Closes #5118

Problem

DeduplicatingCollector.Ingest claims the event's deduplication key via IsUnique (SET NX) before the wrapped collector writes the event, and never releases the claim when that write fails. A transient ingest failure followed by the client's documented default retry is then silently dropped as a duplicate: the retry returns success and the event is metered zero times.

Reproduced against current main with the regression test in this PR: with a collector whose first Ingest returns an error, the retry returns nil while nothing is metered.

Fix

Release the dedupe claim when the wrapped ingest returns an error.

  • dedupe.Deduplicator gains Remove(ctx, items...), implemented by both backends. In keyhash-migration mode only the keyhash-format key is removed (the key IsUnique claims); an existing raw-format key may belong to an event ingested before the migration, so it is left untouched.
  • DeduplicatingCollector.Ingest releases the claim on ingest error and returns the original error. The release is best-effort: if it fails, the returned error joins both failures so the event is not dropped silently.

Trade-off: in the ambiguous case where the write actually landed but returned an error, a retry can now produce the event to Kafka twice; sink-side dedup on the same store still meters it once. The status quo instead guarantees a silent under-count on the common transient-failure path.

Tests

  • TestDeduplicatingCollector_ReleasesClaimOnIngestFailure: transient failure, then the retry meters the event exactly once; a genuine duplicate afterwards is still deduplicated. Fails on current main, passes with the fix.
  • TestDeduplicatingCollector_ReleaseFailureIsLoud: a failing release surfaces both errors.
  • TestRemove for memorydedupe and for redisdedupe across all three key modes, including preserving a pre-migration raw key in migration mode.

Verification

  • go build, go vet, and go test -count=1 pass for ./openmeter/dedupe/... and ./openmeter/ingest/... (go 1.27).
  • Not run: the full repo build and test suite, which needs the Kafka/ClickHouse development stack and does not compile in this environment. Both Deduplicator implementations in the repo are updated; interface consumers are unaffected by the added method.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Deduplication now uses ownership-aware claims, which can be released only by their claimant.
    • Claim tokens prevent stale releases from removing newer deduplication records.
    • In-memory and Redis-backed deduplication support claiming and releasing items.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Failed event ingestion no longer permanently blocks valid retries as duplicates.
    • Claims are released after ingestion failures, even if the original request is canceled.
    • Errors during claim release are reported alongside the original ingestion error.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues remain.

Summary

Failed ingestion now releases an owned dedupe claim, allowing a later retry.

  • Failed event writes release their deduplication claim.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The deduplication API now uses ownership-token claims. Memory and Redis implementations release only matching claims. DeduplicatingCollector releases claims after ingestion failures with an independent cleanup context and reports release errors.

Changes

Ownership-aware deduplication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deduplication contract and memory claims
openmeter/dedupe/dedupe.go, openmeter/dedupe/memorydedupe/...
The contract replaces Remove with Claim and Release. The memory implementation stores UUID tokens under mutex protection. Tests cover stale, reacquired, and empty-token claims.
Redis claim ownership
openmeter/dedupe/redisdedupe/...
The Redis implementation stores claim tokens and deletes keys only when the stored token matches. Migration cleanup uses a detached five-second timeout. Tests cover token checks, Redis errors, and migration cleanup paths.
Ingest claim lifecycle
openmeter/ingest/dedupe.go, openmeter/ingest/dedupe_test.go
The collector claims an event before ingestion and releases the claim after ingestion failure. Cleanup uses a five-second timeout derived from context.WithoutCancel. Tests cover retries, joined errors, and canceled request contexts.
