Summary

Objects that a data-source row created are now disposed when the row ends as a failed test, in both engine modes. Shared and keyed instances that another test still holds are not disposed early, because disposal goes through the existing object tracker's reference counting.

Root cause

When test building failed for a row, the engine created a FailedExecutableTest with empty arguments. Nothing tracked the row's objects, so they were never disposed:

  • Reflection mode: the generic-resolution catch blocks in TestBuilder had the row's class and method data in hand, but they built the failed test without it.
  • Source-generated mode: GenericConstraintViolationDataSource ran the wrapped row factory and then threw. The returned objects were discarded.

Fix

  • TestDetails gets an internal FailedDataRowObjects. These objects are never passed to the test and do not change its display name.
  • ObjectGraphDiscoverer.DiscoverAndTrackObjects adds FailedDataRowObjects as tracking roots, including their nested objects. Initialization and event-receiver discovery do not see them.
  • TestArgumentRegistrationService no longer skips registration when a failed test has row objects. Failed tests already go through registration and through TestCoordinator, whose finally calls UntrackObjects. The objects are therefore counted when the test is registered for execution and released when it completes.
  • TestBuilder passes the row's class and method data to every failed test it builds after the row's factories ran:
    • type resolution failures (both build paths)
    • source-generated constraint violations
    • instance-data-source failures
    • the generic failure on an empty SkipIfEmpty method source
  • GenericConstraintViolationDataSource now throws an internal GenericConstraintViolationRowException, a subclass of GenericTypeResolutionException that carries the wrapped row. The engine unwraps the row and reports a plain GenericTypeResolutionException with the same message, so the reported failure still matches reflection mode.

Tracking follows the same rules as passing tests: objects are tracked only for tests that are registered for execution after filtering (#6151).

There is no public API change. GenericConstraintViolationDataSource is otherwise as #7102 and #7112 left it.

Tests

  • New tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7123:
    • a generic where T : struct method whose two rows produce disposable class instances
    • a method fed by a keyed ClassDataSource
    • an observer test that depends on both, receives the same keyed instance, and asserts that the per-row objects are disposed and the keyed instance is not
  • New Issue7123Tests in TUnit.Engine.Tests.
  • Before the fix the observer failed in both modes (PerRowDisposable.Created.All(x => x.IsDisposed) was false). After the fix it passes in source-generated and reflection modes.
  • Engine tests, reflection mode, all passing: Issue7123Tests, Issue7107Tests, GenericConstraintValidationTests, FilteredSharedFixtureDisposalTests, KeyedDataSourceTests, DataSourceExceptionPropagationTests, GenericMethodWithDataSourceTests, DataSourceCountTests, Issue7106Tests.
  • TestProject in both modes: Bugs._7107, Bugs._7106 and GenericConstraintValidationTests give the same pass and fail counts as before. The failure messages are unchanged.
  • TUnit.UnitTests (net10.0): all passed. TUnit.PublicAPI (net10.0): passed. TUnit.Engine builds for every TFM.
  • Not run locally: the engine tests in AOT mode, because this machine has no native linker. CI covers them.

Fixes #7123

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Failed tests now retain data-row objects created before construction or generic type resolution fails, allowing per-row disposable objects to be disposed correctly.
    • Shared objects remain available while other tests still use them.

…ests

A data row that failed while its test was being built (a generic constraint
violation or a failed type resolution) created objects that were never
tracked, so disposable data stayed open until the process exited.

Failed tests now carry the row's objects in an internal
TestDetails.FailedDataRowObjects. The object tracker counts them when the
test is registered for execution and releases them when it completes, so
they are disposed through the normal reference counting and shared or keyed
instances that other tests still hold stay alive.

In source-generated mode, GenericConstraintViolationDataSource now throws an
internal GenericConstraintViolationRowException that carries the wrapped
row, and the engine reports a plain GenericTypeResolutionException with the
same message, as reflection mode does.

📝 Walkthrough

Failed test construction now retains data-source row objects, including values from generic constraint failures. Object discovery processes those objects and their nested dependencies. Regression tests cover disposal of per-row objects and the lifetime of a shared object.

The change makes TUnit dispose objects created for data rows whose tests fail during building. One edge case remains: when a class data source creates a new object on every call and a later method row fails, the first object created for that class row is still never disposed. This behavior predates the change and is limited to that edge case, so the PR is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Explanation

Issue #7123 is the active directly linked issue. The change carries objects from failed data-source rows in TestDetails.FailedDataRowObjects, including the source-generated row through GenericConstraintViolationRowException. TestBuilder supplies these objects on the reported failure paths. ObjectGraphDiscoverer.DiscoverAndTrackObjects tracks the objects and nested objects without passing them to initialization or event-receiver discovery. TestArgumentRegistrationService registers failed tests that contain these objects, so normal reference-counted cleanup can release them. The added Issue7123Tests covers per-row disposal and keeps a keyed shared instance alive while another test uses it. The implementation addresses reflection and source-generated modes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production files implement the disposal path required by #7123. The exception carrier preserves row data for source-generated failures. The graph and registration changes support tracking and reference-counted cleanup. The unit, engine, and TestProject tests directly verify row unwrapping, failure counts, disposal, and shared-instance behavior. No unrelated change is established by the available pull-request summary or inspected code.

Review of #7150

I read the diff only. I did not build the PR or run any tests. The code-review skill failed to run, so this is a manual review.

The PR looks sound. Routing failed-row objects through the existing reference-counted tracker is the right design. It avoids a separate disposal path, and shared and keyed instances stay safe. Keeping FailedDataRowObjects internal and out of initialization and event-receiver discovery is also a good choice. There is no public API change.

Minor observations, none blocking:

  • Exception unwrapping: GenericConstraintViolationRowException is unwrapped in only two places, via UnpackConstraintViolation. If a new catch site is added that skips it, the internal exception type would reach users in the failure message. A short comment on the exception type, or a test asserting the reported type, would guard against that. The PR says the failure messages are unchanged.
  • Allocation: CombineRowObjects allocates a new array only when both class and method data are present. That only happens on the failure path, so it is fine.
  • Observer test timing: the observer's "all per-row objects disposed" assertion depends on disposal in TestCoordinator's finally completing before the dependent test starts. DependsOn should guarantee this, but it is worth watching for flakiness in CI.
  • Mode coverage: the PR notes AOT mode was not run locally. CI covers it.

Approving in spirit.

… to unwrap

Unwrapping a constraint-violating row invokes the inner Func of a TestDataRow<Func<T>>,
which can throw inside the row's catch block and abandon the method's remaining rows.
Fall back to tracking the raw row values instead, and cover the unpacking with unit tests.

Review dispositions:

  • greptile P1, a throwing TestDataRow<Func<T>> hid later rows: fixed in 191977e. The thread is resolved.
  • claude-review, unwrapping the internal exception type: the new ConstraintViolationUnpackingTests check that the reported exception is exactly GenericTypeResolutionException, so the internal GenericConstraintViolationRowException does not reach users from either catch site.
  • claude-review, allocation and observer timing: no change. The allocation only happens on the failure path. The observer relies on DependsOn ordering, and it passed locally in reflection and source-generated modes.

CI: every failing check on ae20a6f was cancelled, not failed. The cancellations were in the .NET, culture, smoke, CodeQL and claude-review runs. Before the cancellation, the logs show zero test failures. modularpipeline (fr-FR) and nuget-package-tests-windows finished green. The new push starts CI again.

Review of #7150

The approach is sound. It reuses the existing ref-counted object tracker (FailedDataRowObjects as extra tracking roots, with registration no longer skipped) instead of adding a parallel disposal path. Shared and keyed instances therefore only lose one reference. I reviewed the diff only and did not build or run the tests.

What I checked:

  • UnpackConstraintViolation never throws inside a row's catch block, and a unit test covers that case. The raw-row fallback is reasonable.
  • classData and methodData are hoisted out of the try in CreateInstanceForMethodDataSources, so objects created before a later failure are still handed to the failed test.
  • The new engine test covers both modes with a per-row disposable and a keyed shared one.

Minor suggestions, none blocking:

  1. In the fallback, rowData = row can contain TestDataRow<> wrappers rather than the disposable values. Tracking them is harmless but does nothing. A one-line comment saying so would help. Alternatively, unwrap each element individually so the values that were created can still be tracked.
  2. CombineRowObjects allocates only on the failure path, so that is fine.
  3. DependsOn is used so a filtered run still executes the failing classes. It works, but it is a little fragile, because the observer test depends on the other classes running first. The comment already explains this.

Overall this looks good to merge.

When unwrapping a constraint-violating row throws, UnpackConstraintViolation
fell back to the raw row. For a TestDataRow that meant tracking the wrapper,
which is never disposable. Track the wrapped value instead, and nothing when
the value is the Func that threw, since that Func created nothing.

Review dispositions for b157923.

CI (modularpipeline windows-latest, run 39337171332). I think this is a timing flake, not a regression from this PR. The only failures were KeyedNotInParallelCrossPhaseTests.UnconstrainedTest_RunsAlongsideKeyedNotInParallelTest and KeyedNotInParallel_DifferentKeys_RunInParallel in reflection mode. Each test gives its TUnit.TestProject child process a 30 s budget, and the runner killed it at 30.3 s ("Underlying process ... was forcefully terminated"). No test assertion failed. This PR does not touch scheduling. Locally both tests pass in both modes in 3.5 s, and ubuntu passed on the same commit. The new push starts a fresh run, so I did not rerun the old one.

CodeRabbit thread (first class-data fetch). No change; I replied with evidence and resolved the thread. The first classDataFactory() instance also leaks when the rows pass, which I confirmed with a probe in both modes. #7157 already tracks it.

github-actions review (22:49):

  1. Fallback tracks TestDataRow<> wrappers. Fixed in b157923. When unwrapping throws, UnpackConstraintViolation now tracks the wrapped value. If that value is the Func that threw, it tracks nothing, because the Func created nothing. Other rows still fall back to their raw values. ConstraintViolationUnpackingTests.Throwing_Row_Func_Tracks_Nothing covers this.
  2. CombineRowObjects allocation. No change. It only allocates on the failure path.
  3. DependsOn ordering for the observer test. No change. The comment in the test already explains it, and it passed again locally in both modes.

Local runs: ConstraintViolationUnpackingTests (3 passed), plus the Issue7123Tests, GenericConstraintValidationTests and KeyedNotInParallelCrossPhaseTests engine tests in both modes (48 passed).

Review of #7150

I read the diff only. I didn't build the change or run any tests, and the automated code-review skill failed to run, so this is a manual review.

The approach is sound. Failed rows now carry their data objects in an internal FailedDataRowObjects list. The existing ref-counting tracker adopts those objects as roots, so keyed and shared instances aren't disposed early. That reuses the tracker's reference counting and avoids a separate disposal path. The change adds no public API, and UnpackConstraintViolation never throws inside a catch block. Tests cover both engine modes, the shared-instance case, and the case where a row's factory throws.

Non-blocking suggestions:

  1. Where the unwrap happens. GenericConstraintViolationRowException is only unwrapped at the two TestBuilder catch sites that call UnpackConstraintViolation. If another path catches GenericTypeResolutionException, such as the streaming build path or a future caller, the subclass would leak through. Its message matches the plain exception, so the only difference is the exception type. Consider unwrapping in CreateFailedTestForDataGenerationError itself, so every failed-test path gets it and callers can't forget.
  2. Optional parameters. classData and methodData default to null on three overloads, so a new call site can silently omit the row objects and reintroduce the leak. A small FailedRowContext record would make the omission harder.
  3. Test marking. FailedRowDisposalObserverTests is marked ExpectedResult.Failure even though it passes. The comment explains why, and Issue7123Tests verifies the result.

I found nothing that should block the merge.

UnpackConstraintViolation only ran at two TestBuilder catch sites. Any other
path that caught a GenericConstraintViolationRowException would have reported
the internal type. Both failed-test factories now pass their exception through
TestBuilder.ToReportedException, which reports the plain
GenericTypeResolutionException that reflection mode uses.
