Basic explanation

What this does: A contract can now say "the platform fills in this text field from that one", for example "normalizedLabel is label in lowercase, with o, i and l swapped for 0, 1 and 1". The contract names a system function and the fields it reads. The system functions so far change a string's case (lowercase, uppercase, capitalize, camelCase, snakeCase) or fold it for homographs (homographSafeASCII). An app may leave the field out and the platform writes it in when the document arrives, or the app may send it and the platform checks it. It is the rule DPNS checks today in custom code for usernames, turned into a schema keyword any contract can use.

Value: Any app can build a unique index where Bob, BOB and B0B count as the same name, without platform code written for it. It is also the step before DPNS's own homograph checks can move out of its custom code (a later change). Apps no longer have to compute the value themselves. Function names are namespaced (sys.… for system functions), leaving room for functions contracts may bring later.

Risks: Low for existing contracts: nothing changes unless a contract declares the keyword, and every changed path does nothing before protocol version 14. The new part of the design is that the platform writes a value into a document the client did not send. That had to reach every place that reads a document's data (contest detection, indexes, the stored document, and the proofs), so a missed place would show up as a proof mismatch or a missed collision. The tests cover each of those. An SDK built before this change reports a proof mismatch when an app leaves the field out on a contract that uses the keyword; nothing on chain is affected.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

We are retiring data triggers where protocol version 14 schema keywords can replace them. The DPNS domain create trigger cannot be retired yet: two of its checks, normalizedLabel == convert_to_homograph_safe_chars(label) and the same for normalizedParentDomainName, have no keyword. This adds that keyword. Adopting it in DPNS is left for a later change (plan below).

Design decisions (agreed with Sam):

  • Protocol version 14, editing meta-schema v3 in place. v4.3-dev has no protocol version 15 yet.
  • The keyword is generatedFrom: { "function": <name>, "params": [...] }, a function and its arguments, so it can grow into other functions, and into functions contracts bring later. System functions are named under sys.; SystemFunction is an enum of namespaces, each an enum of its own. sys.stringTransformations (StringTransformation) holds lowercase, uppercase, capitalize, camelCase, snakeCase and homographSafeASCII.
  • The functions use no Unicode tables and change ASCII characters only: str::to_lowercase depends on the Unicode tables of the Rust release a node is built with, which on a general keyword could split consensus. Characters outside ASCII are kept. Which characters are allowed is each param's pattern's job, never the function's.
  • The generated property needs no pattern of its own: every value it can hold is generated from params that passed their own patterns. It keeps maxLength when indexed (at most 63), as every indexed string does.
  • The client may leave the property out and the platform generates it on arrival; a value the client sends is checked.
  • The check runs in DataContract::validate_document_properties, where maxBytes and propertyConstraints run, so a client's document.validate sees it too.
  • Params are dotted property paths of the same document for now; literals, system values, nested calls and reads from other documents can be added later without changing what parses today. Neither the property nor a param may be transient.

What was done?

The keyword (meta-schema v3, packages/rs-dpp/schema/meta_schemas/document/v3/document-meta.json): generatedFrom: { "function": "sys.stringTransformations.homographSafeASCII", "params": ["<dotted path>"] } on a string property. A dependent schema restricts it to strings; typed-array items refuse it.

Before and after:

A contract declaring:

"label":           { "type": "string", "pattern": "^[a-zA-Z0-9-]{3,63}$", "maxLength": 63, "position": 0 },
"normalizedLabel": { "type": "string", "maxLength": 63, "position": 1,
                     "generatedFrom": { "function": "sys.stringTransformations.homographSafeASCII", "params": ["label"] } }
Document sent Before (protocol version 13, or no keyword) After (protocol version 14)
contract registration with the keyword refused by meta-schema v2 (JsonSchemaError, 10101) accepted
{ "label": "Bob" } (normalizedLabel required) refused: normalizedLabel is required accepted, stored as { "label": "Bob", "normalizedLabel": "b0b" }
{ "label": "Bob", "normalizedLabel": "b0b" } accepted accepted
{ "label": "Bob", "normalizedLabel": "bob" } accepted (only a data trigger could refuse it) refused, DocumentPropertyNotGeneratedError (10424)
{ "label": "B0B" } after Bob exists, unique index on normalizedLabel n/a refused, DuplicateUniqueIndexError (both generate b0b)
{ "normalizedParent": "dash" } without parent accepted refused, 10424

Parse (rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/):

  • property/generated_from/: GeneratedFrom { function, params } and GenerationParam::Property(path). system_function/ holds SystemFunction, an enum of namespaces (SystemFunction::StringTransformation(StringTransformation)), with one submodule per sys. namespace. system_function/string_transformations.rs holds StringTransformation and its six functions, each of one string: lowercase, uppercase, capitalize, camelCase, snakeCase (the last two split words at ASCII non-alphanumerics and before an ASCII capital that starts a word, as in helloWorld and XMLHttp) and homographSafeASCII. On any ASCII string homographSafeASCII gives exactly what convert_to_homograph_safe_chars gives.
  • DocumentProperty::generated_from (appended field, skipped when None).
  • class_methods/try_from_schema/mod.rs: apply_generated_from (slot apply_generated_from, None before 14) reads the declaration on every parse and checks the function is a built-in and params holds as many params as it takes. validate_generated_from_declarations (parser generation 3) checks that every param is another string property, is not generated itself, and is neither transient nor inside a transient object (the same goes for the declaring property). It also checks that every param sits inside every object that holds the declaring property, so there is always an object to write into.

Generation on arrival (DocumentTypeBasicMethods::fill_generated_properties, slot fill_generated_properties): when a document leaves a declared property out and supplies every param, the value is generated and written in. It is called:

  • first thing in the drive action transformers of document create, replace and index-only delete, before contest resolution, the schema check, index uniqueness and storage read the data. The replace and index-only delete transformers take platform_version for this;
  • in Document::try_from_create_transition / try_from_replace_transition (dpp), and in index_only_transition_entry_path_query, the one builder the prover and the verifier share for index-only entries, so prove_state_transition and verify_state_transition_was_executed_with_proof work from the document the platform stored.
  • The generation and the check visit only the declaring properties, cached with their declarations on DocumentTypeV2 (DocumentTypeV2Getters::generated_from_fields, next to distinct_from_fields).

Check (DocumentTypeBasicMethods::validate_generated_from_properties, slot validate_generated_from): DataContract::validate_document_properties v0 runs it after the JSON schema and maxBytes. A declared property must equal what its function generates from its params and be absent when a param is. A document that repeats a key in an object on the way to the property or to a param is refused too: the JSON schema validation and the stored document keep the last of repeated keys, while the path reads that generate the value find the first, so a repeated key could otherwise store a name beside a generated value made from a different one. Otherwise the new basic error DocumentPropertyNotGeneratedError (10424; BasicError discriminant 200), naming the property, the function and its params, is returned.

Registration: meta-schema v3 refuses generatedFrom beside $ref, since the parser replaces a $ref'd property with its definition and would drop the declaration.

Update compatibility:

  • generatedFrom is registered in rs-json-schema-compatibility-validator/src/rules/rule_set.rs as fixed: adding, removing or changing it is refused (IncompatibleDocumentTypeSchemaError, 10246).
  • validate_update v1 refuses a property the update adds with generatedFrom when all its params already existed (DocumentTypeUpdateError, 40212). Documents stored before the update were never generated, so they would hold the params without the value. A property with a new param is fine: old documents lack that param, so the value is rightly absent.

Clients (DocumentTypeBasicMethods::regenerate_generated_properties, same slot): the client-side twin sets every declared property to what its params generate, replacing a value the document holds and removing it when a param is absent. The create, replace and index-only delete from_document builders call it, so a transition an SDK builds carries the value, a document fetched, edited and sent back carries the value of its new params rather than the stale one the platform would refuse, and its contest (DPNS-style contested index over the generated property) is detected before the fund is stated. Sdk::contest_fund_to_join and the property-constraint pre-checks (JS checkDocumentPropertyConstraints, FFI dash_sdk_data_contract_check_property_constraints) judge the document the same way. Random documents draw the params of every generated property they drew, optional ones included, then generate the value, so fixtures pass the schema and the check.

Bindings and docs:

  • the error is mapped in wasm-dpp, and wasm-dpp2 gets DocumentGeneratedFromErrorCode and ConsensusError.documentGeneratedFromErrorCode;
  • v14 changelog item 53;
  • a book chapter contract-keywords/generated-from.md, a deep dive in data-model/documents.md, the keyword overview rows and the error-code row.

Numbering: #5041 (refersTo commit-and-reveal, open) also claims BasicError discriminant 200 and code 10423. This PR takes 10424 so no public code moves whichever merges first; the discriminant gets renumbered by whichever PR rebases second. Changelog item 52 went to #5101 when it merged, so this PR's item is 53.

In-place changes to shipped generations

Each edit below is unreachable before protocol version 14. There the meta-schemas (v0 to v2) refuse generatedFrom, the parser ignores it (apply_generated_from is None, so no property carries a declaration), and both method slots are None. fill_generated_properties then leaves data untouched and validate_generated_from_properties returns an empty result without reading anything.

Generation Selected by Why consensus cannot change there
DataContract::validate_document_properties v0 protocol versions 1 to 14 the added call returns an empty result when validate_generated_from is None
create action transformer (DocumentCreateTransitionActionV0::try_from_borrowed_document_create_transition_with_contract_lookup) all protocol versions the generation is a no-op when fill_generated_properties is None; the data clone moved earlier, a pure refactor
replace action transformer (DocumentReplaceTransitionActionV0::try_from_borrowed_document_replace_transition) all protocol versions same no-op. It also gains a platform_version parameter and a base.document_type()? call ahead of the existing logic; that call cannot fail, because building the base action above it already resolved the document type (its token cost is read from it), and the document_type_field_is_required calls right after resolve it the same way
index-only delete action transformer v0 protocol version 14 (index-only types are new at 14) same no-op; its new base.document_type()? call cannot fail for the same reason (the base action read the deletion token cost from the type)
document type parse core (insert_values, insert_values_nested) all parser generations apply_generated_from returns None without reading the schema when its slot is None
Document::try_from_create_transition_v0 / try_from_replace_transition_v0, the create / replace / index-only delete from_document builders, random documents, the JS and FFI property-constraint pre-checks client side, all protocol versions not consensus; same no-op before 14
index_only_transition_entry_path_query (shared by proof generation and verification) protocol version 14 (index-only types are new at 14) proofs are not consensus; the generation is a no-op before 14, and from 14 it rebuilds the same entry the node stored, on both sides
DocumentType::validate_update v1 protocol version 14 only not shipped; gains the update check above
names_an_object (shared by the distinctFrom and generatedFrom declaration checks) protocol version 14 only extracted from the distinctFrom check with identical output

Meta-schema v3 is edited in place under its own rule: it stays editable until 4.2 is live on mainnet.

Adopting it in DPNS (follow-up, not in this PR)

DPNS v2 shipped at protocol version 13, so adoption needs:

  1. A DPNS v3 schema that adds generatedFrom to normalizedLabel (param label) and to normalizedParentDomainName (param parentDomainName). The two generated properties drop their pattern (implied by the params' patterns), and normalizedParentDomainName drops its "minLength": 0 (a string may already be empty, and the parser reads an absent minimum as 0). maxLength stays on both for the index:

    "normalizedLabel": {
      "type": "string", "maxLength": 63, "position": 1,
      "generatedFrom": { "function": "sys.stringTransformations.homographSafeASCII", "params": ["label"] }
    },
    "normalizedParentDomainName": {
      "type": "string", "maxLength": 63, "position": 3,
      "generatedFrom": { "function": "sys.stringTransformations.homographSafeASCII", "params": ["parentDomainName"] }
    }

    Neither removal changes a stored encoding (pattern and minLength only affect validation), and neither admits a document the keyword would not refuse. The same version should set canBeDeleted: false on domain, so both changes ship in one schema version. It is applied with apply_contract at the upgrade, which skips validate_update, so every stored property encoding must stay identical. In particular parentDomainName stays optional, since required changes the stored encoding.

  2. A DPNS create trigger version without the two homograph checks, bound from that protocol version.

A user update could not add the keyword to existing properties (the differ freezes it, and validate_update refuses a new generated property over existing params). The system contract upgrade skips both checks. That is safe for DPNS, because every stored domain already holds the right values, which the trigger enforced.

What adoption changes for DPNS:

  • A wrong normalized value is refused at mempool admission with 10424 (a basic error naming the first failing property), instead of in the block with DataTriggerConditionError (40500), which listed every failed check.
  • A domain create without parentDomainName is refused with 10424, because the normalized parent is required and its param is absent. Today it fails inside the trigger.
  • Clients may leave both normalized fields out.
  • On ASCII, which DPNS's patterns enforce, the function computes exactly what the trigger computes, so no accepted name changes.

Follow-ups

  • Document subscription filters (drive::query::filter) match clauses against a transition's raw data, so a subscription on a generated property misses creates and replaces that left it out (after this merges). The same PR can give the create, replace and index-only delete transitions one method that returns their data as the node reads it, and use it in the transformers, the dpp try_from_* functions, the proof builder and the filter.
  • Every other keyword that acts through the parsed property (refersTo, maxBytes, distinctFrom, encryptedFor, requiredSince) is still dropped silently when written beside $ref, and still reads nested values through the first of repeated keys; this PR closes both only for generatedFrom.
  • wasm-dpp2 / JS SDK accessors to discover the declarations, like documentTypeDistinctFrom, and a JS helper to generate the values before local validation.
  • Swift and Kotlin schema parsers.
  • When functions from contracts arrive: a client cannot rerun such a function to rebuild a document, so proof verification would compare against the stored value for those, while sys. built-ins stay recomputed.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • rs-dpp/.../property/generated_from/system_function/string_transformations.rs: homographSafeASCII equals convert_to_homograph_safe_chars on all 128 ASCII characters and on every string of up to three characters over the DPNS alphabets; the case changes, the word splitting and camelCase and snakeCase on examples (XMLHttpRequest, version2Beta, separators, non-ASCII); every transformation keeps non-ASCII characters, is idempotent, and keeps the length (camelCase never lengthens, snakeCase at most doubles). system_function/mod.rs: SystemFunction generates nothing for another number of params, reads and writes its wire names, and lists exactly the functions meta-schema v3 lists; generated_from/mod.rs: the declaration's wire form. generated_from_tests.rs: every string transformation registers and generates.
  • rs-dpp/.../try_from_schema/v3/generated_from_tests.rs:
    • parse, at any depth;
    • every registration refusal (unknown or unprefixed function, wrong number of params, bad params, bad param targets), both with and without meta-schema validation;
    • protocol version 13 refuses the keyword under validation and ignores it without;
    • generation and check behaviour, with no-ops at protocol version 13;
    • validate_document_properties ordering after the JSON schema;
    • the create, replace and index-only delete builders carry the generated value (and the create its contest), and the replace builder replaces a stale one;
    • the client-side regeneration replaces stale values and removes those whose param is absent;
    • a repeated key on the way to a param or to the property is refused;
    • generatedFrom beside $ref is refused by the meta-schema;
    • random documents satisfy the rule, and draw the optional params of a required generated property, at the top level and inside an object.
  • rs-dpp/.../validate_update/common/mod.rs: adding, changing or removing the declaration is incompatible; an unchanged one is not. validate_update/v1: a new generated property over an existing param is refused, one over a new param is not.
  • rs-drive-abci/.../batch/tests/document/generated_from.rs:
    • a left-out property is generated on create and on replace;
    • a correct supplied value is accepted;
    • a wrong one, and one without its param, are refused (paid, nothing stored);
    • a unique-index collision is found through the generated value;
    • the proofs of a create and of a replace that left the property out verify;
    • an index-only entry created and deleted without the generated value is found, and both proofs verify;
    • a contested index over the generated property: an SDK-built create carries its contest, and a create sent without the value is resolved by the node;
    • the create and replace transformers do not generate it at protocol version 13;
    • replace structure validation accepts a wrong value at protocol version 13 and refuses it at 14.
  • rs-sdk-ffi/.../property_constraints.rs: the pre-check judges a left-out or stale generated property as the builders send it.
  • rs-json-schema-compatibility-validator rule examples, the frozen BasicError discriminant test, and the wasm-dpp2 error-code mirror test.

Breaking Changes

Consensus change at protocol version 14 (new schema keyword, new basic error 10424, new version slots). Rust API:

  • DocumentProperty gains a public generated_from field, so struct literals need generated_from: None;
  • DocumentTypeBasicMethods gains a required generated_from_fields;
  • the drive replace and index-only delete action transformers take a trailing platform_version.

Nothing changes for existing contracts or documents.

…ed form of another (PV14)

A string property may declare normalizedFrom: { property, transform } to
hold a normalized form of another string property of the same document.
The one transform, homographSafeASCII, lowercases A to Z and maps o to 0
and i and l to 1, keeping every other character; on ASCII it equals the
DPNS trigger's convert_to_homograph_safe_chars, without Unicode tables.

A document that leaves the property out while supplying the source gets it
computed on arrival (create, replace and index-only delete transformers,
and the document rebuilt for proof verification); a supplied value is
checked in DataContract::validate_document_properties after the schema and
refused with DocumentPropertyNotNormalizedError (10424). Registration
checks the source (another string property, not normalized itself, not
transient, inside every object that holds the property); changing the
declaration on update is incompatible. Every call site is inert before
protocol version 14.

The generatedFrom feature is gated to protocol version 14. The remaining items are documentation corrections about path-length units, the client regeneration method, and case-folding scope. None affects runtime behavior, so the change is mergeable with a minor follow-up.

Generated fields affect how documents are accepted, indexed, stored, and proven. The inspected paths use a shared, version-gated rule and did not reveal a security failure, but a mismatch in this design could affect document integrity or availability.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently supplied inputs are a contract declaration and document values. For contracts adopting the keyword, the derived value can affect document acceptance, contested-index selection, stored properties, and proof expectations; the inspected generation method itself has no identity or credential input.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — On the inspected create path, base-action validation and contract lookup precede filling. The fill preserves supplied fields for generated-value validation, while version dispatch leaves earlier-protocol data unchanged.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected index-only proof producer and verifier derive their entry query through the same helper; it fills generated values before computing the path and member key. This is counterevidence to a proof-path mismatch for that transition kind.

…update rule, random documents

- The create, replace and index-only delete from_document builders compute
  a left-out normalized property, so an SDK-built transition carries it and
  its contest is detected; Sdk::contest_fund_to_join resolves the contest on
  a filled copy.
- The prover's index-only branch fills the values, as the verifier does.
- validate_update v1 refuses a new property normalized from a source that
  already existed (DocumentTypeUpdateError): stored documents were never
  filled.
- Random documents compute each normalized property from its source.
- The declaring paths are cached on DocumentTypeV2 (normalized_from_fields)
  and the check compares without building the normalized string.
- names_an_object is shared with distinctFrom, and the typed-array items
  lookup reuses typed_array_items_keyword.
- Tests: replace proof, index-only create/delete with proofs, contested
  index over the normalized property, builders, random documents, update.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every value a normalizedFrom property can hold is the normalized form of a
source that passed the source's pattern, so the book examples and the
drive-abci test contract drop the normalized properties' patterns and keep
maxLength for their indexes. The wrong-value test now sends "bob", which
the keyword itself refuses. Descriptions that said "the properties'
pattern" now name the source's pattern.

…ction and params

The keyword becomes generatedFrom: { "function": <name>, "params": [...] },
so it can take more built-ins later, and functions a contract brings once
those exist. Built-ins are named under sys.; the first is
sys.stringTransformations.homographSafeASCII, taking one string param.

- GeneratedFrom { function: GenerationFunction, params: Vec<GenerationParam> };
  each function declares how many params it takes, checked at registration.
- Params are property paths for now (GenerationParam::Property); literals,
  system values and nested calls can be added without changing what parses.
- Registration, generation and the check run per param; the update rule
  refuses a new generated property only when all its params already existed.
- DocumentPropertyNotGeneratedError (10424) names the function and params;
  wasm-dpp2 DocumentGeneratedFromErrorCode.
- Version slots, meta-schema, compatibility rule, book chapter
  (contract-keywords/generated-from.md), deep dive and v14 item 52 renamed.

…ted keys, $ref, random documents

- The client builders (create, replace and index-only delete from_document),
  the SDK contest fund lookup and the JS and FFI property-constraint
  pre-checks call the new regenerate_generated_properties: it replaces a
  value the document holds with the one its params generate, and removes it
  when a param is absent. A fetched, edited and replaced document no longer
  sends the stale value the platform refuses (a paid 10424).
- The check refuses a document that repeats a key on the way to a param or
  to the generated property: the schema validation and storage keep the last
  of repeated keys, where the platform generated from the first.
- Meta-schema v3 refuses generatedFrom beside $ref, which the parser would
  drop, and its update-rule wording now matches the code (one new param).
- Random documents draw the params of a drawn generated property, so a
  required generated property with an optional param is never left out.
- The prover and verifier fill moves into index_only_transition_entry_path_query,
  the builder both share.
- generated_from_fields moves to DocumentTypeV2Getters beside
  distinct_from_fields and caches (path, declaration) pairs; the check
  compares against GenerationFunction::apply, dropping is_applied.
- GenerationFunction gets its own module, with a string_transformations
  submodule per sys. namespace holding homograph_safe_ascii.
- A PV13 test for the in-place replace transformer, the reason in every
  in-place comment, imports instead of inline paths, and the book's error
  codes per rule.

…ive more string transformations

GenerationFunction becomes SystemFunction, an enum of namespaces, each an
enum of its own in a module of its own. SystemFunction::StringTransformation
holds sys.stringTransformations, which gains lowercase, uppercase,
capitalize, camelCase and snakeCase beside homographSafeASCII. Every string
transformation changes ASCII characters only (no Unicode tables, so nodes
built with different Rust releases agree) and gives back its own output
unchanged. camelCase and snakeCase split words at ASCII non-alphanumerics and
before an ASCII capital that starts a word (helloWorld, XMLHttp).

Meta-schema v3 lists all six, and a test pins that list to SystemFunction::ALL.
The book lists each function with an example and warns that snakeCase can
lengthen a value past the property's maxLength.

… test builds the replace action with its new field

- v14 item 53 names regenerate_generated_properties for the client
  builders, the shared index-only proof builder, the $ref refusal and the
  repeated-key refusal.
- The book states the param path limit holds ASCII, so characters and
  bytes agree.
- The hand-built replace action in the generatedFrom structure test sets
  property_constraint_aggregates, added by #5109.

This pull request now only makes propertyAgreement pairs compare values
instead of index keys. The registration rule that a preallocated
index's agreement source fits a tree key, and the Drive preallocation
changes that go with it, move unchanged to #5123 with their tests and
fixtures.

The PV14 note is renumbered from 53, which #5099 took on v4.2-dev, to
56 (54 is claimed by an open pull request, 55 by #5123), and now covers
only the comparison.
