Several checks decided that memory is device-accessible when cudaPointerGetAttributes() returns a non-null devicePointer. On systems with HMM, devicePointer is also set for pageable (unregistered) host memory once the process has accessed pageable memory from the GPU, so ordinary host buffers were classified as device memory: - check_pointer_residency returned host_and_device, so utils::memzero issued cudaMemsetAsync on host memory (for example the accum_sorted_sizes host_vector at the start of ivf_pq::build), and the PQ/VPQ encoders launched kernels directly on pageable host input. - PQ train_from_rows, expect_device_accessible_data_handle and the CAGRA benchmark wrapper used the same rule. GPU accesses to pageable memory under HMM are serviced through GPU page faults, and the memset at the start of ivf_pq::build was observed to never complete on H100 CI runners. Add cuvs::util::detail::is_device_accessible, which classifies memory by cudaPointerAttributes::type: device and managed memory are device accessible, registered host memory is when it is mapped, and pageable memory is only when the device reads it through the host page tables (cudaDevAttrPageableMemoryAccessUsesHostPageTables, i.e. ATS systems such as Grace), which keeps the previous behavior there. Use it at all four sites.

Define cuvs::neighbors::detail::is_device_accessible in src/neighbors/detail/pointer_attributes.cpp instead of the header-only cuvs/util/pointer_attributes.hpp. common.hpp declares it next to expect_device_accessible_data_handle, its only user in the public headers, and the per-device ATS attribute cache is now internal to libcuvs.

Notes for reviewers.
Problem. On H100 CI, pytest cuvs stalls in test_cagra.py, and then the cuvs_bench CAGRA/HNSW step (CUVS_CAGRA_HNSWLIB_ANN_BENCH) hangs until the job times out. This happened in 7 PR jobs plus nightly 6-hour timeouts (#2772, #2732; workstream B of #2783).
Root cause. On HMM systems (the H100 runners report Addressing Mode: HMM), once the process's GPU has accessed pageable memory, cudaPointerGetAttributes() returns devicePointer == hostPointer for ordinary pageable memory, while type stays cudaMemoryTypeUnregistered (probe). cuVS treated any non-null devicePointer as device-accessible. So utils::memzero zeroed the accum_sorted_sizes host_vector at the start of ivf_pq::build with cudaMemsetAsync on the CPU heap, and that memset sometimes never completed. With CUDA_LAUNCH_BLOCKING=1, the stuck call was cuMemsetD8Async with arguments pointing into [heap].
Fix. A single helper, cuvs::neighbors::detail::is_device_accessible(const cudaPointerAttributes&), classifies memory by type. Pageable memory counts as device-accessible only on ATS systems (cudaDevAttrPageableMemoryAccessUsesHostPageTables). The helper replaces the devicePointer test in four places, linked inline.
Evidence, and its limits. The reproducer runs pytest tests/test_product_quantizer.py tests/test_cagra.py in fresh processes on H100 (12.9.2, driver 595). Without the fix, 12/12 jobs stalled by iteration 2 (including control #2817). With the fix, 40/40 iterations were clean on 4 H100 jobs and 3/3 on a GB300 (ATS) job, and the full Python suite and the cuvs_bench tests passed (run, #2816). However, the reproducer only hangs when the product-quantizer tests run first in the same process. I could not reproduce the real CI order on demand (test_cagra.py inside the full suite, then the separate cuvs_bench process). The fix covers the code paths where the real CI runs stalled, but the trigger in real CI is inferred, not reproduced.

All callers now use this one function to decide whether memory is device-accessible. Before, each caller checked attr.devicePointer != nullptr, which under HMM is also true for pageable memory. The callers it replaces:
pointer_residency_count/check_pointer_residencyinann_utils.cuh(L57-L81)expect_device_accessible_data_handleincommon.hpp(L1116-L1136)- PQ
train_from_rowsinpq.cu(L82-L101) - the benchmark wrapper's
is_device_accessible(L73-L78)
The function is declared in the existing detail namespace of common.hpp (L1097-L1107) because expect_device_accessible_data_handle is an inline function in that public header. It is defined here and compiled into libcuvs (CMakeLists L1475), so no new public header is added.
Question for reviewers: does this classification match what you expect on Grace (ATS) systems?
- managed memory is always device-accessible;
- registered host memory is device-accessible when
devicePointeris set; - pageable (unregistered) memory is device-accessible only when
devicePointeris set and the device reportscudaDevAttrPageableMemoryAccessUsesHostPageTables.
Also, do ATS systems report a non-null devicePointer for pageable memory? If they don't, pageable inputs on Grace keep taking the host path, as they did before this PR.

The attribute is only queried for unregistered memory with a non-null devicePointer. check_pointer_residency runs on every memzero, copy_selected and IVF-PQ search call, so I cache the result per device behind a mutex rather than calling cudaDeviceGetAttribute each time.
Question for reviewers: do you want this cached per device at all? I have no measurements showing that the uncached query costs anything noticeable. The alternatives are to query cudaDeviceGetAttribute on every call (no shared state, one more runtime call per pageable pointer), or to use a fixed-size per-device array instead of a mutex-guarded unordered_map.

This is the check behind the hang. Under HMM, check_pointer_residency returned host_and_device for pageable memory. So utils::memzero (L226-L240) took the cudaMemsetAsync branch for the accum_sorted_sizes host_vector (ivf_pq_index.cu L41), which is zeroed at the start of ivf_pq::build (ivf_pq_build.cuh L1274-L1279). That is the cuMemsetD8Async on a [heap] address in the stall captures. ivf_flat::build zeroes its host vector the same way (L404-L408). The same residency result also made the VPQ encoders skip staging and run kernels directly on pageable input (need_copy_to_device in vpq_dataset.cuh, L481-L483 and L885-L887).
Side effect: on HMM systems, a pageable pointer wrapped in a device mdspan now always fails the residency check in IVF-PQ search (L918-L922). Before, the result depended on whether the process had already accessed pageable memory from the GPU.
Question for reviewers: do other call sites in cuvs or raft use the same devicePointer != nullptr rule and need to switch to this helper? I found two other direct devicePointer checks in cuVS:
cagra/add_nodes.cuh(L57-L62), which only affects a workspace-size estimate;device_matrix_view_from_host(cagra/utils.hpp L182-L187), which also checkstype, so pageable memory is still copied.
In raft, matrix::detail::sample_rows checks hostPointer before devicePointer, so it doesn't follow this rule.

Device and managed allocations still return early above, which keeps the multi-GPU case described in L1122-L1126. For host memory, a non-null devicePointer on HMM pageable memory used to be accepted. So make_device_padded_dataset_view (L1237-L1255) and make_device_standard_dataset_view (L1307-L1318) could build a device view over pageable memory. That case now hits the RAFT_EXPECTS with the caller's message. Mapped pinned memory and ATS pageable memory are still accepted.

Under HMM, a pageable src_ptr used to get a non-null devicePointer, so VPQ training took the device branch: raft::copy_matrix from pageable memory for strided input, or a device view directly over pageable memory (L102-L116). Pageable input now takes the host branch (L95-L101), which subsamples for training and streams encoding in bounded batches. Device, managed and mapped pinned memory still take the device branch. This is reached through make_vpq_dataset (pq.hpp L296-L330), for example from the C API's cuvsDatasetMakePQ (cagra.cpp L530-L544).

The hanging cuvs_bench CAGRA/HNSW step runs through this function. Under the old rule, an HMM pageable dataset gave dataset_is_on_host = false in build (L300) and in set_search_dataset (L548). So cagra::build received the host pointer wrapped as a device mdspan (L313-L320) instead of taking the host build path (L302-L312). Results for device, managed and mapped pinned memory are unchanged.

Document the pageable-HMM migration for the public device-view factories.
make_device_padded_dataset_view and make_device_standard_dataset_view now reject pageable HMM memory that the previous devicePointer != nullptr check accepted. Add the required deprecation warning and Fern migration documentation. State that callers should use the corresponding host view when supported, or copy the data to device memory before creating a device view.
The owning make_device_padded_dataset copy path is separate and should not be documented as affected.

raft has memory_type.hpp which already had is_device_accessible which I believe already implements this as it reports that device memory is either device, managed, or host pinned.
We should fix this in raft, and make sure cuVS uses the proper fundamental types instead of managing two instances of the same changes

Several cuVS checks treated memory as device-accessible whenever
cudaPointerGetAttributes()returned a non-nulldevicePointer. On systems where the GPU can access pageable memory through HMM (for example the H100 CI runners,Addressing Mode: HMM), the CUDA 12.9 runtime reportsdevicePointer == hostPointerfor ordinary pageable host memory. A CI probe confirmed this for every freshmallocbuffer, touched or untouched, withtypestillcudaMemoryTypeUnregistered. That misclassifies host buffers as device memory:check_pointer_residency(ann_utils.cuh) returnedhost_and_devicefor pageable memory.
