Summary

A test whose only data parameter is a tuple now receives the whole row when it also declares a CancellationToken, and the token receives the test's token wherever it is declared. Both modes behave the same way, and TUnit0001 accepts what the engine accepts.

Test (rows IEnumerable<(int, int)> or [Arguments]) Before: source-gen Before: reflection After
Generic_Trailing_Token<T>((T, T) pair, CancellationToken token) InvalidCastException (Int32 → ValueTuple) ArgumentException (Int32 → ValueTuple) passes in both
Generic_Leading_Token<T>(CancellationToken token, (T, T) pair) same same passes in both
NonGeneric_Trailing_Token((int, int) pair, CancellationToken token) passes ArgumentException passes in both
NonGeneric_Leading_Token(CancellationToken token, (int, int) pair) InvalidCastException (Int32 → CancellationToken) ArgumentException passes in both
NonGeneric_Middle_Token_Spreads_Row(int, CancellationToken, string) Expected exactly 3 arguments, but got 2 passes passes in both
NonGeneric_Leading_Token_With_Arguments(CancellationToken, int, string) Expected exactly 3 arguments, but got 2 passes passes in both
NonGeneric_Token_Before_Params(int count = 42, CancellationToken token = default, params int[] values) (#7147 repro) token is default passes passes in both

Before this change, TUnit0001 also reported every leading- or middle-token method above.

Behaviour change

A CancellationToken parameter on a test method that is not the last parameter now always receives the test's token. Before this change, in source-gen mode it could receive a value from the data row. Code that passed a token through [Arguments] or a data source into a leading or middle CancellationToken parameter will now get the test's token instead. This matches reflection mode, which already behaved this way. Constructor and data-source method tokens are unchanged: a non-trailing token there still takes data.

Cause

  • Engine (both modes): DataUnwrapper.UnwrapWithTypesInternal only kept a tuple row whole when the method had exactly one parameter. A CancellationToken counted as a parameter, so the tuple was spread across (pair, token). DataGeneratorMetadataCreator also removed only a trailing token from the members that data sources generate for.
  • Source generator, non-generic methods: ParseInvokerParameters removed only a trailing token. A token declared anywhere else was treated as a data parameter and received a row value. The single-tuple invoker also always passed the token last.
  • Source generator, generic methods: the closed-generic positional path cast args[0] to the tuple. Rows reach it as spread elements, so the cast failed.
  • Analyzer: WithoutCancellationTokenParameter removed only a trailing token.

Fix

  • DataUnwrapper and DataGeneratorMetadataCreator skip CancellationToken parameters wherever they are declared. This matches TestGenericTypeResolver and ReflectionTestMetadata, which already did. When there is no token, nothing extra is allocated.
  • ParseInvokerParameters removes every CancellationToken parameter, wherever it is declared. AddCancellationTokenArguments puts the test's token back at each declared position, and a new FormatSingleArgumentCall does the same for the single-tuple invoker. The reflection invoker also passes the token at every token position.
  • TryGetClosedParametersWithTrailingArray is now TryGetClosedParametersForSharedBinder. It also routes closed generic methods whose single data parameter is a tuple through the shared binder, which accepts either the whole tuple or its spread elements.
  • WithoutCancellationTokenParameter (analyzers) removes tokens at any position.

This also fixes #7147: a non-generic token declared before a params array now receives the test token in source-gen mode.

Tests

  • New tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7173/TupleParameterWithCancellationTokenTests.cs (15 tests, [EngineTest(ExpectedResult.Pass)]). On main: source-gen 5/6 failed (the 2 Source generator: CancellationToken declared before a params array on a non-generic test does not receive the test token #7147 cases and the multi-token and review edge cases were added later), reflection 4/6 failed. With the fix: 15/15 pass in source-gen and in --reflection.
  • New tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7173Tests.cs: passes locally; its AOT leg runs only in CI.
  • New analyzer test Method_Data_Source_Is_Not_Flagged_When_CancellationToken_Is_Not_Trailing. Full TUnit.Analyzers.Tests: 867 total, 0 failed.
  • TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests: 192 passed, 1 skipped, 0 failed. No snapshot changed.
  • TUnit.UnitTests: 608 passed, 4 skipped, 0 failed.
  • TestProject regression filters, in both source-gen and --reflection, all green: MethodDataSourceDrivenWithCancellationTokenTests, TupleUnwrappingTests, NestedTupleDataSourceTests, NestedTupleTest, SimpleTupleTest, TupleDataSourceDrivenTests, EnumerableTupleDataSourceDrivenTests, ClassTupleDataSourceDrivenTests, Bugs._7092, Bugs._7099, TestExecutorCancellationTokenTests, ParamsArgumentsTests, OptionalArgumentsTests, ArgsAsArrayTests, GenericMethodTests, AsyncMethodDataSourceDrivenTests, Bugs._6161, Bugs._2798.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved test execution for methods with multiple CancellationToken parameters.
    • Tokens are now supplied correctly in leading, middle, or trailing positions.
    • Improved handling of tuple data, arrays, optional parameters, params parameters, and generic test methods.
    • Data-source validation no longer incorrectly flags valid methods with non-trailing or multiple cancellation tokens.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for cancellation-token binding across analyzers, generated and reflection-based execution, tuple data, and parameter arrays.

…le parameter whole

A test whose only data parameter is a tuple, plus a CancellationToken, had its
row spread across the parameters in reflection mode, and a non-trailing token
on a non-generic method was treated as a data parameter in source-gen mode.
TUnit0001 also rejected non-trailing tokens.

- DataUnwrapper and DataGeneratorMetadataCreator ignore CancellationToken
  parameters wherever they are declared when matching a row to parameters.
- The source generator strips a non-trailing token on non-generic methods
  and puts it back at its declared position, including for single-tuple
  parameters; closed generic methods with a single tuple parameter use the
  shared binder, which accepts the whole tuple or its spread elements.
- WithoutCancellationTokenParameter removes tokens at any position.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements for [#7147] and [#7173]. DataUnwrapper excludes engine-supplied CancellationToken parameters when it binds tuple rows, so one tuple data parameter remains whole. ReflectionTestMetadata inserts the test token at every declared token position, including before params. The source generator and reflection paths use the same token and data-parameter rules for generic, non-generic, spread-row, and multiple-token cases. WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens removes tokens at any test-method position, so TUnit0001 matches the engine behavior. The added tests cover the linked scenarios in both execution modes.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the scope of [#7147] and [#7173]. Engine, reflection, source-generator, analyzer, and test changes directly implement token injection and tuple-row binding. Generic inference, params, optional arguments, and multiple-token coverage support these same binding rules. The code preserves separate trailing-token handling for constructors and data-source methods. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed evidence.

Summary

The PR keeps a single tuple data parameter whole and supplies the test's CancellationToken at every declared token position.

  • Test methods get their execution token at every declared token position.
  • A single tuple data parameter receives the whole tuple row.
  • Generic inference and data checks skip test-method token parameters.

…keep constructor tokens as data

Data generation drops every CancellationToken parameter of a test method,
but the invokers supplied only one token: the non-generic source-generated
invoker kept extra tokens as data parameters, and the reflection invoker
inserted only the first. A test with several tokens therefore got missing
arguments. Both invokers now pass the token at every declared position,
including after a trailing array, and the generic shared binder no longer
falls back to the positional path for several tokens.

The analyzer now removes tokens anywhere only for test-method parameters.
Constructors and data source methods keep skipping only a trailing token,
because a constructor's token takes a row value.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude injected CancellationToken parameters from generic type inference.

The generator matches row values and tuple elements against raw method-parameter indexes. A leading token therefore consumes the first row position, so M(CancellationToken token, T value) with [Arguments(1)] skips the only row value and fails to infer T. The method-data-source inference paths have the same positional shift. This can omit the generated generic test instance.

🐛 Suggested fix
         var argumentValues = argAttr.ConstructorArguments[0].Values;
-        var methodParams = methodSymbol.Parameters;
+        var methodParams = methodSymbol.Parameters
+            .Where(p => !p.Type.IsCancellationToken())
+            .ToArray();

         // For each value in the params array
         for (var argIndex = 0; argIndex < argumentValues.Length && argIndex < methodParams.Length; argIndex++)
         {
             var methodParam = methodParams[argIndex];
             var argValue = argumentValues[argIndex];

- // Skip if this is a CancellationToken parameter
-            if (methodParam.Type.Name == "CancellationToken")
-            {
-                continue;
-            }

Apply the same filtered parameter list when mapping tuple elements in both method-data-source inference methods. Use that filtered list for the single-data-type branch as well:

         var classTypeParams = testMethod.TypeSymbol.TypeParameters;
         var genericParamMap = new Dictionary<string, ITypeSymbol>();
+        var testMethodParams = testMethod.MethodSymbol.Parameters
+            .Where(p => !p.Type.IsCancellationToken())
+            .ToArray();

         // If it's a tuple, map tuple elements to method parameters
         if (dataType.IsTupleType)
         {
             var tupleElements = dataType.TupleElements;
-            var testMethodParams = testMethod.MethodSymbol.Parameters;

             for (var i = 0; i < testMethodParams.Length && i < tupleElements.Length; i++)
             {
                 var paramType = testMethodParams[i].Type;
                 var tupleElementType = tupleElements[i].Type;
@@
         }
         // If it's a single type that matches a class type parameter
-        else if (testMethod.MethodSymbol.Parameters.Length == 1)
+        else if (testMethodParams.Length == 1)
         {
-            var paramType = testMethod.MethodSymbol.Parameters[0].Type;
+            var paramType = testMethodParams[0].Type;

Review of #7185

I read the diff but did not build the PR or run its tests, so the points below come from reading the code.

What it does well

  • Both modes now follow one rule: a CancellationToken parameter takes the test's token wherever it is declared and never takes row data. That rule is applied in the source generator (ParseInvokerParameters), in the reflection collector and invoker, in DataGeneratorMetadataCreator, and in the analyzers. This matches the repo constraint that both metadata paths behave identically.
  • The analyzer split is sensible. WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens removes every token for test methods, and the old trailing-only helper stays for constructors and data-source methods, where a token elsewhere does take data. The doc comments say why.
  • Replacing GetLeadingCancellationTokenIndex and the duplicated insert-or-add branches with AddCancellationTokenArguments removes repetition. FormatSingleArgumentCall does the same for the single-tuple call paths.
  • The PR table shows before and after for each signature, which makes the change easy to check.

Suggestions

  1. Duplicated token-placement logic. ReflectionTestMetadata now builds isToken, trailingTokenCount and dataParameterCount and has two merge loops. The ReflectionTestDataCollector params-collection code and the DataUnwrapper tuple logic work out similar token and data counts again. A single shared helper (for example a small struct computed once per method from ParameterMetadata[], exposing token positions, data count and trailing-token count) would keep the invoker, the collector and the unwrapper from drifting apart, and the source generator could mirror it. The condition i < isToken.Length && isToken[i] && i < parameters.Length - trailingTokenCount in the more-values-than-parameters branch is hard to read, so a named helper would help there.
  2. Per-invocation work in the invoker. The isToken array and the counts are computed once outside the delegate, which is good. The delegate still allocates a new argsWithToken array on every call, so a test with a token pays that cost each time. The old code did the same, so this is not a regression. It may be worth a benchmark, since the project treats this as a hot path.
  3. Edge-case tests. Besides the cases in the table, I would like to see tests for the following. Multiple tokens in one signature, such as (CancellationToken a, int x, CancellationToken b) with a tuple row. An optional parameter combined with a leading token and a tuple. A generic method with a tuple, a middle token and params. The PR touches all of these paths but I could not tell whether each has a test.
  4. Behavior change. A non-trailing CancellationToken that used to take row data now takes the test's token. This is probably the intended behavior and it matches reflection mode. It could still break someone who passed a token through [Arguments], so a release-note line would help.

Overall this looks correct and is a clear improvement. The items above are about maintainability and test coverage and should not block the merge.

Dispositions for the github-actions review (07:29):

  1. Edge-case tests. Signature by signature:
    • Several tokens around data or a tuple: already covered in TupleParameterWithCancellationTokenTests by NonGeneric_Tokens_Around_Data(CancellationToken, int, CancellationToken) with [Arguments(7)], NonGeneric_Tokens_Around_Tuple(CancellationToken, (int, int), CancellationToken) and Generic_Tokens_Around_Tuple<T>(...) with tuple rows. In 41e90c8 I added NonGeneric_Tokens_Interleaved_With_Spread_Row(CancellationToken, int, CancellationToken, string), where an (int, string) tuple row is spread between two tokens.
    • Generic method with a tuple, a middle token and params: added Generic_Tuple_Middle_Token_Params<T>((T, T) pair, CancellationToken token, params int[] values) with ((int, int), int[]) rows in 41e90c8.
    • Optional parameter with a leading token and a tuple: not supported in either mode, and not because of the token. With an (int, int) row source, TUnit0001 rejects (CancellationToken, (int, int) pair, int extra = 5) at compile time, because a tuple row is kept whole only when the tuple is the only data parameter. With an object[] row [(25, 26)], both modes spread the tuple and fail with a cast error. The same happens without any token. I filed this as A tuple parameter followed by an optional parameter is spread instead of bound whole #7212 rather than widening this PR.
    • All 15 tests in Bugs._7173 pass in source-gen and --reflection (net10.0). Issue7173Tests was updated to 15 and passes in reflection mode. Its AOT leg runs in CI.
  2. Behaviour change / release note: the PR description now has a "Behaviour change" section. It says that a non-trailing CancellationToken on a test method now always receives the test's token instead of row data, which matches reflection mode, and that constructor and data-source method tokens are unchanged. I also corrected the stale "several tokens keep the trailing-only behaviour" line in the Fix section, which 8e67e7c had superseded.
  3. Shared token-layout helper: declined for this PR. The three sites work on different inputs: ParameterMetadata[] in the invoker, ParameterInfo[] in the reflection collector, and row values plus types in DataUnwrapper. The source generator works on Roslyn symbols, so it could only mirror such a helper, not share it. A common struct would mean refactoring three engine files that are on the hot path, with no behaviour change, in a PR that is already a cross-mode bug fix. Both modes now give the same results for every signature in the test class, and those tests are the guard against drift. This would fit better as a follow-up refactor.
  4. argsWithToken allocation per invocation: declined, as the review notes. This is not a regression: the old invoker allocated the same array, and it is only allocated for tests that declare a token. A benchmark of an unchanged allocation would not inform this PR.

Review of #7185

I read the diff in src/ and did not run the tests, so this is a read-through only. I found no blocking issues.

What I checked

  • Consistency across modes. The source generator (ParseInvokerParameters, AddCancellationTokenArguments), the reflection path (ReflectionTestMetadata, ReflectionTestDataCollector) and DataUnwrapper now all treat every CancellationToken parameter as engine-supplied. This matches the repo rule that metadata collection must behave identically in both modes.
  • Analyzers. TUnit0001 now uses WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens, so it accepts the same signatures the engine accepts. Constructors and data-source methods keep the trailing-only rule, and the new doc comments say so.
  • Generator cleanup. AddCancellationTokenArguments replaces GetLeadingCancellationTokenIndex and the two copies of the insert-or-append logic. The declared-type check (OriginalDefinition) still keeps a closed T = CancellationToken as a data parameter.
  • Single-tuple handling. TryGetClosedParametersForSharedBinder sends a lone tuple parameter to the shared binder only when the closed type is a tuple. That gate is correct.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. Reflection invoker readability. The argsWithToken fill loop in ReflectionTestMetadata is hard to follow. It has a compound condition (i < isToken.Length && isToken[i] && i < parameters.Length - trailingTokenCount) and a separate valuesEnd calculation. The token positions are fixed per method, so you could precompute a Func<object?[], CancellationToken, object?[]> binder once, outside the per-invocation lambda. That would make the hot path allocation-light, which the repo asks for, and easier to unit test. At minimum, drop the redundant i < isToken.Length guards.
  2. Per-invocation allocation. new bool[...] is created once per metadata, which is fine. The argsWithToken array is allocated on every invocation, but the old code did the same, so it is not a regression.
  3. Behaviour change. A leading or middle token that used to receive a data-row value now gets the test's token. The PR description calls this out. It would help to add it to the release notes or docs as well, because it is a silent change for anyone passing a token through [Arguments].

Tests
Coverage looks good: the Issue7173Tests engine test, the TupleParameterWithCancellationTokenTests test project, the analyzer tests and the Tests7099 snapshot update. Please confirm the .verified.txt changes are intentional and that no .received.txt files are committed.

Overall this is a solid fix that removes a source-gen/reflection divergence.

  • It fixes the cause in each place. The engine (DataUnwrapper, DataGeneratorMetadataCreator), the generator (ParseInvokerParameters, closed-generic binding) and the analyzer now share one rule: a test-method CancellationToken takes no row data, wherever it is declared.
  • Constructors and data-source methods keep the trailing-only rule. The analyzer keeps WithoutCancellationTokenParameter for those and adds WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens for test methods, so the intent is explicit.
  • AddCancellationTokenArguments replaces the separate leading and trailing token logic in several places, which simplifies the generator.
  • FilterOutCancellationToken is allocation-free when there is no token, which suits the hot path. Both callers are on the TestParameters path, so the constructor and data-source behaviour is unchanged.
  • The PR description documents the behaviour change (a non-trailing token no longer takes row data in source-gen mode) and gives a before/after table.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. IsCancellationToken is implemented separately in the analyzer, in TUnit.Core (parameter.Type == typeof(CancellationToken)) and in the generator. The three copies could drift. A short comment tying them together, or a shared helper where the assembly boundaries allow it, would help.
  2. The behaviour change is breaking for anyone who passed a token through [Arguments] into a leading or middle parameter. Consider a release-note entry, and possibly an analyzer diagnostic that flags [Arguments] or data-source values supplied for a non-trailing token parameter.
  3. TryGetClosedParametersForSharedBinder now also returns null on a non-tuple single parameter via the late IsTupleType check. Folding that condition into the early guard would make the control flow easier to follow.

Nothing here blocks merge, provided the snapshot tests (.verified.txt) and the analyzer tests pass in both modes.

Review of #7185

I read the diff and the DataUnwrapper change in pr-head/. I did not build the PR or run its tests. The skill-based review failed to start, so this is a manual read-through. I found no blocking issues.

What looks good

  • One rule now applies everywhere: a test-method CancellationToken parameter takes the test's token and never takes row data, wherever it is declared. That covers the generator, the reflection collector and invoker, DataGeneratorMetadataCreator, DataUnwrapper and the analyzers. This matches the repo constraint that both metadata modes behave identically.
  • Constructors and data-source methods keep the trailing-only rule, so the change stays scoped to test methods.
  • The tests cover leading, middle and trailing tokens, tuple rows, generic methods and the Source generator: CancellationToken declared before a params array on a non-generic test does not receive the test token #7147 repro in both modes. The behaviour change is documented in the PR description.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. In DataUnwrapper.UnwrapWithTypesInternal, the loop that counts data parameters and the loop that builds paramTypes are repeated for every row. paramTypes is a new array each time. Both depend only on expectedParameters, which is the same for every row of a test. Compute them once, for example on ReflectionTestMetadata or in a small cached struct, and pass them in. That fits the repo's rule to cache reflection and avoid allocations in data-generation hot paths.
  2. The check Type != typeof(CancellationToken) now appears in several places across the engine, the generator and the analyzers. A shared helper, such as the analyzer extension WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens and an engine-side equivalent, would stop the rule drifting between modes. The later-summarised bot findings, such as the CodeRabbit note about excluding injected tokens from generic type inference in TestMetadataGenerator, are the same kind of drift risk. Please confirm that one is dispositioned.

Overall this is a solid, consistent fix.

Comment thread src/TUnit.Engine/Helpers/DataUnwrapper.cs Outdated
…ference (#7173)

- DataUnwrapper: a tuple row keeps every element when the last data parameter is an
  array, so (1, 2, 3) binds rest = [2, 3] for (int, CancellationToken, params int[]).
  Only tuple rows pay for the parameter scan, and no per-row Type[] is allocated.
- Source generator and reflection: class and method generic type inference maps row
  values and tuple elements to data parameters only, so a leading or interleaved
  CancellationToken no longer shifts them.
- Regression tests for both, in both modes.

Dispositions for the review items that have no inline thread. All fixes are in 5628b67.

CodeRabbit, outside-diff item (TestMetadataGenerator.cs, CancellationToken in generic type inference): confirmed and fixed. In source-gen mode, [Arguments(1)] on M(CancellationToken token, T value) in a generic class produced no test. A tuple row (1, "one") for M(CancellationToken, T, string) inferred T = string and failed. The argument loop, both method-data-source inference paths, the single-data-type branch and the [Arguments(null)] branch now use one GetDataParameters helper, which ParseInvokerParameters also uses. Reflection mode had the same positional shift in InferClassTypeArgumentsFromMethodRow, which now skips token parameters. New tests in Bugs/_7173/GenericInferenceWithCancellationTokenTests.cs pass in both modes. They fail without the fix: 2 failures in source-gen, 1 in reflection. Inferring class type arguments from a method-level [MethodDataSource] is not covered because reflection mode does not support it at all, token or not. That gap is filed as #7224.

github-actions review, suggestion 1 (per-row work in DataUnwrapper): addressed. Rows that are not a single tuple now return before the parameter scan. The tuple path no longer builds a Type[]. It unwraps once and copies only when it must cap extra elements.

github-actions review, suggestion 2 (shared helper): partly addressed. The generator now has one GetDataParameters helper. A helper shared by the engine and the generator is not possible, because one works on Type and the other on ITypeSymbol.

Review of #7185

I read the analyzer, source generator, DataGeneratorMetadataCreator and reflection-collector changes. I read the ReflectionTestMetadata hunk only partway, and I did not read DataUnwrapper or the tests. I did not build or run anything. The diff looks correct for the cases in the table, and I found no blocking issues.

What looks good

  • One rule now covers all four places: a CancellationToken parameter on a test method takes no row data, wherever it is declared. The analyzer, ParseInvokerParameters, DataGeneratorMetadataCreator, DataUnwrapper and the reflection invoker now agree.
  • GetDataParameters and AddCancellationTokenArguments replace the separate leading-token and trailing-token code paths, which is simpler than before.
  • Checking OriginalDefinition.Type keeps a closed T = CancellationToken as a data parameter.
  • FilterOutCancellationToken returns the original array when there is no token, so the common case allocates nothing extra.
  • The analyzer keeps the old WithoutCancellationTokenParameter for constructors and data-source methods, and adds WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens for tests. The doc comments explain the split.

Points to consider

  1. Behaviour change. A leading or middle CancellationToken in source-gen mode used to receive a row value and now receives the test's token. This is documented in the PR and matches reflection mode. It is still a silent change for anyone passing a token through [Arguments]. I suggest a release-notes line, and optionally an analyzer warning when a CancellationToken is passed as an [Arguments] value to a non-trailing token parameter.
  2. Test and constructor asymmetry. For tests the token is skipped at any position. For constructors and data-source methods only a trailing token is skipped. The PR documents this, but a single helper taking a 'trailing-only' flag would keep the two rules in one place instead of two similarly named extension methods.
  3. ReflectionTestMetadata allocation. It now builds a bool[] of token positions per metadata instance. This is minor and happens once at discovery, not per invocation. A precomputed int[] of token indices would avoid the per-parameter flag array.
  4. Tests. The PR table lists the NonGeneric_Token_Before_Params (Source generator: CancellationToken declared before a params array on a non-generic test does not receive the test token #7147) case. Please confirm there is a test with CancellationToken as a closed generic data type, plus one with two token parameters in reflection mode. The while loop in ReflectionTestDataCollector is the part I would test most.

Overall this is a good unification and I'd approve it. Per the repo rules, please make sure the TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests snapshots (only Tests7099 changed) and TUnit.Analyzers.Tests pass in CI.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the data parameters to InferTypesFromMethodDataSource, as the generator now does.

This PR changed the generator's InferTypesFromMethodDataSource (TestMetadataGenerator.cs lines 6928-6930) to use GetDataParameters. That change excludes CancellationToken parameters before it maps tuple elements to parameters. The reflection mirror still receives the full parameters array. Its mapping loop at lines 1605-1608 therefore pairs tuple element i with declared parameter i.

Consider a generic method with [GenerateGenericTest] and a [MethodDataSource] that returns IEnumerable<Func<(int, string)>>, declared as Test<T>(CancellationToken token, T value, string name):

  • Source-generated mode infers T = int. It produces one instantiation that runs every source.
  • Reflection mode maps int to token and string to T. It infers T = string and creates Test<string> scoped to that source. Those rows then fail to cast 1 to string. The [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(int))] instantiation also runs.

The two modes then report different test counts and outcomes. The [Arguments] branch at line 1423 already builds dataParameters. Reuse that array here.

Proposed fix
         foreach (var dataSource in dataSources)
         {
             if (dataSource is MethodDataSourceAttribute methodDataSource)
             {
-                AddInstantiation(InferTypesFromMethodDataSource(testClass, methodDataSource, parameters, genericParameterCount), methodDataSource);
+                dataParameters ??= Array.FindAll(parameters, static parameter => parameter.ParameterType != typeof(CancellationToken));
+                AddInstantiation(InferTypesFromMethodDataSource(testClass, methodDataSource, dataParameters, genericParameterCount), methodDataSource);
             }
         }

The _7173 tests do not cover this case. Func_Tuple_Row_Leading_Token has no [GenerateGenericTest], so reflection mode never reaches this path for it.

… generic inference (#7173)

Reflection mode matched [MethodDataSource] tuple elements against every
declared parameter, so a leading token shifted inference and produced a
wrong instantiation. It now passes the data parameters, as the source
generator's GetDataParameters does. Adds regression tests for that case and
for a type parameter closed over CancellationToken, which stays a data
parameter in both modes, and simplifies the token check in the reflection
invoker.

Dispositions for the review items posted after my 16:59 comment, and for earlier summary-review items that had no reply yet. The fix is in 5b710b8.

CodeRabbit 17:07, outside-diff item (ReflectionTestDataCollector.cs:1446, pass the data parameters to InferTypesFromMethodDataSource): confirmed and fixed. With [GenerateGenericTest(typeof(int))] and a [MethodDataSource] returning IEnumerable<Func<(int, string)>> on Test<T>(CancellationToken token, T value, string name), reflection mode inferred T = string and added a failing Test<string> instance (24 tests, 1 failure, against 23 in source-gen mode). The branch now reuses the token-free dataParameters array that the [Arguments] branch builds. The new test Func_Tuple_Row_Leading_Token_With_Generic_Test failed in reflection mode before the fix and now passes in both modes. Issue7173Tests expects 23 tests.

github-actions 17:00

  1. Release note: the PR description has a "Behaviour change" section that can be copied into the release notes.
  2. One helper with a trailing-only flag: declined. The two names make each call site say which rule it applies (test method versus constructor or data-source method). A boolean argument would hide that.
  3. int[] of token indices instead of bool[]: declined. The array is built once per test metadata at discovery, not per invocation, and the invoker indexes it by parameter position, which a bool[] does directly.
  4. Tests: added ClosedGenericCancellationTokenDataTests, where T is closed over CancellationToken. That parameter takes the row value and the declared token takes the test's token, in both modes. Two tokens are covered by NonGeneric_Two_Tokens_No_Data, NonGeneric_Tokens_Around_Data, NonGeneric_Tokens_Around_Tuple and Generic_Tokens_Around_Tuple. The trailing-token while loop in ReflectionTestDataCollector is covered by NonGeneric_Array_Before_Two_Tokens and Wrapped_Tuple_Params_Trailing_Token. All 23 tests in Bugs._7173 pass in source-gen and --reflection mode (net10.0).

github-actions 09:03

  1. Invoker readability: partly addressed. The redundant i < isToken.Length guard is gone. The index where trailing tokens start is now computed once outside the delegate and named trailingTokensStart. I did not move to a precomputed binder delegate, because the token layout is already computed once per metadata and the per-call array is the same allocation the old code made.
  2. Per-invocation allocation: agreed that it is not a regression. No change.
  3. Release note: see above.

github-actions 10:00

  1. Shared IsCancellationToken: not possible across the assembly boundaries. The analyzer and the generator work on ITypeSymbol, and TUnit.Core works on Type. Inside the generator, the data-parameter rule is now in one GetDataParameters helper.
  2. Analyzer diagnostic for a value passed to a non-trailing token: not needed as a new rule. TestDataAnalyzer now checks test-method [Arguments] against the data parameters only, so a row that still carries a value for a token parameter fails the existing argument-count check at compile time. A CancellationToken also cannot be written as an attribute constant.
  3. Folding the IsTupleType check into the early guard in TryGetClosedParametersForSharedBinder: declined. The check has to run on the closed parameter type. A lone T value closed over a tuple type is only known to be a tuple after the method is constructed, so the early guard cannot decide it.

Review of #7185 (CancellationToken wherever declared / tuple row binding)

I read the PR's own diff in the core, source generator, analyzer and engine files. I did not build the PR or run any tests. The gh pr diff commit is based on an older main than the workspace root, so I judged only the PR's own changes.

Overall: The change is sound. It makes both modes follow one rule: CancellationToken parameters never take a row value, and the engine supplies them wherever they are declared.

What I checked:

  • Rule applied consistently: DataGeneratorMetadataCreator.FilterOutCancellationToken now removes all token parameters. The source generator uses the new GetDataParameters helper in each inference path, and ReflectionTestDataCollector skips tokens when it infers types. ReflectionTestMetadata now inserts tokens at each declared position. This closes the old split where source-gen and reflection disagreed.
  • DataUnwrapper: Only a single tuple value is spread now, and a lone tuple-typed data parameter keeps the whole row. That fixes ((T,T) pair, CancellationToken). Reflection's params handling and extra-element capping both look right.
  • Analyzers and tests: TUnit0001 now accepts what the engine accepts. The tests cover leading, middle and trailing tokens in both modes, plus the Source generator: CancellationToken declared before a params array on a non-generic test does not receive the test token #7147 repro.

Suggestions (non-blocking):

  1. Shared "data parameters" helper. The "skip CancellationToken" rule now appears in at least four places: Core, the generator, the analyzers and the engine. Each uses a slightly different shape (Type == typeof(CancellationToken), IsCancellationToken(), Name == ...). Keeping them in step depends on convention. A short comment in each place pointing to the others would stop them drifting apart, or Core could expose one helper for the runtime paths.
  2. Allocation in ReflectionTestMetadata. The isToken bool array and the trailing-token scan run once per test metadata creation, which is fine. The invoker closure allocates a new argsWithToken array per invocation. That matches the previous behaviour, so I'd leave it alone.
  3. Behaviour change. A leading or middle CancellationToken parameter now always gets the test's token, where before source-gen could pass a row value into it. The PR description calls this out. A release-note or docs line would help anyone who passed a token through [Arguments].

I found no blocking issues.

Dispositions for the github-actions review at 17:53, as of 4a6cb31.

  1. The "skip CancellationToken" rule is copied in several places. Changed in 4a6cb31. TUnit0001 (ParameterExtensions.WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens), the generator (TestMetadataGenerator.GetDataParameters) and the runtime (DataGeneratorMetadataCreator.FilterOutCancellationToken) now each have a remark that names every other copy of the rule, including DataUnwrapper, ReflectionTestMetadata and ReflectionTestDataCollector. One shared helper cannot cover all of them. The analyzer and the generator work on Roslyn symbols, while Core and the engine work on Type and ParameterMetadata. The two sides also check for CancellationToken differently, which is why the review saw different shapes. TupleParameterWithCancellationTokenTests and GenericInferenceWithCancellationTokenTests run the same signatures in both modes, so if one copy drifts, a test fails.
  2. The argsWithToken allocation in ReflectionTestMetadata. No change. As the review says, this matches the previous behaviour.
  3. Release note for the behaviour change. No code change. Release notes are written by hand when the release is cut, and this one will mention that a leading or middle CancellationToken now always receives the test's token.

Review of #7185 (manual read of the diff across all 6 commits; I did not build or run the tests, and the code-review skill failed to start).

Overall: the approach is sound. The tuple and CancellationToken fix is aligned across the analyzer, the source generator, DataUnwrapper and DataGeneratorMetadataCreator. The PR description and behaviour-change note are clear, and the test project covers leading, middle, trailing, generic, closed-generic and params cases.

Concerns and suggestions

  1. The same rule is implemented in at least five places. "A token anywhere is engine-supplied, so it is excluded from data binding" now lives in WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens, ParseInvokerParameters, TryGetClosedParametersForSharedBinder, DataGeneratorMetadataCreator.FilterOutCancellationToken and the counting loop in DataUnwrapper. The next change to this rule has to touch all of them, and a miss brings back a source-gen and reflection divergence, which AGENTS.md requires to stay identical. I suggest one shared helper for the runtime side in TUnit.Core and one on IMethodSymbol for the generator, with a single table-driven test of signatures.

  2. Constructors and data-source methods still skip only a trailing token. The second commit keeps WithoutCancellationTokenParameter trailing-only for them on purpose. The two similarly named helpers are an easy trap. Please confirm every FilterOutCancellationToken call site that handles class or constructor parameters is scoped to test methods, since the generic-type gate only covers DataGeneratorType.TestParameters. A test with a non-trailing constructor token would lock this in.

  3. Behaviour change. In source-gen mode a non-trailing CancellationToken used to be able to take row data, and it now always gets the test's token. This matches reflection mode and is documented. It is still a silent semantic change, so I suggest a release-notes line. The analyzer would also accept an Arguments value passed for such a token without warning.

  4. Multiple tokens. ParseInvokerParameters originally special-cased tokenCount > 1, and later commits changed that to pass the token at every position. Please check that the generated code and the reflection invoker agree for (CancellationToken a, int x, CancellationToken b). I could not find a test for it among the files in this PR.

  5. Snapshots. Tests7099.Test.verified.txt changed and looks intentional. Please confirm no .received.txt files are committed.

  6. Performance. DataUnwrapper now makes an extra pass over the parameters, and allocates paramTypes whether or not a token is present. A no-token fast path, like the one in FilterOutCancellationToken, would keep that hot path allocation-neutral.

No blocking issues found. I'd like items 1 and 2 addressed or answered, and a multi-token test added if one doesn't already exist.
