feat(gateway): an agent asked a room question answers it once, and the gate reads only its own task [AgentActivity] - #6092

Requesting changes at exact head 7796418958a52703107bc20632bd998c1ef4af61. I ran the required review preflight and the four focused suites. Here is my complete blocker list, with a fix for each.
-
P1 —
room_questionbypasses secret redaction (remote_gateway_bridge.py:5640-5673,5706-5709;task_attempts.py:1363-1369). Onlytask["task"]is filtered; the question is serialized raw afterward. With the same synthetic GitHub token in body and prompt, exact head producedsecret_in_body_line=False,secret_in_question_line=True,secret_count=1. That persists the secret and puts it in model context. Fix: deep-filter every persisted question string with the shared policy; if filtering changes a routing/identity field, reject/withhold the question. Merge detected types into the existing notice and add whole-file absence tests for every nested field. -
P1 — ambiguous journal state becomes permission to answer again (
src/agent_turn.py:353-383, plus the vendored copy). Every non-succeededoutcome is put infailed, sodispatched_unknown, null, accepted, andrunningbecomeFalse; an answer can then be re-offered after retirement. There is also a rotation race: the reader scans.1then doesread_text()/stat()on current; rotation between those calls discards the already-read answer and does not revisit.1. My deterministic schedule ended with the succeeded records in.1butverdict_during_rotation=False. Fix: classify only explicit terminal-negative statuses as failure, returnNonefor async/unknown statuses, and read under the proxy lock or retry a stable two-file snapshot. An unstable snapshot must never returnFalse. -
P1 — definitive and indeterminate observations are not durably materialized (
task_attempts.py:1094-1099,1124-1138,1163-1171). Whenanswer_rulesees a succeeded answer, it returns the answered note without writingquestions[qid].answered=True. Conversely,finish()reducesNoneto false and retires the only task record without a sticky unknown tombstone. In exact-head repros, both a late success and an unknown outcome became absent after journal rotation/loss, and a later task received the full answer rule. Fix: persistansweredon every definitive-true observation, including the fence path; persist a fail-closedunknownstate before an indeterminate attempt can retire. Re-delivery may upgrade that state only from durable evidence, never treat it as absent. -
P1 — the question bound deletes at-most-once fences (
task_attempts.py:1105-1109). Oldest-first pruning removes both answered tombstones and live offers. WithQUESTIONS_KEPT=1, A stayed open with q1, offering q2 erased q1, and C then received q1's answer rule while A still had it (task_A_still_open=True, both rules true). Fix: never evict live/indeterminate ownership or answered/unknown tombstones. Prune only proven-safe entries; if no safe victim exists, refuse the new offer withANSWER_UNRECORDED_NOTEand leave state unchanged. Pin both live-pressure and answered-redelivery cases. -
P1 — damaged nested state does not fail closed (
task_attempts.py:1088-1102).offers:nullbecomes empty, non-string entries are skipped during the journal check, malformedansweredvalues are treated as not answered, and a non-record referenced task looks closed. An unhashable offer such as[]then reachestasks.get(t)and raisesTypeError, which_commitdoes not catch. Fix: validate the complete question entry and every referenced task record before use; offers must be valid task-id strings and answer state must be one allowed value. Any damage raises_Refused, causes no mutation, and yields the withheld note rather than an exception or rule. -
P1 — terminal-task handling can leave work runnable forever (
remote_gateway_bridge.py:4676-4707). Theanswer_offeredbranch runs before queued-file withdrawal, so a confirmed or indeterminate answer can leave an untaken, broker-closed task in the inbox. For a taken task,answered_here() is not Falseclearsowed_closeeven onNone; an unreadable journal therefore creates no control task and no retry, so the core may continue external effects after the broker fenced it. Fix: withdraw an untaken file first. For taken work: exactTruerecords the answer and clears without Stop;Noneleavesowed_closedurable for retry;Falsefollows the normal Stop path. Test unrelated terminal reasons, persistent unreadability, recovery, and restart. -
P1 — local access policy does not authorize the answer action (
remote_gateway_bridge.py:5723-5738;task_attempts.py:103-110;team_guardrail.py:20-34,123-142). The bridge emits Team/Guest restrictions, then records and appends a room-state mutation instruction regardless of effective tier. A compliant restricted agent refuses it; one following the later rule crosses the local authority boundary. Existing bridge fixtures are owner-tier only. Fix: gate both offer recording and rule injection through shared tier policy: owner, plus only a narrowly documented broker-attested collaborator exception if intended. Guest and ordinary Team must neither receive the rule nor consume an offer. Test every tier/collaborator combination. -
P2 — answer evidence is correlated by task, not question (
agent_turn.py:346-383;task_attempts.py:1124-1137). The reader asks whether the task answered any room question, then marks the qid inanswer_offered. If the turn answers another eligible card, the offered card is falsely tombstoned and the actually answered card may later be answered again. The PR body confirms the journal carries task id, not question id. Fix: journal and validate a sanitizedquestion_id, correlate(task_id, question_id, operation_id), and treat legacy records without question identity as unknown. Add a wrong-question regression. -
P2 — the irreversible response can be chosen from stale question data (
task_attempts.py:103-110,1372-1377). The rule tells the agent to take the latest revision frominspect, while its reasoning prompt/options are the served snapshot; an edit between serve and execution lets it answer new revision semantics from old data. It also does not explicitly stop unless canonicalcan_answeris true. Fix: either use the served revision as the compare-and-swap fence, or require the response to be chosen solely from the canonical inspected prompt/options/constraints, aborting unless inspectedcan_answer is True.
The focused suites pass at this head (sparrow-task-attempts 65, gateway hooks 181, agent-turn 49, lifecycle 8), and CI/CLA are green; these adversarial schedules are missing. The live witness is useful for the ordinary enabled/parallel/disabled paths but explicitly could not exercise answered-card redelivery or damaged state. Flags default off, so current default installs are contained, but enabled turn-context installs can leak secrets, cross a tier boundary, continue fenced work, or issue a duplicate/wrong irreversible answer.
Non-blocking evidence cleanup: the body still mixes 64/180/47 with actual 65/181/49, calls the last commit tests-only although it changes production/docs too, and CHANGELOG-PENDING.md cites #5937 instead of replacement #6092.
…stion, and nothing safe-to-forget is ever an answer

My earlier points are addressed:
- F1:
_withdraw_closed(remote_gateway_bridge.py:4702) now checks the answer after the untaken-file loop.test_a_closed_question_task_the_core_has_not_taken_is_withdrawn_whatever_its_answer_readspinsNoneandTrue; it fails with the 7796418 source and passes here. - Revision: the rule now says to inspect first, answer only on
can_answertrue, and choose from inspect's prompt and options (task_attempts.py:105). can_answer: the localfalse-only check is documented.- Cap: 2,000 characters (
task_attempts.py:1475). - Tiers: the rule and its offer go only to owner and broker-attested collaborator tasks.
sender_tierandcollaborator_enabledcome frombroker_attested_tier/_tier_for(:5634-5638,5772), never from the body. - CHANGELOG: now cites #6092.
Redaction is deep and identity-preserving, and the sanitized copy replaces the raw one (:4717-4741).
Should fix
- Until desktop #1066 ships, an owner's cancel can be lost. The body names the dependency: without
question_idon the journaled intent, every answer reads "unknown". It calls that safe, but it isn't quite._withdraw_closed(:4702-4705) never stops a taken task that answered and is then closed, soowed_closestays set indefinitely. I probed it: an intent withoutquestion_id, succeeded, then five beats withcancelled_by_owner. There was no stop,owed_closewas still set, andanswered_here()was stillNone. So an owner who cancels a task still working after its answer is never heard by the core. Please cap the "cannot tell" wait: after N passes or T seconds, fall through to the normal stop. A stop after an answer is only ever pointless, never harmful. Alternatively, gate the feature on #1066 being present. - Live witness (REVIEW.md lesson 15): the 7796418 run predates question-id matching. Please rerun P and N2 at df2c119, with #1066, and include the journal intent line for the answer and the ledger's
questions[qid]showinganswered: true.
Nits
3. task_attempts.py:1197 / _mark_answer: a task that never sent an answer, but settles while the journal snapshot fails, marks the question "unknown" for good. I probed it: the re-delivered card gets no rule. The removed partial-line grace (agent_turn.py:408) does the same for a half-written line. Consider writing "unknown" only on an answer intent with no definite outcome, and re-checking on a failed read.
4. task_attempts.py:1428: an answered or unknown entry without expires_at is never forgotten, and past 2,000 such entries every offer is withheld. Fine if the broker always sends expires_at; worth a sentence in the doc.
5. Guest and plain-team tasks, and a question dropped by redaction, get the data line or nothing, but no "do not answer this" note. In N3 the core answered from the task text with no rule. Is that intended?
6. :5772: sender_tier == "team" and is redundant with collaborator_enabled.
Checks:
sync_from_src --checkis in sync, andreview-checks.sh --diffpasses.- In a clean env at head: attempts 70, hooks 188, agent-turn 52, lifecycle 8, all OK.
- All three unit suites fail with
src/andpackages/reverted to main, and 9 hooks tests fail with them reverted to 7796418. - CI was still running.

Approving at df2c119. The live witness at this exact head (comment above) covers what I asked for. With desktop #1066's proxy, P and N2 show the journal intent carrying question_id, and the ledger reads {"answered": true, …} for each question. N2 has one answer per card and no fence or stop for either task. N3 with the flag unset adds no data line, no rule and no ledger entry. The other points from my df2c119 review were already fixed.
The one thing I'd still change is not a blocker, since the feature is off by default. The cancel-after-answer gap exists only when REMOTE_TASK_TURN_CONTEXT=1 runs without #1066. With that combination every answer reads "unknown", and an owner's cancel of a task still working after its answer never sends a stop. Please make sure the rollout order is #1066 first, and don't enable the flag anywhere without it. A cap on the "cannot tell" wait (fall through to the normal stop after N passes) would remove the dependency entirely; it's worth a follow-up.
The nits (sticky "unknown" on a failed snapshot read, expires_at-less entries, the no-rule note for other tiers, the redundant team and) stay as follow-ups.

The design holds up: offer and decision in one ledger write, unknown read as "withhold", a one-line JSON data line that a prompt can't break out of (I probed \n, \r, U+2028/2029, U+0085, VT/FF, FS/GS/RS, ESC and ===SUTANDO SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS===: always one line, label intact), and a regex-checked question_id so the rule line can't be shaped from the question. sync_from_src --check is in sync, review-checks.sh --diff passes, CI is green, and the four touched test files pass at head (49/65/181/8) and fail with src/ and packages/ reverted to main, in a clean env.
Should fix
remote_gateway_bridge.py:4687: the newanswer_offered and answered_here() is not Falsereturn comes before the untaken-file loop, so it skips the inbox withdrawal as well as the stop. A broker-closed task the core hasn't picked up stays intasks/and runs later whenever the answer state can't be told (unreadable journal, or a torn line naming the task from an earlier run), and also when an earlier run of the same task answered and a newer run is queued. I reproduced both withanswered_in_journalpatched toNoneand toTrueand the task closed by a beat: file still queued, no stop. Moving the check after the queued loop, so it only suppresses the stop request, keeps "a closed task that hasn't been picked up is withdrawn", which main has. A test for theNonecase would pin it.
Questions / nits
2. task_attempts.py:106: the rule takes expected_revision from room.question.inspect, so the served revision never acts as the compare-and-swap value. If the question was edited after serving, the agent answers the new revision while reasoning from the stale quoted prompt. Either pass the served revision through, or tell the agent to answer from the inspect result's prompt and options.
3. task_attempts.py:1375: only a JSON false withholds the rule ("false" doesn't). target_members and expires_at aren't checked locally; fine if it's deliberate, but worth one sentence in the protocol doc.
4. task_attempts.py:1369: the data line has no size cap (a 5 MB prompt gives a 5 MB line). It matches _one_line, but a truncation is cheap.
5. remote_gateway_bridge.py:5736: the rule is given at every sender tier, after the guest/Team block, and it asks for a room write. That's the same as ask_in_room_rule, but is it intended for a guest asker?
6. CHANGELOG-PENDING.md cites [#5937]; it should be [#6092].
Live witness (REVIEW.md lesson 15): the body reports P at 5ab9774 and N2 finding the bug fixed here, but "N2, N3 and P are rerun at this head" has no result yet. Please add the rerun at 7796418 (the journal and ledger lines for N2).

Reviewed at 7796418958a52703107bc20632bd998c1ef4af61. Here is the complete list in one pass, with a fix for each. All five come from the same place: an answer whose state can't be told, or that got lost, ends up read as "not answered". Then another task gets the rule and answers a second time.
1. answered_in_journal treats an uncertain outcome as a failed one (src/agent_turn.py:380-383, and the vendored copy). Every status other than succeeded goes into failed. I probed it myself: dispatched_unknown, a missing status and running all return False, not None. The same file already treats None and dispatched_unknown as not terminal (lines 334, 389, 514). There is a second path to the same result. The partial-line grace at 370 skips a fresh, incomplete line even when it names this task, so a half-written answer intent also reads as False. Once that task retires, the next task is handed the rule.
Fix: only definitive failure statuses go into failed; anything else among ops returns None. A partial line that contains task_id returns None even inside the grace window. Add a regression for each status.
2. A settle that can't tell drops the evidence, so "unknown" decays to "absent" (task_attempts.py, finish(), about line 1163). answered = answered_here() is True records nothing when the result is None. Only the offers list is left, and it gets re-checked against the journal. The journal keeps only the live file and .1, so after two rotations the answer is gone and answered_in_journal(t) returns False. A card re-delivered after that is offered again.
Fix: when answered_here() is None at settle, record a sticky answered: "unknown" on the question in the same write, and have answer_rule withhold on it. _note_answered should also set it when an answer intent has no definitive outcome.
3. The 500-question bound evicts answered entries (task_attempts.py:1108). Eviction pops the oldest by dict insertion order, and that order includes questions already marked answered: True. A re-delivered card for an evicted question is then treated as new. Codex reproduced this with the bound set to 2, answering and settling first. Note that re-offering moves a question to the end, so an active question can push an answered one out.
Fix: evict unanswered entries first and keep answered tombstones (just the id and answered) under a separate, larger bound. Or, when an evicted question comes back, withhold rather than offer.
4. Damaged question entries can still authorize an answer (task_attempts.py:1088-1102). Only the container types are checked. offers: null becomes [], non-string offers are silently dropped from the journal check, answered: "true" is not True, and a referenced task record that isn't a dict counts as "no open task". Codex's probes with each of these got the answer rule. The PR description says a damaged entry withholds.
Fix: one validator for a question entry (offers a list of valid task ids, answered in {True, False, "unknown"} or absent) and for each referenced task record. Anything else raises _Refused.
5. A None answer state clears owed_close with no retry (remote_gateway_bridge.py:4687, _withdraw_closed). answered_here() is not False also covers None, and then owed_close is cleared. So if the server closes the task for an unrelated reason while the journal is unreadable or the answer is in flight, nothing ever stops the core and nothing retries. "No stop" is right only for a confirmed answer.
Fix: is True → clear owed_close, no stop; None → return and keep the marker for the next pass, as the _on_disk(...) is None branch just above already does; False → the normal withdraw/cancel path.
What checked out:
- The two
agent_turn.pycopies are byte-identical. - Both
result_file_decisioncall sites passself.wire, outcomes from other tasks are filtered out, androom.question.answernever rules terminal or suspended. - The question data line held up against
\n,\r, U+2028/U+2029 and control-character header injection. - The rule uses the broker id.
- Injection is gated on turn context.
- The competing-offer decision happens in the same locked
_change.
Tests at this head:
sparrow-task-attemptsandagent-turnpass, and so doesgateway-agent-activity-hooks.gateway-agent-activity-lifecycle(8) also passes; I ran it outside Codex's sandbox, because the sandbox blocks binding to localhost.- None of these suites covers findings 1–5. A mutation that set
QUESTIONS_KEPT=1was caught only incidentally, by the damaged-entry assertion.
Both flags are off by default, so nothing is exposed today. These need fixing before turn context is switched on anywhere.

Re-reviewed at df2c119dd2bc32f7d338c68e42509c0b38dbc172. Most of my first review is fixed, but one item is only half-fixed, and the new retention and identity code opened two more ways to answer twice. Here is the full list, with a fix for each.
My earlier items
- 1 (uncertain outcomes read as failed): fixed.
dispatched_unknown, a missing status, runningand a fresh partial line naming the task now all returnNone. Putting the old partial-line behaviour back makes the test fail. - 2 (a settle that can't tell drops the evidence): fixed. A sticky
"unknown"survives deleting the journal, and onlyTrueoverwrites it. - 3 (the bound evicted answered entries): fixed under ordinary pressure. New offers are refused atomically. But see B below.
- 4 (damaged entries authorise an answer): not fully fixed. See A.
- 5 (
owed_closecleared onNone): fixed. The marker survives three unknown passes and a restart. Recovering toTruerecords the answer with no stop, and recovering toFalsestops once.
Still open
A. A numeric answered passes the validator but reads as not answered (P1). task_attempts.py:1408 checks q.get("answered", False) not in (True, False, ANSWERED_UNKNOWN). Because 1 == True and 0 == False in Python, 1, 0, 1.0 and 0.0 all pass. The readers at 1099, 1101 and 1454 then test is True, so {"answered": 1} reads as not answered and the answer rule is offered again. I confirmed the membership and the is behaviour by hand, and Codex's probe got the rule back.
Fix: test the type exactly, as v is True or v is False or v == ANSWERED_UNKNOWN, with a regression test for each numeric value.
B. Late settles recreate tombstones the bound never counts (P1). An expired open offer can be evicted (1436–1456). When its task later settles, the settle writes a fresh entry with no expires and outside the bound. In the probe, with QUESTIONS_KEPT=1, five offers left one entry, and settling them produced five, four of them with no expiry. Those can never be forgotten, so enough of them refuse every new question for good. That is a liveness failure, not a duplicate answer.
Fix: keep expires on the task's attempt record so the settle can carry it back. Then send every writer of a question entry through one retention rule that does both the bound and the expiry check.
C. A rotation retry throws away the evidence it already read (P2). _journal_snapshot (src/agent_turn.py:360, and the vendored copy) reads .1, then the live file. If a rotation lands between those two reads, it retries from scratch. The answer it saw in the old .1 is gone by then, and the retry returns False from the new files. Codex reproduced this with one rotation. The sticky tombstone limits the damage only when the settle ran first, so this is the same "lost evidence reads as absent" class as before.
Fix: keep any affirmative evidence across retries. Once a retry has seen instability, return None rather than False unless continuity is proven.
D. Conflicting question identities (P2). answer_question_id prefers the top-level question_id over arguments.question_id and ignores a disagreement. An intent with top-level "q" and arguments naming "other" reads as answered for q and not for other. The desktop proxy (#1066) writes only top level today, so this is latent.
Fix: when both are present and differ, return unknown. Better still, read one place only.
E. Malformed values crash instead of withholding (P2).

Re-reviewed exact head df2c119dd2bc32f7d338c68e42509c0b38dbc172. This push fixes substantial parts of my earlier review, and the companion desktop change is correct. I cannot clear the block yet.
I independently reproduced the numeric-tombstone, late-settle bound, destructive-rotation, conflicting-identity, and malformed-value findings already recorded in the current-head review at #6092 (review). To avoid duplicating that review, these are additional blocking findings.
-
P1 — collaborator serialization contradicts the authorization policy.
remote_gateway_bridge.py:5764emits the Team-collaborator SYSTEM rulebook, whose shared owner atteam_guardrail.py:65says the collaborator may not authorize any irreversible/system-mutating action. The bridge then appendsroom.question.answerfor that same collaborator atremote_gateway_bridge.py:5771-5776; this PR's protocol explicitly calls the answer an irreversible room write atdocs/remote-gateway-protocol.md:519-520. The exact-head live witness shows the model followed the later answer rule and performed the action, so this is an actual policy bypass, not merely confusing prose. Fix the authorization where the shared policy lives: either make the rule owner-only, or define a narrowly scoped broker-question exception in the shared collaborator rulebook and test the complete serialized task for a non-contradictory authority boundary. -
P1 — retirement leaves a check/append/re-offer window before the turn is fenced.
finish()takes its final answer snapshot attask_attempts.py:1197, commitsFalse/settled and retires task A at1200-1227, and only then fences A's turn at1228-1229. Task B can start after A's commit, snapshot the journal as empty, and then A's still-open proxy can append a succeeded answer before B commits its offer. A deterministic exact-head production-writer schedule produced:
B_got_answer_rule= True
A_answer_now= True
ledger_q= {'offers': ['tsk_A', 'tsk_B'], 'settled': ['tsk_A']}
That authorizes B after A has answered. Fence the turn before the final read/retirement, or persist a fail-closed transitional state that no later offer can cross; add the post-commit/pre-fence interleaving as a contract test.
- P1 — the eviction scan can silently delete a malformed live fence, not only crash. This is a second safety consequence of the malformed-entry issue in the linked review.
_bound_questions()sends every unrelated entry directly through_safe_to_forget()(task_attempts.py:1428-1447) instead of the claimed validator. Under capacity pressure,{'offers':'task-old','settled':'task-old'}is treated as safely settled because both strings become character sets, and the entry is removed. Exact-head output was:
before 2001 {'offers': 'task-old', 'settled': 'task-old'}
after 2000 damaged_present= False
A redelivery can then receive a fresh answer rule while the original task remains capable of answering. Validate every entry's exact schema before any pruning; any malformed entry must refuse the whole offer with no mutation. Cover an unrelated damaged entry through the production writer, both below and above the cap.
Fresh verification at this head: sparrow-task-attempts 70/70, hooks 188/188, agent-turn 52/52, lifecycle 8/8; source/vendor sync and review-checks.sh pass, including a positive-control hardcoded-path failure. CI is green. Those suites do not cover the schedules above.
I separately approved desktop dependency ag2-space/ag2space-cinny-desktop#1066 at exact head 4ef15ea65dcac7504cced3dcbdb01ef5811e36f7; land/deploy it before enabling this feature.

The three-state model is a clear improvement. Each offer is decided and recorded in one ledger write under the file lock. Every entry is checked before anything changes, so a damaged one refuses with no mutation and no eviction. The settle fences the turn before its last journal read. It also closes the earlier review rounds' points: the type check on answered, no tombstone written outside the bound, earlier journal reads kept across a rotation, conflicting ids read as unknown, and non-string statuses read as unknown. Owner-only answering reads only the broker-attested tier (remote_gateway_bridge.py:5634-5637, 5772), and the doc matches the collaborator rulebook. With the flags off, nothing new is reachable (_ATTEMPTS is None).
Should fix
task_attempts.py:560with:1116:sweep()forgets a record that holds a question without freeing the hold, so every later offer of that question is withheld for good. An entry with noexpires_atis never forgettable, and it counts against the cap. Repro with the production writers: offer to tsk_A, ack, sweep([]); the ledger keeps{"holder": "tsk_A"}and tsk_B and tsk_C both getANSWER_UNRECORDED_NOTE. At df2c119 this case was re-offered after the journal check. Fix: insweep, fence the turn, read the journal and call_close_or_freebeforeforget(), asfinish()does. Or, inoffer, treat a missing holder whose turn is fenced and whose journal says no as free. Add a sweep regression.- A live witness at this head (REVIEW.md lesson 15). The last one is at df2c119, and these commits rewrite the offer and settle paths. Please rerun N2 and P with desktop #1066 on the rig.
Liveness, non-blocking (fails closed, never answers twice)
:1198-1201: aclose_turnthat only timed out on the journal lock closes the question as unknown for good. Returning False fromfinish(), so the settle is retried, would keep it recoverable.:1167with:1459-1470: an answer with no outcome yet at result time closes the question as unknown. A laterfailedoutcome can't free it again._questions(:1396-1409): one damaged entry now withholds every question, not just its own. That's fine as fail-closed, but worth a log line naming the entry.- The 2,000 cap is unchanged: closed entries without
expires_atare never forgotten. remote_gateway_bridge.py:4703-4705: a broker-closed task whose answer can't be told still waits with no cap. An owner Stop (task_cancelled) is unaffected. Gating the flag on desktop #1066 being deployed is the acceptable alternative.
Checks at 60fcb46 (clean env): sparrow-task-attempts 72 OK, agent-turn 54 OK, gateway-agent-activity-hooks 188 OK, gateway-agent-activity-lifecycle 8 OK. sync_from_src --check is in sync; review-checks.sh --diff PASS. CI: python standalone 11/15 fails in runtime-api-e2e ("wait returns approved with resolver identity"). The PR doesn't touch that file and it passes locally, so it looks like flake; please re-run.

Re-reviewed exact head 72b38cc67c969ae12f5e431cfdcb4bf880b0498b after the #6108 merge and the new owner-positive evidence.
The P/N2 comment supplies the previously missing exact-head post-restart witness: real owner account on dev, desktop #1066, one correlated successful answer for P and one per concurrent N2 question, closed ledger entries, retired tasks, [no-send] results, and Answered cards. I also spot-checked the three merge conflicts; the resolution retains #6108's format-4 contract write and this PR's question-close behavior. Focused suites pass here (agent-turn 54, attempts 90, hooks 223, lifecycle 9, durable-ack 39, disposal 85), source/vendor sync and review checks pass, and exact-head CI/CLA are green.
P1 blocker — room_question secrets are not sanitized at the persistence boundary. I reproduced two schedules:
-
A fresh question applies only the provider-signature scanner in
packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py:4919-4939; it skips the vault-command redaction stage used by the task-body path at:5912-5933. With promptvault set MY_API_KEY hunter2secret,filter_chat_secretsand_redacted_questionboth returned the value unchanged,_write_tasksucceeded, and the persisted room-question line contained the full value._local_redact_vault_setcorrectly redacted the same input. This contradicts the documented/body-parity promise for arbitrary signatureless secrets. -
A held re-serve is persisted before even the signature scanner runs.
_write_taskcalls_serve_attemptat:5834; the held path returns at:5838-5839, while question redaction is later at:5974-5982._save_reserveat:6130-6138therefore serializes the raw broker task. Exact-head hermetic repro with a fake GitHub token produced:first_write=('task-room-question-reserve-secret', True) queue_has_secret=False second_write=('task-room-question-reserve-secret', True) ledger_has_secret=False reserve_has_secret=True reserve_room_question_prompt=use ghp_...?The raw value was in the mode-0600
state/relay-reserves/v1-*.json. This also reproduces with turn context off (lifecycle on): the task file has no question and the ledger has no question map, but the held reserve still contains the secret. Thus the stated off-path containment is incomplete. A durable reserve may survive restarts or an unavailable ack; filesystem mode does not satisfy the no-secret-persistence contract, and workspace state may be synced or backed up.
Please build one authoritative sanitized copy before _serve_attempt or any durable writer, then use it for reserve/digest/replay and rendering. Question strings need the existing redaction-only order (vault grammar, then signature scanner); quoted question data must never invoke vault interception/storage. Add discriminating coverage for fresh, held-reserve, restart/replay, and turn-context-off paths, including nested fields and identity-changing redaction. The existing happy-path secret test never reaches either failure schedule.
Changes requested; not ready to merge. The new P/N2 witness clears the former live-evidence blocker, but the persistence leak must be fixed and the changed head reverified before approval.

- P and N2 at this exact head, real owner account on dev, desktop #1066, both flags on, bridge restarted at this head. P: one correlated intent and outcome, ledger
answered: true, task closed,[no-send]. N2: two concurrent questions, each with its own task, answer and closed entry. - The merge with #6108: I read the remerge diff. The only hand-made line is #6108's
_note_contract(d)placed first in this PR'sswitch_runedit, with the question close kept in its own try. That matches the resolution note. At this head,sparrow-task-attemptspasses 90 tests andgateway-agent-activity-lifecyclepasses 9, with both flags on.
Before the flags go on anywhere, two things still need the explanation you're writing up. Neither is in this PR's answer path, but they're new since the merge:
- Every task logged
ack for a serve this attempt no longer holds — not recordedabout a second after it was queued. That's the #6108 ack-claim path refusing its own fresh serve. Nothing was lost here, but it shouldn't fire on a normal serve. could not close ([Errno 13] Permission denied …closed)on every turn.
The stray "withheld" post is the backend's _notify_asker, as you say.
… vault commands included The held serve's saved copy took the raw broker task, so a room question's secret was written to disk before the render-time redaction, with turn context on or off. A question string now gets the vault grammar's redaction (never interception), then the signature scanner, at the top of _write_task; off, the question is dropped.

My last open point, the owner-positive live witness, is posted at 72b38cc (the 22:41Z comment). It ran with Mark's real owner account on dev.s.space, both flags on and the format-4 ledger, through desktop proxy #1066:
- P: an owner-tier task carried the answer rule and produced one
room.question.answerintent and one succeeded outcome. - N2: covered in the same run.
The one code commit since is a good catch. The held serve's saved copy used to take the raw broker task, so a room question's pasted secret reached disk before the render-time redaction. Now _write_task sanitizes room_question at the top, before any durable writer. The vault grammar only redacts there (it never intercepts or stores), then filter_chat_secrets runs, and with turn context off the question is dropped. Render reuses the sanitized copy and the found types. The new test pins a held serve's saved copy carrying no secret. The rest of the range is main merges (#6127, #6129). CI is green.

- Redaction fix (de5436a): a room question is now sanitized at the top of
_write_task, with vault-grammar redaction first and then the signature scanner, before any durable writer, the held serve's saved copy included. The render step only reuses the result. With turn context off, the question is dropped.gateway-agent-activity-hookspasses at this head with both flags on. - The two log lines: the explanation matches the code. The duplicate ack comes from the poll thread and
_retry_claimed_acksracing on one shared claim, and the loser logs. The Errno 13 is a secondclose_turnon an already-fenced turn (O_CREATwith 0400 on an existing file). Neither loses data. The idempotentclose_turnfollow-up is the right fix. - The transcript gap you flagged (
room.question.inspectputs the raw prompt into the runtime transcript): I'm fine leaving it out of this PR. The agent has to read the question to answer it, and redacting tool output in the transcript is a harness-level change. Please file it as its own issue next to the held-copy redaction PR, so it isn't lost.

The prior P1 is fixed at the persistence boundary. de5436a37 sanitizes room_question at the top of _write_task, before _serve_attempt or any reserve writer: vault grammar first, then signature filtering; turn-context-off drops the question. Rendering and replay receive that sanitized copy.
The regression is discriminating. The two new named tests pass here; running those same current tests against blocked head 72b38cc67 produces three failures: the fresh signatureless vault value remains in the task file, and the held reserve retains the fake token with turn context both on and off. Independent exact-head probes found neither value in the task, ledger, or reserve. Focused suites pass: agent-turn 54, attempts 90, hooks 225, lifecycle 9, durable-ack 39, disposal 85, plus the remote-gateway standalone checks. Source/vendor sync, git diff --check, review checks (including a firing positive control), exact-head CI, and CLA are green.
The post-restart exact-head live evidence is sufficient for this delta: collaborator T received no answer authority; owner P produced one correlated successful answer, a closed ledger entry, retired task, and [no-send], with the fake token absent from the local bridge writers and log. N2 passed at 72b38cc67; the only topic commit since changes question sanitization, and the concurrency suites remain green.
Two non-blocking follow-ups are explicit:
room.question.inspectreturns the raw canonical prompt, which the runtime transcript persists. This approval does not claim transcripts are redacted. The exact-head witness disclosed it, and the owner accepted it as a separate harness/MCP-output issue in review5730823250; please file that issue as requested. Rollout remains gated by #6124.- Vault-command redaction is not idempotent: a held replay redacts the already-redacted placeholder again. No raw value reappears and answer semantics use canonical inspect data, so it does not reopen this blocker, but a stable placeholder plus an exact-output regression would avoid cosmetic prompt corruption.
No remaining code blocker at this head. This approval replaces my stale CHANGES_REQUESTED. The PR is still draft and main has advanced, so it is not merge-ready until it is refreshed as required, marked ready, and the normal repository gates are rechecked.

An answer can't be undone. So a

Evidence is aroom.question.answerintent in the journal naming this task and this question, joined to its outcome byoperation_id: succeeded means answered, onlyfailedmeans not, anything else (an answer naming no question, disagreeing ids, a journal that did not hold still) cannot be told. The settle (and a sweep) fences the task's turn first, then reads its journal, then closes the entry (true on proof, else unknown; never frees it); a turn already closed counts as fenced, and one whose fence can't be had yet keeps the attempt for the next pass. Only an offer creates an entry, within 2,000: free and expired entries are forgotten first, then the oldest closed ones (the broker refuses a second answer from the same respondent); a live hold is never forgotten, even past
