Basic explanation

What this does: Since #5099, a document can leave out a field that the platform fills in itself when the document arrives, such as normalizedLabel computed from label. Document subscriptions (the filters an app registers to hear about new or changed documents) still looked at the document exactly as the app sent it, so a subscription asking for normalizedLabel == "b0b" never fired for a document that left the field out, even though the platform stored it with "b0b". Subscriptions now look at the document the way the platform stores it.

Value: Apps can subscribe on generated fields, for example "tell me when a handle that reads as b0b is created", and hear about every such document, whether the app that wrote it sent the field or not.

Risks: Very low. Nothing on chain changes: the filter is not consensus code and has no caller in this repository yet. Its one public function gains a platform_version argument, which is the breaking change in the title.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

Follow-up to #5099 (generatedFrom), which listed it. DriveDocumentQueryFilter::matches_document_transition evaluated clauses on create.data(), replace.data() and index_only_delete.data() as sent. A transition may leave a generatedFrom property out for the platform to generate on arrival, so a clause on that property failed for every such transition.

What was done?

  • DocumentTypeBasicMethods::data_as_stored(data, platform_version) (dpp) returns a transition's data as the platform reads it on arrival: every generatedFrom property it leaves out generated, in a copy. On a document type that declares none, which covers every type parsed before protocol version 14, it borrows the data unchanged (Cow::Borrowed) and copies nothing.
  • DriveDocumentQueryFilter::matches_document_transition takes a trailing platform_version and reads a create's and a replace's data, and an indexOnly delete's values, through data_as_stored. A document type the contract lacks fails the match, as validate already refuses such a filter.
  • index_only_transition_entry_path_query, the proof builder the prover and the verifier share, uses data_as_stored too, so it no longer copies the values of a type without generated properties.
  • The book's generatedFrom deep dive names the method and the filter.

Before and after, for a handle type whose normalizedLabel is generated from label, and a create transition carrying { "label": "Bob" }:

Subscription clause Before After
normalizedLabel == "b0b" Fail Pass
normalizedLabel == "bob" Fail Fail
label == "Bob" Pass Pass

The same holds for a replace's new data and for an indexOnly delete's values.

In-place changes to shipped generations

None. The filter and index_only_transition_entry_path_query are not versioned and are not consensus code, and data_as_stored is new.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • rs-drive/src/query/filter.rs: test_matches_a_generated_property_the_transition_leaves_out builds a contract with a generated normalizedLabel on a handle type and a generated normalizedName on an indexOnly entry type, then checks that a create, a replace and an indexOnly delete that leave the property out pass a clause on the generated value and fail one on another value.
  • rs-dpp/.../generated_from_tests.rs: should_read_the_data_as_stored checks the generated copy, and the borrowed data on a type without declarations.

Run locally:

  • cargo test -p drive --lib query::filter: 62 passed
  • cargo test -p drive --lib index_only: 72 passed
  • cargo test -p drive-abci --lib generated_from: 13 passed, including the index-only proof tests that go through the shared builder
  • cargo test -p dpp --features all_features_without_client --lib generated_from: 42 passed
  • cargo check -p drive --no-default-features --features verify
  • cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings on dpp and drive

Breaking Changes

DriveDocumentQueryFilter::matches_document_transition(transition, batch_owner_value) becomes matches_document_transition(transition, batch_owner_value, platform_version). No caller in this repository uses it outside its own tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Document transition filters now evaluate create, replace, and index-only delete data using its stored representation, including generated properties. This helps filters match documents consistently when generated values are omitted from the submitted data.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how generated properties are handled when evaluating document subscription filters.

…tion leaves out

A document subscription filter matched a create's and a replace's data, and
an index-only delete's values, as the transition carried them. A transition
may leave a generatedFrom property out for the platform to generate on
arrival, so a clause on that property never matched a document the platform
stored with it.

DocumentTypeBasicMethods::data_as_stored returns the data with every
generatedFrom property it leaves out generated, borrowing it unchanged on a
document type that declares none. matches_document_transition reads the three
data-carrying transitions through it and takes the platform version to
generate at; the index-only proof builder uses it too, instead of copying
unconditionally.

BREAKING CHANGE: DriveDocumentQueryFilter::matches_document_transition takes a
trailing platform_version argument.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds data_as_stored to convert document data to its stored representation. Document transition filters use that representation for create, replace, and index-only delete clauses. Index-only proof synthesis also uses the conversion.

Changes

Stored-Form Document Data

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add stored-data conversion
packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/methods/mod.rs, packages/rs-dpp/src/data_contract/document_type/class_methods/try_from_schema/v3/generated_from_tests.rs
data_as_stored borrows the input map when no generated properties apply. Otherwise, it fills missing generated properties and returns an owned map. A test covers both cases.
Use stored data in query paths
packages/rs-drive/src/query/filter.rs, packages/rs-drive/src/query/index_only_synthesis.rs, book/src/data-model/documents.md
Transition filtering evaluates create, replace, and index-only delete clauses against stored-form data. Conversion or document-type lookup failures cause the transition check to return Fail. Index-only proof synthesis uses the same conversion. Tests cover generated-property matching and updated platform-version arguments; the documentation describes the filter behavior.

Subscription filtering can do unnecessary allocation work, but matching remains correct. This is a bounded performance concern rather than a merge blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2412d

The change affects which document transitions match subscriptions, but the inspected code does not show a new privilege path. Its public API change and consumers outside this repository remain considerations.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected filter change affects matching against a supplied contract and document type. No production invocation of the changed filter method was identified in the repository; exposure through external consumers is unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Stored-form conversion uses the filter’s resolved document type; lookup and conversion errors are turned into a failed match rather than a passing clause evaluation.

Skip stored-form conversion for empty clauses.

When create or index-only delete clauses are empty, data_as_stored still clones documents that have generated properties. evaluate_clauses does not read the document data for an empty clause list, so the conversion does not affect the match result.

Skip conversion when the relevant clause list is empty, as the replace branch already does.
