alongside their own cancellation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retire old server requests before replacing their session
If the upstream restarts while a sampling or elicitation request is still being answered, recovery leaves its c.asked handler running. handleServerRequest() detaches the handler from origin cancellation and later sends its reply through c.t.Send(), which attaches the replacement session's ID. Server-request IDs can repeat across sessions—the repository's mcpserver.Conn.Request() starts with ID -1 on each new connection—so a late answer to the old question can satisfy a different question in the replacement session. Overwriting the entry in c.asked does not suppress that old reply because the handler only checks its own cancelled flag. Retire outstanding old-session handlers and prevent their replies from crossing the session-generation boundary.

finishLegacy can record the new session's initialize result before its notifications/initialized send fails. This branch then skips generation advancement and catalogue invalidation even though the transport may already hold a usable new session.
Later calls succeed on the replacement session while consumers continue using the previous upstream's cached tools, resources, or prompts.
This can occur when: Recovery initialize returns a new session ID, but the initialized notification gets a transient HTTP failure while later calls on that session are accepted.

Prevent concurrent requests from observing the cleared session.
reinitializeLegacy clears sessionID before initializeLegacy completes. A concurrent CallTool can therefore build its request without Mcp-Session-Id. A session-required legacy server may return HTTP 400. sessionGone only recovers HTTP 404, so that call returns an error instead of waiting for or retrying with the new session.
The recovery synchronization must preserve the required no-session initialize request while preventing ordinary requests from using the cleared-session interval.

Consider failed legacy reinitialization a follow-up recovery limitation.
If initializeLegacy fails before installing a new session, reinitializeLegacy leaves the retained client sessionless. Later calls do not retry initialization and can remain unusable until the instance is replaced.
This limitation is real, but it does not materially worsen the upstream-restart workflow. The merge base already retained a stale session and provided no ordinary-call recovery. Track retry or replacement handling as follow-up work rather than as a new major regression.

Re-initialize when a replacement session returns 404.
A call that starts before another call replaces the legacy session can receive 404 on the replacement. reinitializeLegacy compares only the start generation, so it skips initializeLegacy and retries on the expired session. The client then returns that 404. Compare the session ID the failed request carried with the current session ID instead.

After a 404, recovery re-initializes through setHeadersFor, which still sends the retained negotiated version. The fake upstream ignores that header, so the test passes. Update recovery initialization through setHeadersFor so it omits the retained
negotiated-version header, while preserving normal version headers on other
requests. Make reinitUpstream validate the version header and add a
restart-with-different-version subtest that verifies recovery succeeds without
sending the stale version.

Replay the configured logging level after reinitializing
When a legacy upstream session expires after logging has been enabled, recovery creates a replacement session but never restores its logging level. pool/pool.go sends Hooks.LogLevel only when initially creating the client, and the legacy branch of Client.SetLogLevel() does not retain the setting for replay. Consequently, tool calls recover while their log messages silently stop on servers that require logging to be enabled; the repository's own server behaves this way (mcpserver/conn.go:78–81 and mcpserver/relay.go:56–59). Persist the accepted logging level and reapply it after the replacement handshake.
Expectation: parked — PR feat(mcpx): re-initialize on a legacy session 404 and retry once (#1637) #1642 re-checked fresh: still OPEN, head bcdfcf9, mergeable CONFLICTING / mergeStateStatus DIRTY (conflict only in pkgs/mcpx/docs/spec/conformance-matrix.md per prior verification). Conflict resolution is laptop-worktree work and laptop amd-6 SSH is still unreachable. Resume condition: laptop SSH recovers, then merge origin/main into the branch, resolve that one file, push, CI green, merge.

Phase 1 of #1634, implementing #1637 (queue task 1777).
When a legacy HTTP upstream forgets the session (restarts) mid-life, a session-carrying request now recovers transparently: the dead session is forgotten, the client re-initializes once, and the request is retried exactly once on the new session.
internal/mcpclient/http.go:forgetSession()transport seam — atomically reports and clears the held session id, so the fresh initialize goes out with no session id and no later request echoes the dead one. Stdio transports do not implement the seam; recovery is HTTP-only.internal/mcpclient/client.go: recovery inroundTrip(narrow trigger: request, legacy era, HTTP 404). Singleflight viareinitMu+ a recovery generation: N concurrent 404s from one restart produce exactly one initialize; calls whose generation was already replaced just retry. A 404 with no session held, a modern-era 404, and a second 404 after re-initialize all surface exactly as before. After a successful re-initialize, tools/resources/prompts list-changed invalidations fire (a restarted upstream's catalogue is not the cached one).streamable-http-client-reinit-on-404retired: cover registered, requirements row updated, matrix regenerated.Tests (new
TestLegacySession404Recovery): recovery at each legacy revision 2025-03-26/2025-06-18/2025-11-25 (exactly one re-initialize, initialize carries no session id, retry carries the new session id, catalogue invalidations fire); 8 concurrent 404s → exactly one initialize; stateless 404 → ordinary error, no initialize; second 404 → error surfaces, no further re-initialize; modern 404 → never retried.
