Review round 1 on #570: `join_touching_fragments` copied the growing prefix and reclassified it on every merge, which is quadratic in the length of a whitespace-free run of many fragments. It now groups neighbouring touching fragments into runs first, then concatenates and classifies each run once. A run of one keeps the fragment grouping built. Behaviour is unchanged.

Markdown renders a soft line break as a space. When `--wrap` breaks between two characters that touch in the source, it therefore adds a space to the rendered text, and two or more trailing spaces on a line it broke render as a hard break. #561 reported five such shapes: `(` before a reference link, `/` between code spans, `-[` inside a word, `**` around a code span, and the mirror `][4]).`. It also reported a break at a run of two spaces. After grouping, `join_touching_fragments` merges every pair of neighbouring fragments whose seam has no whitespace, so whitespace fragments are the only places `textwrap` can break. `render_line` now trims every trailing space from a line the wrapper broke; the final line keeps the source's own. The same mechanism fixes #507. The shapes regressed in #271 (the textwrap adapter), #395 (reference links became one token) and #233 (which pinned the hard break in `wrap_preserving_code_splits_after_consecutive_whitespace`). That test is restored to expect no trailing spaces. The `spanning_code_span_-` snapshot is corrected, since it recorded a break inside `` kani-full` ``. `tests/issue_561_wrap_never_breaks_without_whitespace.rs` pins each reproduction and checks the word-preservation invariant as a property.
Address the review round on the #561 fix: - name the wrap width in the regression suite (`WRAP_COLS`) instead of repeating the literal; - add an `insta` snapshot of the command-line output, so the whole rendered document is pinned rather than only the asserted lines; - describe the join stage and trailing-space trimming in `docs/architecture.md`, with an addendum to ADR 0002; - record the fix in the CHANGELOG under Unreleased.
The guide still said non-final lines may keep a hard-break double space. Every line the wrapper breaks now loses all trailing spaces; only a segment's final line keeps the source's, which is where a source hard break sits because the paragraph writer ends a segment at each one. Reconcile the render_line description and the hard-break constraint to that rule.

#570 (#561) lets the wrapper break only at source whitespace, so an opener written directly before its label can no longer be split and `[a]` is a fixed point, whatever the label's characters. This records the fix. The corpus gains the issue's two reproductions as cases E2 and E3, and `tests/issue_507_bracket_label_wrap_is_idempotent.rs` runs them through the binary. A property grows prose to the wrap boundary in front of labels of letters and digits. ADR 0006 gains a 2026-09-27 addendum retiring the digit-only residue, and ADR 0010 points to it. The alphabetic shape dates from #258 (d427f7b), which split `[` from its label. The #505 tests generated only digit labels.
Review found the integration tests vacuous and non-idiomatic.
- `first.contains("[a]")` was already true for both reproductions, and
the line-end check for one, so neither could fail on a real
regression. Each reproduction now asserts its exact output: the
spaced label moves whole to the next line, and the touching label is
left on its line. Both fail at 91aa6d9, the commit before #570, and
pass here. The property also asserts no line ends with an opener.
- A new case pins the break opportunity after an opener followed by a
space, so a regression that removed it fails a test (`[ a]` breaks
after `[` and is stable).
- The tests reuse `tests/support/cli_stdin.rs` instead of a second
binary-launch wrapper, and read fixtures through a `cap_std` directory
capability instead of `std::fs`.
- ADR 0010 is accepted, so its recorded limitation is left as written
and a dated addendum records that #507 fixed it. ADR 0006's addendum
names the new tests.
Closes #507. Wrapping a bracket label is idempotent. The fix is #570's mechanism, which merges any two neighbouring wrap fragments that meet with no whitespace, so the wrapper can break only at source whitespace; this adds no production code. Adds the corpus fixtures for the issue's two reproductions and `tests/issue_507_bracket_label_wrap_is_idempotent.rs`: exact-output tests for both (which fail at 91aa6d9, before #570), a pin for the break opportunity after an opener followed by a space, and a property over generated labels on the wrap boundary. ADR 0006 gains an addendum and ADR 0010 a dated note.
Summary
Fixes #561.
--wrapnow breaks a line only where the source already has whitespace, and a break it makes never leaves trailing spaces.Markdown renders a soft line break as a space. A break placed between two characters that touch in the source therefore adds a space to the rendered text, and two or more spaces left at a line end render as a hard break

The change
src/wrap/inline/touching.rs(new):join_touching_fragmentsruns after grouping. It merges any two neighbouring fragments whose seam has no whitespace. It reads the text at the seam rather than the fragment kinds, because grouping sometimes couples a leading space into a fragment (a bare bracket reference carries the space before it). Whitespace fragments are then the only break opportunitiestextwrapsees. This one rule replaces a family of per-construct couplings, each of which covered one shape.render_linetrims every trailing space from a line the wrapper broke. Only the final line keeps the source's own trailing spaces, which is where a real hard break lives.join_touching_fragments, anddocs/trailing-spaces.mdadds the break-side rule.A run with no whitespace in it is never split, even when that leaves a line longer than the target width.
Regression history
I bisected with a shape checker over released versions (0.3.1 to 0.6.0) and then over commits. None of the shapes is a single regression:

The fragment builder instead emitted punctuation and Markdown syntax as separate fragments, andtextwrapmay break between any two fragments. The remaining sites belong to #562 (Setext), #563 (renumber), #564 (reopened code spans in a prefixed block) and #565 (HTML blocks). One more comes from a broken table that mdtablefix reflows by design.
Relation to open work
The user's #556 ("Preserve unspaced inline code seams") couples a non-whitespace token to a following code span. That covers the slash and strong-code shapes. This change covers every seam, those two included. The two are compatible: #556 makes the seams atomic during grouping, and this merge would find nothing left to join. #507 is fixed by the same mechanism (
[touchinga]) and gets its own pull request with its corpus fixture and ADR update.Gates
