Problem

I tried to install thumbv7neon-unknown-linux-musleabihf:

$ rustup target add thumbv7neon-unknown-linux-musleabihf
error: toolchain 'nightly-aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu' does not support target 'thumbv7neon-unknown-linux-musleabihf'
note: you can see a list of supported targets with `rustc --print=target-list`
note: if you are adding support for a new target to rustc itself, see https://rustc-dev-guide.rust-lang.org/building/new-target.html

but

$ rustc --print=target-list | grep neon
thumbv7neon-linux-androideabi
thumbv7neon-unknown-linux-gnueabihf
thumbv7neon-unknown-linux-musleabihf

    It's a tier 3 target, so no host tools are available for it:

    https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/rustc/platform-support.html#tier-3

    @hkBst Sorry for the bad experience!

    @djc I believe it's rather not about the lack of host tools for tier 3 in this case (@hkBst, according to the logs, uses aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu as the host), but the lack of any reliable officially prebuilt artifacts for tier 3 targets. This means that rustup simply cannot be used to install the target support in question to your toolchains until https://github.com/rust-lang/rust until it gets promoted to tier 2.

    Given that there aren't many things that we can do about it, I'm closing this issue as won't fix.

    For general directions on compiling tier 3 support from source, see: https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/rustc/platform-support/armv7-sony-vita-newlibeabihf.html#building-the-target (replace armv7-sony-vita-newlibeabihf with your target).

    Thanks @rami3l, that explains it.

    Perhaps something can still be done about the suboptimal self-contradictory error message?

    @hkBst Yes, such an issue is on our roadmap already: #4006
