don't use __ as a prefix for variables in registry.py #3893

We have variables named __<name> in registry.py. The double underscore prefix prevents these variables from being imported externally, which is very tedious when e.g. you are a developer trying to inspect the contents of one of those variables. We should use a single underscore (_) instead of a double underscore (__) as the prefix for these variable names.
