Fixes #4532

Problem

ChatStream wired span cleanup into __exit__ and __del__ only, so when an application reads part of a streamed chat completion and then calls stream.close() (sync) or await stream.close() (async), the LLM span was not ended. It stayed open until the stream object was garbage-collected:

  • wrong span durations (span ends when the object happens to be released, not when the call finished)
  • spans held open indefinitely while the stream is referenced
  • spans dropped entirely at interpreter shutdown

Changes

  • ChatStream.close() now runs the idempotent _ensure_cleanup() (which ends the span and records partial metrics) before delegating to the wrapped stream's close(). For an async wrapped stream it returns a coroutine the caller awaits (await stream.close()); sync streams close inline.
  • ChatStream.__aexit__ now runs _ensure_cleanup() like the sync __exit__ already did (it previously skipped cleanup entirely).
  • New regression tests in packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_chat_stream_close.py: sync close, async close, idempotency, close-after-full-consumption, sync __exit__, async __aexit__.

Small, additive, non-breaking: cleanup is idempotent, and underlying close() errors still propagate to the caller as before.

Test evidence

  • Bug reproduced first with a mock-based script (0 finished spans after close() in both sync and async cases); passes after the fix (1 finished span each).

  • New tests: 6/6 pass; 4 of the 6 fail on the unpatched code (the other 2 pin pre-existing __exit__/full-consumption behavior).

  • Existing suite: test_semconv_compliance.py (34 tests, exercises ChatStream paths) all pass with the change; ruff check clean on both touched files. (test_chat.py VCR tests error identically on the pristine tree in this sandbox — environmental, unrelated.)

  • I have added tests that cover my changes.

  • Screenshots from an observability platform — n/a (behavioral timing fix, verified with mock-based tests).

  • PR name follows conventional commits format.

  • Documentation update — n/a.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • OpenAI chat stream traces now finish correctly when streams are closed synchronously or asynchronously.
    • Traces are finalized when leaving a stream context manager, even if cleanup encounters an error.
    • Closing an already-consumed or previously closed stream no longer leaves its trace unfinished.
    • Stream closure is handled whether or not the underlying stream provides a close method.

📝 Walkthrough

ChatStream now runs cleanup during synchronous and asynchronous close operations and asynchronous context-manager exit. The wrapped stream’s close methods are called when available. Tests cover delegation and span completion.

Changes: ChatStream lifecycle cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stream cleanup and regression coverage
packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/opentelemetry/instrumentation/openai/shared/chat_wrappers.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-openai/tests/traces/test_chat_stream_close.py
ChatStream.close() and ChatStream.aclose() run cleanup and delegate to the wrapped stream when the corresponding method is available. __aexit__ runs cleanup before delegation, logs cleanup errors, and returns the wrapped result. Tests cover close delegation, span completion, repeated close, completed streams, and context-manager exits.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9b2d2

With OpenAI SDK 2.x, awaiting ChatStream.aclose() on a partially consumed stream can end the span without releasing the HTTP response. Add the close() fallback before merging so callers can release that resource.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9b2d2

Normal close paths improve cleanup. However, the added asynchronous close API can finish tracing without releasing a wrapped stream whose closing method has a different name. Compatibility with supported client versions remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: For a wrapped stream that exposes close but not aclose, the newly added ChatStream.aclose ends telemetry and returns normally without invoking the available resource-closing method. This can leave an underlying response open despite apparent completion, weakening resource containment in the consuming application. Concrete reachability across supported OpenAI SDK versions remains unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified failure-containment risk concerns instrumented streaming responses and resources held by their consuming application. Whether repeated incomplete closures affect a shared connection pool, tenant isolation, or service availability is not established by the available dependency evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — ChatStream manages telemetry state while delegating transport closure to the wrapped object. The changed methods add no caller identity, authorization, credential, or network-destination handling; the material boundary is coordination between telemetry completion and the wrapped resource owner.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define successful asynchronous closure as delegation to an available resource-closing operation, rather than telemetry completion alone. Verify that contract against supported SDK method shapes, including close-only streams and interrupted cleanup.

Thanks for the quick fix! I'm the reporter of #4532. I tested this branch independently with a mock-transport harness and found one remaining gap.

close() is fixed, but aclose() is not. OpenAI SDK 3.x added AsyncStream.aclose() (not present in 2.x). On this branch with openai==3.22.1, await stream.aclose() still bypasses ChatStream, so the span stays open until the object is garbage-collected.

Spans ended while the app still holds the stream (async, openai 3.22.1):

await close() await aclose()

asyncio.run(main())

Suggested fix: also define aclose on ChatStream (calling _ensure_cleanup() and awaiting the wrapped aclose()), guarded with hasattr so it stays compatible with SDK 2.x. A regression test for aclose() under SDK 3.x would cover it.

Environment: this branch, openai 3.22.1, opentelemetry-sdk 1.45.0, Python 3.12.

OpenAI SDK 3.x added AsyncStream.aclose(); the wrapt proxy defined only
close(), so await stream.aclose() delegated straight to the wrapped stream
and the LLM span stayed open until GC. Add an async aclose() that runs the
idempotent _ensure_cleanup() first, then delegates to the wrapped stream's
aclose when present (getattr guard keeps it safe on SDK 2.x).

Regression tests: aclose ends the span on an SDK 3.x-shaped stream, and
still ends the span when the wrapped stream has no aclose (2.x).

Good catch — confirmed and fixed. ChatStream now defines an async aclose() that runs the idempotent _ensure_cleanup() first, then delegates to the wrapped stream's aclose when present.

Details:

  • Verified against openai==3.22.1: AsyncStream.aclose exists and is a coroutine function; sync Stream has no aclose.
  • The delegation is guarded with getattr(..., "aclose", None), so SDK 2.x async streams (no aclose) still get span cleanup and just skip the delegate call — and a non-coroutine aclose is called inline, mirroring close()'s dispatch.
  • Two regression tests added to tests/traces/test_chat_stream_close.py: aclose() ends the span on an SDK 3.x-shaped stream, and still ends the span when the wrapped stream has no aclose (2.x). Both fail on the pre-fix code.
  • Full file suite now 8/8, plus test_semconv_compliance.py 34/34; ruff check clean.

Pushed to this PR's branch (fork commit a49dee92, tree verified identical to local). Thanks for testing the branch — much appreciated.

Do not return from finally.

dont_throw catches Exception, but it does not catch BaseException subclasses such as KeyboardInterrupt. If such an exception escapes _ensure_cleanup(), the return in finally can suppress it. Python 3.14 also warns about this construct.

Re: CodeRabbit's review comment "Do not return from finally" (chat_wrappers.py:754-759, minor) — valid catch, applied. ChatStream.close() now assigns the delegated result inside finally and returns it afterwards, so a BaseException (e.g. KeyboardInterrupt) escaping _ensure_cleanup() is no longer swallowed. Includes a regression test asserting the delegated close's return value is preserved and finally-path semantics are unchanged. Pushed to this branch (remote commit 902bff7f).

Fall back to close() when aclose() is unavailable.

When the wrapped stream has no aclose(), ChatStream.aclose() runs span cleanup but does not close the wrapped stream. OpenAI SDK 2.0.0 AsyncStream.close() awaits response.aclose(), so this path can leave the HTTP response open. Fall back to the wrapped close() and await it when it is asynchronous. Add a delegation assertion for an SDK 2.x-shaped stream.

Fall back to close() when aclose() is unavailable.

When wrapped_aclose is absent, ChatStream.aclose() ends the span but does not close the wrapped async stream. OpenAI SDK 2.0.0 and 2.9.0 provide AsyncStream.close() to call response.aclose(), but do not provide aclose(). (raw.githubusercontent.com)

This can leave the response and connection open when callers use await stream.aclose() with an SDK 2.x stream. Delegate to the wrapped close() method when aclose() is unavailable. Await it when it is asynchronous. Add a regression assertion for this fallback.
