Summary

Fixes #7857.

Manual Advisor consultation now works while the fetch-based web-search sidecar owns the turn. Previously webSearchSidecar activated wsPlan, which suppressed synthetic Advisor injection and made advisor.policy = "manual" unusable unless web search was disabled.

  • Adds a shared Advisor sidecar step for the existing three-consultation/four-continuation bounds, failure formatting and tool-result pairing.
  • Teaches the web-search scanner to consume advisor calls alongside web_search in worker order, including incomplete-call suppression and real-client-tool precedence.
  • Preserves Anthropic replay input, hidden worker usage and independent search/Advisor iteration allowances.
  • Propagates cancellation into the Advisor loopback and emits heartbeats while consultation is pending.
  • Leaves run-turn and image/video behavior unchanged and keeps consult-less registered plans on preflight-only behavior.
  • Updates the architecture and user-facing Advisor docs.

Verification

Validated final head 6f881da3b88246f1221a9d538d32ad35d845916e on Windows with Bun 1.4.4 and OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1. Ordinary merge of origin/dev at b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf; no rebase or force-push. The branch contains that dev tip (0 behind at validation).

Evidence scope: the runtime tests, typecheck and structure receipts below were run at bd5e05e738e71532598e8de2063aa895a3ac91cc. Runtime, tests, structure, dependencies and configuration are unchanged by this prose-only follow-up. Docs build, privacy scan and whitespace checks ran fresh at the final head. Runtime checks were not repeated on unchanged code.

  • bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/advisor/advisor-web-search.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-guard.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-continuation-limit.test.ts tests/web-search/web-search-rotation-usage-attribution.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000: 109 pass / 0 fail.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, bun run --cwd docs-site build and git diff --check origin/dev...HEAD: exit 0. Frozen dependency installation completed before validation.
  • New review follow-up: 6f881da removes the dangling English limitations reference. Fresh docs build: 593 pages / 85,235 internal links; privacy and whitespace checks pass. The earlier runtime receipt is retained with its exact source head above. Inherited non-blocking dev follow-up: incomplete web_search calls can still be forwarded by src/web-search/loop.ts.
  • Full-suite exception: this shared Windows host has concurrent carry lanes. Per the owner's instruction, only the listed focused regression files ran, with one Bun test process at a time. bun run test and unrestricted test:changed were not run; broader coverage remains with PR CI.
  • This refresh adds no runtime behavior fix. Earlier red-to-green results remain historical evidence in the linked maintainer carry/review comments; this lane did not rerun a pre-fix baseline. No failed checks were rerun and no workflows were dispatched or approved.
  • NOT RUN: full local suite, live providers, native-client/platform acceptance. Current-head hosted CI must finish successfully before an owner-authorized merge.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. Existing maintainer review is retained; this refresh makes no runtime security-boundary change.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Fetch-based web-search turns can now include manual Advisor consultations, with separate limits for search and consultations.
    • Advisor consultations support cancellation. Real client tool calls take precedence and return control to the client.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Worker-turn usage is accounted for once, including turns rejected at the Advisor continuation limit.
    • Incomplete Advisor calls are withheld from processing, preventing unintended consultations or searches.
  • Limitations
    • Advisor consultations remain unavailable in RunTurn and image/video sidecar turns.

Walkthrough

Fetch-based web-search turns can now support manual Advisor consultations alongside web-search calls. The loop keeps synthetic calls internal, applies Advisor-specific limits, and preserves client control when a real client tool call occurs.

Changes: Advisor and web-search integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared Advisor consultation handling
src/server/responses/advisor-slot.ts, src/server/responses/advisor-plan-slot.ts, src/advisor/runtime.ts
A reusable sidecar step tracks Advisor consultation and continuation limits. The Advisor plan accepts an optional consultation abort signal, which is combined with the runtime signal.
Advisor calls in the web-search loop
src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts, src/web-search/loop.ts
The web-search path adds the Advisor tool and sidecar step when the plan supports consultation and formatting. The loop scans and handles Advisor calls alongside search calls, replays results in worker order, and applies Advisor continuation limits. It emits heartbeats during consultations and updates tool declarations when consultations are exhausted.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(advisor): support manual consultations during web search" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe manual Advisor consultations running while the fetch-based web-search sidecar owns a turn. The title names the feature, the scope (web search), and the Conventional Commits type and scope. It does not name the secondary changes, such as the usage-counting fix or the documentation updates, but the task does not require that.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Requirement [#7857]: one routed turn must run manual advisor consultation with hosted web_search. The worker must receive advisor. Neither synthetic call may reach the client.

The head still contains the implementation assessed in the prior review:

  • src/web-search/loop.ts (head) imports ADVISOR_TOOL_NAME, MAX_ADVISOR_CONTINUATIONS_PER_REQUEST, parseAdvisorQuestionArgs and AdvisorSidecarStep. scanEventsForWebSearch(events, { advisor }) records complete advisor calls as kind: "advisor" and does not push them to passthrough. Incomplete advisor calls set hasMalformedToolCall and are withheld. Real client tools still set hasRealToolCall and pass through.
  • The prior review found the wiring in src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts adds the advisor tool next to buildWebSearchTool() when consult and formatUnavailable exist. It passes createAdvisorSidecarStep(...) to the web-search loop. The worker catalog therefore includes advisor.
  • The prior review found consultation, heartbeats (withHeartbeats, 1000 ms), 499 abort handling, advisor tool removal on exhaustion, Anthropic replay from original.input, and separate search and Advisor allowances present.

Change since prior review: 6f881da3b (head) follows bd5e05e738e71532598e8de2063aa895a3ac91cc. The author states this change is documentation-only and removes a dangling English limitations reference. The incremental diff could not be read, because the changed blobs are missing from the checkout. This assessment therefore relies on the author statement and on the head source checks above. The head source checks match the prior evidence. Runtime checks were not rerun here. The 109-pass focused run is author-reported and was not reproduced in this assessment.

Unmet coding requirements: none found in the available evidence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area connects to [#7857] or supports its implementation. No unrelated change was demonstrated.

  • src/server/responses/advisor-slot.ts: shared createAdvisorSidecarStep, AdvisorSidecarCall and exported parseAdvisorQuestionArgs. Both the normal Advisor path and the web-search sidecar use them.
  • src/advisor/runtime.ts and src/server/responses/advisor-plan-slot.ts: forward an optional abort signal and expose consult and formatUnavailable. These support sidecar cancellation and the consult-less check.
  • src/web-search/loop.ts, src/server/responses/sidecar-execution.ts: implement advisor scanning, heartbeats, hidden usage and wiring.
  • Tests in tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts and tests/advisor/advisor-web-search.test.ts, with layout registrations in scripts/test-layout/layout-responses.json and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json. These cover the new behavior.
  • Docs in structure/advisor.md, structure/data-planes/search.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md and docs-site/.../advisor.md. These describe the changed Advisor behavior.
  • The head change 6f881da3b is documentation-only per the author statement. Its diff could not be read. It is still an Advisor documentation edit and does not add unrelated runtime code.

Non-blocking, inherited: src/web-search/loop.ts can still forward incomplete web_search calls. The if (!advisor) guard preserves that existing web_search behavior. The PR description identifies it as a separate dev follow-up. It is not part of [#7857] and is not a failure of this check.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 7 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the exhausted Advisor tool for Anthropic requests.

The web-search sidecar adds the synthetic advisor tool to the worker catalog and intercepts later advisor calls. After the consultation limit, the Anthropic branch leaves that tool in allTools and keeps the active choice unchanged. An ordinary auto request can therefore call advisor again. Each call returns another bounded limit result and consumes a continuation until advisor_continuation_limit returns HTTP 502.

preserveAnthropicPrefix preserves the position of Anthropic message nudges. It does not require retaining an exhausted tool declaration. Anthropic replay separately reconstructs and validates historical tool names and IDs, so filtering the current catalog does not change replay identities.

src/web-search/loop.ts:949-953
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove exhausted Advisor from allowedTools choices too.

When Advisor is exhausted, src/web-search/loop.ts removes the advisor tool from allTools. It resets the active choice only for a named advisor choice, or for "required" with no remaining tools. An { allowedTools, mode } choice that still lists advisor is not changed. The next iteration sends that stale selector with a catalog that no longer contains advisor. For an xAI route, the next request can be rejected as a dangling tool reference.

The trigger is narrow. The client must send an allowed_tools choice that names advisor. The server setup filters out client-defined tools named advisor when it adds the synthetic tool. A client-defined advisor tool in an allowed_tools choice can therefore leave the selector stale after exhaustion.

Maintainer-side carry for review (no merge). The branch is rebased onto dev fdc6dd82d and now points at 265dfdf80f496c8de354f2c05949fb53132ced04.

  • Your three commits are preserved with your authorship. The only textual conflict was competing imports in src/server/responses/advisor-plan-slot.ts; both AdmissionModelScope (from fix(advisor): preserve captured caller admission scope #7718) and AdvisorPlan are kept. Admission-scope propagation in sidecar-execution.ts and runtime.ts merged cleanly.
  • Added 265dfdf: when the Advisor continuation limit ended a search-owned turn, accumulated worker usage was reported directly and then again through the bridge (five legs totalling 55 tokens were reported as 55 and 110). It is now reported once, with a regression in tests/advisor/advisor-web-search.test.ts (4 pass / 1 fail before, 5 pass after).

Verification (Bun 1.4.4): the #7857 reproduction fails on dev (0 pass / 2 fail, no consultation in streaming or buffered delivery) and passes here. An independent review of this head found 0 blocking issues; its focused run covered the Advisor suites, web-search loop usage and attribution, and the Anthropic compaction-prefix regression: 306 pass / 0 fail. Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan, layout and file-size guards, and the docs build pass.

Non-blocking, pre-existing on dev: src/web-search/loop.ts:137 still passes an incomplete web_search call (tool_call_end with incomplete: true) through to the client, while this branch suppresses incomplete Advisor calls. That is a separate follow-up.

Not run: full local suite, live providers. Current-head PR CI has been approved.

bd5e05e738e71532598e8de2063aa895a3ac91cc Merge origin/dev into PR #7858 readiness carry

Merged dev b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf with an ordinary merge; original author history and Co-authored-by credit are preserved. Focused verification: bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/advisor/advisor-web-search.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-guard.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-continuation-limit.test.ts tests/web-search/web-search-rotation-usage-attribution.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000 — 109 pass / 0 fail. Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan, docs build and diff check: exit 0.

  • Preserved maintainer fix 265dfdf accounts bounded search worker usage once (historical 4 pass / 1 fail before, 5 pass after). Prior independent review: 0 blockers. Non-blocking inherited dev follow-up: incomplete web_search calls can still be forwarded by src/web-search/loop.ts.

Review threads: 0 replied to and resolved with fixing-commit or source evidence. No new runtime behavior fix was needed, so this lane has no new red-to-green claim; the existing maintainer comments retain the prior regression evidence.

NOT RUN: full local suite (shared-host exception; focused files only), unrestricted test:changed, live providers, native clients and cross-platform acceptance. Hosted CI is checked once after publication and remains an owner gate; this lane cannot approve fork CI or merge. Spanish language/render acceptance, where applicable, remains separate.

src/web-search/loop.ts:1250-1262
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an Anthropic mixed-call replay regression test.

The new mixed test uses OpenAI Chat frames and asserts OpenAI messages ordering. It does not enter the Anthropic replay branch at src/web-search/loop.ts:1229-1251, where Advisor questions are reconstructed from captured original.input and calls are matched by ID.

Existing Anthropic tests cover search-only replay, but none cover an Anthropic worker that emits both Advisor and web-search calls. Add distinct Advisor and search inputs, then assert the original Advisor question reaches the sidecar and each result stays paired with its call ID. Without this case, a regression that swaps the Advisor question or mismatches the mixed call/result pairing can pass the current tests.

covering one Advisor call and one web-search call with distinct inputs. Verify
the reconstructed Advisor question reaches the sidecar and each result remains
paired with its originating call ID; exercise the Anthropic replay branch rather

Maintainer readiness refresh, head 6f881da3b88246f1221a9d538d32ad35d845916e (no PR merge).

6f881da3b88246f1221a9d538d32ad35d845916e docs(advisor): remove dangling limitations reference

Merged dev b16bc0978b2eef1799f38042084809b5a0cd11bf with an ordinary merge; original author history and Co-authored-by credit are preserved. Focused verification: bun test --no-env-file --isolate tests/advisor/advisor-web-search.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-responses-wiring.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-guard.test.ts tests/advisor/advisor-continuation-limit.test.ts tests/web-search/web-search-rotation-usage-attribution.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts --timeout 60000 — 109 pass / 0 fail. Typecheck, structure check, privacy scan, docs build and diff check: exit 0.

Review threads: 1 replied to and resolved with fixing-commit or source evidence.

Maintainer-side conflict refresh (no merge): 996d03067 merges origin/dev into this branch on top of 6f881da, using the same merge-commit approach as the earlier dev refreshes, with no rebase or force push.

The only conflict was tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json: this PR's advisor-web-search.test.ts registration and dev's windows-atomic-write-acl-rearm.test.ts landed on the same line. Both entries are kept. The PR's diff against dev is unchanged, at the same 13 files.

Local checks on the merge (Bun 1.4.4): test-layout guards and the Advisor web-search/wiring suites pass, and typecheck passes. The repository file-size ratchet fails on scripts/test-layout/layout.json (2000 lines, NEW_OVERSIZED). That file is byte-identical to current dev, so it is a dev baseline issue, not this PR.

The push reset the readiness checklist. Please re-tick it for 996d03067 once current-head CI completes. CI for this head has been approved.

Maintainer decision (lidge-jun merge lane): merging at exact head e238980. The carry lane marked this ready to merge. The maintainer lane then merged current dev into the branch, which reset the readiness checklist. This decision records the review in place of the checklist for that maintainer push. Required PR CI is green on this head, there are no unresolved review threads, and typecheck, the file-size ratchet, test layout and structure:check passed locally on the merged tree. Thank you, @auroraflux-jhkim.
