fix(sparrow): check owner tier, event room and quoted text before applying HITL replies - #5910
Conversation
…gone A task-media task whose task file is missing used to resolve confine_root=None and read attachments against the plain allowlist. Owner tasks legitimately upload unconfined, so the caller now passes a _CONFINE_UNRESOLVED sentinel when no task file exists to judge tier; _read_attachment refuses it outright.

Requesting changes at e122aa77. The ask is about the PR body; the code checks out.
What I verified (scratch worktree, isolated env):
tests/hitl-replies.test.py(52),tests/hitl-task-relay-click.test.py(15),tests/collaborator-attachment-gate.test.py(30),tests/gateway-signal-task-media.test.py(24) andtests/context-source-guard.test.pyall pass.- Mutations, each caught by the tests: dropping the transport-attested
room/senderoverwrite (src/hitl/replies.py:145) failshitl-replies; removing theauthorizecall failshitl-repliesandhitl-task-relay-click(5 failures); bypassingconfine_rootin_read_attachmentfailsgateway-signal-task-media. - The real gain here: before this PR,
validate_action's room check compared against aroomtaken from the click payload itself. Now the room comes from the event. Also new: an owner capped below owner by the local tier map can no longer click.
Change requested: false_claim (PR body)
- Test plan and evidence cite
tests/hitl-owner-tier-gate.test.pyandtests/task-media-confinement.test.py. Neither exists. The pastedRan 14 tests in 0.420s - OKis not output from this PR's tests. Please paste the real runs. - "Reviewers, look first at
src/outbox_adapter.py": that file is not in the diff. The confinement lives inpackages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.pyandsrc/policy/egress/result.py. - The "Before" line says a non-owner's click "triggered task resumption". On main,
HitlReplyHandler.offeralready ignores any actor other than the configured owner (src/hitl/replies.py:135). Please describe the gap that was actually open: the tier cap and the payload-supplied room.
Note: the hooks/context-source-guard.py task-filename regex change is unrelated to HITL, and #5909 edits the same file. They merge without conflict.
No approval at this head yet. A live click on a real card in a shared room is still owed (named, not blocking). The red python standalone tests (1/9) is the hermetic-env-sentinels timeout that also hits unrelated PRs (e.g. #5888).

Re-review at head 0fcaf8457a81838ab378af986c22b353ad77dd8a. The two body problems from my earlier change request are fixed, and the code still checks out. I am not approving yet: there is no other approval at this head, and CI is still running.
Verified at this head (scratch worktree, env -i, scratch HOME, Homebrew python3.13):
- Every test file the body cites is in the PR, and
src/outbox_adapter.pyis no longer cited. The counts match my run: hitl-replies 52 OK, hitl-task-relay-click 15 OK, collaborator-attachment-gate 30 OK, gateway-signal-task-media 24 OK, context-source-guard PASS. - The "Before" section now says main already ignored a click from anyone but the configured owner. It lists only the remaining gaps (local tier cap, attested tier, room from the payload, symlink escape). That matches main.
- Since my review, the PR's own changes differ only in
tests/hitl-task-relay-click.test.py. Apart from that, the merge of main left the PR's diff against its merge-base line-for-line identical. - The new guest case has teeth. I mutated
_click_owner_problem(remote_gateway_bridge.py) so that it ignores an attestedguesttier but still honoursteam.test_event_click_checks_the_attested_tierthen fails on thetier='guest'subtest only, while the team subtest stays green. Removing the tier check outright fails 6 tests. The file restored passes 15/15. - No hardcoded workspace paths in the added lines. The new tests'
read_textcalls read state and result files, not module source.
Still missing before approval:
- A second approval at this head.
- CI going green. The required python, shell, node and ag2-sparrow publish-gate jobs were pending when I checked;
license/clais success.
Not blocking: the live click witness against a real room is still owed, as the body says.

Re-review at 5d6c2d98 — not approving yet: no other approval exists at this head.
Verified:
0fcaf845..5d6c2d98is one commit, test-only (+68 lines intests/collaborator-attachment-gate.test.py,tests/gateway-signal-task-media.test.py,tests/hitl-replies.test.py). No product code changed, so the code verification from the0fcaf845review carries over.- The new tests exercise behaviour. They call
open_confined_attachment/trusted_attach_rooton real symlinks and dirs in a tempdir,_read_attachmentwith a patched size cap and a failing encoder, andtask_to_eventwith and withoutaccess_tier. None of them read module source. - All three files pass locally at this head in an isolated env: 34 + 25 + 53 tests OK.
- Mutation check: changing
src/hitl/replies.py:215to stamp a fixed"owner"tier makestest_task_event_carries_the_task_access_tierfail. (A second mutation, dropping thereal == expectedcheck atsrc/policy/egress/result.py:189, was not caught. Thedirlinkcase is refused earlier by thelstatnon-dir branch, so that comparison is only reached by a root whose parent is a symlink. Not blocking.) - CI: every check is green, including
diff coverage >= 95% (python).license/clais success (1 context). No unresolved review threads.
Missing for approval: a second approval at the current head. My earlier CHANGES_REQUESTED at e122aa77 stays in place until I approve; I will approve once another reviewer has approved at the head. The live click round trip is still owed. That is noted, not blocking.

Approved at 5d6c2d9 (agent-assisted review by Mars, Qingyun's Sutando seat). I reviewed the code; I didn't re-run the suites locally and relied on CI, which is green.
Click authorization
HitlReplyHandler(both copies) re-stamps the reply'sroom/senderfrom the event, not the payload, before applying, and calls the newauthorizehook first. A refusal setslast_outcome = "refused"and applies nothing.- The bridge wires
authorizeto_click_owner_problem: the actor must equal the configured owner exactly, an attested tier (when present) must be owner, and the local tier-map cap always applies. A missing attested tier still requires the exact owner actor, so it fails closed on the identity. - The task path now carries
access_tierinto the event, and_hitl_control_bodyreports "That click did not apply: …". A refused text-fallback click passes through as an ordinary message instead. human_action._textnow drops quoted lines (> …) and checks structured click text before the owner's own text, so a quotedanswer ha_x Ncan no longer resolve a card.
Attachment confinement (identical in team_result_guard.py and src/policy/egress/result.py): trusted_attach_root rejects a symlinked or non-directory root, and open_confined_attachment walks each component with dir_fd plus O_DIRECTORY|O_NOFOLLOW, then requires a regular file. _post_ready_results fails closed (_CONFINE_UNRESOLVED) when a task-media task's file can't be found.
Non-blocking
- The final
os.open(..., O_RDONLY | O_NOFOLLOW, dir_fd=…)has noO_NONBLOCK, so a FIFO planted in the task media directory blocks the bridge before theS_ISREGcheck. AddO_NONBLOCK(then clear it, or just read) so a FIFO is refused instead of hanging. - The unrelated
hooks/context-source-guard.pytask-name regex change is disclosed in the body; fine to carry. - The live click witness is still owed, per the body.

Approving at 5d6c2d98. Supersedes my CHANGES_REQUESTED at e122aa77.
My only ask there was the PR body; verified fixed in my COMMENT reviews at 0fcaf845 and 5d6c2d98:
- Every cited test file is in the PR and a clean-env run matches the body's counts exactly (hitl-replies 52, hitl-task-relay-click 15, collaborator-attachment-gate 30, gateway-signal-task-media 24, context-source-guard PASS); the "Before" no longer overstates non-owner clicks.
- The code was verified by mutation at the earlier head (all three fixes); the new guest-tier case fails when an attested guest is let through
_click_owner_problem; the coverage commit'saccess_tiertest fails whensrc/hitl/replies.py:215is broken.
Gates: qingyun-wu APPROVED at 5d6c2d98; CI fully green (incl. diff coverage); license/cla success (1 context); no unresolved threads.
Named, not blocking: the live click round trip is still owed.

Priority
Level: medium
Reason: a Sparrow HITL approval click from a non-owner tier could be applied, and Team result attachments were not confined to the task media directory.
Closes
N/A — security hardening from an audit, no public issue.
Summary
Before (origin/main). A click from an actor other than the configured owner was already ignored. The remaining gaps:
After. A click applies only at effective owner tier (broker-attested tier and local tier-map cap). The room and sender are taken from the event, not the payload. A refused click returns "That click did not apply: the click is not at owner tier." Team result attachments are confined to the task media directory, and symlinks that leave it are refused. The unrelated
hooks/context-source-guard.pyregex change is described below.Review first
src/hitl/replies.pyandpackages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/hitl/replies.py: event-attested room/sender re-stamp and the newauthorizehook.packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/remote_gateway_bridge.py: tier check on task and event clicks, and attachment confinement.src/policy/egress/result.pyandpackages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/team_result_guard.py: Team attachment path confinement.packages/ag2-sparrow/ag2_sparrow/human_action.py: small supporting change.Unrelated change
hooks/context-source-guard.pyhas a small regex change that does not belong to the HITL fix. It overlaps #5909 in the same file region but does not conflict (merged cleanly with current main).Tests (at head 5d6c2d9, clean env,
