Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Commit-and-reveal lookups look functionally sound. A narrow compatibility case can still let a consuming lookup target a history-keeping document type, which then fails at deletion time instead of being rejected up front. The documentation also needs small wording fixes, including the separator rule and the DPNS example. The change is mergeable with these follow-ups. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Commit-and-reveal now depends on several components agreeing about which commitment was validated and deleted. The reviewed path has ownership, lookup, and batch-conflict controls, but one contract-scoping question remains unresolved. Retained concerns

Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
Verified the supplied findings against exact head 185c39c. The four overlapping Codex findings identify one confirmed blocking defect: failed reference-expression branches retain pending consumptions, allowing an accepted create to delete a commitment from a branch that failed. Verification used source tracing; no tests were run.
Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

Batch state validation passes the retained commitment to set_consumed_documents, and the create converter emits a DeleteDocument, deleting and refunding a commitment whose consuming branch failed. This shape is accepted: parse_reference_expression permits alternating nested combinators, and parse_reference_expression_leaf admits deletable-document lookups. The existing renewal test covers a wholly rejected create, not a failed nested branch followed by outer success. Make consumption accumulation transactional at expression boundaries: preserve earlier successful contributions, discard additions from failed operands, and discard all additions made by an expression when that expression fails. Keep read costs charged. Add a regression test in which this nested expression accepts the create through its identity fallback and assert that the commitment remains.

Re-review — Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
Verified the supplied findings against head b750936 and consolidated them into one blocking issue. Consumption records from a failed nested expression survive when another branch accepts the create, causing the commitment to be deleted. The prior finding remains valid; verification was by source inspection, without running tests.
Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

…eals (PV14)
A refersTo lookup key may be computed, { "sha256d": [part, ...] }: the
SHA-256 of the SHA-256 of a preimage the document being created reveals,
concatenated from property parts (string UTF-8, byte array bytes,
identifier bytes), text parts and at most one ifEmpty part. The
document such a key finds is a commitment, so the lookup is judged on a
create only. Beside the key a lookup may declare minimumAgeSeconds
(judged against the found document's $createdAt, 40142) and consume
(the create deletes the found document), and a propertyAgreement
{"$ownerId": "$ownerId"} makes the commitment the writer's own.
creatorRefersTo takes a deletableDocument target through a computed key.
A create that cannot assemble the preimage is refused before any read
(10423).
The keyword reproduces the DPNS preorder hash byte for byte, so the
preorder check can later move out of the DPNS create trigger. DPNS and
its trigger are unchanged here.

Re-review — Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
The PV14 commit-reveal implementation remains vulnerable to leaking document consumptions from failed reference-expression branches. A consuming leaf appends to the shared accumulator before its enclosing combinator result is known, and the combinator never rolls back that append; a later successful sibling can therefore cause an unintended commitment deletion.
Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_reference_validation/v0/mod.rs:780-811
validate_reference_target_v0 appends a consuming lookup to consumed_documents as soon as the leaf holds, but validate_reference_v0 passes the same accumulator through each anyOf/allOf operand without checkpointing it. Consequently, an expression such as anyOf(allOf(consuming_reveal, failing_leaf), identity) can append the commitment during the first operand, fail that allOf, and then succeed through the identity operand while retaining the stale consumption. The accepted create then propagates it through set_consumed_documents, and the high-level converter deletes a commitment even though the consuming branch did not hold. Checkpoint before each operand and at expression entry, truncating failed operand effects and all effects when the overall expression fails.

`validate_reference_target_v0` appends a consuming lookup to `consumed_documents` as soon as the leaf holds, but `validate_reference_v0` passes the same accumulator through each `anyOf`/`allOf` operand without checkpointing it. Consequently, an expression such as `anyOf(allOf(consuming_reveal, failing_leaf), identity)` can append the commitment during the first operand, fail that `allOf`, and then succeed through the `identity` operand while retaining the stale consumption. The accepted create then propagates it through `set_consumed_documents`, and the high-level converter deletes a commitment even though the consuming branch did not hold. Checkpoint before each operand and at expression entry, truncating failed operand effects and all effects when the overall expression fails.

The reference expression evaluator shared the list of commitments to consume across operands, so a consuming reveal inside an allOf that then failed kept its record when another anyOf operand accepted the create, and the create deleted the commitment. Each operand's records are now dropped when it fails, and an allOf that fails drops all of its own. Also names a lookup's unknown key with the neutral "refersTo lookup" prefix, since deletableDocument lookups parse through the same code. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review — Preliminary review — Phase 1 blocker gate
Verified the supplied findings against b293150. Three issues remain: an existing immutable-reference check rejects valid create-only computed lookups, computed hashes are unbilled, and nested revealed carriers bypass duplicate-key protection. Expression consumption rollback is fixed, and consumed-document authorization is already enforced before conversion; verification was by source inspection, without executing tests.
Validated blockers were found by the Phase-1 review and confirmed by a fresh verifier. Phase 2 is deferred until a fresh same-head revalidation clears the blocker gate.

This check classifies every DeletableDocumentLookup as requiring revalidation on replacement, including computed lookups. For an identifier property carrying a computed lookup on a mutable document type, referring_side_error requires the stored carrier to be immutable, but this function then rejects that same immutable property. Consequently, the supported combination of an immutable identifier carrier and a create-only deletable commitment lookup cannot be registered. The fixed-carrier requirement itself is correct; the conflicting check here is not. Exclude create-only computed lookup leaves from deletable_lookup, while retaining the restriction for ordinary lookup leaves, including those inside mixed expressions. Both binds_a_changed_property and validate_reference_target_v0 already skip computed lookups on replacement.

lookup.key_values invokes LookupHashKey::key_value, which assembles the preimage and computes SHA-256d, but this helper records only documents_outcome.cost() from the GroveDB query. The revealed-property path also computes key.key_value before reaching this helper, without recording a hash operation. Billing the query therefore does not bill the new hashing work. This violates the explicit-cost requirement even though validators agree on the undercharged fee; it is not a prepare/process divergence. Record deterministic processing costs for the actual digest work, including its input length and any repeated computation, or reuse the computed result and charge it once. The existing PV14 document-ID validation demonstrates length-based ValidationOperation::DoubleSha256 accounting; a flat DoubleSha256(1) is not an adequate replacement.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5041#discussion_r4124545156)
For a nested revealed carrier such as meta.name, get_optional_at_path traverses Value::Map using get_optional_key, which selects the first matching key. Object storage encoding instead converts the map to a BTreeMap and retains the last matching key. A create containing two nested name entries can therefore validate and consume a commitment for the first value while storing the second. Calling key.key_value afterward does not close this gap: the '.' parameter uses the already-selected reference_value directly, whereas only named property parameters pass through the duplicate-rejecting read_param helper. first_unrevealable_lookup_key uses the same unguarded carrier read, so structure validation does not reject it either. Use a shared duplicate-aware carrier reader in both paths, preserving the absent-property behavior but returning DocumentReferencePreimageInvalidError for repeated keys.
…function
The function that computes a commit-and-reveal lookup key moves out of
lookup.keys into the reference's propertyAgreement, keyed by the
referenced property it pins:
"propertyAgreement": {
"$ownerId": "$ownerId",
"saltedDomainHash": {
"function": "sys.hash.sha256d",
"params": ["preorderSalt", "normalizedLabel", { "const": "." }, "parentDomainName"]
}
}
The property must be in the lookup's index; the parser holds the pair as
that index property's computed key, so validation is unchanged. lookup
names the index, maps the other index properties in keys, and leaves keys
out when the function fills the whole index. At most one function pair,
never beside a key for the same property, and only with a lookup.
Params name a single property carrying the reference by its path; "."
stays only for a value without one (each element of a typed array, the
writer, the creator), so a literal "." const no longer sits next to a "."
meaning the salt.

…ly lookup on an immutable carrier The sha256d of a propertyAgreement function was computed without a processing fee, and twice for a revealed string or byte array: once for the referenced id, once for the lookup's key. It is now computed once (the revealed path hands its digest to the lookup) and billed as ValidationOperation::DoubleSha256 by the blocks it hashes, the padded preimage and the second pass (HashFunction::block_count). The older rule refusing a deletableDocument lookup on an immutable property also refused a create-only lookup, whose carrier the new rule requires to be fixed once written, so an identifier carrier on a mutable type could satisfy neither. A lookup whose key a function computes is never re-validated on a replace and is now exempt. Adds a regression for a salt nested in an object and repeated there: the create is refused before any read (10423) and consumes nothing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…lookup key `moderatorAbilities.changeFields` refuses a field a reference reads, but its walker took a lookup's key parts from `referring_properties`, which leaves out the params of a key a propertyAgreement function computes. On a type with `documentsMutable: false` such a param passed the lookup's own fixed-once-written check (it runs before the moderators' fields are set), so a moderator could change a value the create's commitment hashed. The walker now reads the computed key's params too. Changelog note 59 (was 57 before the merge) also lists the consume and create-only rules added in the previous commit. The lookup now says only how the referenced document is found (`index`,
`keys`); what a reference asks of the document found, and what the create
does to it, sit on the `refersTo` beside the function pair they depend on.
Before:
"lookup": { "index": "saltedHash", "minimumAgeBlocks": 1, "consume": true },
"propertyAgreement": { "$ownerId": "$ownerId", "saltedDomainHash": { ... } }
After:
"lookup": { "index": "saltedHash" },
"propertyAgreement": { "$ownerId": "$ownerId", "saltedDomainHash": { ... } },
"minimumAgeBlocks": 1,
"consume": true
Meta-schema v3 (protocol version 14, unreleased, edited in place) moves
both keywords to the refersTo and requires a lookup and a function pair
beside them, and `deletableDocument` for `consume`. The parser reads them
from the refersTo, refuses them inside a lookup (naming where they go) and
on a reference without a lookup, and keeps holding them on the parsed
`DocumentReferenceLookup`, so validation and execution are unchanged.
wasm-dpp2's reference listing reports them beside the lookup too.

- `consume` is refused into a document type that keeps history: the storage layer refuses to delete such a document. A full parse already refuses a deletable type that keeps history, and the check runs under full validation only, so this changes no outcome; the rule is stated here as `ttl` and moderator deletion state theirs. - The book no longer says DPNS registers names through a declaration: its domain create trigger does the commit and reveal today. - The separator rule names its trigger: a variable-length param needs one when another variable-length param comes anywhere after it. Basic explanation
What this does: A data contract can now say "a document of this type may only be created if a matching commitment document already exists". The document being created carries some values (for example a random salt and a name). The platform hashes them and looks the hash up in another document type through a unique index. This is the "commit, then reveal" pattern DPNS uses for name preorders, written as a schema rule instead of hand-written node code.
It extends the 4.2
refersTowith a function inside itspropertyAgreement. The DPNS salt can say: "preorderSaltrefers to apreorderwhosesaltedDomainHashissys.hash.sha256dof the salt and the name". The platform computes that hash, finds the preorder through its unique index, and checks it. The function uses the same{ "function", "params" }shape asgeneratedFrom(#5099). Optionally the contract can also demand that:Value: Contract authors get commit and reveal without a data trigger. For a name under a parent, the rule reproduces the DPNS preorder hash byte for byte, so a later DPNS contract version can drop the preorder query from its create trigger. No behaviour of any existing contract changes.
Risks: Low. Everything is new PV14 grammar that no stored contract can hold: meta-schema v3 refused these shapes until now, and the parser before PV14 ignores
refersToentirely. The few shipped generations touched in place are unreachable before PV14 (see below). One new basic error (10423, BasicError discriminant 201) and one new state error (40142) are appended. No slow tests are added.Issue being fixed or feature implemented
We are retiring data triggers where a 4.2 (protocol version 14) schema keyword can say the same thing. The DPNS
domaincreate trigger (create_domain_data_trigger_v1) checks the preorder: it computessha256d(preorderSalt ++ fullDomainName)and queriespreorderthrough its uniquesaltedHashindex. Until now nothing in the schema language could express a hash of revealed values.What was done?
The keyword (dpp, meta-schema v3, PV14 in place)
A function pair in
propertyAgreement."<referenced property>": { "function": "sys.hash.sha256d", "params": [...] }demands that the referenced property hold that hash of the referring document's values. It is keyed by the referenced property, since a function cannot be a JSON key (the reverse of a plain{ "<here>": "<there>" }pair). At most one per declaration.It computes a lookup key. The property it names must be in the reference's
lookupindex. The parser moves the pair into the lookup as that index property's source,LookupKeySource::Hash(LookupHashKey)(an appended variant); the parsedproperty_agreementkeeps only the plain pairs.lookup.keysmaps the other index properties, may not map this one, and is left out when this one is the whole index.
