The open-source integration package for System One Engine: an HTTP client, MCP bridge, dedicated browser companion and agent skill for bounded evaluations.
The System One Engine application and studio are private-source software, maintained separately. This repository contains the public integration layer. It does not contain the engine, provider implementation, studio, usage database or administrator routes. The launcher downloads a version-pinned, SHA-256 verified compiled application runtime under its separate preview license. Application source stays private.
npx sysoneOne command starts the local engine and opens Studio. Add your Vercel AI Gateway key in Settings, try a pattern from Library, then create a scoped agent connection in Connections. The app owns its server; no separate server command or source checkout is required. Keep the terminal running; Ctrl+C stops the engine. A second launch reuses a matching engine and opens its Studio.
Node 22.18+ and internet access for the first download are required. The runtime is
cached under ~/.cache/systemoneengine; private settings live under
~/.config/systemoneengine. Startup makes no inference request. Provider usage
requires your own Gateway account. The preview has no System One subscription fee.
Use npx sysone app --no-open without a browser, or --port 4320 --home /private/path
for an isolated instance. Existing engines are reused only when the owner token
matches. No background daemon is installed.
npm install sysoneNode 22.18+ is required. Your provider key stays with the engine; this client needs
only its URL and a scoped consumer token. engine.patterns() discovers editable recipes.
import { createClient } from 'sysone/client';
const engine = createClient({
url: process.env.SYSONE_URL,
token: process.env.SYSONE_TOKEN,
});
console.log(await engine.capabilities());
const result = await engine.runPattern({
pattern: 'palette-match',
state: 'A calm dark workspace with one restrained accent.',
candidates: {
slate: 'Dark slate, pale text, restrained blue accent',
festival: 'Bright yellow, magenta and saturated orange',
},
});Use a loopback HTTP origin for local engines or HTTPS for hosted engines. Redirects are rejected so credentials cannot follow an unexpected destination. Requests have bounded time and response size. The caller controls cancellation and retries.
# With SYSONE_URL and SYSONE_TOKEN already set in your environment:
npx sysone status
npx sysone mcp
# Or use a private JSON file containing {"url":"...","token":"..."}:
npx sysone mcp --connection /private/path/agent.jsonA client can launch the stdio MCP bridge with command npx and arguments
["-y", "sysone", "mcp", "--connection", "/private/path/agent.json"].
The bridge exposes sysone_status, sysone_patterns, sysone_run, sysone_decide, sysone_logs, sysone_tree and
sysone_dialogue. Each request uses the credential's services and remaining limits.
If no explicit connection or environment pair is supplied, the CLI reads
~/.config/systemoneengine/agent.json. It never reads a provider credential or
administrator token. Avoid putting tokens directly in command-line arguments.
The engine also exposes Streamable HTTP MCP at /mcp; clients that support it can
connect directly with their supported bearer/OAuth setup. For cloud, run
sysone login first; the stdio bridge then uses that approved connection without
prompting inside MCP. Hosted web clients cannot directly reach loopback.
The opt-in browser companion is included in sysone@0.7.0. Run
npx -y sysone@0.7.0 computer doctor to check its local prerequisites without a
browser action or model call.
Use a local helper with either your cloud account or local engine:
npx -y sysone@0.7.0 computer --connection /private/path/agent.jsonThis is a stdio MCP command. Configure it in an agent that can launch local MCP
servers. It opens a separate Chrome session only when the agent calls
sysone_computer_start. Chrome or Chromium and Node 22.18+ must be installed.
SYSONE_CHROME_PATH can select the executable. No browser download is included.
Run sysone computer doctor to check local setup without a token or model call.
Add --desktop to opt into the experimental read-only Mac accessibility adapter.
The agent receives screenshots and observed control IDs. Jev receives bounded text and Chrome-computed accessibility names, roles, states and group context through the configured engine. Open shadow roots are supported. It proposes the next action. The companion executes caller-authorized actions in its own browser and returns the new screen. A bounded run performs up to 12 decisions in one tool call, then returns its trace and a final screenshot for the agent to verify.
Read the browser example for setup, tool inputs, data flow and supported controls. Web-only agents cannot launch this local helper. The hosted MCP remains a decision service; noVNC and whole-desktop control are future adapters.
- Call
sysone_patternswith{"query":"palette"}to find a recipe. - Call
sysone_runwithpattern,stateand the requiredcandidates. - Read the answers, usage and recipe policy. Keep an uncertain decision with the calling agent.
The engine library includes recipes including item matching, source selection, citation
checks and diagnostic tests. Selection recipes require your own ID-to-description
map. The engine adds a review choice when no candidate fits. Other decision
recipes use fixed questions and need only pattern and state. Use
sysone_patterns with an id to inspect those questions first. Tree, logs and
dialogue use their separate service tools. sysone_decide accepts custom questions.
Examples and research confidence are documented in System One Bench. Confidence ratings describe the evidence behind a use case, not calibrated model probabilities.
The reusable sysone skill explains when to offload bounded
classification, log triage, taxonomy selection and dialogue timing. Copy that skill
folder into your harness's supported skills directory and configure the MCP bridge.
Keep planning, synthesis and ambiguous judgments with the reasoning model. Selected IDs are proposals, not action authority. Preserve unknown confidence and measure the full workflow before claiming cost or latency savings. An extra model call can cost more than a direct deterministic check.

Public input schemas are exported from sysone. Examples are in examples/.
Jev and provider calls happen in the engine, not this client.
The recorded-reaction example shows the pattern used by The Infinite Parable: one choice over eligible recordings, silence as an outcome, a current-scene check and authored fallback. It includes a small host-side helper and failure tests. It never plays audio or changes game state.
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm testMIT licensed. The compiled application runtime is distributed under its separate preview license.
Evaluation and recipe requests accept callerModel and reasoningEffort, for example "callerModel": "gpt-6-astra", "reasoningEffort": "high". Include only values known from the agent configuration; omit unknown values. System One uses them for self-reported, input-only list-price comparisons. They do not change Jev's evaluation. Thinking effort is not treated as a price multiplier. Hosted comparisons require the current server; the launcher pins runtime 0.5.1.
npx sysone@latest login
npx sysone@latest status
npx sysone@latest mcpLogin opens System One Cloud's email sign-in and explicit connection approval. It uses PKCE and a temporary loopback callback, stores scoped credentials in ~/.config/systemoneengine/cloud.json with mode 0600, and selects cloud as the default. It does not start an inference server or require a Vercel key. All your cloud connections share the account's free allowance.
Use sysone mcp --target cloud in a harness's stdio MCP configuration, or sysone computer --target cloud to keep browser observation/actions local while sending bounded decision text to cloud. The computer companion still requires its existing local browser setup.
sysone target local selects your local engine again; --target local overrides the default for one command. Explicit --connection wins; existing SYSONE_URL/SYSONE_TOKEN apply when no explicit target is chosen. sysone app --target cloud opens the hosted dashboard. sysone login --no-open prints the authorization URL; open it on the same machine, since the callback is local.
Access credentials refresh before expiry; evaluation calls are not retried. sysone logout revokes the cloud grant, removes its local credentials and switches to local. If offline, logout reports failure and retains the credential so revocation can be retried. Never paste the credential file into an agent conversation. Existing local connection files remain untouched.
