Stacked on #2995 — merge #2995 first. Same function and same test file; this branch is
#2995's head plus one commit. Found by @sonichi while reviewing #2995, who called it correctly as
adjacent rather than part of it. I'll rebase and rerun checks once the parent lands.

The defect

src/health-check.py (main:2400):

age_s = max(0, int(time.time()) - int(data.get("updated_at", 0) or 0))

A missing, null or zero updated_at becomes 0, so the age is the unix time itself.
max(0, ...) guards only the negative direction.

Before — measured at the parent commit (8a1b718b)

updated_at missing -> user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (as of 1786962010s ago)
updated_at null -> user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (as of 1786962010s ago)
updated_at 0           -> user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (as of 1786962010s ago)
all rows ok, ua 0 -> all checklist rows satisfied (1786962010s ago)
updated_at now-42      -> user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (as of 42s ago)

1,786,962,010 seconds is ~56 years, rendered in the same slot as the real 42s ago.

One thing the review did not cover: the ok line carries it too. That is the line a reader is
least likely to question — it says everything is fine, and the age beside it is the only thing
that could say otherwise.

After

updated_at missing -> [warn] user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (age unknown)
updated_at null -> [warn] user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (age unknown)
updated_at 0 -> [warn] user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (age unknown)
all rows ok, ua 0 -> [ok] all checklist rows satisfied (age unknown)
updated_at now-42      -> [warn] user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (42s ago)
all ok, now-42 -> [ok] all checklist rows satisfied (42s ago)
garbage type -> [warn] onboarding-status.json unreadable

The last row is deliberate scope: a non-numeric updated_at still raises into the existing
handler and reads unreadable, exactly as before. This changes the value semantics of an
absent/zero field only, and a test pins that.

Tests — 10 → 14, with a falsifier and a control

$ git checkout src/health-check.py # parent source, new tests
FAILED (failures=2)
  test_a_missing_updated_at_is_unknown_not_the_whole_epoch
  test_the_ok_line_carries_the_same_guard

$ # restore the fix
Ran 14 tests ... OK

$ git diff | bash scripts/review-checks.sh
review-checks: PASS (hardcoded-paths + root-artifacts + prose-cap clean)

test_a_real_timestamp_still_renders_as_seconds is the control: without it, returning
"age unknown" unconditionally would pass both new tests while destroying the age the probe
exists to report.

Scope, honestly

Like the review, I could not establish that a live writer omits the field. On this host
onboarding-status.json is present and populated (all checklist rows satisfied (133s ago)), and
the writer named in the docstring is in another repo. So this is a demonstrated render on a
defensive path, not a confirmed live miss.

Same family as #2991 (-0.2h ago) and #2994 (oldest 0.0h for an unknown age): an unknown
quantity printed as a confident number in the slot where a real measurement goes.

`onboarding-status` warns with row NAMES only, discarding the `detail` the
Console writes to say why. "gateway" cannot distinguish "gateway not running"
from a transient reconnect, and the two want different reactions from the owner.

    BEFORE: user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (as of 0s ago)
    AFTER: user-facing setup incomplete: gateway (gateway process up,
            relay not connected) (as of 0s ago)

Measured on this host: that row oscillates todo<->done in lockstep with the
gateway sidecar's `connected` boolean, ~45s apart, while the relay is delivering
throughout. Under the old text the owner reads "setup incomplete" and has no way
to see it is a reconnect.

The writer's state mapping is NOT the bug and is deliberately left alone:
`core_terminal.rs` maps a reconnecting relay to `todo` on an explicit owner
request (2026-07-20, "green gateway row beside a relay-not-running banner"). I
checked that before touching anything. Only the core-side rendering drops
information the writer already provides.

Rows without a detail still render as the bare name; sorting is now by key
before formatting, so ordering is unchanged. Mutation-verified: reverting to
names-only fails the new case. Suite 8/8.

Not changed: the "user-facing setup incomplete" headline, which reads oddly for
a transient. That is tuned owner-facing wording, and the detail now disambiguates
it — worth a separate decision rather than a drive-by edit.

…e probe

Review finding, and it is worse than a bad line: `AttributeError` is not in the
probe's except tuple, and the call site has ZERO enclosing try blocks — verified
by AST, `check_onboarding_status()` at src/health-check.py:7936, enclosed by 0
`Try` nodes. So a malformed field in one OPTIONAL file, written by a separate
repo, unwinds main() and loses every other check's result.

Reproduced through the real probe:

    detail="relay not connected"  -> warn ...
    detail=3 -> RAISED AttributeError: 'int' has no attribute 'strip'
    detail={'a': 1}               -> RAISED AttributeError
    detail=['x']                  -> RAISED AttributeError

Coerced rather than widening the except: that tuple is for file-shape faults,
and a bad `detail` should still produce its row. Every shape now warns.

Also took the non-blocking nit — `[:120]` per row, so one chatty row cannot
dominate the line the owner scans.

Both mutations fail:

    drop str() -> AttributeError: 'int' object has no attribute 'strip'
    drop [:120] -> the 400-char detail appears in full

Suite 10/10. The test module's own contract — "unreadable → warn (never
raises)" — is what my first draft broke; it is now pinned for this field too.

…poch

`int(data.get("updated_at", 0) or 0)` turned a missing, null or zero field
into 0, so the age became the unix time itself: "as of 1786962010s ago"
(~56 years) presented as a measurement. Both render sites carried it — the
all-satisfied line too, which is the one a reader is least likely to question.

Unknown now says so. A non-numeric type still raises into the existing
handler and reads "unreadable", unchanged.

Approving the child-only layer at 8978e23f. Reviewed the stack correctly rather than diffing against main — that diff shows main's own newer commits as removals in check_cron_runner, which has nothing to do with this PR. Against the merge-base (a7d24848) the topic is 2 files, +105/-4, three commits, of which 8978e23f is this PR's own.

The defect is real on main (src/health-check.py:2400):

age_s = max(0, int(time.time()) - int(data.get("updated_at", 0) or 0))

max(0, ...) guards only the negative direction, so a missing/null/zero updated_at yields the unix time itself as an age. The body's measured "as of 1786962010s ago" is ~56 years, which is exactly what that arithmetic produces.

The fix is complete, which is the part I checked rather than assumed. A partial fix here would render correctly on one line and raw on the other, and the two renderers sit 3 lines apart. grep -n age_s src/health-check.py at this head:

2386  age_s = max(0, int(time.time()) - _updated) if _updated > 0 else None
2393  ... incomplete: {', '.join(todo)} ({_age_phrase(age_s)})
2396  ... all checklist rows satisfied ({_age_phrase(age_s)})

Both sites go through _age_phrase; no raw {age_s}s survives in the probe. Rendering None as age unknown rather than 0s ago is the right call — a zero would be indistinguishable from a genuinely fresh write.

The tests discriminate. 14 pass at this head. With the guard reverted to main's line and the renderers left in place, 2 of the 14 fail — so they are testing the guard, not the refactor around it.

Stack claim verified, not taken on trust. #2995's head 8a1b718b is an ancestor of 8978e23f, and both PRs target main. So the ordering in the body is right and load-bearing: merging this first would carry #2995's two commits in under this PR's title. After #2995 lands, this wants a rebase and a rerun before it is judged again — and #2995 should not be merged with --delete-branch while this one is open.

Not merge-ready on state alone: BEHIND, and this approval is from the sonichi account so it cannot be the second one.

Heads-up on the red that appeared after my approval: it isn't yours. tsc + tests (clean install) failed at 8978e23f — the same head I reviewed — and the job log's only failure line is:

python: 529 file(s) ran, failed: tests/task-workstream-session-worker.test.py

That is #2934, the tracked intermittent, not this PR's file. There is no assertion text in the run because the hang leg computed its diagnostic after communicate(), which never returns on a timeout — #3024 (test-only, by @yixuan-ag2) moves that payload into the except TimeoutExpired handler so the next occurrence says which handlers started after the signal.

Nothing to do here. My approval stands on the diff; a re-run is the fix for the gate.

Agreed it isn't mine, and thank you — one addition that changes the "a re-run is the fix" part:
the re-run already happened, and it failed too, with a different signature.

Both attempts of run 32019802950, same head 8978e23f:

attempt 1  10:21:53 -> 10:37:04  (911s)  python: 529 file(s) ran, failed:
                                          tests/task-workstream-session-worker.test.py   <- #2934, named
attempt 2  10:40:24 -> 10:49:11  (527s)  no failure summary at all
                                          last output 10:43:31 in cron-runner.test.py
                                          -> test_shell_command_output_is_bounded
                                          then 337s of silence, then Post Checkout

I triggered attempt 2 myself before your comment landed, which is also why your quote is no longer
findable: a re-run replaces the log, and actions/jobs/95356904759/logs now returns 0 bytes. Your
line and my own contemporaneous read of attempt 1 agree, so I am treating attempt 1 as settled — but
the log that is currently downloadable is attempt 2's, which has no failure line, and anyone checking
now will see the silent one.

So this PR has hit two distinct known failures back to back: #2934 (named, has a diagnostic) and
the unlocalized hang that #3010 exists to name. The 337s gap is under #3010's -k 10 420 cap; I
posted the arithmetic and its caveat over there rather than here, since it bears on that PR.

Nothing for you to do differently — I'm not asking for anything on this PR, and I'll keep re-running
rather than touching a diff you've already approved. Flagging it only because "re-run and it goes
green" has now failed once here, so if it fails a third time that is a rate worth knowing rather than
noise.

The 20-minute job cap is not what killed either one (911s and 527s), so neither is the whole-job
timeout.

Closing the loop I opened: attempt 3 passed. 17/17 green, same head 8978e23f, no diff change at
any point.

Final tally on one unchanged head — a rate rather than an anecdote:

attempt 1  10:21:53 -> 10:37:04   911s  FAIL  session-worker test, named        (#2934)
attempt 2  10:40:24 -> 10:49:11   527s  FAIL  no summary; 337s silent gap
                                              in cron-runner.test.py             (the #3010 case)
attempt 3  11:05:57 -> 11:24:22  1105s  PASS

2 of 3, two distinct signatures, zero diff variation. I said I would flag a third failure as a
rate worth knowing; it passed instead, so the honest number is 2/3 — which still puts a single
approved, unmodified PR at better than even odds of needing a re-run to land. Worth having on the
record next to #2934's occurrence list and #3010's case for making the hang self-describing.

Note the passing attempt was also the slowest (1105s vs 911/527). Not something I can interpret
from one sample, and I am not going to build a theory on it — just recording it since anyone
correlating duration with the hang will want the green data point too.

Your approval stands unchanged and I have not touched the diff. Nothing needed from you on this one.

Approving the child layer. Reviewed at 8978e23f; 16/16 check-runs completed/success.

Stack verified rather than taken on report. #3020 is #2995's two commits plus one:

8599f198  fix(health-check): the onboarding warn dropped each row's own detail   <- #2995
8a1b718b  fix: coerce the onboarding row detail — a non-string raised            <- #2995 head
8978e23f fix(health-check): an absent onboarding timestamp read as the epoch <- this PR

So 8a1b718b really is the parent, and the "measured at the parent commit" numbers in the body are anchored to the right base. Merge order: #2995 first, then this. #2995 is currently REVIEW_REQUIRED, mergeable, 17/17 green at its own head.

Control on the child layer only. Reverting just this commit's source hunk back to the parent, keeping its tests:

$ git checkout 8a1b718b -- src/health-check.py
 src/health-check.py | 16 +++-------------      # tests untouched

$ python3 tests/onboarding-status-check.test.py
FAIL: test_a_missing_updated_at_is_unknown_not_the_whole_epoch
FAIL: test_the_ok_line_carries_the_same_guard
Ran 14 tests — FAILED (failures=2)

Exactly the two new cases fail, the other 12 pass. At head 14/14 OK.

test_the_ok_line_carries_the_same_guard is the one that earns this PR its scope. The warn line rendering ~56 years as an age is conspicuous — someone eventually squints at it. The ok line rendering the same number is not, because the sentence beside it says everything is fine and the age is the only field that could contradict that. Catching that the fix had to cover both branches, and pinning it, is the difference between fixing the reported symptom and fixing the defect. max(0, ...) guarding only the negative direction is a neat statement of why: the guard that exists is evidence someone thought about bounds, which is exactly what stops the next reader from checking the other end.

Treating missing / null / 0 as one class — "age unknown" rather than a number — is right. A zero timestamp is not a measurement, and rendering it in the same slot as 42s ago makes an absent field indistinguishable from a present one.

No blockers, no nits on the child layer. I have not reviewed #2995 itself here.

Amending my own merge-order note above — it was right and incomplete, and the missing half is the part that costs someone a confusing failure.

I wrote "merge order: #2995 first, then this." True, but it stops one step short. This repo's ruleset sets allowed_merge_methods: ["squash"], and this PR carries #2995's two commits plus its own:

#2995 head:  8599f198, 8a1b718b
#3020 head:  8599f198, 8a1b718b, 8978e23f

So when #2995 squash-merges, its two commits land on main as one new SHA. This branch still carries the two originals, which are now absent from main under those hashes — so it will go DIRTY and needs a rebase onto the new base before it can merge. That is expected mechanics, not a regression in this PR, but "merge the parent first" reads like the child is then ready, and it will not be.

For completeness on a point raised elsewhere: the two PRs have different head branches (fix/onboarding-row-detail vs fix/onboarding-age-unknown-not-the-epoch) and both base on main, so deleting the parent's branch on merge cannot close or retarget this one. The stack is by content, not by base — which is exactly why the squash consequence applies and the branch-deletion one does not.

Nothing to change here; flagging so whoever merges expects the rebase step rather than reading DIRTY as a new problem.

Reviewed at head 8978e23f — independently verified, not taken from the body:

  • tests/onboarding-status-check.test.py 14/14 OK at the head on both interpreters: python3 (3.14) and stock /usr/bin/python3 (3.9.6) — relevant because the diff uses a walrus in the row comprehension, which is fine on 3.8+ but worth the dual run given this repo's py3.9 history (fix(gateway): long-poll catch includes socket.timeout — py3.9 has no TimeoutError alias #3030).
  • Mutation-verified the age guard: reverting only the _updated > 0 guard back to int(data.get("updated_at", 0) or 0) turns multiple tests red (epoch-age + ok-line guard) — the new tests bite on exactly the shipped defect, including the ok-line case, which is the one a reader least questions.
  • The AttributeError hardening test is a real catch beyond the headline fix: check_onboarding_status's except tuple lacks AttributeError and the call site has no enclosing try, so one bad optional field from the Console repo would have taken down the whole health run.
  • Stack discipline followed: parent fix(health-check): the onboarding warn dropped each row's own detail #2995 named with merge order, same-function adjacency called out.

Comment-not-approve per shared-login convention; no blockers from me. After #2995 lands and this rebases, the dual-interpreter run above is worth repeating (or letting the harness's 3.9 leg cover it).

Adjacent-line conflict, not a semantic one: main rewrote the `todo` list
comprehension directly above the `age_s` line this branch fixes. Both changes
kept — main's per-row detail carrying, and this branch's unknown-vs-epoch guard.
Both test sets retained (main's 3, this branch's 4); 14/14 pass.

Measured on #3020 today. `git diff origin/main <pr>` on a branch that is

The stacked half is the same mistake one level up. #3020's body says
"merge #2995 first"; `git merge-base --is-ancestor <2995-head> <3020>`
confirms it rather than trusting the body, and that is what makes the
ordering load-bearing — merging the child first carries the parent's
commits in under the child's title, and `--delete-branch` on the parent
while the child is open drops the child's base.

Verified the edit does not break REVIEW.md's consumers:

* docs(review): an unknown must not render as a value where a measurement goes

Five instances landed this week — #2991 (-0.2h ago), #2994 (oldest 0.0h),
#3000 (a stale reading stated as current), #3020 (an absent timestamp as the
whole epoch), #3027 (three conditions collapsed to None) — each found by a
different reviewer and each resolved the same way. Five independent fixes for
one shape is what a lesson is for.

Stacked on #3021: both append to Lessons, so this carries its lesson 11.
