test(id): plaza guest ABI conformance suite (F12.7, #1064) - #5067
Implements the F12.7 remainder for #1064 (queue task 8065): a conformance suite for the plaza guest ABI in pkgs/id/examples/roc-world/ABI.md, living beside the sandbox tests in pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs and runnable with cargo test --lib conformance. It loads only the checked-in Wasm modules — no Roc toolchain required.
What it asserts:
Export surface & signatures — the ABI.md export table is parsed at test time; all 14 documented plaza_* exports must exist on roc-counter and tic-tac-toe with the exact Wasm signatures, no undocumented exports ship, and plaza_abi_version returns 1. Failures name the offending export.
Buffer ownership / output slots — roc-counter driven at the raw ABI level: plaza_alloc → write → plaza_update → plaza_free with the exact allocation length; outputs read through the shared plaza_out_len slot for both plaza_view and plaza_snapshot; the plaza_error_ptr/plaza_error_len diagnostic pair stays within its 4096-byte cap; plaza_restore consumes a host-allocated buffer that is freed afterwards.
Snapshot/restore round-trip — view and records survive restore, and a restored model re-snapshots byte-identically (the ABI probe rule); plaza_records parses as a JSON object and plaza_wants documents satisfy the world_caps schema.

Tests
Expanded validation for the bundled counter and tic-tac-toe modules, including checks for documented exports, ABI version, and parameter and result types.
Added coverage for counter input handling, snapshot and restore consistency, and deterministic replay of a scripted chat session. These checks help catch compatibility and consistency issues before release.
Adds the conformance suite beside the sandbox tests in pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs, runnable with cargo test --lib conformance and loading only the checked-in Wasm modules (no Roc toolchain):
- conformance_documented_exports_match_abi_md_signatures parses the ABI.md export table and asserts all 14 documented plaza_* exports exist on roc-counter and tic-tac-toe with the exact Wasm signatures, and that no undocumented export ships; failures name the export.
- conformance_abi_version_export_returns_one asserts plaza_abi_version == 1 on both modules.
- conformance_buffer_ownership_and_shared_output_slot drives roc-counter at the raw ABI level: plaza_alloc/write/plaza_update/plaza_free ownership, outputs read through the shared plaza_out_len slot (view and snapshot), the plaza_error_ptr/len diagnostic pair within its 4096-byte cap, and plaza_restore from a host-allocated buffer.
- conformance_snapshot_restore_round_trip_is_byte_identical asserts view/records survive snapshot/restore and the restored model re-snapshots byte-identically (the ABI probe rule); records parse as a JSON object and wants documents satisfy the world_caps schema.
- conformance_capability_protocol_replays_through_the_fixture_base runs the roc-chat cap protocol live (chat.say r0, chat.history r1), then encodes the session as a world fixture (#239), round-trips encode/decode, check_module, replay (view reproduced), and the #544 determinism verify.
ABI.md needed no corrections: every documented signature matched the checked-in modules. Tests (laptop): cargo test --lib conformance 6 passed (5 new + 1 existing contract check), cargo test --lib checked_in_roc_examples_export_abi_version_one passes unchanged, cargo test --lib sandbox:: 36 passed.

Walkthrough
The sandbox test suite checks Plaza ABI exports and signatures, ABI versioning, counter and snapshot behavior, and roc-chat capability-session replay for the checked-in Wasm modules.
Changes: Plaza ABI conformance
Layer / File(s)
Summary
ABI fixtures and export checks pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs
The tests parse documented export signatures and check that both modules expose the documented exports with matching types. They also check that plaza_abi_version returns 1.
Counter and snapshot behavior pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs
The counter test exercises guest-owned input allocation, output-slot use, diagnostic getter bounds, and restore from a host-allocated snapshot buffer. Snapshot tests check view and records after restore, and compare snapshot bytes for both modules.
Roc-chat capability replay pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs
The test drives input and host result events, checks requested chat capabilities and the resulting view, then encodes, decodes, checks, and replays a fixture with per-event determinism checks.
The suite strengthens ABI validation without changing production behavior, but can incorrectly reject a guest allocation at offset zero. Correct that localized assertion; the additional coverage improvements are suitable follow-up work.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1064 has these coding requirements. (1) Versioned specification of the plaza_* exports and capability protocol: pkgs/id/examples/roc-world/ABI.md at the reviewed head is the v1 spec. It documents 14 plaza_* exports, the buffer lifetime rules, the snapshot/restore pair, and the capability protocol. This PR does not change it. The existing spec satisfies this requirement. (2) plaza_abi_version export: documented in ABI.md as returning 1. The new test conformance_abi_version_export_returns_one asserts the value 1 for roc-counter and tic-tac-toe. The existing test checked_in_roc_examples_export_abi_version_one is reported unchanged. (3) Conformance suite: five tests are added to the sandbox.rs test module. conformance_documented_exports_match_abi_md_signatures parses the ABI.md table at test time and compares export names and Wasm signatures. conformance_buffer_ownership_and_shared_output_slot covers plaza_alloc, plaza_free, the shared plaza_out_len slot, the 4096-byte diagnostic cap, and plaza_restore. conformance_snapshot_restore_round_trip_is_byte_identical covers view and records round-trip and byte-identical re-snapshot. conformance_capability_protocol_replays_through_the_fixture_base runs the roc-chat session and imports world_fixture types. (4) Fixture base from #544 and #239: the capability test uses world_fixture (Fixture, FixtureEvent, FixtureHeader, Verdict). The tail of the diff was truncated in the evidence, so the encode/decode, check_module, replay, and verify steps were not read directly. The author reports that they pass. (5) Exit criterion: the suite runs against the checked-in roc-counter.wasm, tic-tac-toe.wasm, and roc-chat.wasm. The PR does not modify any Roc example source. Pass results are author-reported and were not re-executed. Note: the suite requires all 14 documented exports on both modules. ABI.md marks plaza_layout, plaza_records, plaza_wants, and the diagnostic getters as optional. This is stricter than the spec, but the Roc examples are the target and the author reports that they pass. The coordination text in #1064 is administrative and excluded from the assessment.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes one file, pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs (+408/-0 per the raw summary, with no declaration changes). The visible hunk lies inside the existing mod tests block and adds a comment banner that cites F12.7 and #1064, a const ABI_MD, a CONFORMANCE_MODULES array, a helper that parses ABI.md, a raw-instance helper, and five #[test] functions. All additions support the ABI conformance requirements of #1064. No production code, Roc source, or ABI.md content is changed. The included Wasm modules (examples/roc-counter/counter.wasm, apps/tic-tac-toe/program/tic-tac-toe.wasm, examples/roc-chat/roc-chat.wasm) are existing checked-in files, and the tests only read them. The truncated tail of the diff was not directly read. The raw summary indicates that it also contains test code only.

Rename the five new conformance tests with a test_ prefix.
The five new #[test] functions in pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs start with conformance_. The repository naming rule requires a test_ prefix. The cargo test --lib conformance filter is a substring match, so the renamed tests still run under the same command.

conformance_buffer_ownership_and_shared_output_slot,
conformance_snapshot_restore_round_trip_is_byte_identical, and

test bodies unchanged.
Extend the ABI version and signature checks to the other checked-in Roc guests.
Extend the ABI version and signature checks to the other checked-in Roc guests.
CONFORMANCE_MODULES lists only roc-counter and tic-tac-toe. The documented-signature, ABI-version, and snapshot/restore tests iterate only this list. A changed plaza_abi_version return value in roc-screen, roc-grid, roc-chat, lounge, or territory therefore does not fail cargo test --lib conformance.
Add these guests in a separate step. Before adding each guest, confirm it passes the documented-signature checks. Treat a missing plaza_abi_version export as allowed, because ABI.md says older guests may omit it. Do not make the version test require the export for every listed guest. The buffer-ownership test does not use this list, so it is not affected by this change.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs around lines 972 - 980:
Extend CONFORMANCE_MODULES with roc-screen, roc-grid, roc-chat, lounge, and
territory in a separate step, adding each guest only after it passes the
documented-signature checks. Preserve optional plaza_abi_version exports: update
the version check so guests that omit the export remain allowed rather than
requiring it for every listed guest.
Add a test that fails when plazafree has no effect.
Add a test that fails when plaza_free has no effect.
The new test calls plaza_free once. Its assertions check the view and snapshot bytes, and those bytes do not depend on the free. A guest whose plaza_free does nothing still passes. The host currently frees each input, so this is a gap for a future regression, not a present leak. Without such a test, that regression could grow guest memory across repeated updates until the configured memory limit traps.
Add a test that observes reuse. Choose the input size and cycle count so that a missing free forces linear memory to grow. Measure the free's effect apart from allocations made during update, because guest update calls use the same allocator. Confirm that the chosen size and cycle count produce growth under a no-op free before relying on the assertion.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs at line 1156:
Extend the test containing the `free.call` invocation to verify that
`plaza_free` enables guest memory reuse, rather than relying on view or snapshot
bytes. Choose an input size and repeated cycle count that demonstrably grows
linear memory when free is a no-op, and measure the free’s effect separately
from allocations made by `update` before asserting reuse.
Add post-trap diagnostic coverage with a diagnostic-producing fixture.
Add post-trap diagnostic coverage with a diagnostic-producing fixture.
The conformance suite reads plaza_error_len only at rest, and it accepts 0. That is valid, because the ABI makes the diagnostic optional. No test reads the diagnostic after a trap or asserts the ; guest diagnostic: suffix. The existing trap test, metrics_survive_a_trap_with_guest_diagnostics, returns 0 from plaza_error_len. A regression in the post-trap getters or the suffix path would not fail any test.
Covering the captured bytes needs a trap fixture that exports a nonzero diagnostic. Its plaza_error_len must return a length from 1 to 4096, and the range that plaza_error_ptr returns must lie inside guest memory. Any conforming trap is not enough: a trap without diagnostic bytes is valid. Keep a zero-length trap as a separate case, and assert that no suffix is added.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs around lines 1166 - 1171:
Add post-trap diagnostic coverage using a fixture that traps and exports a
nonzero diagnostic length from 1 to 4096 with its pointer range inside guest
memory; assert the captured bytes appear in the `; guest diagnostic: ` suffix.
Keep a separate zero-length trap case and assert it adds no suffix, preserving
the ABI’s optional-diagnostic behavior. Extend the existing trap test,
`metrics_survive_a_trap_with_guest_diagnostics`, or add focused tests that
exercise the post-trap `plaza_error_len` and `plaza_error_ptr` getters.
Add a mid-game tic-tac-toe case to the round-trip test.
Add a mid-game tic-tac-toe case to the round-trip test.
The round-trip loop snapshots tic-tac-toe only before any move. The completed-game restore test covers only a finished board. A restore that rebuilds an in-progress board incorrectly can pass both checks. The host can snapshot a live game at any time, so this path needs coverage.
The proposed moves place X at cell 0 and O at cell 3. This gives a live board with two plays and no winner. The moves run before the snapshot, as the existing roc-counter moves do.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs around lines 1204 - 1207:
Extend the round-trip test setup before its snapshot so the tic-tac-toe case has
a live board with X at cell 0 and O at cell 3, using the existing world update
flow. Keep the roc-counter setup unchanged and ensure the tic-tac-toe snapshot
occurs after both moves.
The chat.say check matches only the request id and cap. A guest request with different text still passes this check. The last=hi assertion comes from the scripted history, not from the requested text, so it does not cover this case either.
Add an assertion that the r0 request's text argument equals hi. This adds coverage for the value that the host dispatcher later commits. The test does not run the dispatcher, so dispatcher behavior needs separate coverage.

Review comment at @pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs around lines 1301 - 1304:
Extend the `parsed.requests` assertion to verify that the `r0` request with
capability `chat.say` also has `text` equal to `hi`. Keep this check scoped to
the parsed request; dispatcher behavior is not exercised by this test.
Parse the history wants request instead of matching a substring.
Parse the history wants request instead of matching a substring.
The assertion at line 1316 checks only wants.contains("chat.history"). Text that parse_wants rejects still passes this check. The chat.say check at line 1300 already parses the document and matches the request by id and capability. Applying the same check to the history request makes this assertion enforce the schema that the nearby comment describes. This strengthens coverage of existing behavior. It does not address a current failure.

Update the history assertion after WorldProgram::wants to parse the wants
document with parse_wants, then verify that parsed.requests contains a request
with id r1 and capability chat.history instead of checking for a substring.
Allow offset zero from plaza_alloc in the conformance test.
The assertion at pkgs/id/src/sandbox.rs:1151 requires in_ptr > 0. ABI.md defines pointers as byte offsets and does not reserve zero. A valid guest allocator that returns offset zero fails the test before plaza_update runs. Change the check to reject only negative values.
