rustup update fails because of missing directory #938
I've been getting this error consistently for a few months. Usually the toolchain updates just fine (that is, it seems to be functional), but I'm always getting the error messages. e.g.:
@rnestler
This looks like an antivirus issue - something is removing the DLLs which rustup installs. This causes it to fail when it tries to update (by first removing the previous version) and also causes nightly to fail to start (missing DLL).
If possible, my personal recommendation would be to only use microsoft security products. If that's not possible, see if you can adjust the settings to allow rustup to work correctly.
@lamarqua That looks like a different problem. Are you installing 64-bit rust on a 32-bit system? It could appear to be working if you have a 32-bit version of rust earlier on your PATH.
Nope, I'm running 64-bits windows 7 pro. I don't even think I've ever had a 32-bits rust version installed on this machine. (A search for rustc.exe on my machine gives none other than the stable / beta / nightly triad installed via rustup.)
I re-ran rustup update after the failure, but this time, after having ran VsDevCmd.bat (which is basically the equivalent of vcvarsall.bat, but for the new Visual Studio 2017 which I've been using):
@lamarqua Ah yes, rust doesn't automatically detect Visual Studio 2017 yet, so you need to run vcvarsall.bat. This is a rust issue, but I suspect @retep998 is already working on this...
It's surprising that rustc --version (the command rustup runs) crashes though.
I'm closing this (the missing DLL issue) because if, as I suspect, it's caused by a virus scanner deleting DLLs, there is nothing we can really do about it.
@lamarqua If you are still having problems please open a separate issue.

I could solve it by deleting both

Thanks for the report @rnestler. I have no idea what's going on here offhand, but I'm sorry your toolchains got hosed.

(The update failure may have been due to my internet connection, which sometimes corrupts downloads.)

Yeah, it's weird, because it doesn't crash when I run it from the command line, even when I don't run vcvarsall.
It only ever crashes (showing a MessageBox) when I run
