Fixes #7107

Stacked on #7102 (branch fix/generic-constraint-mode-parity, which fixes #7097). This PR is based on that branch and builds on its GenericConstraintViolationDataSource mechanism. It must merge after #7102. Until then, the diff against main also shows #7102's changes.

Summary

A generic type argument that breaks a constraint now gives one failed test per invalid row or type, with the same name and message in source-generated and reflection modes. Valid rows and types in the same class keep running. A bad class row no longer takes down discovery of the whole assembly in reflection mode.

Case (#7107) Source-gen before Reflection before Both modes now
1 class rows [Arguments(1)] [Arguments("x")], where T : struct "x" row dropped [ASSEMBLY SCAN FAILED], 49 of ~18,660 tests discovered Run passes for 1; one failed Run
1b only class row invalid 0 tests assembly scan failed one failed Run
2 class-level [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(string))] dropped assembly scan failed Run passes for int; one failed Run
3 method row infers bad class T dropped 0 tests one failed Run (see notes for the valid row in reflection mode)
4 method-level [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(string))] dropped [GENERIC METHOD RESOLUTION FAILED], raw ArgumentException text Run<int> passes; one failed Run
5 [Matrix<string>("a", "b")] with where T : struct 0 tests 2 failed 2 failed Invalid (one per matrix row)

Every failure has the message GenericTypeResolutionException: Type 'String' does not satisfy the 'struct' constraint for generic parameter 'T' (or the matching class, base-type or interface wording). In both modes, the failed tests have the same display name, class node, method node and source location, and distinct test ids.

Root causes

  • Reflection, class rows and class [GenerateGenericTest] (cases 1, 1b, 2): ReflectionTestDataCollector.DiscoverGenericTests rethrew the MakeGenericType ArgumentException as InvalidOperationException. ProcessAssemblyAsync caught it and replaced the whole assembly with one AssemblyScanFailed test.
  • Reflection, method rows on a generic class (case 3): DiscoverGenericTests returns early when the class has no class-level data source, so these rows are never discovered (Generic test classes drop [Arguments] rows that infer the same type arguments (both modes; reflection runs no method rows) #7106).
  • Reflection, method [GenerateGenericTest] (case 4): ResolveMethodInstantiations reported the raw MakeGenericMethod message through a [GENERIC METHOD RESOLUTION FAILED] test.
  • Source-gen, class type arguments (cases 1, 1b, 2, 3): TryAddInstantiation returned when ValidateClassTypeConstraints failed. A TestEntry<T> cannot be emitted for a closed type that breaks its own constraints, and when no valid instantiation was left, the method emitted nothing.
  • Source-gen, method [GenerateGenericTest] and IInfersType<T> (cases 4, 5): these call sites did not opt into fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102's reportMethodConstraintViolation, so the instantiation was dropped.

The fix

Shared (TUnit.Core + engine execution path)

  • New GenericConstraintViolationEntry (public, [EditorBrowsable(Never)], for generated code) and SourceRegistrar.RegisterGenericConstraintViolations(Type, Func<GenericConstraintViolationEntry[]>). Source-gen registers class violations against the open generic type in Sources.TestEntries, through a new internal ITestEntrySource, so AotTestDataCollector needed no change.
  • Internal GenericConstraintViolationTestMetadata: both modes build class-violation failures from it. Its method data sources are one GenericConstraintViolationDataSource per message, so the failures go through the same data-generation-error path that fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102 uses.
  • GenericConstraintViolationDataSource gains a (message, rowSource) constructor. It yields one failing row per row of the original source (never zero), without generating the row values. Matrix and [MethodDataSource] violations then give one failure per row, as reflection mode does.
  • TestBuilder: a GenericTypeResolutionException thrown by one data row's factory now fails that row only, and the build continues. Before, the outer catch turned the whole test into one failure. Failed tests from per-row generic resolution errors now get the row's data indices in their test id, so several failing rows no longer share one id.

Reflection

  • ReflectionGenericTypeResolver.FindConstraintViolation(Type|MethodInfo, Type[]) checks constraints up front, with TestGenericTypeResolver's wording (struct, class, base type, interface; constraint types such as IEquatable<T> are substituted). If MakeGenericType still rejects the arguments, the fallback message is the same as the generator's.
  • New ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations collects class violations per test method: class [GenerateGenericTest] types, then class rows, then method [Arguments] rows that infer the class type. It emits one violation metadata per method.
  • DiscoverGenericTests and its streaming twin skip violating instantiations into that collector. Any other type-creation error now gives a [GENERIC TYPE CREATION FAILED] test for that type instead of throwing. That is what the streaming twin already did, and it means the assembly scan never fails.
  • ResolveMethodInstantiations: [GenerateGenericTest] types that break the method's constraints are reported through GenericConstraintViolationTestMetadata, with the shared wording.

Source generator

  • TryAddInstantiation records class violations: their source (GenerateGenericTest, class Arguments, method Arguments) and the attribute that produced each one. Every row or type is reported once, even when several inference passes visit it. Violations are ordered the way reflection discovers them. GenerateTestMetadata emits a ConstraintViolations array plus a registration, even when no valid instantiation is left (case 1b).
  • Method violations from [GenerateGenericTest] and IInfersType<T> are now reported. All violations of one concrete class share one entry, with one wrapped data source per invalid row source. Each failing row therefore gets its own data source index and test id. The type-key dedupe still applies to valid rows; invalid rows are keyed by attribute, so two invalid rows that infer the same type both fail, as in reflection.
  • Violation entries are named after the method alone (Invalid, not Invalid<string>), as in reflection mode. An exact tree-node filter such as /*/*/Class/Invalid now matches in both modes. Valid entries keep their existing names.
  • ValidateTypeParameterConstraints (method constraints) now accepts a type argument that equals its base-class constraint, as ValidateClassTypeConstraints, C# and reflection already do. Without this, a valid [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(Animal))] on where T : Animal would now be reported as a failure instead of being dropped.

AOT and trimming: the generated code adds only typeof(Open<>), string literals, constructor calls and an object initializer; no new reflection. The new Core APIs carry the DynamicallyAccessedMembers annotations that TestMetadata.TestClassType requires. The reflection-only code lives in ReflectionGenericTypeResolver and a new class marked [RequiresUnreferencedCode]/[RequiresDynamicCode].

Tests

  • tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7107/GenericClassConstraintViolationTests.cs: one fixture per case in the issue, plus several invalid class rows across two test methods (struct and IEquatable<T> violations), two invalid method rows that infer the same type, and an unrelated ConstraintViolationNeighbourTests control.
  • tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7107Tests.cs (Reflection and AOT modes): counts, names, messages and distinct ids per case. Bad_Class_Row_Does_Not_Hide_Other_Tests_In_The_Assembly and Bad_Class_Row_Does_Not_Hide_Generic_Tests_Elsewhere_In_The_Assembly check that other tests in the assembly are still discovered while the bad class rows exist. Before the fix, reflection mode discovered 0 tests for any _7107 filter.
  • New generator snapshot Tests7107.Test. GenericConstraintValidationTests.Constraint_Violating_Rows_Emit_Failing_Entries (from fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102) is updated for the plain violation names and the wrapped row sources.
  • TUnit.PublicAPI Core snapshots updated for all four TFMs.

Local results (Windows, net10.0 unless stated):

Run Result
TestProject Bugs._7107/*/*, source-gen 23 total: 8 passed, 15 failed (all expected)
TestProject Bugs._7107/*/*, --reflection 22 total: 7 passed, 15 failed (all expected). The one fewer pass is case 3's valid row (#7106). Before the fix: 0 tests (assembly scan failed)
TestProject GenericConstraintValidationTests/* (#7102), both modes 9 total: 4 passed, 5 failed (unchanged)
TestProject /**[EngineTest=Pass], source-gen / reflection 5969 / 5956 total, 0 failed
TUnit.Engine.Tests Issue7107Tests 11 passed in Reflection mode; AOT cases skip locally (CI only). Source-gen was checked by running each of its filters against TestProject directly: same counts and names
TUnit.Engine.Tests GenericConstraintValidationTests, GenericMethodWithDataSourceTests, DataSourceExceptionPropagationTests, MatrixTests*, SkipTests, ExpectedStateTests pass
TUnit.Engine.Tests, full suite (Reflection) 528 total: 360 passed, 162 skipped (AOT/OS), 6 failed. All 6 were environment problems: DefaultHtmlReportCliTests ×4 and VB.Test passed once their test projects were built in Release. FSharp.Test fails because FSharp.Core 11.0.0.0 cannot be loaded on this machine; that is unrelated
TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests net10.0/net9.0/net8.0: 187 passed each; net472: 186 passed
TUnit.PublicAPI 5/5 pass (Core snapshots updated for all four TFMs)
TUnit.UnitTests, source-gen 533 total, 0 failed
TUnit.UnitTests, --reflection 4 failures that already fail on the base branch and that #7094 fixes (EmptyStaticDataSource_ShouldYieldOneEmptyResult, TestWithAsyncValueTaskDataSource, GenericTestWithData<Int32>, InitializeEntity)
Trim/AOT analyzers (EnableTrimAnalyzer/EnableAotAnalyzer on TestProject) no IL warnings from the new generated code or the _7107 fixtures

I did not run an AOT publish locally (no native linker on this machine). CI covers source-gen and AOT through TUnit.Engine.Tests.

Notes and overlap

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Generic tests with invalid type arguments or constraint violations are reported as failed tests with relevant error details, rather than being silently skipped or disrupting test discovery.
    • Valid rows continue to run when other rows fail, and each invalid row is reported separately.
    • Constraint checks correctly account for class and method type arguments, including nested and variant interface constraints.
    • Generic struct constraints correctly reject nullable value types.

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in [#7107] and [#7097]. Reflection discovery records class and method constraint violations instead of failing assembly discovery. Source generation registers invalid class arguments and reports invalid method rows. GenericConstraintViolationDataSource and TestBuilder preserve one failure per invalid row, including typed data sources, while valid rows continue. Constraint-specific messages, distinct row IDs, skipped-row behavior, and both execution modes are covered by the reported regression tests. The documented omission of valid method rows on generic classes belongs to [#7106], not these requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within [#7107] and [#7097]. The Core registration, violation metadata, reflection resolver, source-generator updates, and row-specific build handling directly implement cross-mode failure reporting. Constraint substitution and validation updates support accurate constraint results. The added tests and API snapshots verify this behavior. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Review: #7112 (generic constraint violations, both modes)

I read the new engine and core pieces. I did not build or run the tests, and the automated code-review skill failed to run, so this is a manual read.

What looks good

  • Both modes build the failed tests through one type, GenericConstraintViolationTestMetadata, fed by GenericConstraintViolationDataSource. That keeps names, messages and ordering the same by construction, and it is a better design than two parallel implementations.
  • Reflection mode now reports a bad class row instead of failing the assembly scan.
  • The AOT annotations (DynamicallyAccessedMembers, RequiresUnreferencedCode) are applied consistently.
  • GenericConstraintViolationEntrySource.AddFactory handles registration both before and after resolution, under a lock.
  • Source-generator snapshots, the public API snapshots and engine tests are included.

Concerns (non-blocking)

  1. Attributes dropped on failure tests. AttributeFactory = static () => [] means [Skip], [Explicit], [Category] and [Property] on the original method are ignored for the failing entry. An explicit or skipped test would still report a failure, and a category filter would not select it. Consider passing the method's real attribute factory through. If this is intentional, say so in a comment.
  2. Duplicate inference logic. InferClassTypeArguments in reflection mode re-implements the generator's class-argument inference from method rows. Two implementations can drift apart, and the parity tests only cover the cases they exercise. Add a test with mixed null values, multiple generic parameters and a partially inferable row to pin the behaviour.
  3. Array growth in AddFactory. After resolution, _entries = [.. _entries, .. factory()] rebuilds the array on every call. This only happens on late registration, so it is not a hot path.
  4. Stacked PR. This PR must merge after fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102. Please confirm the diff is rebased cleanly once that lands, and that the snapshots are regenerated.

Overall this is a solid design that makes the two modes consistent. My main ask is concern 1. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Review: #7112 (generic constraint violations, #7107)

I read the PR description and the main new engine and core files (ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations, GenericConstraintViolationEntry). I did not read the source generator changes in full or run any tests. The code-review skill errored in this run, so this was a manual pass.

What I like

  • Both modes build failures through the same GenericConstraintViolationTestMetadata and GenericConstraintViolationDataSource. That is the right way to get matching names, messages and ids, and it avoids two parallel implementations of the failure wording.
  • Failures are now per invalid row. One bad class row no longer fails the whole assembly scan in reflection mode.
  • Snapshot and PublicAPI updates are included, as are Engine tests that cover both modes.

Concerns and suggestions

  1. Ordering is a contract kept by comments. The messages must come out in the same order in both modes: class-level GenerateGenericTest, then class rows, then method rows. That order lives in two places, the source generator and ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations. Test ids depend on the order. The Engine tests cover parity for the cases they include. A test with all three sources mixed in one class would catch drift. Please confirm one exists.
  2. Empty AttributeFactory and filter data. The violation metadata has no attributes, categories, Skip or DependsOn. GenericConstraintViolationEntrySource.GetFilterData also reports empty Categories and Properties. A [Skip] or [Category] test with a bad type argument will still run and fail, and --treenode-filter on categories will not match it. This is probably acceptable for an error report, but say so in the PR notes. Alternatively, copy the method's attributes into the metadata.
  3. Public API surface. GenericConstraintViolationEntry is a new public type that is hidden from the editor. It is only needed by generated code. If possible, keep it internal and use a generator-only registration path. Otherwise keep it as is and note that it is not covered by compatibility guarantees.
  4. AddFactory after resolve. GenericConstraintViolationEntrySource.AddFactory re-allocates the whole entries array on every late add ([.. _entries, .. factory()]). It is also invoked under the lock while Resolve() reads _entries lock-free. That is safe because _entries is volatile and replaced atomically. But Count and GetFilterData(index) can see different arrays if a late add lands between calls. Please snapshot the array, or document that late registration cannot happen after discovery starts.
  5. Reflection inference is narrower than the generator. InferClassTypeArguments uses value.GetType() and skips null values, so it only handles direct T parameters. The generator may infer differently for T[], IEnumerable<T> or similar. The PR notes mention Generic test classes drop [Arguments] rows that infer the same type arguments (both modes; reflection runs no method rows) #7106 as a known gap. Please add a test pinning the current behaviour for those shapes, so a mismatch between modes is visible.
  6. Reflection and AOT. The DynamicallyAccessedMembers annotations on the primary-constructor parameter look consistent. Please confirm AOT publish is clean, since the reflection types carry RequiresUnreferencedCode and the entry-source side is used from source-gen mode.

I found no blocking correctness bug in the parts I read. The mode-parity design is sound. I'd like confirmation of the mixed-source parity test (1) and a decision on skip and category handling (2) before merge. This PR is also stacked on #7102 and must merge after it.

thomhurst added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 18, 2026
#7112 grew from #7102's first commit, so both branches changed the same
generator, wrapper and TestBuilder code in different ways. This merge
stacks #7112 on #7102 (which already contains main) so the shared parts
are fixed once:

- GenericConstraintViolationDataSource: #7102's review fixes. Created via
Create(message[, inner]); it keeps the wrapped source's
IAccessesInstanceData, runs each wrapped row factory before failing the
row, and mirrors the inner source's SkipIfEmpty/DeferEnumeration. The
engine injects properties into the wrapped source. Create(message)
keeps #7112's single failing row for [GenerateGenericTest] and class
violation entries. The row-counting path that swallowed enumeration
  errors is gone.
- TestBuilder: failed rows get ids with their class, method and repeat
indexes in the collected and streaming builders.
- Generator: keeps #7112's violation model and constraint rules, plus
  main's #7100 (same-type [Arguments] rows) and #7110 (type-argument
  identity and names).
- Method constraints that name a class type parameter
  (`where U : IEnumerable<T>`) are checked with the class's type
arguments substituted in, in source-gen and in reflection mode, so a
valid instantiation no longer fails and an invalid one gives the same
  message in both modes.

Review of #7112

I read the new reflection-side collector and the GenericConstraintViolationEntry / metadata / entry-source types. I did not run the tests. The automated skill run failed, so I read the code by hand and did not read the whole diff.

The approach is good. Both modes build failures through a single GenericConstraintViolationTestMetadata and GenericConstraintViolationDataSource. That keeps names and messages identical across modes by construction, not by duplicated logic. Not letting one bad row fail the whole assembly scan in reflection mode is a clear improvement. The snapshots and public API files are updated.

Things worth a second look:

  1. Mode parity depends on ordering. The messages must come out in the same order in both modes: class-level GenerateGenericTest types, then class rows, then method rows. That order is only documented in comments. The generator and ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations each have to reproduce it, and nothing enforces it. A parity test with several invalid rows of different kinds on one method would lock it in. Generic class type arguments that violate constraints are dropped in source-gen and fail the whole assembly scan in reflection mode #7107 case 1b and case 5 may already cover part of this.

  2. GenericConstraintViolationEntrySource.AddFactory after resolve. Once _entries is set, AddFactory appends to it. Count and the indices can then change after GetFilterData or Materialize may already have run. This is probably unreachable, because registration happens before discovery. A guard or a Debug.Assert would make that assumption explicit. Alternatively, only allow adding before the first resolve. Also, _entries = [.. _entries, .. factory()] reallocates the whole array on every add.

  3. Filter metadata drops categories. GetFilterData returns empty Categories, Properties and DependsOn. A run filtered by category or property will therefore silently skip these failures. That may be intended, since a constraint error is a build-time problem. But a green filtered run can then hide a broken test, so a short comment on the choice would help.

  4. CreateMetadata attribute lookup. testMethod.GetCustomAttribute<TestAttribute>() throws AmbiguousMatchException if a method has more than one TestAttribute-derived attribute. Elsewhere in discovery this lookup is probably guarded already. A try or a GetCustomAttributes().FirstOrDefault() would be safer, given that this PR exists to stop discovery failures.

  5. Inference duplicates generator logic. InferClassTypeArguments re-implements, in reflection, the generator's rules for inferring class type arguments from Arguments. Examples: first value wins, null is skipped, and any uninferrable parameter means return null. If the generator's rules diverge, for example by handling derived or array parameter types, parity breaks silently. A shared inference helper, or a test that drives both through the same cases, would reduce that risk.

  6. Known gap. Valid method rows that infer a bad class T are not run in reflection mode (tracked in Generic test classes drop [Arguments] rows that infer the same type arguments (both modes; reflection runs no method rows) #7106). The PR notes this. Good to keep that issue linked.

  7. Stacking. The PR says it must merge after fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102, but its base is main. Make sure the merge order is enforced so main never has a window where this builds without the data source it depends on.

Overall this is a solid change and I have no blocking concerns. Items 2 and 4 are small robustness fixes I'd make before merging.

Review: #7112 (generic constraint violations, one failed test per row)

I read the PR description and the file list, and looked closely at ReflectionGenericConstraintViolations.cs. I did not read every one of the roughly 5.9k added lines (most are snapshots and tests), and I ran no tests. The code-review skill errored, so this is a manual review.

What looks good

Concerns

  1. Stacked PR. This is stacked on fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102 but targets main, so the diff includes fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102's changes. It must not merge first. Retargeting to fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102's branch, or merging fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102 first, would keep the diff reviewable and prevent an accidental early merge.
  2. Duplicated inference logic. InferClassTypeArguments re-implements the generator's rule for inferring class type arguments from method rows. Two implementations of the same rule can drift apart over time. The notes say the valid rows of these methods still don't run in reflection mode (Generic test classes drop [Arguments] rows that infer the same type arguments (both modes; reflection runs no method rows) #7106). Consider moving the inference rule into one shared place in TUnit.Core that both modes call. A parity test over many shapes would also catch drift.
  3. Inference limited to exact value.GetType(). typeArguments[position] ??= value.GetType() takes the first value and ignores any conflicting later one. It also doesn't handle a generic parameter nested inside another type, such as List<T>. If the generator treats these cases differently, the two modes can disagree. Please confirm they match, or add a test for it.
  4. CreateMetadata allocation and lookup. It calls GetCustomAttribute<TestAttribute> once per method and AddMethodRowViolations re-enumerates attributes. This only runs on classes that are already generic, so it's cheap. I'd still avoid doing it for non-violating classes. The _messagesByMethod == null early exit already does that.
  5. "Unknown" and line 0 fallback. If TestAttribute is missing, the failed test shows an unknown source location. This matters little, but a comment saying when it can happen would help.

No blocking issues found in the parts I read. I'd address #1 before merging and consider #2 as a follow-up.
