fix(sdk): refresh stale quorum keys instead of banning every node - #5286
PastaPastaPasta wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
The wasm trusted context prefetches quorum keys once and cannot refetch a missing one inside the synchronous get_quorum_public_key. After a quorum rotation every proof failed with InvalidQuorum, which is retryable, so each request banned node after node until the address pool was empty and all requests failed with 'no available addresses to use' until the page was reloaded. Add SdkBuilder::with_quorum_refresher. Fetch, FetchMany and the state-transition wait path now refresh the provider's quorum keys on a missing-quorum proof (one coalesced refresh for concurrent misses) and ask again. A key still missing after that fails the request without banning a node. wasm-sdk registers the trusted context's refresh_quorum_caches as the hook. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A node is never banned for naming an unknown quorum, so a node that keeps doing so could cost a refresh on every request it serves once the previous refresh had finished. Misses within REFRESH_COOLDOWN of a refresh now get its result. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ok panics
The 10 s reuse window was measured on the wall clock, so a clock change
could stretch the reuse of a stale refresh or cut the window short. Use
web-time's Instant, which is monotonic on native and wasm32 alike.
A hook that panicked while building its future escaped refresh(), since
only polling the returned future was inside catch_unwind. Both now become
Err("quorum refresh panicked").

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Verified the supplied findings against head 4c88d84 and the PR's focused diff. The refresh preserves proof verification, but its terminal unknown-quorum classification introduces a failover regression; under the supplied severity policy, this availability issue and the concurrency and coverage improvements are non-consensus suggestions. This was a static review: the supplied CI snapshot shows Rust workspace, WASM/evo-sdk, Swift, and Kotlin checks passing, with the main test suite and one browser suite still running.

In `packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk/quorum_refresh.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk/quorum_refresh.rs:144-152: Preserve bounded failover for attacker-controlled unknown quorum hashes
An unknown quorum does not establish that alternative endpoints will return the same quorum. In verify_tenderdash_signature, the endpoint-supplied proof.quorum_hash is looked up before the BLS signature is checked, so a malicious endpoint can forward an otherwise valid GroveDB response with an arbitrary 32-byte quorum hash and trigger this branch without a signing key. When both attempts encounter such responses, converting the second failure to Error::ContextProviderError makes can_retry() false: sync::retry stops even with retry budget remaining, and update_address_ban_status neither bans nor evicts the responding endpoint. Two consecutive malicious endpoints can therefore fail a request despite healthy alternatives; with an active-set size of one, a malicious active endpoint prevents failover to healthy standbys until ordinary rotation replaces it. Preserve bounded retries to distinct endpoints without health-banning nodes for potentially stale client keys, using per-request exclusion or non-punitive rotation eviction. Add coverage with fabricated unknown-quorum responses followed by a healthy endpoint. This is an availability regression, not a proof-acceptance or consensus bypass.
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk/quorum_refresh.rs:61-78: User hook is invoked while holding the coalescing Mutex
self.start() invokes the host-supplied QuorumRefreshFn synchronously while the latest Mutex guard is held. Although the registered WASM hook is cheap, the public callback type does not constrain its synchronous prefix: blocking host work stalls all refresh callers, and synchronous re-entry or host-lock inversion can deadlock on this non-reentrant mutex. Publish a lazy shared future under the lock and defer invoking the hook until that future is polled after the guard is released, retaining panic handling for both callback construction and execution. Simply constructing competing hook futures outside the lock is not sufficient: the WASM hook calls spawn_local during construction, so discarded futures can still launch duplicate refreshes.
In `packages/wasm-sdk/src/context_provider.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/wasm-sdk/src/context_provider.rs:416-421: Exercise the wasm-only refresh bridge in a browser test
The new quorum_refresher_loads_a_quorum_newer_than_the_prefetch test uses a native TCP server and #[tokio::test], so it exercises the non-wasm into_send implementation rather than this spawn_local/oneshot bridge. The native test verifies provider refresh behavior, but it does not verify the target-specific scheduling and result delivery that browser recovery depends on. Add an async wasm_bindgen_test that passes a genuinely non-Send future, such as one capturing Rc<Cell<_>>, suspends before completion, and verifies that both Ok and Err reach the awaiting caller. This covers the new browser boundary without network calls; a separate mocked-endpoint test can cover hook registration end to end.
In `packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs`:
- [NITPICK] packages/rs-sdk/src/sdk.rs:1103-1105: Builder docs mention reads but the hook also covers typed writes
The documentation describes recovery only for a read's proof, but StateTransition::wait_for_outcome_with_metadata also uses with_quorum_refresh. Typed-write confirmation recovery is an explicit goal of this PR, so name both fetched proofs and state-transition outcome proofs to make the hook's coverage clear.

…he hook unlocked A proof's quorum hash is looked up before its signature is checked, so any endpoint can name a quorum that does not exist. Turning the post-refresh miss into a plain non-retryable error let two such endpoints fail a request with healthy ones left, and with an active set of one a single endpoint blocked failover. sync::retry now recognizes that error and moves the request on to endpoints that have not answered it that way, within the retry budget. Nobody is banned for it, so a stale client cache still never costs a healthy node; each such endpoint only gives up its rotation slot. AddressList::evict_all_from_rotation is the new, non-punitive way to pass over a set of addresses, standbys included; evict_from_rotation records active members only, so with an active set of one it could promote the endpoint just evicted. The refresher also published a refresh by calling the host hook while holding its coalescing mutex. It now publishes a lazy shared future that calls the hook when first polled, after the lock is released, with the same panic handling. Only that future ever calls the hook, since the wasm hook starts its fetch while building its future. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Clear the trusted-context refresher when replacing its provider.
withTrustedContext(context) installs a callback that captures context’s cache. withContextProvider(other) replaces the provider but keeps that callback. If other has a separate cache and cannot fetch the missing quorum itself, the refresh updates the wrong cache and the request can still fail within the retry budget.
Add a builder method to clear the callback, then call it when withContextProvider replaces the provider.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
At cf309f9, the refresh integration preserves proof verification and addresses the prior documentation, callback-locking, and WASM bridge coverage findings. Two non-blocking issues remain: unresolved-quorum failover can repeatedly select rejected endpoints, and the new public eviction API executes caller-provided iterators under internal locks. This was a static review; the supplied CI snapshot from 2026-10-05T15:19:17Z had Rust workspace tests queued and multiple builds in progress, and does not establish browser-test execution.

In `packages/rs-dapi-client/src/address_list.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-dapi-client/src/address_list.rs:533-535: Consume the caller-provided iterator before acquiring internal locks
The new public API converts and advances the caller-provided `IntoIterator` while holding the addresses read lock and rotation write lock. A lazy iterator can execute arbitrary caller code: an `inspect` or `map` closure that calls this list's `get_live_address()` attempts to acquire the already-held rotation write lock and deadlocks. An iterator panic also poisons rotation, making subsequent address selection panic at its lock acquisition. The current SDK caller supplies a plain HashSet iterator and is safe, but the public method accepts these re-entrant iterators without restriction. Collect the address references before acquiring either lock, then mutate rotation under the guards. Add coverage using a lazy iterator that accesses the list.

(existing thread: https://github.com/dashpay/platform/pull/5286#discussion_r4185329505)
The new marker restores non-banning retries, but distinct-endpoint progress is still not guaranteed. Each attempt independently selects an address, while this branch preserves only the second responder's address and discards `first.address`. Consequently, `sync::retry` records only the second responder. Its eviction is also a refill preference rather than a request-scoped exclusion: `get_live_address()` consumes `rotation.evicted` and re-promotes retired endpoints to fill vacancies, even when untried healthy endpoints remain active.
A concrete failure uses the SDK defaults of an active-set size of five and three retries. Let the active order be `[A, B, C, H1, H2]`, with A–C returning fabricated unknown-quorum hashes and H1–H2 healthy. The first wrapper calls A then B. Only B is recorded and evicted; refill restores it at the tail, producing `[A, C, H1, H2, B]`. Since B was last served, selection wraps to A, and the next wrapper calls A then C. Those four failed requests exhaust the budget without contacting either healthy endpoint. Without the hook, ordinary proof-error bans would remove A, B, and C and reach a healthy endpoint on the fourth request. Fabricating the hash requires no signing key because quorum lookup precedes BLS verification.
Preserve both unknown-quorum responders and enforce request-scoped exclusions while untried live endpoints remain, without changing health-ban state. Add coverage with the default multi-member active set and retry budget; the successful-failover regression currently uses an active-set size of one and does not exercise this sequence.

Superseded by #5313. This PR refreshed quorum keys at the request layer and sent the request again. #5313 moves the fix into the context provider: |
Issue being fixed or feature implemented
Browser apps built on wasm-sdk / evo-sdk stop working some time after the page loads. Every request fails with
[WASM] no available addresses to useuntil the page is reloaded. This happens on testnet as well as devnets, and mainnet uses the same code path. The cause:
WasmTrustedContext::prefetch_forbuildsTrustedHttpContextProviderwith.with_refetch_if_not_found(false). Fetching a missing key inside the synchronousContextProvider::get_quorum_public_keydeadlocks on wasm (Deadlock: futures::executor::block_on inside tokio runtime in TrustedHttpContextProvider #3432). So the quorum keys are fetched once, when the SDK is built, and never again on the read path. The only refresh isprepare_state_transition_context, and only the generic broadcast entry points (waitForResponse, broadcastAndWait, waitForAffectedState, broadcastAndWaitForAffectedState) call it.ContextProviderError::InvalidQuorum("Quorum not found in cache …"), which arrives asError::Proof(..).Error::can_retry()treats everyProof(_)as retryable, soupdate_address_ban_statusbans the node and the request moves on to the next one. That node's proof is signed by the same quorum, so it fails and is banned too. Within one burst of requests the whole address pool is banned. The client's cache was stale; no node did anything wrong. The same stale cache also breaks typed writes, and they report an accepted transition as failed.
identityCreate, identityTopUp,identityUpdate, documentCreate, documentReplace, contractPublishandcontractUpdatecall rs-sdk's*_and_wait*helpers directly, so they skipprepare_state_transition_contextand verify the result proof against the keys prefetched at connect. Once the network has moved past that prefetch, the transition executes but the call throwsQuorum not found in cache. The worst case isidentityCreate: the asset lock is already consumed, so a wallet that believes the error and retries getsIdentityAssetLockTransactionOutPointAlreadyConsumedError.Field data from the sakura devnet (forms a quorum about every 4 minutes): a trusted SDK that is never rebuilt reads fine for about 7 minutes, fails intermittently after that, and fails every read from about 14 minutes after it was built. Yappr (yap.pr), which runs evo-sdk in the browser, works around it today by rebuilding the SDK and retrying.
Native FFI uses
refetch_if_not_found = true, so it does not have the stale-cache problem. What was done?
SdkBuilder::with_quorum_refresher(QuorumRefreshFn)(new,rs-sdk/src/sdk/quorum_refresh.rs): an optional async hook that refreshes the context provider's quorum keys.Sdk::with_quorum_refreshwraps the per-attempt closures ofFetch,FetchManyandStateTransition::wait_for_outcome_with_metadata(broadcast.rs). Every typed write helper waits through that function, so writes get the same recovery as reads. When a proof names a quorum the provider does not know, it refreshes once and runs the attempt again:Sharedfuture). For 10 s after a refresh starts (on a monotonic clock), later misses reuse its result. A burst of failing reads costs one round trip to the quorum service, and a node that keeps naming unknown quorums can't trigger a refresh on every request it serves.refresh_quorum_cachesfetches the current and previous lists separately, so one of them may have delivered the key.Error::ContextProviderError(InvalidQuorum(..)), soupdate_address_ban_statusnever bans the node for it. The quorum may just be newer than the refreshed list. Or the endpoint may have named a quorum that doesn't exist: the hash is looked up before the signature is checked, so any endpoint can do that. Either way,sync::retryrecognizes this error and moves the request on to endpoints that haven't answered it that way, within the retry budget, and stops once none is left. Those endpoints are passed over with the new non-punitiveAddressList::evict_all_from_rotation. Nobody is banned, so a stale client cache never costs a healthy node, and a few endpoints naming fake quorums can't keep a request from a healthy one.retries.Err, so it can't poison the shared future.TrustedHttpContextProvider::refresh_quorum_cachesas the hook inWasmSdkBuilder::with_trusted_context. On wasm32 it is run throughspawn_local+ oneshot to meet theSendbound, the same wayrs-dapi-clientwraps its wasm transport.Without a registered hook, behaviour is unchanged.
The body changes in
fetch.rs,fetch_many.rsandbroadcast.rsonly re-indent the existing closures intosdk.with_quorum_refresh(move || async move { … }).git diff -wshows the real change.Known limit: if the quorum list service doesn't list the new quorum yet, the refreshed list still lacks the key on every endpoint. A write then fails with the unknown-quorum error, after trying the other endpoints within its retry budget, even though it landed. That is a service-side gap, reported as dashpay/quorum-list-server#16.
How Has This Been Tested?
quorum_refresh.rs:rs-dapi-clienttests:evict_all_from_rotationpasses over active and standby addresses without touching ban state, and keeps a single-address list usable.with_trusted_contextregisters loads a quorum that formed after the prefetch from a mock quorum service. A wasm32wasm_bindgen_testdrives thespawn_localbridge with a!Send(Rc) refresh that suspends on a JS promise, and checks that bothOkandErrreach the caller.cf309f9727(2026-10-05):cargo test -p dash-sdk --all-features: 383 passed, 0 failed (lib 258, mock integrationtests/main.rs112, other 13)cargo test -p wasm-sdk --lib: 144 passedcargo test -p rs-dapi-client --lib address_list: 64 passedcargo clippy -D warningsclean fordash-sdk --all-targets --all-features,rs-dapi-client --all-targets --all-features, andwasm-sdk --target wasm32-unknown-unknown, with and without--testscargo test -p wasm-sdk --target wasm32-unknown-unknown --lib -- into_sendunderwasm-bindgen-test-runner(node, LLVMclangasCC_wasm32_unknown_unknown): 1 passed. No CI workflow runs wasm32wasm_bindgen_tests yet, so CI only compile-checks it.4c88d849cc:cargo test -p dash-sdk --all-features380 passed, and full CI was green.Breaking Changes
None. The new builder method is opt-in, and SDKs without a hook behave exactly as before.
