Resizing Issues in React Native App on iPad with iOS 26, with Multitasking settings enabled #54105

Description

Description

The React Native app does not allow resizing below a certain width and height on iPad running iOS 26. Also, there are issues when you click "maximize" button of the window. I have enabled “Windowed Apps” in the Multitasking settings.

To confirm that this is not an issue with my project setup, I created a new blank React Native app and a blank native iOS app.

The issue is not seen in the blank native iOS app, but the issue is seen in the blank React Native app.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Enable “Windowed Apps” in the Multitasking settings on the iPad.
  2. Try resizing the RN app; it can be resized to the size shown in the screenshot, but it cannot be made any smaller than that.
  3. Try clicking "maximize" button of the window, the app does not go to full-screen mode in some cases.

Hi @arunnambissan ! Sorry, I didn't manage to look into this earlier. I performed a quick test (just to see at a glance) and could not reproduce it on the rn-tester (test app in the RN monorepo), but I will try to look deeper tomorrow.

@artus9033 Thank you for looking into this. I created the blank RN app using the cli command mentioned in this doc https://reactnative.dev/docs/getting-started-without-a-framework

@arunnambissan Add this to Info.plist file.

@abhidan2 Just checked, I already have that in my Info.plist

Hi @arunnambissan , I also dived into that today. I think the reason why this behaviour occurs is indeed related to what @abhidan2 described: while current Apple docs don't explicitly mention that, there is some archived documentation from iOS 9 mentioning that iPad multitasking requires all 4 orientations to be allowed - as per this SO thread: https://stackoverflow.com/a/32560406/4618440
Having the UIRequiresFullScreen set may also bring a collision.

@arunnambissan, I created a new app with the RN CLI and I think I know, where your problem originates from. We need to check two things:

    1. Please, check if your project.pbxproj lists iPad as a supported destination:
    Image

If only iPhone is listed there, then the app will run on the iPad, but not with all capabilities, resulting in lack of support for arbitrary resizing of its window.

    1. Please ensure that your Info.plist allows for all 4 orientations, necessarily for the iPad:
    Image

Both steps need to be present at once - I double checked and just doing 1) without 2) allows you to partly resize the window, however it will still have some limits and will be rendered in a scaled-up mode due to being run in compatibility mode.
On the other hand, if you do just 2) but not 1), then the UI itself won't be scaled-up, but you will only be able to slightly resize the window, keeping it locked to a large size in general.

In case of any problems, just to make sure we're on the same page, below I'm attaching a git patch you can just git apply resizing.patch to a new RN CLI project - it should resolve the problem:

    resizing.patch

For me, the result with both 1) and 2) is as follows:

In general, thank you for raising this - I think that this is a valid point and the RN CLI template should include this configuration for the iPad out-of-the-box. I'll raise a PR for the community template to include this.

Thank you @artus9033! It worked when I set UIRequiresFullScreen to NO in Info.plist.

Greta to hear that! I think we can close the issue, then - support for that does not require changes in RN, but adjustments in user space code.

    @DanielKuhn

To anyone finding their way here due to the same problem: iOS introduced a new flag in 26.2 which allows you to ignore the deprecated UIRequiresFullScreen-flag starting from a specific version: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/bundleresources/information-property-list/uirequiresfullscreenignoredstartingwithversion
This way you can keep the flag for older iOS versions and ignore it from 26 upwards.
