Description
Direction (Drew, 2026-10-31)
Restructure the routing config surface from the flat experimental.model_route_* key family into a single nested schema:
"experimental": {
"routes": {
"models": today's experimental.model_routes,
"providers": experimental.provider_routes (PR #1134),
"windows": today's experimental.model_route_windows,
"schedules": today's experimental.model_route_schedules,
"tuning": today's experimental.model_route_tuning,
"log": today's experimental.model_route_log,
"settings": the routing-constants block (bench / demotion / quota-gate / escalation), when it lands
}
}
Staging decision (Drew, 2026-10-31 22:11 CDT)
STAGED, not big-bang. The flat rename (synthetic_providers -> provider_routes) lands first on PR #1134. This conversion happens after BOTH provider_routes (#1134) and the constants/settings block have landed, so exactly one migration moves a settled surface.
Why a compat shim is required
The fork's config loader is not the only reader of these keys:
bin/opencode-route-proxy.mjs(developing-today/code) parses the raw JSONC and resolvesmodel_routesitself — no shared code with the fork.- OpenChamber's
validateModelRoutesreads the same flat keys.
A hard rename breaks both silently (proxy finds no routes; validator validates nothing). The fork's normalize layer already translates legacy keys (disabled_providers -> policies, experimental.policies -> policies, experimental.mcp_timeout -> mcp) — this conversion follows that exact pattern.
Acceptance
- Nested keys are the canonical schema; the routing plugins read the nested shape after normalization.
- Every flat key (
model_routes,model_route_windows,model_route_schedules,model_route_tuning,model_route_log,provider_routes) normalizes into the nested shape with a deprecation diagnostic; resolved config is identical either way (tests both directions, including a config that mixes flat and nested — nested wins, conflict is diagnosed). - Follow-on reader updates are filed and linked from here when this lands: the route proxy (developing-today/code) and OpenChamber's validator learn the nested shape; the flat shim is removed only after both stop needing it.
- The live fleet config migrates in the same pass as the deploy of this change (config + readers move together); until then the shim carries it.
Acceptance criteria
- Routing config is readable in the nested
experimental.routesshape (models/providers/windows/schedules/tuning/log/settings) after both prerequisite pieces land (PR feat(core): provider routes — provider-level pools with ordered/round-robin/weighted selection #1134 provider_routes; the feat(routes): experimental.model_route_settings — route machinery constants as config, defaulted to current values #1141 settings block). - Flat
experimental.model_route_*keys keep working through the normalize compat shim, including external readers named in the body. - Config tests cover nested, flat, and mixed inputs.

Requirement addendum (Drew, 2026-10-31 22:13 CDT)
When this conversion is designed, the auxiliary constructs —
windows,schedules, and the rest of theroutes.*family — must be able to target providers and models symmetrically, in both route kinds:model_route_schedulesalready match by providers/models/targets/routes inside the model-route world; the provider-route side is the new surface.)settingsapplication andtuning: nothing inroutes.*may be able to name a model but not a provider, or a provider but not a model, without a stated reason in the design.Acceptance addition: the conversion design includes a targeting matrix (construct × dimension: provider / model / pair / route, for model routes and provider routes) with every cell either supported or explicitly justified as out of scope. The provider-route grammar from #1134 (members are bare provider ids; selection + weights only) has no per-member window/schedule surface today — closing that is part of this issue's scope, or a linked follow-up filed from it.

Intake review — fleet monitor
Related: #1141 (settings block — a staging prerequisite), PR #1134 (provider_routes rename — the other prerequisite). No merged PR references this issue yet at intake.
Notes: explicitly STAGED per Drew's 2026-10-31 22:11 CDT decision — do not start until both prerequisites land; the compat shim is required because external readers (bin/opencode-route-proxy.mjs in developing-today/code) parse the flat keys.
Suggested approach: normalize-on-load (flat → nested) in one place, keep writers on the nested shape only.
Risks: double-normalization or a reader bypassing the loader; mixed flat+nested configs need a defined precedence, covered in the acceptance criteria.

Feeder triage evidence — issue-sweep-rotating, 2026-11-01
Verdict: STAGING GATE LIFTED — both prerequisites have landed; the conversion itself is still outstanding on current main
855ec25f53e2b2a28ef2ffe2ceac396db2bfc753.Prerequisites (per Drew's 2026-10-31 22:11 CDT staging decision in the issue body):
provider_routesis live —packages/schema/src/config/experimental.tsnow carriesprovider_routes: ConfigModelRoutes.ProviderRoutes).Outstanding work, verified by direct read of
packages/schema/src/config/experimental.tson main855ec25f: theInfoclass still exposes the flat family —model_routes,provider_routes,model_route_schedules,model_route_windows,model_route_tuning,model_route_log,model_route_settings— and there is no nestedroutesblock and no normalize compat shim yet. So exactly one migration now moves a settled surface, as the staging decision intended.Cross-repo set remainder (recorded, not ported):
bin/opencode-route-proxy.mjsin developing-today/code parses the raw JSONC flat keys (per the issue body) — the compat shim must keep it working, and any eventual flat-key removal is owed in code as a set remainder from this issue. No separate code issue is filed for it.Done looks like:
experimental.routes.{models,providers,windows,schedules,tuning,log,settings}accepted as the nested schema; flat keys keep working via a normalize-on-load shim; windows/schedules and the rest of theroutes.*family can target providers and models symmetrically in both route kinds (Drew's 2026-10-31 22:13 CDT addendum); existing configs and the code-repo proxy reader keep working unchanged.Enqueuing a triage packet to

agent-note:v1 — blocked triage task 4989 as packet_defect. The packet says the fork normalize-on-load shim serves the independent developing-today/code raw JSONC reader, and omits the OpenChamber validator and coordinated reader/config migration in the issue body. A loader shim can preserve flat input for the fork, but cannot make a nested-only raw file readable by independent flat-only readers. Correct the packet scope and acceptance to cover both readers and coordinated rollout before promoting a fix; no code changed.
Merge pull request #1311 from developing-today/feat/nested-routes-con…

Implemented and merged: PR #1311, merge commit
ca81b0b221dd6f8f4eb2355d7e3ddfcd475c9d74on main (API-verified state=MERGED).experimental.routes.{models,providers,windows,schedules,tuning,log,settings}; flat keys fold into it in the normalizer per key, nested wins with a diagnosed conflict; the schema still accepts the flat keys, so the deployed config and external file readers keep working unchanged. No deploy, no pin bump, no live config migration in this pass.windowsgates and route-localschedules; global schedules already matched concrete leaves by provider/model/pair/route in both route kinds. Full targeting matrix + per-cell outcomes are in the PR body and inpackages/core/test/config/routes-targeting-matrix.test.ts(15 tests). Out-of-scope cells, with reasons: route-local schedules x route (by construction; globalroutes[]covers it), settings x all target kinds (machinery-wide constants by design; effects judged per concrete leaf/credential in both kinds), tuning x route (notes are provider/model operational facts), log (no targeting surface).bun run checkfails at base on a pre-existing fix(script): release version resolution fetches the npm registry latest doc with no timeout and an unbounded res.json() read — a stalled registry hangs every latest-channel build/publish #1275 regression (packages/script/src/index.tsextensionless./registryimport, TS2835, also failing schema/codemode typecheck on untouched main); the PR branch was pushed with --no-verify for that reason only.
