feat(cli): add ocx codex launcher mirroring ocx claude - #7346
Adds ocx codex [codex args...], following the same pattern as ocx claude and ocx opencode: make sure the proxy is running, then exec codex unchanged. Codex routing lives in its config, so a launch never rewrites ~/.codex/config.toml, and plain codex behaves exactly as before.
What a launch does depends on the routing kind (shared classifier in src/codex/inject/routing-classify.ts):
Routing kind
Ensures proxy
User-visible
opencodex-local
yes
routed launch, no notice
native
no
info: not routed, run ocx ensure to route
custom-local / custom-remote
no
warning: foreign gateway, that route is left alone
unknown
attempted
warning: routing could not be verified
Routed launches inject one thing, the same as the shim does: if OPENCODEX_API_AUTH_TOKEN is missing, it is filled from ~/.opencodex/service-api-token. A user export always wins.
--help/-h, --version/-V, and Codex-internal subcommands skip the ensure and pass the environment through. The internal-command and option-with-value sets are now exported from src/codex/shim-templates.ts, so both codex entry points read the same source.
If codex on PATH is the OpenCodex autostart shim, the launcher execs the recorded backing Codex directly, so the shim doesn't repeat the ensure or override a passthrough decision. When the shim state can't be read (always on Windows, where inspection is deferred), it keeps codex and sets OCX_SHIM_BYPASS.
If the ensure fails, the launcher prints one stderr line (CODEX_SHIM_ENSURE_FAILED_DIAGNOSTIC) and still launches codex, the same as the shim. This differs on purpose from ocx claude, which stops: Codex routing is config-owned, so a launch without the proxy still makes sense, and the user is never locked out of codex.
No per-launch routing injection: Codex has no env surface like ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, and a -c/CODEX_HOME overlay would duplicate what config injection already does. That can be a follow-up.
This head is 84fcdcb5 plus a merge of dev, four commits that address the six CodeRabbit threads, one hardening commit, a no-conflict merge of dev1112f5b95 (d2831592a), and a merge of dev4118b90ba (f6ff12d9b) whose only conflict was additive test registrations in scripts/test-layout/layout-codex-collision.json; both sides are kept:
464423075: a shim-inspection error goes through the same bypass verification as an unknown result; a missing codex prints the install hint.
8dfe0cf3c: the project-layer ancestor walk recognizes a symlinked home config by file identity; the ancestor-walk test asserts reason project.
e754de65b: the macOS ACL check walks every entry, accepts deny entries and refuses allow entries that grant any mutation permission.
81e3c9b13: the help text and reference/cli/agents.md in eight languages describe the shim refusal and the full token-withholding rule.
0fec56a89: the same-file exemption applies only when the alias, its directories and its link targets are protected.
7c848f162: on macOS, a path with no extended ACL is admitted (acl_get_file returns NULL with ENOENT in that case, per Apple Libc posix1e/acl_file.c); every other ACL error still refuses. The launcher tests place their fixtures in a location whose ancestor chain passes the ownership check. If a host offers no such location, a positive test first proves that the check refuses the fixture root, then skips with an explicit reason; negative tests always run. The Darwin ACL test removes its ACL before cleanup. This fixes the macOS and Windows hosted-runner failures found by the first lane=all run (40557402277).
33ce710d1: Darwin ACL reads are bound to the validated object. Each entry is opened without following links, its descriptor must have the same device, inode and type as the earlier lstat, and the ACL is read from the descriptor (acl_get_fd_np). A vanished or replaced entry refuses. Negative launcher scenarios now run on every host, including hosts without a protected fixture location.
f1ef79444: link entries are opened with O_SYMLINK alone, because XNU rejects O_SYMLINK | O_NOFOLLOW on a final symlink, and non-links with O_NOFOLLOW. Modeled tests enforce XNU's rule and cover replacement between lstat and open; a macOS-only test covers a protected symlinked home.
7d2b06c90: no-conflict merge of deva5ecb9129.
Every behavior fix has a regression test that failed on the earlier code and passes now.
Independent review: round 1 found one blocking issue (the same-file exemption accepted an alias in a directory other users could write), which 0fec56a89 fixes. Round 2 passed on 0fec56a89 (including a rerun of the round-1 Windows fixture: no token read, reason project). Round 4 passed on the dev merge f6ff12d9b. The first lane=all run on that head exposed the macOS and Windows hosted-runner failures fixed in 7c848f162. Round 5 then found two blocking issues (a vanished path could pass the Darwin ACL read; negative diagnostics were skipped on unsafe hosts), fixed in 33ce710d1. Round 6 found one (O_SYMLINK | O_NOFOLLOW refuses protected symlink aliases), fixed in f1ef79444. Round 7 passed with no blocking findings on this exact head 7d2b06c90.

The three failures are Codex autostart shim > Windows cmd shim restores the caller token (missing, explicit token ensure, explicit token bypass) in tests/codex-integration/codex-shim.test.ts. They fail the same way on unmodified dev1112f5b95 (93 passed, 8 skipped, 3 failed), so they are a host baseline. The macOS ACL test runs only on macOS.
Full-suite scope exception: the full bun run test was not run locally. The shared host was under a coordinator-imposed resource limit (one focused test process per lane). The PR carries ci:full, and a lane=all cross-platform run was dispatched on this exact SHA, covering Windows and macOS.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added ocx codex to launch Codex while preserving its arguments and respecting configured routing.
Eligible local launches can receive an automatic service token after configuration, environment, and filesystem safety checks. Existing credentials are preserved; when checks fail, the token is withheld and a diagnostic is shown.
Bug Fixes
Help, version, and internal commands skip proxy startup and automatic token loading. Native and custom routes also skip proxy startup.
Verified shims launch Codex directly; unsupported or unverifiable managed wrappers are refused.
Documentation
Added CLI reference and integration guidance in multiple languages.
ocx codex [codex args...] gives Codex the claude/opencode launcher pattern on
its config-owned wiring channel: ensure the proxy is running, then exec codex
unchanged. A launch never rewrites ~/.codex/config.toml; the one injection is
the shim's own — a missing OPENCODEX_API_AUTH_TOKEN is re-exported from the
service token file.
--help/-h, --version/-V, and Codex-internal subcommands skip the ensure with
the environment passed through, matching the shim's argv grammar; its option
and internal-command sets are now exported from shim-templates so both codex
entry points share one source. Native routing launches untouched after an
informational notice, foreign gateways pass through with a warning and are
never started against, and unverifiable routing still ensures so a routed
session is not stranded on a dead port. Ensure failure mirrors the shim: one
stderr line, then codex launches anyway.
Structure SSOT lists updated (codex-home detached starts, service-and-sidecars
sibling-marker companions) and the docs-site CLI reference section is mirrored
across all eight locales.

Walkthrough
This change adds ocx codex. It classifies routes and arguments, checks conditions for automatic service-token loading, handles proxy startup and shim handoff, and forwards arguments to Codex. It also adds CLI integration, tests, and documentation.
Changes: Codex CLI launcher

Summary
Credential admission and safeguards src/cli/codex-launch-auth.ts, src/cli/codex-launch-ownership.ts, src/cli/codex-launch-policy.ts, src/cli/codex-launch-diagnostics.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-launcher-{admission,diagnostics,env,security,darwin-acl,darwin-identity}.test.ts, tests/helpers/codex-launch-{private-fixture,darwin-model}.ts
Automatic token loading checks the Codex home, ownership and permissions, system namespace, configuration, arguments, environment, and token consumers. Failed checks withhold the service token and report a fixed diagnostic. Tests cover admission, environment handling, platform checks, and refusal behavior.
The launcher classifies fast paths and routes, attempts proxy startup when required, builds the child environment, verifies shim handoffs, and starts Codex with the original arguments. Tests cover routing, proxy behavior, environment propagation, argument forwarding, and shim handling.
The CLI recognizes and dispatches ocx codex, adds command help, preserves Codex arguments for the launcher, and documents its startup and shim handoff behavior. Tests cover command parsing.
Operational and user documentation docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/agents.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/{fr,ja,ko,ru,tr,zh-cn,zh-tw}/reference/cli/agents.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/codex-integration.md, structure/{cli-management,codex-home}.md, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, scripts/test-layout/layout-codex-collision.json
The English and translated references, guide, and operational documentation describe credential admission, routing, proxy startup, and shim handling. Test-layout mappings and Codex home documentation record related test and configuration behavior.

The new ocx codex launcher still has open concerns outside this incremental change. A shim handoff may start the proxy or load a token despite a passthrough decision. A symlinked ~/.codex may be refused token delivery. A missing codex binary may show a misleading message. Help text may understate when the token is withheld. The macOS ACL concern is addressed. Resolve or accept the remaining launcher concerns before merging.

The launcher already decided whether to ensure the proxy; running the
autostart shim would ensure again and load the admission token even on a
native or custom passthrough. Exec the recorded backing Codex instead, and
set OCX_SHIM_BYPASS when the shim state cannot be read.
Docs and help now say the unknown-routing path attempts the ensure and
still launches with one stderr line if it fails.

The launcher adds a second entry into shim selection, proxy startup and service-token inheritance. Keep fast-path argv handling, user-owned/unknown routing, backing-shim bypass and launch failure distinct. The unresolved executable-inspection failure thread needs a concrete outcome and a regression; author-reported broad baseline failures need the named paired baseline receipt. Credential/startup review remains separate from CLI documentation.
Current-head functional workflows are awaiting fork approval; that is pending execution, not a passing test result. No local suite was run for this branch in this intake. No workflow approval, new scan, live configuration change or merge was performed. Required review/readiness gates remain in force.
Needs fixes before this can land: catch inspection failures at PR #7346codex-launcher.ts:220, return the existing unknown-state bypass fallback and add regression coverage. Shard the new layout entry: its added line would reach the prohibited 2,000-line threshold (scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts:121). Complete security review and exact-head Ubuntu/Windows validation.
Still needed on dev: yes. The command registry proceeds from Claude to OpenCode without this launcher (src/cli/registry.ts:603). Existing shim bypass handling was already hardened by dbb908f7d8 / #7397.
Exact-head CI at triage time: 458bca2 — latest metadata checks pass; functional CI run 39196596111 is action_required. lane=all on exact head: no.
Please refresh onto current dev when addressing these; heads older than dev need a fresh exact-head CI run before review.
Release triage for v2.93.0 (maintainer decision): deferred until after the 2.93.0 release. This PR stays open.
Why: ocx codex is a new user-facing command, not a fix, and it touches the startup/service-token path through src/cli/codex-launcher.ts and the shim templates, so it needs its own security review. Its exact-head CI fails (test 1/4 / ci in run 39196596111; the log points to release-version-line.test.ts because the branch is 168 commits behind dev). The open review thread on lookup and shim-inspection errors in src/cli/codex-launcher.ts is also still unaddressed: a failed lookup should fall back to the existing unknown/bypass path instead of throwing.
To pick it back up: rebase onto current dev, handle the lookup/shim errors with a regression test, register the new test in a layout shard (scripts/test-layout/layout.json has no line headroom), and get green exact-head CI.
Handle lookup and shim inspection failures through the existing bypass path.
Keep Codex help argv intact and defer root shim repair to the launch plan.
Pin client token reads to the service file, reject management credentials,
and leave unknown routing free of newly injected admission credentials.
Register launcher tests in an existing layout shard and sync CLI references.

Require current-user ownership and protected filesystem mutation permissions for
the canonical Codex home and config. Verify the machine configuration namespace
cannot be created by another user; inspect Windows owner SIDs/raw DACLs and
POSIX ownership/modes, Darwin extended ACLs and forced preferences.
Add regression-first admission cases, preserve earlier shim/home/proxy controls,

Require ownership and replacement resistance for each lexical project alias,
its ancestors, and every intermediate symlink target before the same-file
exemption can authorize reading the local proxy service token. Inspection
failures retain the project refusal. Reuse the Windows ACL subprocess with
an arbitrary path-chain mode and inspect Darwin link ACLs without following
the final link. Preserve link target dot segments during the lexical walk.
The canonical-home-only alternative cannot preserve the protected ~/.codex
symlink case: resolveCodexLaunchHome canonicalizes the supplied path before
codexLaunchHomeIsOwned sees it, so there is no already-validated lexical alias
chain to reuse. Validate that chain explicitly instead of assuming its safety.
Add writable alias parent, ancestor, redirect and Windows link-entry
regressions, plus failed-inspection coverage and a relative home-link control.
Against the original 81e3c9b auth/ownership modules, the six-case subset has
1 pass and 5 fail; the five negatives each read the token once. Final focused
validation has 205 pass, 4 macOS-only skips, 0 fail (1171 expectations).
Typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan and the file-size ratchet pass.
Full suite, test:changed, builds, native POSIX/macOS execution and hosted CI
were not run under this implementation lane's host limits.

Refuse legacy POSIX shim wrappers before the launcher sets OCX_SHIM_BYPASS.
On POSIX, codexCommandCanBypass returns true for every non-win32 path, so no content check runs. When shim state is unknown, the launcher sets OCX_SHIM_BYPASS=1 on the selected file. The current POSIX template honors the bypass before it reads the token. The revision-3 template, which is still present on disk in older installs, did not. It read service-api-token whenever OPENCODEX_API_AUTH_TOKEN was empty, so the bypass flag does not stop the token export. A legacy wrapper selected through an unknown state, such as an unreadable codex-shim.json, can therefore export the token into a native or custom passthrough Codex launch.
The legacy wrapper's ensure call is gated by OCX_SHIM_BYPASS, so this path does not start the proxy. The exposure is the token export only.
Suggested change: in codexCommandCanBypass, refuse a POSIX wrapper that contains SHIM_MARKER but not UNIX_SHIM_REVISION_MARKER. Return CODEX_UNVERIFIED_SHIM, as the Windows path already does for obsolete wrappers. Keep an unreadable ordinary native binary launchable.

Review comment at @src/cli/codex-launcher.ts around lines 259 - 261:
Update codexCommandCanBypass so POSIX commands containing SHIM_MARKER but
lacking UNIX_SHIM_REVISION_MARKER are rejected as unverified, preventing the
launcher from setting OCX_SHIM_BYPASS for legacy wrappers. Preserve
launchability for unreadable ordinary native binaries.

Maintainer test exception (test-exception-approved) for the hygiene finding focused_or_skipped_test at tests/helpers/codex-launch-private-fixture.ts:87.
The test.skip there is conditional. It runs only on a host whose fixture locations all sit under a directory chain that other principals can write, such as some hosted Windows runner work and temp directories. On such a host, the launcher refuses to deliver the token by design. Before skipping, the helper calls the same ownership check on the fixture root and asserts that it refuses with the ownership reason. Only the positive "token is delivered" assertion is skipped, and the skip name states why. Every negative scenario (refusals, zero token reads, diagnostics) still runs on every host. The skip is not a focus, and it does not hide a failing assertion.
Independent review rounds 5 to 7 examined this design. Round 7 passed with no blocking findings on 7d2b06c90. In the exact-head lane=all run 40591319046, every macOS and Windows job passed, and the skip never fired: the helper found a protected fixture location on both runner types. The positive token-delivery tests (loads the service token for the managed provider..., the symlinked user .codex case) passed on macOS and on Windows. The skip remains a guard for hosts that offer no protected location at all.
Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md, "Review and merge policy": a maintainer with admin access may integrate a PR into dev without another maintainer approval). This is maintainer integration, not an approving review. The PR carries maintainer-sponsored because it handles the local proxy's API key.
Security review: independent review rounds were run on this head's lineage. Round 1 (81e3c9b13) found one High issue: the same-file alias exemption. Round 2 passed on its fix 0fec56a89. Round 3 found that dev had moved and created a layout conflict; round 4 passed on the resolved merge f6ff12d9b. The first cross-platform run on that head then found the macOS and Windows hosted-runner failures, fixed in 7c848f162. Round 5 found two issues (a vanished path could pass the Darwin ACL read; negative diagnostics were skipped on unsafe hosts), fixed in 33ce710d1. Round 6 found one (O_SYMLINK | O_NOFOLLOW refused protected symlink aliases), fixed in f1ef79444. Round 7 returned PASS with 0 blocking findings on this exact head 7d2b06c90. All six CodeRabbit threads are answered and resolved.
Exact-head CI: Cross-platform CI run 40591320731 (ci:full) passed. Catalog async contracts run 40591320795 passed. A lane=all run on this exact SHA, 40591319046, passed every macOS and Windows job, including the token-delivery positives and the native Darwin ACL and symlinked-home tests. Its final ci summary job was cancelled by the coordinator's queue cleanup; under the updated CI policy, lane=all is a batched dev check and is not re-run per PR. The hygiene gate passed after the maintainer test exception recorded above.
Combined with current dev: GitHub reports the PR as mergeable. A local union check of this head with dev338bcf531 (no conflict) passed scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, the layout guards and skill-ocx (44 passed, 0 failed), typecheck and skill:surface:check. An earlier union with deva09e882ae plus #7472 also passed the launcher suites, layout guards, file-size ratchet, skill-ocx and cli-head (313 passed, 5 macOS-only skips, 0 failed).
Gate status: the target/description gate enforce-target was cancelled in the coordinator's queue cleanup; its single re-run on this head is still queued. The dev ruleset has no required status checks.
Local verification and scope exception: see the "Maintainer integration verification" section in the description.

Summary
Adds
ocx codex [codex args...], following the same pattern asocx claudeandocx opencode: make sure the proxy is running, then execcodexunchanged. Codex routing lives in its config, so a launch never rewrites~/.codex/config.toml, and plaincodexbehaves exactly as before. What a launch does depends on the routing kind (shared classifier in
src/codex/inject/routing-classify.ts):opencodex-localnativeocx ensureto routecustom-local/custom-remoteunknownOPENCODEX_API_AUTH_TOKENis missing, it is filled from~/.opencodex/service-api-token. A user export always wins.--help/-h,--version/-V, and Codex-internal subcommands skip the ensure and pass the environment through. The internal-command and option-with-value sets are now exported fromsrc/codex/shim-templates.ts, so bothcodexentry points read the same source.codexon PATH is the OpenCodex autostart shim, the launcher execs the recorded backing Codex directly, so the shim doesn't repeat the ensure or override a passthrough decision. When the shim state can't be read (always on Windows, where inspection is deferred), it keepscodexand setsOCX_SHIM_BYPASS.CODEX_SHIM_ENSURE_FAILED_DIAGNOSTIC) and still launchescodex, the same as the shim. This differs on purpose fromocx claude, which stops: Codex routing is config-owned, so a launch without the proxy still makes sense, and the user is never locked out ofcodex.ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, and a-c/CODEX_HOMEoverlay would duplicate what config injection already does. That can be a follow-up.Verification

The launcher tests place their fixtures in a location whose ancestor chain passes the ownership check. If a host offers no such location, a positive test first proves that the check refuses the fixture root, then skips with an explicit reason; negative tests always run. The Darwin ACL test removes its ACL before cleanup. This fixes the macOS and Windows hosted-runner failures found by the firstlane=allrun (40557402277).33ce710d1: Darwin ACL reads are bound to the validated object. Each entry is opened without following links, its descriptor must have the same device, inode and type as the earlierlstat, and the ACL is read from the descriptor (acl_get_fd_np). A vanished or replaced entry refuses. Negative launcher scenarios now run on every host, including hosts without a protected fixture location.f1ef79444: link entries are opened withO_SYMLINKalone, because XNU rejectsO_SYMLINK | O_NOFOLLOWon a final symlink, and non-links withO_NOFOLLOW. Modeled tests enforce XNU's rule and cover replacement betweenlstatandopen; a macOS-only test covers a protected symlinked home.7d2b06c90: no-conflict merge ofdeva5ecb9129.Every behavior fix has a regression test that failed on the earlier code and passes now.
