Reviewer's GuideThis documentation-and-test-only PR pins issue #507 as a regression: it verifies through real-binary fixtures and generated boundary cases that bracket labels containing letters or digits remain intact and wrapping is idempotent, while documenting the existing whitespace-based fragment-merging behavior as the fix. #570 (#561) lets the wrapper break only at source whitespace, so an opener written directly before its label can no longer be split and `[a]` is a fixed point, whatever the label's characters. This records the fix. The corpus gains the issue's two reproductions as cases E2 and E3, and `tests/issue_507_bracket_label_wrap_is_idempotent.rs` runs them through the binary. A property grows prose to the wrap boundary in front of labels of letters and digits. ADR 0006 gains a 2026-09-27 addendum retiring the digit-only residue, and ADR 0010 points to it. The alphabetic shape dates from #258 (d427f7b), which split `[` from its label. The #505 tests generated only digit labels.

Review found the integration tests vacuous and non-idiomatic.
- `first.contains("[a]")` was already true for both reproductions, and
the line-end check for one, so neither could fail on a real
regression. Each reproduction now asserts its exact output: the
spaced label moves whole to the next line, and the touching label is
left on its line. Both fail at 91aa6d9, the commit before #570, and
pass here. The property also asserts no line ends with an opener.
- A new case pins the break opportunity after an opener followed by a
space, so a regression that removed it fails a test (`[ a]` breaks
after `[` and is stable).
- The tests reuse `tests/support/cli_stdin.rs` instead of a second
binary-launch wrapper, and read fixtures through a `cap_std` directory
capability instead of `std::fs`.
- ADR 0010 is accepted, so its recorded limitation is left as written
and a dated addendum records that #507 fixed it. ADR 0006's addendum
names the new tests.

Summary
Closes #507. Wrapping a bracket label is now idempotent. #570 has merged, so this now targets
maindirectly. The fix is #570's mechanism, and this pull request adds no production code. #570 (merged as
e390db1) merges any two neighbouring wrap fragments that meet with no whitespace, so the wrapper can break only where the source has whitespace. An opener written directly before its label, as in[a], is therefore one run and cannot be split, whatever the label's characters. A bracket followed by a space, as in[ not a reference], keeps its break opportunity. This is the first direction #507 proposed, narrowed to touching tokens. What this adds
tests/data/idempotence/issue_507_label_after_space.datandissue_507_label_touching.dat. They are the issue's two reproductions and are recorded intests/idempotence.rsas casesE2_alphabetic_label_after_spaceandE3_alphabetic_label_touching.tests/issue_507_bracket_label_wrap_is_idempotent.rs. Its invariant is that wrapping a bracket label is idempotent.[a]on its own line; the touching reproduction must come out unchanged. Each must be a fixed point. Exact output is asserted becausecontains("[a]")held for both before the fix.[ a]on the boundary must break after[and be stable, pinning the break opportunity that a bracket followed by a space keeps.tests/support/cli_stdin.rsand reads fixtures throughcap_std.Regression history
The bisect over the shape check runs between 0.3.1 (fixed point) and 0.4.0 (not). It names
d427f7b(2025-11-15), #258 "Refactor tokenize_inline into tokenizer; support adjacent links/images". After that change the tokenizer emitted[anda]as separate tokens, and nothing bound them. #504 (#505) later coupled the pair for digit labels only, and ADR 0006 recorded the alphabetic case as a deliberate residue. Why no test caught it
The corpus case #505 added (
E1_bracket_after_bold_code) and thebracket_reference_seam_strategyproperty both generate only digit labels,[1]and[12]. The alphabetic shape was documented as accepted, so no test asserted it. The new fixtures and property include letters.Evidence
The regression test fails without the fix:
91aa6d9, the commit before Break wrapped lines only at source whitespace (#561) #570 (e390db1), both exact-output reproductions and the property fail (the[ a]case is a pin and passes on both);d427f7b(Refactor tokenize_inline into tokenizer; support adjacent links/images #258), the touching-label case fails. This run used the fixture inputs inline and dropped the property, because that commit predates the corpus directory and theproptestdependency. It passes on this branch, which is Break wrapped lines only at source whitespace (#561) #570 plus these tests.
Gates on this branch:
make check-fmt,make markdownlint,make nixie,make test,make lint,make typecheck,make verus,make verus-selftestandmake verus-mutation.Proof issue
No separate proof issue. #571 (the #561 proof) states LEM-WRAP-IS-A-FIXED-POINT-ON-WORDS, and #507 is exactly that lemma's shape: a second pass changes nothing because the first pass kept every word whole. A separate issue would restate the same theorem. #571 names #507 in its related issues.
