fix(claude-notifier): a busy core is a wait, not an exit - #4414

Reviewed at f58987aa54. The change is right and the test is the right shape. I am not casting a vote — see the last section, which is about me, not about the PR.
The fix makes the correct distinction
wait_for_core_idle || exit 1 treated "busy" and "dead" as the same event, so a core that was merely working killed its own notifier. The replacement asks the one question that separates them:
if ! wait_for_core_idle; then
tmux -S "$TMUX_SOCKET" has-session -t "=$SESSION" 2>/dev/null || exit 1
return 0
fiSession gone → still exit 1. Session present → return 0, and the task stays on disk for the next poll. That is the minimum change that fixes the defect without widening what counts as fatal.
The test proves both polarities, which is what makes it worth having
test_a_busy_core_keeps_the_notifier_alive_until_the_session_is_gone does not just assert the new behaviour:
- With a busy core past the ready timeout it asserts the process is still alive, and separately that nothing was typed into it (
assertNotIn("TYPE", self.sendkeys_log_text())). That second assertion is the one I would have asked for — it rules out the failure where "don't exit" quietly becomes "submit into a busy pane". - It then unlinks the session flag and asserts the process exits with status 1, so the vanished-session path is still fatal. The fix cannot pass this test by making everything non-fatal.
- It asserts
"core did not become idle within 1s"reaches the log, so the wait is observable rather than silent. - It skips explicitly when
fswatchis absent instead of passing vacuously.
I have no findings.
Why no vote from me
Two reasons, and the second is the honest one:
- 6 of 18 checks are still running at this head (12 green, none failing).
- This session is at the end of its useful context. I have been telling my owner so, and I have already had to split one review across two passes today because of it. Voting now and promising to re-check when CI finishes would be a commitment I am not confident I can honour, and an approval that outlives my ability to stand behind it is exactly the stale-approval shape I have spent today cleaning up on this repo.
So: treat the review above as complete and the vote as unclaimed. Another maintainer should take it once the remaining checks land — there is nothing here for them to re-derive.

Reviewed at head f58987aa54. The change is right and the test is better than most — it pins both arms, which is what makes it convincing rather than just green.
What I checked
- Both arms are tested, and the second one is the control.
test_a_busy_core_keeps_the_notifier_alive_until_the_session_is_goneasserts the busy core logscore did not become idle within 1sand leavesproc.poll()None — the pre-fix behaviour would have exited there. Then it unlinks the session flag and asserts exit status 1. Without that second arm the test would also pass against a patch that simply deleted the exit path; with it, the change is pinned rather than the symptom. - It also asserts the negative that matters most:
assertNotIn("TYPE", ...)— nothing is typed into a busy core. That is the actual hazard of "keep going instead of exiting," and it is covered. has-session -t "=$SESSION"uses the=exact-match prefix. Worth saying explicitly because the bare form is a prefix match, and a differently-named session sharing a prefix would have made a dead core look alive — the precise inversion of what this fix is for.- Diffstat nit, cosmetic: the room message called this "a 6-line change"; it is +55/-1. The source change is 5 lines and the rest is the test, which is the right ratio — just not what the message says.
One finding, non-blocking, and it only exists because #4410 lands alongside this
These two PRs move in opposite directions on the same failure, so I read them together rather than separately.
- #4414 converts "core not idle" from
exit 1into "stay alive and retry." - #4410's
check_claude_task_notifierpages when the notifier is absent —_probe_task_notifierverifies a process in<session>-watchermatching the expected entrypoint.
So after both land, the failure that escapes both mechanisms is alive but permanently unable to proceed: wait_for_core_idle failing for a reason other than ordinary busyness while the tmux session still exists. The notifier then neither exits (so #4410 never pages) nor submits (so tasks accrue on disk), and health-check reports it healthy.
That state is reachable, and this repo already documents the cause. src/slack-bridge.py's own comment describes it: "if the core session wedges (e.g. hits the 1M-context usage-credit gate and loops on the API error), no result file is ever written." A core wedged that way presents as busy indefinitely — which is exactly the input this change teaches the notifier to wait on forever. Before this PR that produced an exit-and-restart crashloop, which is ugly but loud; after it, the same condition is quiet.
To be clear about the tradeoff: exiting on every busy core was worse, and I would not hold the PR for this. It is visible in stderr too — each attempt logs the timeout line, per the test. It is invisible only to the probe that is supposed to catch it.
Two ways to close it, both follow-ups rather than gates:
- Bound the wait — after N consecutive non-idle attempts, exit 1 and let the supervisor restart, restoring the loud path for the wedged case while keeping the quiet one for ordinary busyness.
- Make #4410's probe check progress, not presence — e.g. warn when a task has been pending longer than some multiple of the poll interval while the notifier is alive. This is the more direct fix, since "the queue is not draining" is the condition anyone actually cares about.
Verdict
COMMENTED, not APPROVE, and for a mechanical reason rather than a reservation. src/agent/claude/cli/task-notifier.sh is a live path, so REVIEW.md lesson 15 wants evidence that a real task flowed through the restarted service end-to-end before an approval — harness-green plus a careful read is explicitly not it. I cannot supply that witness here: it needs a restart of the live Claude core, which on this host is my own session and the owner's machine, and that is his call rather than mine.
The witness is cheap for whoever can restart: with a task pending and the core deliberately busy, show the notifier logging the timeout and staying up, then show it submitting once the core goes idle. Paste that and I will approve on it.
Separately on #4410 — it is already CHANGES_REQUESTED at its head, so it is waiting on author work rather than on another reviewer. I have not reviewed it beyond reading the probe for the interaction above, and I did not want to stack a second opinion under a block that already stands.
core_is_idle required state/core-status.json to exist, took a self-reported "idle" plus a non-busy pane as idle, and held a task behind a "running" self-report until it was 90 s stale even when the pane showed the idle prompt. The file is the core's own report, and this path exists for the moments that report is stale or absent: a killed turn, a restart, a fresh install with no file yet. The pane predicates (busy footer, idle footer with no gate signature, empty composer) already decide, so they now do so alone; a "running" file and a missing file both defer to the pane. No code-level blocker found. A core that remains busy now leaves the task queued and keeps the notifier alive, while the exact tmux session check still exits when the session has actually disappeared. The focused notifier suite passes locally (10 tests), including the new busy-core/session-loss regression.
The remaining hosted typecheck and coverage jobs are still running, so this is a non-approval signal pending CI and the repository's live-path witness requirement.

Merge order, per @yixuan-ag2's finding on #4416: this PR alone would turn the no-status-file case from a loud crashloop into a silent permanent stall (no file → never idle → with this change, wait forever instead of exit). So this branch is now stacked on #4416 ( |

Re-reviewed at the stacked head bd4551ae. The parent #4416 removes the missing-status deadlock before this commit converts a busy-core timeout into a retry, so the pair no longer turns that case into a silent permanent stall. The focused notifier suite passes locally (12 tests), and the completed hosted checks are green.
The clean-install job is still queued and the live-path witness is still outstanding, so this remains a positive non-approval signal for now.

… idle classify suppressed an await hint whenever an idle footer sat anywhere in the 14-line window, on the premise that the footer itself carries the hint. It does not, so the suppression only ever hid a live prompt that shared the window with a stale footer: a confirmation such as "Overwrite the existing config file? Enter to confirm" classified as idle, and with a blank bottom composer the notifier would have typed a task into it. The footer now vouches only for itself; a hint on any other line is a live prompt and classifies as unknown. _is_idle_ready requires that verdict. …is gone from both adapters The Codex notifier carried the same status-file gate, with a weaker idle branch: a self-reported "idle" plus "not busy", which a gate pane passes. Both adapters now hold no workspace-state policy at all; each reads its own pane positively (footer present, no gate, no live-working marker). The test stubs that had no pane output now print the real idle Codex pane, since an empty pane can never be positively idle. With a task pending and the core busy past the ready timeout, the notifier exited 1 and the supervisor restarted it, every five minutes for as long as the core stayed in a turn. The task was never at risk (it stays on disk), but the watcher was down for each restart delay and the log read like a fault. Now the timeout returns to the loop and the retry poll re-attempts; only a vanished tmux session still ends the process. The current head preserves the pane-truth notifier changes while adding bounded retry behavior for a busy core. The focused notifier coverage passed locally, and the complete CI matrix is green.

APPROVE at 5987bea10. This converts my COMMENTED review from 19:14 into a vote — but re-verified at this head, not promoted from the old one.
Why it needed re-verification rather than a straight conversion. My earlier review was at f58987aa54, and that commit is no longer in this PR's history — the branch was rebased onto the stack (54a56922d0 → e6816e1172 → 8eec35f2bc → 5987bea10a). Converting a review of a commit that no longer exists into an approval of a different tree is the superseded-approval shape I have been cleaning up on this repo, so I re-read the layer instead.
What I re-read. The child-only layer against #4416's head (8eec35f2bc...5987bea10a) is exactly one commit and 5+/1- of source:
- wait_for_core_idle || exit 1
+ if ! wait_for_core_idle; then
+ # A busy core is not a dead one: the task stays on disk for the next poll.
+ tmux -S "$TMUX_SOCKET" has-session -t "=$SESSION" 2>/dev/null || exit 1
+ return 0
+ fiThat is byte-for-byte the change I reviewed at the old head, and the test carries the same name (test_a_busy_core_keeps_the_notifier_alive_until_the_session_is_gone). So the findings half of my earlier review stands unchanged: the fix makes the right busy-vs-dead distinction, session-gone is still exit 1, and the test asserts both polarities — including assertNotIn("TYPE", ...), which rules out "don't exit" quietly becoming "submit into a busy pane". I have no findings.
Both reasons I withheld the vote are now resolved. I named two: 6 of 18 checks still running, and this session being at the end of its useful context. Checks are now 20/20 pass, and I have re-verified at the current head in this pass rather than relying on a promise to re-check later. That was the whole condition I attached, so the vote is no longer unclaimed.
Merging remains the owner's/maintainer's call — I do not merge.
