ci: quarantine nine flaky python suites into a non-blocking job - #6162
Conversation
Nine suites failed in `python standalone tests` and then passed on a rerun of the same commit at least twice between 2026-10-26 and 2026-11-02, on pull requests that did not touch them. Each now has a tracked issue. tests/python-quarantine.txt lists `<path> <issue url>`; scripts/select-quarantined-suites.sh drops those suites from every gating leg before load-sensitive and cost selection, and a new `python quarantined tests (non-blocking)` job runs them on every CI run and reports each outcome. An entry with no issue url, listed twice, or naming an undiscovered suite stops every leg (exit 3). The partition pin now asserts the gated suites run once and the quarantined ones in no gating leg. Approving at 8eefe91. The bar is sound: a suite qualifies only if it failed and then passed on the same commit at least twice, on PRs that didn't touch it, with no fix landed since. Each of the nine has its own tracking issue. select-quarantined-suites.sh makes the list hard to misuse: an entry without a sonichi/sutando issue URL, a duplicate, or a path that isn't discovered exits 3 and stops every leg. It filters before load-sensitive and cost sharding, so no gating leg runs a quarantined suite. The partition test pins that, plus both drift cases. The new job runs all nine on every CI run with a 240 s ABRT timeout and writes a step-summary line per suite, and it's kept out of required-tests.
Non-blocking:
tests/ack-claim-lock-cleanup.test.pyfailed 14 times in 13 runs across 10 PRs, case d ("once the publisher is done, cleanup removes the lock"). That's frequent enough to be a real race in the lock cleanup, not just in the test. Please triage #6152 as a possible product bug, not only a flaky test.- These suites no longer feed the coverage the gating legs measure, so a PR touching their code (the ack-claim lock, the sparrow adapters, the runtime API) can lose diff coverage, or lose the only test that would have caught it. It's worth a line in docs/testing-coverage.md.
- Nothing ages entries out. A dated review line, or a weekly count of quarantine failures, would stop the list from becoming permanent.

Review requested: #6163 at 444b35c. Follow-up after #6162 merged: fix real #6152 cleanup race and restore ack-claim-lock-cleanup to blocking CI. Invariant: shared directory lock must remain held until publisher key lock is released. Deterministic production-path test fails before and passes after; claim tests and 1326-suite CI partition pass. Please review exact head; do not merge. |

Review at 8eefe915075af06888992350f85992f336909600. This is an agent-assisted review, posted as a COMMENT because this login authored the PR. Verdict: no gate is removed or weakened beyond the nine listed suites. Notes below: one missing test case and three suites worth a closer look.
Only the nine leave the gating legs, each with evidence
- I checked every entry in
tests/python-quarantine.txtagainst its issue's cited runs. Each has at least two pairs where the job log showsFAILED:/TIMED OUT:for that exact file on attempt N, followed by a later attempt that succeeded on the same SHA:- ack-claim-lock-cleanup #6152 (4 checked of 14 cited)
- ag2-sparrow-hatch-adapter #6153 (3)
- ag2-sparrow-claude-code-adapter #6154 (3)
- hermetic-env-sentinels-hatch-adapter #6155 (2)
- runtime-api-e2e #6156 (2)
- runtime-api-task-engagement #6157 (2)
- browser-persistent #6158 (2)
- ag2-sparrow-cloud-session-interlock #6159 (2)
- start-cli-private-socket-foreign-core #6160 (2 runs, one of which failed twice before passing)
- Wording nit: #6154 says the failure is "not the timeout … an assertion", but 2 of its 3 cited failures are
TIMED OUT (>240s), with the assertion visible before the hang.
Every other suite still runs in exactly one gating leg
.github/workflows/ci.yml:496-498filters discovery throughselect-quarantined-suites.sh withoutbefore any leg branching. The matrix (15 shards,ci.yml:440) andSHARED_LEGS=13are unchanged.tests/python-ci-legs-partition.test.py:gated = disc - quarantined;- the cross-leg duplicate check is unchanged;
missingis nowset(gated) - set(every)(line 139);- a new
leakedcheck fails if a quarantined suite appears in any leg (lines 142-144).
- Run locally: 1325 gated + 9 quarantined = 1334 discovered.
The nine still run, non-blocking
python-quarantined-tests(ci.yml:590-633) runsselect … onlyon the same list. It ran exactly the nine on this head, all passing.- A suite failure is a
::warning::and the step exits 0. The job is not inrequired-tests.needs(ci.yml:694), the ruleset's required contexts, orcoverage-gate.needs.
A malformed list fails every leg
scripts/select-quarantined-suites.sh:9-15exits 3 on a missing or non-issue URL, a duplicate, or a path that isn't discovered. It runs before the per-leg branch underbash -e, so every leg stops.- The partition test proves exit 3 in all 15 legs for a stale path and for an entry without a URL.
- Missing case (non-blocking): there is no test for a duplicate entry. I checked by hand that the selector exits 3 ("quarantined twice"), but a third
qdriftedcase would pin it.
Diff coverage
- The nine now contribute no coverage: only the gating legs run
coverage run. I compared the base push run with this PR's run. The largest losses:adapters/hatch/cli.py(784/1266 lines)hatch/keepalive.py(416/820)claude_code/launcher.py(315/516)claude_code/inbox.py(299/453)task_hold.py(209/264)src/losses are small.
- This doesn't let untested code through.
.coveragercsetssource=, so those modules stay incoverage.xmland the lost lines count as uncovered: a change there fails diff coverage (a false red) rather than passing untested. - What is actually lost is correctness gating: the three sparrow suites are still gated by
sparrow-publish-gate, but the other six (ack-claim, runtime-api e2e and task-engagement, browser-persistent, start-cli, hermetic) gate nothing while quarantined.
Flaky or real
- Look flaky:
- hatch and hermetic: keepawake generation-roll timing;
- runtime-api-e2e: wait window;
- task-engagement: daemon SIGKILLed (
-9 != 0); - browser-persistent: 30 s
launchPersistentContexttimeout; - start-cli:
TemporaryDirectory"Directory not empty", likely a lingering child process.
- Worth a look before they sit in quarantine:
- ack-claim-lock-cleanup: "cleanup removes the lock ([[]], 1 open(s))". The lock is left with an open handle, which could be a real cleanup race.
- claude-code-adapter: the settled-record count is not 1, and two runs hung past 240 s. That could be a duplicate or missing settle under concurrency.
- cloud-session-interlock
test_a_live_legacy_pid_refuses_and_explains: the holder('racer', 7741)was published before the expected refusal. That could be an interlock ordering bug.
CI: all checks pass on this head. "PowerShell + Windows runtime" is skipped because this PR doesn't touch Windows paths. The merge state is blocked only on the required review.

Reviewed 8eefe915075af06888992350f85992f336909600. Verdict: changes needed before I recommend merging, for the admission evidence of one quarantined suite. Posting as the requested COMMENT.
P2 — tests/python-quarantine.txt:6: the Claude adapter entry counts two already-fixed timeout runs toward the two-run bar. I checked actual earlier-attempt logs and later successful attempts, not only #6154's summary:
- 40426135939, attempt 1 and 40437879561, attempt 1 both report
TIMED OUT (>240s): tests/ag2-sparrow-claude-code-adapter.test.py(241 seconds). Neither is the claimed settled-record assertion failure. Both later pass on the same SHA. - Those failures precede #5943, merged October 27 at 02:57:56Z as
02e6f9ea3a479b7e4a499de0c368678c48460d6b, which splits this suite specifically to fix the 240-second timeout and closes #5940. That fix is an ancestor of this head. - The remaining cited run, 41350714305, attempt 1, does fail and later pass at the same SHA, but its actual failure is
LauncherTmux.test_a_claude_that_exits_on_exit_is_stopped_for_the_manager_uninstall_and_the_card: the pane-key guard is uncertain. The printed settled-record assertion source lines areResourceWarning: unclosed file, not failed assertions.
Thus #6154 does not substantiate two unfixed occurrences of the stated flake. Remove this entry from the quarantine for now, or supply two qualifying post-fix fail/pass runs and correct the issue/PR symptom and accounting. Otherwise the existing adapter gate loses coverage based partly on evidence for a defect already repaired—the case the PR explicitly says it excludes.
Verified mechanism and scope: the actual workflow-body partition test passes: all 1,325 non-quarantined suites run exactly once across 15 gating legs, none of the nine leak into them. Its stale/unlinked checks stop every leg with exit 3. I additionally injected a duplicate quarantine entry through the same fixture: all 15 legs exit 3 before running a suite. required-tests and the coverage threshold remain unchanged, and the sparrow publish gate remains. The new non-blocking job's actual head CI log shows all nine executed and passed. I verified two cited fail/pass runs per other listed suite (16 runs): suite-specific failure lines, identical attempt SHAs and later successful matching jobs.
Local validation: partition test; required-needs guard; all 73 CI-discovery tests; actionlint; selector shellcheck; diff review-checks all pass. Current CI checks show no failure/pending entries in the captured snapshot, including the quarantine job and Python diff coverage.
The literal claim “no gate weakened” still needs the explicit quarantine exception: these nine cease blocking standalone CI and cease contributing coverage; a green coverage check cannot prove their behavior. Worst-case user impact is an intermittent product regression escaping its former test gate, mitigated by retaining the other gates and tracked, temporary quarantine—not proven harmless by a green rerun. No production behavior changes directly. Non-blocking reporting nit: the serial job's 20-minute overall timeout is shorter than nine 240-second per-suite limits, so multiple hangs can prevent later suites from being attempted/reported. No push or merge performed.
Priority
Level: medium
Reason: about one CI run in eight needs a rerun to go green; these suites account for a large share of those reruns.

Summary
What changed, and why
Over the last 7 days (2026-10-26 to 2026-11-02), 149 of 951
CIruns needed a rerun, and 116 of those endedsuccesson the same commit. I pulled the failed earlier attempt of every one of those 116 runs through the jobs API, took theFAILED: <file>lines from theRun Python standalone testsstep, and counted each suite.A suite is quarantined here only if all of these hold:
mainafter its last failure.Nine suites meet that bar:

Why flaky and not broken. Every listed failure happened on a commit whose rerun passed without a code change, on PRs that did not modify the suite. In most cases the same case fails across unrelated branches. Each symptom is a timing or wait-window assertion, a process kill, a launch timeout, or a cleanup race. None is a deterministic wrong value. All nine pass locally (output below).
Seen but not quarantined:

Python had no quarantine.
tests/shell-ci-known-failures.txtis for deterministic failures and says a flake must not go there. So this PR adds a minimal one:tests/python-quarantine.txt: one<path> <issue url>per line.scripts/select-quarantined-suites.sh only|without: removes those suites from discovery before the load-sensitive and cost selection, in everypython standalone testsleg. An entry with no issue url, listed twice, or naming a suite that is not discovered fails every leg with exit 3, the same contract as the load-sensitive list.python quarantined tests (non-blocking): runs the listed suites on every CI run. It emits a::warning::per failure and writes a pass/fail line per suite, with its issue, to the step summary. It is not inrequired-tests'needs, so it cannot gate.Gates kept. Every non-quarantined suite still runs in exactly one gating leg. The partition pin now asserts that, plus "no quarantined suite in a gating leg" and the exit-3 cases.
