feat(core): hidden model state — picker-hidden but routable (#230) - #1547
packages/schema: hidden boolean on the model config overlay and an optional hidden flag on Model.Info; carried onto the record by provider config normalization. A hidden model stays enabled (unlike disabled).
packages/core/src/model.ts: the picker list (available) excludes hidden models; all still contains them.
packages/client: regenerated types (+2 lines).
Execution eligibility + picker reveal (commit abd9ca4, from Codex review)
Codex's review of the first commit found four execution paths that read the picker list and would have broken hidden models' routability. All four are fixed by sourcing execution semantics from the enabled records instead:
Server model.list serves enabled models including hidden (disabled still excluded), so client validity catalogs (TUI isModelValid) keep hidden selections valid.
SubagentTool.resolveModel: explicit hidden model selection resolves.
ModelResolvercascadeToParent: hidden parent routes still cascade.
ModelResolver.resolve alias predicate: a real hidden model keeps precedence over an overlapping alias. (The implicit default-model fallback still uses the picker list, deliberately.)
App: normalizeProviderList carries hidden; the picker controller and a new isExactModelName helper in search.ts hide hidden models unless the search is the exact full name (name, id, provider/id, or providerName/name).
TUI: the model dialog applies the same hide/reveal rule to its browse list (favorites/recents are explicit choices and unaffected).

Walkthrough
Model configuration now supports a hidden flag. Hidden models remain enabled for route expansion and explicit resolution, but are excluded from picker lists by default. Catalog and model-resolution paths include enabled hidden models.
Changes: Hidden model visibility and catalog
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define hidden state and separate model lists packages/schema/src/config/provider.ts, packages/schema/src/model.ts, packages/core/src/config/plugin/provider.ts, packages/core/src/model.ts, packages/core/test/config/provider.test.ts, packages/core/test/model-routes-expand.test.ts
The schemas and provider transform carry the optional hidden flag. models.available() excludes hidden models, while the enabled-model catalog includes them. Tests cover catalog membership and route expansion.
Use the catalog for execution and resolution packages/core/src/model-resolver.ts, packages/core/src/plugin/host.ts, packages/core/src/session/context.ts, packages/core/src/tool/plugin/subagent.ts, packages/server/src/handlers/model.ts
Execution and resolution paths use the catalog or all enabled models, so hidden models can participate in explicit resolution and route fallback. The plugin host and model.list handler return the catalog.
Pickers omit hidden models by default. The app and TUI include hidden models for exact full-name searches; the TUI also fuzzy-searches provider-qualified names and references.
Adjust defaults and carry hidden state packages/app/src/providers/models/selection.tsx, packages/app/src/providers/models/unpaid.tsx, packages/app/src/runtime/server/global-sync/utils.ts, packages/app/src/runtime/server/types.ts, packages/cli/src/acp/catalog.ts, packages/tui/src/context/local.tsx
Implicit defaults prefer non-hidden models, with fallback to a hidden model when no visible option exists. The free-model list filters hidden models, and runtime model data preserves the flag.
Hidden models can appear in the mini picker or become the app's implicit default despite visible alternatives. These are bounded visibility and selection issues; merging requires owner awareness or localized fixes.

Preserve hidden models in the TUI's validity catalog
When an existing session selects a model that is subsequently marked hidden, the TUI can no longer submit prompts to it. packages/server/src/handlers/model.ts serves models.available() as model.list, while packages/tui/src/context/local.tsx uses that list in isModelValid; the prompt submission guard in packages/tui/src/component/prompt/index.tsx consequently rejects the selection as unavailable. Keep enabled hidden records available to client-side validity checks and filter them only in the picker, so hiding a model does not disable existing sessions.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in abd9ca4: the server model.list handler now serves enabled models including hidden ones (disabled still excluded), so the TUI validity catalog keeps hidden selections valid. Picker hiding moved to the clients: the app picker controller and the TUI model dialog both exclude hidden records except on an exact full-name search, and normalizeProviderList now carries the hidden flag into the app catalog.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Keep hidden models eligible for explicit subagent selection
When a subagent call explicitly names an enabled hidden model, resolveModel in packages/core/src/tool/plugin/subagent.ts searches only models.available() and throws Model "provider/model" is not available before the model resolver runs. Filtering this shared list therefore makes hidden models unusable for explicit subagent requests, rather than merely hiding them from discovery. Update that validation to look up the requested model independently and check enabled without excluding hidden.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in abd9ca4: SubagentTool.resolveModel now looks the explicitly requested model up in the enabled records (models.all() filtered to enabled) instead of the picker list, so an explicit hidden model resolves; only discovery surfaces hide it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Include hidden parent routes in fallback discovery
When a selected sub-route exhausts its targets and its enclosing parent route is hidden, fallback now stops even if the parent has healthy remaining targets. cascadeToParent in packages/core/src/model-resolver.ts builds both its route-definition map and its parent candidates from models.available(), so this filter removes the hidden parent from execution-time routing. Discover fallback parents from enabled models, including hidden ones, to preserve the promised picker-only behavior.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in abd9ca4: cascadeToParent builds its route-definition map and parent candidates from the enabled records (models.all() filtered to enabled), so a hidden parent route still cascades when a sub-route exhausts its targets.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve real-model precedence over aliases for hidden models
When a configured alias overlaps an enabled hidden model's full reference, explicitly requesting that reference now silently selects the alias target instead. ModelResolver.resolve in packages/core/src/model-resolver.ts:1202–1207 builds the alias resolver's existence predicate from models.available(), and ModelAlias.resolveRef uses that predicate to give real model IDs precedence over aliases. For example, with an alias from custom/pooled to custom/listed, hiding the real custom/pooled changes direct resolution to custom/listed. Build this predicate from enabled models including hidden records so picker visibility cannot change which model executes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in abd9ca4: ModelResolver.resolve builds the alias existence predicate from the enabled records (models.all() filtered to enabled), so a real hidden model keeps precedence over an overlapping alias. The implicit default-model fallback at the same site still uses the picker list, deliberately: a hidden model should not become an implicit default.
Cover an explicit hidden: false override of an inherited hidden: true.
The hidden overlay at packages/core/src/config/plugin/provider.ts:224 assigns the configured value whenever it is defined. The new test sets hidden: true only, on pooled. No test in provider.test.ts sets hidden: false. A truthy-only check would keep an inherited true and still pass this test. model-routes-expand.test.ts sets hidden directly on a record, so it does not exercise this overlay.
Add a case where a model whose base record has hidden: true receives the overlay hidden: false. Assert that the model appears in models.available(). This covers the existing override behavior. It does not change current behavior.

Include hidden models in session execution validation
When a session explicitly selects an enabled hidden model, prompt execution still fails with ModelUnavailableError. Although the client catalog and subagent validation now include hidden records, packages/core/src/session/context.ts:103–104 passes model.available into SessionRunnerModel.resolve, whose explicit-selection lookup in packages/core/src/session/runner/model.ts:115–123 rejects anything absent from that list. This also affects existing sessions after their selected model becomes hidden. Use an enabled-including-hidden catalog for session execution validation, while retaining the filtered list for discovery.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 008f240: Model.Service gains a catalog() list — enabled models including hidden ones — and SessionContext now passes model.catalog (not model.available) into SessionRunnerModel.resolve, so explicit session selections of hidden models execute, and existing sessions keep working when their model becomes hidden. Discovery surfaces still read available(). The provider config test now pins the catalog contents (hidden in, disabled out).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve exact-reference matches through the TUI fuzzy filter
When a user searches for a hidden model by its full reference, such as custom/pooled with display name Pooled, this predicate admits it, but the subsequent fuzzysort.go in the same component searches only title and category and removes it again. Neither field contains the full reference, and a differing model ID can fail for the same reason. Preserve exact matches through the subsequent filtering stage, or include the accepted reference fields in that search, so the advertised exact-name reveal actually works.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 008f240: each TUI picker option now carries its full reference (providerID/modelID) and the fuzzysort stage searches it alongside title and category, so an exact-reference search admitted by the hidden filter survives the fuzzy stage.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve preferred-free ordering in the client catalog
For a signed-out user with no configured model or recent selections, replacing available() with all() changes the TUI's default model even when no models are hidden. Model.available() applies preferFree, explicitly keeping big-pickle and the other preferred free models ahead of newer launches, whereas all() is sorted solely by release date. packages/tui/src/context/local.tsx:204 selects the first catalog entry as its fallback, so this endpoint bypasses that existing default-selection policy. Preserve the preferred ordering when adding hidden records to the validity catalog.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 008f240: the server handler now serves Model.catalog(), which applies the same preferFree ordering as available() — the only difference is hidden records are included — so default-selection policy (local.tsx taking the first entry) is unchanged when nothing is hidden.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Apply exact-name reveal before automatic visibility filtering
In the app picker, a hidden model that is older than six months or superseded within its family cannot be revealed even by its exact full reference. allModels() has already filtered it through model.visible(), whose default policy in packages/app/src/providers/models/models.tsx excludes those models unless explicitly marked visible. Consequently, this new exact-name predicate never sees them. Evaluate exact hidden-model matches against the provider-filtered catalog before applying automatic visibility filtering, so revealing a configured hidden model does not require first enabling it in Manage Models.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3697aaa: the picker controller now keeps a provider-filtered catalog list ahead of visibility filtering, and exact hidden-model matches are evaluated against it; non-hidden models still require model.visible() plus the fuzzy match, and the no-search list is unchanged.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Use the execution catalog for route-sizing alias precedence
When a session selects a hidden route whose full reference also names an alias to a non-route model, execution now correctly gives the real route precedence, but the route-sizing preflight still calls model.available() in SessionContext.load at lines 210–214. That preflight instead follows the alias, decides the selection is not a route, and calls resolveModel(selection.session) without requestTokens. The actual hidden route therefore executes without filtering targets by their context ceilings, potentially selecting an undersized target despite a fitting alternative. Update the preflight existence predicate to use the same execution catalog as this resolution call.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3697aaa: the route-sizing preflight in SessionContext.load builds its alias existence predicate from model.catalog() — the same execution catalog the resolution call now uses — so a hidden route keeps precedence and takes the sized path with requestTokens.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Filter hidden models from the unpaid model picker
When an unpaid app user configures an OpenCode free model with hidden: true, the unpaid model picker still displays it without any search. packages/app/src/composer/composer.tsx opens DialogSelectModelUnpaid for this flow, and its freeModels memo in packages/app/src/providers/models/unpaid.tsx filters model.list() only by provider and cost before rendering every result. Since this endpoint now includes hidden records, filtering only the regular selector leaves this separate picker outside the hidden-model behavior. Exclude hidden entries from the unpaid picker's default list while retaining them in the validity catalog.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3697aaa: the unpaid picker's freeModels memo now excludes hidden records; hidden free models remain in the served catalog for validity but are not listed in DialogSelectModelUnpaid.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve provider-display-name matches through fuzzy filtering
When a hidden model is searched using the accepted providerName/modelName form, the subsequent fuzzy filter can still remove it. The new reference key fixes providerID/modelID searches, but it contains neither the provider's display name nor the model's display name. For example, a provider named Custom Provider with ID custom and a model named Pooled with ID internal-v1 passes the hidden-model predicate for Custom Provider/Pooled, but none of title, category, or reference matches that query, leaving the picker empty. Include the qualified display name among the search keys or preserve exact matches without re-filtering them.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3b1417b: TUI picker options now also carry their qualified display name (providerName/modelName) and the fuzzysort stage searches it alongside title, category, and the providerID/modelID reference, so every exact-name form the hidden filter admits survives the fuzzy stage.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Preserve hidden-model metadata for execution-time prompt hooks
When an enabled hidden model has a display name different from its ID, hiding it now changes its execution-time system prompts. packages/core/src/plugin/host.ts still implements ctx.model.list() using models.available(), while the built-in identity hook in packages/core/src/plugin/identity.ts looks up the executing model through that API. Hidden selections therefore fall back to Model.Info.default, which substitutes the model ID for its configured name; the Meta prompt hook in packages/core/src/plugin/optimize.ts likewise substitutes that fallback name into {{MODEL_NAME}}. These hooks run for normal context, compaction, and generation, so the server catalog fix does not preserve their behavior. Give execution-time hooks access to the enabled-including-hidden catalog instead of treating an executing hidden model as unknown.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3b1417b: the plugin host's ctx.model.list() now serves models.catalog() (enabled incl. hidden) — it is an execution-time metadata surface that prompt hooks (identity, optimize) look the executing model up in, not a picker.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Filter hidden models from ACP model-selection options
For users connecting through ACP, enabled hidden models still appear in the model picker without an exact-name search. packages/cli/src/acp/catalog.ts reads this endpoint and filters only on enabled, and configOptions() in packages/cli/src/acp/config-option.ts maps every catalog model directly into the model select's options. Those options are returned when creating or loading sessions and published on catalog changes, so filtering the app and TUI selectors does not cover this client. Keep hidden models in the ACP catalog for selection validation, but exclude them from the advertised picker options.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 3b1417b: ACP configOptions excludes hidden models from the advertised options (the current selection is kept so the select can display it), and the ACP catalog's implicit default now skips hidden models. Hidden records stay in the ACP catalog for validation, as they do server-side.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Exclude hidden models from implicit client defaults
When no model is configured and there are no recent selections, both clients can automatically select a hidden model without an exact-name search. The TUI takes models()?.[0] in packages/tui/src/context/local.tsx:204, and the app takes the first provider model in packages/app/src/providers/models/selection.tsx:188–195; both now consume this hidden-inclusive catalog without filtering their implicit fallback. For example, hiding the newest model (or the preferred big-pickle free model) leaves it selected automatically even though it disappears from the picker. Keep hidden records in the validity catalog, but update these implicit-default consumers to choose a non-hidden entry, consistently with Core's default selection and the ACP fallback.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in the follow-up commit just pushed: both implicit-default consumers now prefer the first non-hidden catalog entry — the TUI local fallback (models().find(!hidden)) and the app selection defaultModel (first non-hidden provider model) — consistent with Core's default selection and the ACP fallback. Hidden records remain in the validity catalog for configured/recent/explicit selections, which are checked before these fallbacks.
The test sorts the catalog IDs before comparing them. models.catalog() is documented to return models in the picker's preferred-free order. This fixture's provider is not opencode, so preferFree returns the release-ordered input unchanged. The sorted assertion would still pass if the catalog order were reversed. Comparing against the enabled subset of all checks that order without depending on the release timestamps.

membership: compare the catalog IDs directly with the IDs from the enabled
entries in all, preserving their existing order instead of sorting the catalog
IDs.
Add a picker-level test for exact-name reveal of hidden models.
Add a picker-level test for exact-name reveal of hidden models.
The new isExactModelName rows test the helper only. They do not test models(search) in select-dialog.tsx. If the picker stopped passing hidden catalog entries to the exact-name check, or began filtering them out, these rows would still pass. No inspected test covers that path.
Add a test at the picker boundary, either a unit test of the model selector controller or an e2e test in the existing model-selection suite. The test should type a hidden model's full name and expect that model in the results. It should also type a partial name and expect that model to stay absent. Use a fixture with hidden: true. Do not add test-only exports or seams to production code.

Skip hidden-only providers when choosing the implicit default.
defaultModel takes values[0] when a provider has no visible model. That hidden model is returned before the loop reaches the next connected provider. A new session can therefore use a hidden model even when a later connected provider offers a visible one. The comment at selection.tsx:190-191 says hidden models are only explicit selections, and the PR states that implicit defaults omit hidden models. Keep the fallback inside the loop, but only accept a non-hidden model there. Then decide separately what an all-hidden provider should contribute.

The picker's entries memo lists every model except deprecated ones. The server's model.list now returns hidden models, so they appear in ordinary results. Skip hidden entries unless the search equals the model's full name, as the app and TUI dialog do. Keep the unfiltered providers data for modelInfo and variant lookups.
