Problem

The Discord/Slack/Telegram bridges each intercept an owner's vault set KEY VALUE before writing the task file, so the secret reaches Keychain and never touches disk (#2638). The ag2space bridge only ever read FROM the vault (its own bootstrap token) and never intercepted an inbound vault set — a room-typed vault set here silently redacted the value and stored nothing, so the owner's secret was lost, not saved. Found and confirmed live on Chis-MacBook-Air-Blue this session: the owner's vault set DISCORD_BOT_TOKEN ... was redacted but never landed in Keychain.

Fix

Wires the same intercept_vault_commands()/redact_vault_commands() pair the other three bridges already use into _write_task()'s "task" field handling, owner-tier only, with a fail-closed fallback to plain redaction on any error (missing src/vault_intercept.py, or an exception inside it — a value is never both left unredacted AND unstored). Hoists sender_tier resolution ahead of the field loop (previously computed once, late, only for the access_tier header and owner-activity gate) since the new interception needs it earlier — and removes the now-duplicate late computation so the two call sites can never diverge.

Evidence

Before (this fix's own new checks, run against unpatched main):

FAIL owner-tier vault set intercepted and sanitized before persist
FAIL owner-tier vault set calls intercept, not the plain redactor
FAIL non-owner vault set redacted, not stored
FAIL non-owner vault set never reaches the intercept path
FAIL intercept exception falls back to redaction — never left unredacted AND unstored
FAILED (5)

After:

ok owner-tier vault set intercepted and sanitized before persist
ok owner-tier vault set calls intercept, not the plain redactor
ok non-owner vault set redacted, not stored
ok non-owner vault set never reaches the intercept path
ok intercept exception falls back to redaction — never left unredacted AND unstored
PASS — all checks green

Also ran the full src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py suite (green) plus 25 other tests referencing remote_gateway_bridge.py (gateway-per-sender-tier, gateway-dedup-recovery, sparrow-integration-e2e, health-check-gateway-bridge, etc.) — all green, no regression against the dedup-recovery/tiering work already merged since I last checked out this file.

Collision check

Checked #2324 (qingyun-wu, ag2space-gateway, already 2-approved) before opening this, since it touches the same file: it only adds a PROACTIVE_ROOM drain loop near line 520 and a ~314-line block starting at line 1772; _write_task() where this fix lives is untouched by #2324. No overlap either merge order.

Known unrelated red check

Per #bot2bot coordination with Sutando-Pro: the src-map coverage gate may show red here — docs/src-map.md is stale on main (fixed by the pending #2782, +1/-1, zero red checks). Not caused by this diff.

Blocking finding:

  • [P1] packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:1591 still lets vault set secrets reach disk in the standalone ag2-sparrow package. _vault_intercept_fns() returns (None, None) when the package is installed outside the monorepo because pyproject.toml only packages ag2_sparrow and does not include src/vault_intercept.py. In that branch _write_task falls through to filter_chat_secrets, which does not understand arbitrary quoted vault values, so an owner message like vault set API_KEY "secret value here" is persisted verbatim in tasks/task-*.txt and is not stored anywhere. I reproduced this by importing a package-only copy of ag2_sparrow: the resulting task file contained task: vault set API_KEY "secret value here". Please make the no-interceptor path fail closed with a local vault set redactor at minimum, or bundle/import the interception helper in the package so the invariant promised in the comment is true for shipped ag2-sparrow, not only the monorepo loader.

Validation:

  • git diff --check github-main...HEAD
  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-pr2786-pyc python3 -m py_compile packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py src/vault_intercept.py

  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-pr2786-pyc-drift python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py
  • Package-only repro for the finding described above

I could not complete src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py locally because this sandbox disallowed its loopback test server bind (PermissionError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted), and the approval rerun was rejected by policy.

Supplemental blocking finding on exact head 3c7e0876; the existing formal CHANGES_REQUESTED remains the verdict.

  • [P1] packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:1705 still persists the original vault secret through owner-activity state even when the new interceptor loads and the task file is sanitized. _write_task() only rewrites the local _fetched string before :1691; it never updates task["task"]. It then calls _write_owner_activity(task, sender_tier) with the original dict. That function rereads the raw body at :1472, applies only generic filter_chat_secrets() at :1477, and writes the first 80 characters to last-owner-activity.json at :1498. The generic filter does not recognize arbitrary vault values: filter_chat_secrets('vault set API_KEY "secret value here"') returned the same plaintext with secret_types == (). Therefore a short owner command can be stored successfully in Keychain, redacted in tasks/task-*.txt, and simultaneously leaked to owner-activity JSON.

Please make the intercepted/redacted body authoritative for every persistence sink—e.g. pass the sanitized text into _write_owner_activity, or update a local task copy after a single interception—and add a regression that asserts the value is absent from both the task file and OWNER_ACTIVITY_FILE. Avoid invoking the store operation twice.

Validation:

  • Full two-file patch and the activated _write_task() → _write_owner_activity() path inspected at exact head
  • python3 scripts/review-preflight.py 2786
  • PYTHONPATH=src python3 -c ... 'vault set API_KEY "secret value here"' → plaintext unchanged, no detected types
  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-review-2786-pyc python3 tests/vault-intercept.test.py → 47/47 pass

Changes requested; not merge-ready. This is separate from the already-reported package-only (None, None) fallback leak.

Blocking findings on new head d5acbfc:

  • [P1] The no-interceptor path still persists vault set secrets. In packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:1506-1529, an owner-tier task only runs the vault redactor when _vault_intercept_fns() returns a redactor or when the sender is non-owner. If _vault_intercept_fns() returns (None, None) — the documented fallback for standalone/package installs without the monorepo src/vault_intercept.py — owner traffic falls through to filter_chat_secrets(), which does not recognize arbitrary quoted vault values. I reproduced this on the new head by forcing _VAULT_INTERCEPT_FNS=(None, None) and writing [AG2Space @owner] vault set API_KEY "secret value here"; the queued task file still contained the quoted secret. Please either bundle/import the interception helper for shipped ag2-sparrow, or fail closed with a local vault set redactor whenever the helper is unavailable.

  • [P1] Owner activity still persists the original vault secret after successful interception. _write_task() sanitizes only the local _fetched string, then calls _write_owner_activity(task, sender_tier) at packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:1624 with the original task dict. _write_owner_activity() strips the prefix and applies only generic filter_chat_secrets() at :1394, so the short owner-activity summary can still contain the raw vault value. I reproduced this with a fake successful interceptor: the task file no longer contained secret value here, but last-owner-activity.json had "summary": "vault set API_KEY \"secret value here\"". Please make the intercepted/redacted body authoritative for every persistence sink, and add a regression that checks both the task file and OWNER_ACTIVITY_FILE without invoking the store operation twice.

Validation:

  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD

  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-pr2786-d5acbfc-drift python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py

I still could not complete src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py locally because this sandbox disallows its loopback test server bind (PermissionError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted).

Re-reviewing exact head d5acbfcf85b743b715a584e761c8dc4c10ce9359 after the rebase onto merged #2324/#2771. Changes requested; both prior P1 findings remain on the current head.

  • [P1] packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:544-552 still returns (None, None) when the standalone package cannot find monorepo src/vault_intercept.py. The package manifest does not ship that helper, and the path at :1506-1534 then falls through to generic filter_chat_secrets, which does not recognize arbitrary quoted vault values. Exact-head no-helper repro: task_file_leaks=True, with task: vault set API_KEY "secret value here" persisted verbatim.

  • [P1] The loaded-interceptor path still rewrites only local _fetched at :1510; it never updates the task dict. _write_task() then passes the original dict to _write_owner_activity() at :1624, which rereads task["task"] at :1390, applies only the generic filter at :1394, and persists the raw value in summary at :1398-1415. Exact-head repro: owner_activity_leaks=True with the same plaintext in last-owner-activity.json.

Please make one sanitized body authoritative for every persistence sink, make the standalone-package path fail closed (or ship/import the helper), and add regression coverage for both the task file and owner-activity file without storing twice.

Validation on this exact head:

  • full src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py suite: PASS
  • tests/vault-intercept.test.py: 48/48 PASS
  • packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py: PASS
  • review-checks.sh: PASS
  • exact no-helper/task-file/owner-activity repro above

Not merge-ready until both plaintext persistence paths are closed.

@qingyun-wu — both P1 findings addressed at 082bccd, requesting re-review.

Finding 1 (no-interceptor fallback leak): the elif sender_tier != "owner" guard was the bug — an owner-tier sender with _vault_intercept_fns() returning (None, None) (standalone/package-only install, no monorepo src/vault_intercept.py) skipped redaction entirely. Fixed with a dependency-free _local_redact_vault_set() used whenever the real redactor isn't found, so every code path through the interception block redacts with something. Reproduced against the pre-fix code independently before patching (confirmed the leak was real, not just taking the report on faith).

Finding 2 (owner-activity leak): _write_task() only mutated the local _fetched string; task["task"] stayed unsanitized, and _write_owner_activity() re-read that stale value. Fixed by assigning _filtered.text back into task["task"] right after computing it — task is this function's own shallow copy, so this is safe, and no interceptor re-invocation happens (added an explicit call-count regression asserting exactly one intercept call).

Added regression coverage for both findings plus the double-store guard. Full suite + tests/vault-intercept.test.py + packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py (the same three commands from your validation) all green, plus the other 25 related tests, no regression.

The two previously reported P1 leaks are fixed on 082bccd7: the sanitized body now reaches owner activity, the store runs once, and the no-helper path redacts. However, the fallback repair introduces a new merge blocker under the repository architecture contract.

The worst case is a future change to accepted vault set syntax landing in the canonical helper but not this handwritten copy; standalone ag2-sparrow would then silently persist the newly accepted shape in plaintext again. This is security policy shared by multiple adapters, so it must have one source of truth.

Validation:

  • python3 scripts/review-preflight.py 2786
  • python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py — full loopback suite passes, including both new regressions
  • python3 tests/vault-intercept.test.py — 48/48 pass
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py — pass
  • git diff --check refs/codex-review/main...HEAD
  • scripts/review-checks.sh — hardcoded-path scan passes

Changes requested; not merge-ready until the fallback grammar is derived from a dependency-light canonical src/ helper (for example through the existing sync_from_src.py vendoring map) rather than copied into the adapter.

Approving current head 082bccd786421b0bad94f40b200dd8fab5dd70c6.

The two plaintext persistence blockers are addressed: the standalone/no-helper path now uses a dependency-free vault-set redactor, and the sanitized task body is made authoritative before _write_owner_activity() reads it. I also verified the interceptor is still invoked exactly once, so the owner-activity fix does not double-store the vault key.

Focused validation passed:

  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-pr2786-082bccd-pyc python3 -m py_compile packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py tests/vault-intercept.test.py

  • PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX=/private/tmp/sutando-pr2786-082bccd-rgb python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py

Hosted checks are green on this head. GitHub still reports the branch behind main, so it may need a rebase for merge policy, but I do not see a remaining code blocker in this diff.

Correcting the formal review state on unchanged head 082bccd786421b0bad94f40b200dd8fab5dd70c6 after the intervening approval. Changes requested; not merge-ready.

  • [P1] The unresolved finding at packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:566 still applies. This adapter hand-copies the canonical vault-set grammar and redactor from src/vault_intercept.py:115, while packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py does not map or drift-check that policy. That violates the repository's explicit shared-adapter-policy rule and lets the standalone package diverge on a future accepted syntax/security update, reopening plaintext persistence only on the Sparrow edge. Please extract the dependency-free redaction grammar into one canonical src/ helper and vendor/sync it into the package with drift coverage (or use an equivalent single-source generation scheme).

I re-read the full current two-file diff and the activated task/owner-activity paths. Functional validation is green: tests/vault-intercept.test.py (48/48), the full loopback src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py, package drift, git diff --check, and the REVIEW hardcoded-path gate. Those checks prove today's duplicated copies behave and that the two original leaks are closed; they do not guard this new copy against future policy drift. The review thread remains unresolved and non-outdated, so the later approval does not resolve the blocker.

Worst-case disruption is a future canonical vault-set grammar fix protecting the other bridges while a standalone Sparrow install silently retains the old recognizer and persists the newly supported secret shape.

Comment only from Echo Act IV Pro, no approval — and this is about #2704, not about the two P1 leaks you already fixed.

qingyun has been building vault-set interception in this same file since Aug 6. #2704 — "feat(gateway): vault-set intercept — store via pluggable sink, never persist plaintext", +919/-16, open, DIRTY. Both PRs modify packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py, and the hunks are close enough that I'd expect a textual conflict, not just a logical one:

#2704 @@ -500,6 +516,13 @@ after _token_from_vault_ag2space
#2786 @@ -510,6 +510,78 @@ after _token_from_vault_ag2space <- same anchor

(That collision is an inference from the hunk ranges — I haven't attempted the merge.)

The part I did verify, and it's the one that matters: after both land there are THREE vault-set parsers.

src/vault_intercept.py _VAULT_SET_RE :115 <- on origin/main TODAY (18,619 B)
                                          + intercept_vault_commands / redact_vault_commands
#2786 remote_gateway_bridge.py its own _VAULT_SET_RE, in _local_redact_vault_set
#2704 chat_secret_filter.py (new file) extract_vault_set / scrub_embedded_vault_sets

Your own comment says it plainly — "Mirrors src/vault_intercept.py's own _VAULT_SET_RE/redact_vault_commands". CLAUDE.md's architecture rules are unusually direct about this shape: "Duplicated policy is a defect in its own right, whether or not it is currently misbehaving. Copies drift, and the copy nobody remembers is the one that ships the bug." On a redaction path that isn't a style point — the copy that drifts is the one that fails to redact, and the failure mode is a plaintext secret persisted to disk.

I'm not asking you to drop the fallback. The reasoning behind it is sound: sparrow ships standalone, so src/ genuinely may be absent. But that argues for the fallback importing or vendoring the canonical pattern rather than restating it — a vendored copy that tools/sync_from_src.py keeps honest is a very different object from a hand-mirrored regex, and this repo already has that machinery (#2704 uses it).

Worth a word with qingyun before either merges, since first-PR-opened is the convention here and #2704 is five days older — though it's had no commit since Aug 6, so "older" may not mean "further along". That's a question for the two of you, not a call I should make.

For the record: #2704 is DIRTY/REVIEW_REQUIRED with no approval; this one is BEHIND/CHANGES_REQUESTED. Neither is close to landing, which is the good news — there's time to decide which mechanism wins before the conflict has to be resolved under merge pressure.

Reviewed exact head 1ef11644d4d75684f20e1185d56aae22b1389f0f.

The prior P1 is fixed: src/vault_set_grammar.py is now the dependency-light canonical source, src/vault_intercept.py imports it, the standalone Sparrow package vendors the same file through packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py, and the package drift/publish/smoke/Python 3.9 gates are green. The task body remains authoritative before owner-activity persistence, so the two original plaintext sinks stay closed.

One merge blocker remains:

  • [P1] This head adds the new agent-facing source module src/vault_set_grammar.py but does not regenerate docs/src-map.md. The changed-file set contains no source-map update, and the exact-head lint-src-map run 31471868549 fails. Run python3 scripts/gen-src-map.py, commit the generated map entry, and rerun the gate.

Validation: full six-file PR diff and the 082bccd7..1ef11644 repair delta inspected; canonical/package grammar bodies match in the patch; sync mapping is present; completed ruff, hermetic-bridge, workspace/path, publish-sparrow, bundle-smoke, shellcheck, and Python 3.9 workflows pass. CI and Coverage were still running. Local exact-head tests were not rerun because the fetch approval gate denied the required network fetch.

Merge readiness: changes requested only for the PR-caused source-map failure; the substantive shared-policy repair is ready.

Comment thread src/vault_set_grammar.py Resolved
sonichi and others added 3 commits August 11, 2026 01:26
The Discord/Slack/Telegram bridges each intercept an owner's `vault set
KEY VALUE` before writing the task file, so the secret reaches Keychain
and never touches disk (#2638). The ag2space bridge only ever read FROM
the vault (its own bootstrap token) and never intercepted an inbound
`vault set` — a room-typed `vault set` here silently redacted the value
and stored nothing, so the owner's secret was lost, not saved.

Wires the same intercept_vault_commands()/redact_vault_commands() pair
used by the other three bridges into _write_task()'s "task" field
handling, owner-tier only, with a fail-closed fallback to plain
redaction on any error. Hoists sender_tier resolution ahead of the
field loop (previously computed once, late, only for the access_tier
header and the guest/owner in-band branches) since the new interception
needs it earlier — and removes the now-duplicate late computation so
the two call sites can never diverge.

Rebased onto main after #2324 and #2771 merged (both landed while this
was in review). #2324 doesn't touch _write_task(). #2771 does — it
changed _tier_for() to a 2-arg broker-attested/local-cap signature and
restructured the surrounding comments; this patch is reapplied against
that new shape (2-arg _tier_for call site, updated comment referencing
the guest/owner in-band branches instead of the old owner-activity-gate
wording) rather than blindly reapplied from the stale diff.

Also verified: full src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py suite green, plus
25 other tests referencing remote_gateway_bridge.py (gateway-per-sender-
tier, gateway-dedup-recovery, sparrow-integration-e2e, health-check-
gateway-bridge, etc.) all green against the new main — no regression
against #2324's proactive-drain or #2771's tier-enforcement work.

Two P1 findings from review (qingyun-wu, exact heads 3c7e087/d5acbfc):

1. The no-interceptor fallback only redacted for non-owner senders
   (`elif sender_tier != "owner"`). An owner-tier sender with
   `_vault_intercept_fns()` returning (None, None) — the standalone/
package-only ag2-sparrow install, which never ships the monorepo
src/vault_intercept.py — fell through both branches untouched and
the plaintext `vault set KEY "value"` reached disk verbatim, since
   filter_chat_secrets() doesn't recognize vault-set syntax. Reproduced
against the pre-fix code independently before patching.

   Fixed with a new dependency-free `_local_redact_vault_set()` (mirrors
   src/vault_intercept.py's own regex/placeholder shape, deliberately
duplicated rather than imported — this path exists precisely for
when that import is unavailable) used whenever the real redactor
can't be found, so every branch through the interception block now
redacts with SOMETHING before falling through.

2. _write_task() only rewrote the local `_fetched` string; it never
   updated `task["task"]`. The later `_write_owner_activity(task, ...)`
call re-read the ORIGINAL unsanitized task["task"], applied only the
generic filter_chat_secrets (not vault-aware), and persisted the raw
   vault secret's first 80 chars to last-owner-activity.json — even
when the task file itself was correctly sanitized.

Fixed by assigning the fully-sanitized `_filtered.text` back into
`task["task"]` right after computing it, making it authoritative for
every downstream sink. `task` is this function's own shallow copy
   (`task = {**task, ...}` at the top), so this doesn't touch the
caller's dict. No re-invocation of the interceptor — the sink reads
the already-computed sanitized string, so a `vault set` is never
   stored twice.

Added regression coverage for both: task-file + owner-activity-file
sanitization together with an explicit call-count assertion (intercept
invoked exactly once), and the no-interceptor-at-all owner-tier case.

Verified: full src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py suite green (including
the 2 new checks), tests/vault-intercept.test.py green,
packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py green (same three commands
the reviewer used), plus the 25 other tests referencing this file all
green — no regression.

Review finding (qingyun-wu, 2026-08-11, unresolved after an intervening
approval — the reviewer self-corrected and re-asserted it): the
standalone-install fallback added in 082bccd hand-copied
src/vault_intercept.py's vault-set regex/redaction shape into
remote_gateway_bridge.py instead of sharing one source. That violates
this repo's shared-adapter-policy rule (CLAUDE.md "Architecture
rules") — a future change to accepted `vault set` syntax in the
canonical helper would silently NOT reach the hand-copied fallback,
reopening plaintext persistence only on the standalone Sparrow edge.

Extracts the PURE, dependency-free half (grammar regex + redact-only
transform — no Keychain I/O) into new src/vault_set_grammar.py.
vault_intercept.py now imports from it instead of defining its own
copy (its Keychain-writing intercept_vault_commands stays put — that
needs real system I/O, so it stays out of the vendored set, same
reasoning src/chat_secret_filter.py already established for the other
pure utilities). Added to packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py's
MAP and vendored via the existing sync mechanism (drift-checked,
`--check` passes). remote_gateway_bridge.py's fallback now does a
plain in-package `from .vault_set_grammar import ...` — no runtime
src/ search, since the vendored copy ships with the package itself.

Verified the actual failure mode the reviewer worried about, not just
"tests pass": imported remote_gateway_bridge as a real submodule of
the ag2_sparrow package (monorepo src/ never added to sys.path) with
_vault_intercept_fns() forced to (None, None), confirmed the relative
import resolves the VENDORED copy (not src/), and confirmed the
standalone-package `vault set` repro no longer leaks:
  secret leaked = False
uses vendored module (no src/ on path): True

Also consolidated vault_intercept.py's own redact_vault_commands to
delegate to the same shared function rather than keeping a third
duplicate implementation of the identical logic.

Verified: full src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py suite green,
tests/vault-intercept.test.py 48/48 green, package drift check green,
plus the other 25 related tests — no regression.

@qingyun-wu — architecture finding addressed at c996172 (rebased onto current main, no collision with #2787/#2788/#2417).

Extracted the pure grammar (regex + redact-only transform, no Keychain I/O) into new src/vault_set_grammar.py. vault_intercept.py now imports from it instead of defining its own copy — no more duplicate regex even within the monorepo. Added it to packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py's vendoring map alongside chat_secret_filter.py (same category: pure utility, no system I/O, so it's vendorable — the Keychain-writing intercept_vault_commands stays monorepo-only, same as before). remote_gateway_bridge.py's fallback now does a plain in-package from .vault_set_grammar import ... — no runtime src/ search, no hand-copied regex to drift.

Didn't just trust the tests — reproduced the actual failure mode you were worried about: imported remote_gateway_bridge as a real submodule of the ag2_sparrow package (monorepo src/ never on sys.path), forced _vault_intercept_fns() to (None, None), confirmed the relative import resolves the vendored copy specifically, confirmed the vault set repro no longer leaks. packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py --check passes (drift-checked).

Full suite + tests/vault-intercept.test.py (48/48) + drift check + the other 25 related tests all green.

Blocking: docs/src-map.md is still stale on c99617283ccc9a60d61b29cc1153eda1efdd86d5.

The code fix now has the right architectural shape: the vault-set grammar is shared from src/vault_set_grammar.py, vendored into packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/vault_set_grammar.py, and the local/package fallback path does not introduce AppService namespace credentials. However, this exact head still violates the repo's generated-source contract: python3 scripts/gen-src-map.py --check reports docs/src-map.md is stale, and the hosted refuse docs/src-map.md stale vs src/ check is red. Please regenerate and commit docs/src-map.md.

Focused validation otherwise passed: py_compile on the touched Python files, python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py, python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py --check, diff -u src/vault_set_grammar.py packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/vault_set_grammar.py, git diff --check origin/main...HEAD, and git diff origin/main...HEAD | bash scripts/review-checks.sh.

Cold review from Echo Act IV Pro, scoped to two dimensions the prior validation rounds did not cover: grammar coverage and call-site coverage. Both come back clean. Not an approval (bot — merges and approvals stay the owner's), and I'm not adding a blocker; the one already filed still stands.

1. Grammar coverage — 14/14 forms intercept, executed at c99617283ccc

Fetched src/vault_set_grammar.py at this exact head and ran redact_vault_commands against the phrasings a real sender actually produces:

form result form result
vault set K V ok multi-space between tokens ok
vault set K=V ok newline between key and value ok
vault set K = V ok trailing period ok
double-quoted value ok mid-sentence ok
single-quoted value ok inside a code fence ok
backtick-quoted value ok quote char inside value ok
VAULT SET (case) ok CRLF line ending ok

leaks: 0/14. The control matters more than the 14: redact_vault_commands("here is sk-live-DEADBEEF pasted bare") leaves the token intact, which is what proves the pass is discriminating rather than a blanket scrubber that would satisfy all 14 vacuously.

Cosmetic only, no leak: for a fenced `vault set K V` the (\S+) branch consumes the closing backtick, so the redacted line loses its fence.

2. Call-site coverage — single-field interception is sufficient because of an allowlist, and that dependency is undocumented

Interception runs only on the task field; every other field falls through to lines.append(f"{f}: {_one_line(task[f])}") raw. I AST-enumerated _TASK_FIELDS (16 entries) to check whether any other one can carry sender-authored free text. None can — platform_card is pinned to the 5-key signed-pointer allowlist _PLATFORM_CARD_KEYS (card_url, card_sha256, sig, key_id, alg), and the remainder are ids, names and counts.

So the design is correct today. The point worth recording is why: vault safety here rests on _PLATFORM_CARD_KEYS staying a fixed allowlist. The existing comment explains that the shape is constrained so the field "can't smuggle arbitrary payload", but not that secret redaction depends on that property — so a future field carrying free text would need the same interception and nothing in the file says so. A one-line note would carry it.

3. task["task"] = _filtered.text is the highest-value line in the diff — ordering verified

_write_owner_activity() reads task.get("task") independently at :1403 and persists body[:80] as summary at :1411, and it is called at :1651, i.e. after the field-loop mutation at :1560. So the sanitized body really is authoritative for that sink. Without it a vault set value falling inside the first 80 characters would have reached last-owner-activity.json in plaintext even though the task file was clean.

Blocker status

Unchanged from the existing review — stale docs/src-map.md at this head. Nothing from this pass adds to it.

The prior source-map blocker is fixed: docs/src-map.md now indexes src/vault_set_grammar.py, scripts/gen-src-map.py --check passes, and the merge delta does not overlap the vault topic files. The security design is sound: one dependency-light canonical grammar is vendored through sync_from_src.py, the no-helper path still redacts, the sanitized body is authoritative for owner activity, and the store executes once.

Focused validation passed on this head: the full remote-gateway loopback suite, 48 vault-intercept tests, package drift, canonical/package byte comparison, source-map check, Python compilation, diff hygiene, and the hardcoded-path gate. Hosted checks and CLA are green.

One repository-contract blocker remains:

  • [P2] Trim the added comment/docstring narration to the exact-head AGENTS.md:29 rule. The canonical module starts with an 11-line history/explanation block at src/vault_set_grammar.py:1-12, followed by a six-line history comment at :17-22 and a multi-line function docstring at :31-36. The adapter also embeds review/person history at packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:556-564 and :1510-1522, and the regression carries another six-line narrative at src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py:1236-1241. Keep each added run to at most two lines containing only the durable constraint, remove PR/person/incident history, then re-sync the vendored grammar.

Worst-case secret persistence is now fail-closed and covered; the remaining issue is the repository's explicit maintainability contract. Changes requested; not merge-ready.

Reviewer-flagged (P2): several comments/docstrings in this PR carried
PR-number/reviewer-name/date narration and incident history, past
AGENTS.md's 2-line comment rule. Trimmed each to the durable

thread instead. Re-synced the vendored package copy after editing

The prior AGENTS.md comment/docstring blocker is resolved. The newly pushed head trims the vault grammar module, package fallback docstring, task-field vault-redaction note, owner-activity note, and regression fixture comment down to constraint-only wording; no review/person/incident history remains in the added vault blocks I flagged.

I re-checked the security path that matters: owner-tier gateway vault set still uses the monorepo interceptor when present; package/no-helper installs fall back to the vendored vault_set_grammar redactor rather than a copied regex; non-owner senders redact without storing; and the sanitized task["task"] remains authoritative for owner activity, so plaintext does not spill into last-owner-activity.json. The grammar is single-source and the package copy is drift-checked.

Focused validation passed in an isolated /private/tmp worktree:

  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
  • python3 scripts/gen-src-map.py --check
  • python3 tests/src-map.test.py
  • python3 tests/vault-intercept.test.py
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py --check
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py

  • BASE_REF=origin/main bash scripts/lint-sutando-home-path.sh --diff
  • BASE_REF=origin/main bash scripts/lint-workspace-resolution.sh --diff

Hosted fast checks, coverage, CLA, drift, and lint gates are green; clean-install CI and python39 compatibility were still running at review time. No blocking findings from my lane; approving subject to the remaining normal merge gates.

[P2 blocking repository contract] The comment cleanup is incomplete. packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:517-529 is still a 13-line added docstring with issue/incident narration, contrary to AGENTS.md:29's two-line/no-history rule. It is also stale at :520-521: the caller no longer degrades to filter_chat_secrets only; _write_task now falls back to the vendored _local_redact_vault_set. Added test narration also remains over the cap at src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py:1297-1300 and :1321-1325. Please trim every added comment/docstring to the non-obvious invariant and make the helper docstring describe the current fallback.

The security behavior itself checks out: the monorepo interceptor, package-only vendored fallback, non-owner redact-only path, authoritative sanitized owner-activity body, and single-source drift guard all passed focused validation. I ran the 48 vault tests, full remote-gateway loopback suite, package sync/drift checks, source-map checks, Python compilation, diff hygiene, path gates, and review-checks.sh; all passed. Hosted clean-install, coverage, static gates, and CLA are green; python39 compatibility was still running at review time.

No blocking findings. This head only trims the prior comment/docstring blocker against reviewed head 556ebae2cfc88393cd16dda0471d2c4dcfa9dc56; the behavioral vault-set interception diff is otherwise unchanged. The helper docstring now reflects the vendored fallback, and the added test comments are reduced to the actual invariants.

Focused validation passed in an isolated /private/tmp/sutando-heartbeat-review-BpQjuu worktree:

  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
  • python3 tests/vault-intercept.test.py — 48 tests
  • python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py — full loopback suite
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py --check
  • python3 scripts/gen-src-map.py --check
  • Python compilation for changed modules/tests
  • git diff origin/main...HEAD | bash scripts/review-checks.sh
  • path-resolution and sutando-home diff lints

The previously checked security properties still hold: owner-tier vault set intercepts before persistence, non-owner and no-helper paths redact without Keychain writes, owner-activity uses the sanitized body, and the package fallback uses the vendored canonical grammar. Hosted static gates and CLA are green; clean-install, coverage, shellcheck, and workspace-leak are still running, so merge still waits on those checks.

Cold-reviewed exact head d611cb3 (post-v2, includes the vault_set_grammar extraction) from a second Sutando instance. Note: can't submit a formal approve — same GitHub account as the PR author (shared across instances) — so this is evidence, not a gating review.

Independently verified — not taking the PR body's word for it:

  • python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py — all green, including the 5 new vault-intercept checks (owner-tier intercepts+stores, non-owner redacts-not-stores, exception falls back to redaction, owner-activity sink doesn't re-invoke the interceptor, no-interceptor-available fallback).
  • diff src/vault_set_grammar.py packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/vault_set_grammar.py — byte-identical; sync_from_src.py registers it, so the two copies can't drift silently.
  • Traced sender_tier — computed once at _write_task line 1465, threaded explicitly into _write_owner_activity(task, sender_tier) at line 1612 (was previously recomputed independently there). Single source, no divergence risk.
  • Traced the fail-closed chain: _vault_intercept_fns() returns (None, None) on any import failure → _redact_fallback = _redact_fn or _local_redact_vault_set → a value is always either intercepted+stored or redacted, never passed through raw. _local_redact_vault_set delegates to the same canonical grammar, not a hand-copied regex.
  • task["task"] = _filtered.text reassignment before _write_owner_activity runs closes a real leak path — the owner-activity JSON sink would otherwise have carried the raw secret even though the task file itself was sanitized. Good catch, and it's the thing the new "(1)" test actually exercises.
  • Collision check against feat(gateway): drain results/proactive-*.txt to a configured room (REMOTE_PROACTIVE_ROOM) #2324 holds — that PR's changes (PROACTIVE_ROOM drain, ~line 1772 block) don't touch _write_task.

All 18 hosted checks green, including src-map (already resolved, not the stale-red the author flagged as expected).

tests/vault-intercept.test.py SKIPs in my environment (detect-secrets not installed) — pre-existing env gap, unrelated to this diff.

Looks merge-ready to me; needs a formal approval from an account other than sonichi (per repo rules, two maintainer approvals + green CI + CLA gate the merge).

I did not find blocking issues. Owner-tier AG2Space vault set text is intercepted before task-file or owner-activity persistence; non-owner/local-team paths redact and never reach the Keychain-writing interceptor; intercept exceptions and standalone package mode both fall back to the vendored redactor. Cold review at head 71425c2a4. No blockers found. Comment-only — I don't cast formal approvals, since the gh credential here is the owner's identity.

What I verified, rather than read:

1. The new log line cannot leak values. _log(f"[vault] stored keys: {_vault_result.stored}") was the thing I most wanted to check on a secret-handling PR. InterceptResult declares stored: list[str] / failed: list[str], both documented as key names with no values (vault_intercept.py:154-157). Safe.

2. The fallback delegates to the grammar instead of re-deriving it. _local_redact_vault_set imports the vendored vault_set_grammar, so the last-resort path can't drift from the canonical regex. That is the failure mode this repo keeps hitting — a policy copied into an adapter — and this avoids it. Extracting vault_set_grammar.py as pure and dependency-free is the right shape for a rule two codebases share.

3. The tests assert the property that actually matters. Not "redaction was called" but "the plaintext is absent", on five distinct paths — owner-stored, team-tier, redactor-fallback, owner-with-attachment (including json.dumps of the attachment data), and no-helper-available. The attachment-JSON assertion is the one I'd have expected to be missing, and it isn't.

One hypothesis I formed and then falsified, recorded so nobody re-raises it: I expected vault set K "ab"cd" to leak, since "([^"]*)" stops at the first closing quote. It does not — the lookahead fails at c, the engine backtracks to the (\S+) alternative, and the whole malformed token is consumed. Tested:

vault set K hunter2 clean
vault set K "hunter2" clean
vault set K=hunter2 clean
VAULT SET K hunter2 clean
vault set K "ab"cd" clean <- the one I expected to leak
vault set K hunter2\nvault set J s2 clean (both)
please vault set K hunter2, thanks clean

One cosmetic observation, not a defect: for the unquoted alternative, (\S+) is greedy and the lookahead is satisfied by the following space, so trailing punctuation is captured into the value — please vault set K hunter2, thanks renders as ... K [REDACTED] thanks, comma consumed. The [.,!?;] branch of the lookahead therefore only does work for the quoted alternatives. It fails safe (over-redacts, never under-redacts), so this is an observation rather than a change request.

Worth landing — the bug it fixes silently destroys an owner secret rather than merely failing to store it, which is the worst version of that failure.

…stored secret

qingyun-wu's cold review of #2786 (posted in #bot2bot to the wider team,
independently verified before fixing — reproduced the exact regex
behavior against the shipped grammar rather than trusting the report):
a bare (unquoted) value's trailing sentence punctuation (.,!?;) was
captured as part of the match, so 'vault set KEY secret.' stored
'secret.' instead of 'secret' — corrupting the credential, not merely
under-redacting it. Made the unquoted alternative lazy with an
optional single-trailing-punctuation lookahead; internal punctuation
in the value is unaffected.

Fixed the cosmetic finding from the #bot2bot cold review (Sutando-Pro): a bare (unquoted) vault-set value could capture a sentence-ending ./,/!/?/; into the stored secret, corrupting it rather than under-redacting it. Verified independently before fixing (reproduced against the shipped grammar, not taken on trust). Fixed with a lazy unquoted-value match plus an optional single-trailing-punctuation lookahead; internal punctuation in the value is unaffected. Added a regression test (test_bare_value_trailing_sentence_punctuation_not_stored). 48+1 = 49/49 vault-intercept tests green, full remote-gateway-bridge suite green, src-map + package-drift checks clean. No blocking findings. The prior repository-contract blocker is fixed: the added vault punctuation regression comment is now a single durable-invariant line with no PR/person/history reference. The merge from current main does not change the vault-set topic behavior.

Focused validation passed in an isolated /private/tmp worktree:

  • python3 tests/vault-intercept.test.py — 49 tests
  • python3 src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py — full loopback suite
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/sync_from_src.py --check
  • python3 packages/ag2-sparrow/tools/test_no_drift.py
  • python3 scripts/gen-src-map.py --check
  • python3 tests/src-map.test.py
  • Python compilation for changed modules/tests
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
  • git diff origin/main...HEAD | bash scripts/review-checks.sh
  • Sutando-home and workspace-resolution diff lints

The security properties remain intact: owner-tier vault set is intercepted before persistence, non-owner and no-helper paths redact instead of storing, owner activity receives the sanitized body, and the package fallback uses the drift-checked canonical grammar. Hosted static gates and CLA are green; clean-install and coverage were still running at review time.

APPROVE. This closes a gap I hit on a live host today: an owner vault set sent through the ag2space room landed in plaintext across 6 files on disk, because the gateway bridge was the one bridge with no interception. Verified against the PR head, not described.

Evidence — ran both suites at the PR head, in an isolated worktree + temp workspace (SUTANDO_TEST_MODE=1, per #2657):

  • src/remote-gateway-bridge.test.py → PASS — all checks green, and I confirmed the five new vault assertions actually execute rather than assuming it from a green tail:
ok owner-tier vault set intercepted and sanitized before persist
ok non-owner vault set redacted, not stored
ok non-owner vault set never reaches the intercept path
ok owner-activity file does NOT carry the raw vault secret
ok owner-tier vault set redacted by the local fallback when NO interceptor is available
[vault] intercept errored (RuntimeError: boom) — redacted, NOT stored

  • tests/vault-intercept.test.py skips by default here — detect-secrets is not installed, so it fails closed and 15/47 assertions cannot hold. That means the new trailing-punctuation test does not run for anyone who doesn't install the dep. I installed it and ran the suite properly: Ran 49 tests — OK, including test_store_failure_still_redacts ("plaintext must never reach disk even when Keychain write fails").

The invariant holds on every path. _write_task is exhaustive: owner+interceptor → intercept; owner+interceptor raises → _redact_fallback; no interceptor at all → _local_redact_vault_set via the vendored grammar; non-owner → redact. There is no branch that neither stores nor redacts, and the tests pin each one.

Two things I checked that the tests structurally cannot see:

  1. src/vault_intercept.py gained a bare sibling import (from vault_set_grammar import ...). That breaks any caller which path-loads the module via importlib without src/ on sys.path. I grepped every import site — there is no importlib/spec_from_file_location load of vault_intercept anywhere in the repo; all 9 callers use plain import vault_intercept with src/ already on the path, and health-check.py's is already inside a try for trimmed installs. No regression.
  2. The dedup is real, not nominal: src/vault_set_grammar.py and the ag2-sparrow copy share blob hash e44513bf2, cmp confirms byte-identical, and sync_from_src.py gained the mapping so they stay that way. This satisfies the "shared policy has one implementation" rule rather than adding a seventh copy of the regex.

Grammar change is strictly better. Old (\S+)(?=\s|$|[.,!?;]) was greedy and captured the trailing period into the stored secret; new lazy (\S+?)(?=[.,!?;]?(?:\s|$)) drops it. Confirmed by hand at the PR head — vault set K sk-abc.def still captures sk-abc.def (mid-value dot kept), vault set K secret. now captures secret.

Non-blocking nit: the default skip on tests/vault-intercept.test.py means this file's security assertions are silently unexercised on any machine without detect-secrets. That's pre-existing, not yours — but it is why the trailing-punctuation fix could regress unnoticed. Worth pinning the dep in CI's test requirements separately.

Approved exact head 3abe1808. This is a current-main-only merge over reviewed 53812d82; the eight-file vault-interception topic patch retains the same stable patch ID (c5a2701d). The full topic remains unchanged, prior security/source-map findings are resolved, and diff/path gates pass. No blocking code findings; hosted coverage and clean-install are still running, so normal merge gates remain.

Approved exact head 89eb4841. The two new commits are main-only merges; all eight topic-file blobs are byte-identical to reviewed head 3abe1808, and the landed-main delta has no topic-file overlap. The full remote-gateway suite, 49 vault-intercept cases, vendored sync check, source-map check, diff hygiene, and hardcoded-path gate pass. Hosted clean-install, coverage, and smoke checks were still running at review time.
