Fixes #4953.

Existing ClickHouse event tables gain the missing store_row_id column. Setup checks schema metadata before adding the column or submitting the background backfill, following the maintainer's requested rollout. The metadata query binds database and table values as parameters.

Connector tests cover existing and missing columns and backfill submission failure. Their named schema-row fixture exposes supported scan destinations and errors explicitly.

Validation in Docker with the repository-pinned Go 1.27.0 and golangci-lint 2.13.1:

  • Focused TestConnectorCreateEventsTable and TestCreateEventsTableAddsStoreRowID tests passed with the dynamic build tag.
  • Modified ClickHouse package build and go vet passed with the dynamic build tag.
  • Configured formatter checks and changed-file whitespace checks passed.
  • The modified package reported zero new lint issues.

The asynchronous rollout decision remains open in the existing pagination discussion: V2 queries use store_row_id as a cursor tie-breaker, and incomplete historical backfills can leave empty IDs. The requested asynchronous behavior is retained pending that decision. No live ClickHouse migration or full test suite was run locally.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

The PR should not merge until the previous incomplete-backfill finding is addressed.

Fix All in Claude CodeFindings

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
openmeter/streaming/clickhouse/event_query.go:59-60
Removing `mutations_sync = 1` lets connector startup finish while historical rows still have an empty `store_row_id`, even though V2 event queries immediately use this field for cursor filtering and ordering. If the asynchronous mutation is interrupted or fails after submission, later startups see that the column exists and skip the backfill entirely. Historical events with the same timestamp can then retain colliding cursors, causing pagination to skip or duplicate events. Keep the backfill synchronous, or verify and retry incomplete rows before serving queries.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

This PR adds an upgrade path for existing ClickHouse event tables while leaving fresh-table creation unchanged.

  • ClickHouse setup fills in store_row_id for older event tables.

Walkthrough

The ClickHouse connector now checks table metadata for store_row_id. It adds and backfills the column only when it is missing. Tests cover SQL generation, execution order, skipped migration, and backfill errors.

Honestly, I am fine adding the column manually for now.

What I don't like here is that just as we miss migrations you are executing a scan on the whole column. I would rather somehow check the schema first (or drop the If not exists from the addStoreRowID and execute the backfill only if there was no error for adding the column)

It's also fine to make this a background mutation as store_row_id is not something the code logic uses, it just helps with manual/job based deduplication etc.

So in this sense I am fine merging the addStoreRowIDSQL without backfill or with the aforementioned logic to prevent full scans.

On the long run we should instead use gomigrate to manage the Clickhouse but I would not bloat the scope of this PR.

Dropped the per-startup om_events scan. Startup now checks system.columns for store_row_id. If the column already exists, ADD COLUMN and backfill are skipped. If it is missing, we ADD COLUMN and submit an async mutation (mutations_sync removed) so connector start does not wait on the backfill. Fresh tables already include the column in CREATE TABLE, so they take the skip path.

I did not add gomigrate.

Docker (Go 1.27.0): gofmt -l clean on the four touched files; go test ./openmeter/streaming/clickhouse -run TestCreateEventsTable and -run TestConnectorCreateEventsTable both pass.

Check system.columns instead of scanning om_events on every startup. Only ADD COLUMN and submit an async UUID backfill when the column is absent.

P1 Backfill Can Remain Incomplete

Removing mutations_sync = 1 lets connector startup finish while historical rows still have an empty store_row_id, even though V2 event queries immediately use this field for cursor filtering and ordering.

Implemented as a mutation. The `ALTER TABLE` prefix makes this syntax different from most other systems supporting SQL. It is intended to signify that unlike similar queries in OLTP databases this is a heavy operation not designed for frequent use. The `filter_expr` must be of type `UInt8`. This query updates values of specified columns to the values of corresponding expressions in rows for which the `filter_expr` takes a non-zero value. Values are cast to the column type using the `CAST` operator. Updating columns that are used in the calculation of the primary or the partition key is not supported. One query can contain several commands separated by commas. The synchronicity of the query processing is defined by the mutations_sync setting. By default, it is asynchronous. DELETE and ALTER TABLE ... UPDATE. They are asynchronous background processes similar to merges in MergeTree tables that to produce new "mutated" versions of parts. For `*MergeTree` tables mutations execute by rewriting whole data parts. There is no atomicity — parts are substituted for mutated parts as soon as they are ready and a `SELECT` query that started executing during a mutation will see data from parts that have already been mutated along with data from parts that have not been mutated yet. Mutations are totally ordered by their creation order and are applied to each part in that order. Mutations are also partially ordered with `INSERT INTO` queries: data that was inserted into the table before the mutation was submitted will be mutated and data that was inserted after that will not be mutated. Note that mutations do not block inserts in any way. A mutation query returns immediately after the mutation entry is added (in case of replicated tables to ZooKeeper, for non-replicated tables - to the filesystem). The mutation itself executes asynchronously using the system profile settings. To track the progress of mutations you can use the `system.mutations` table. A mutation that was successfully submitted will continue to execute even if ClickHouse servers are restarted. There is no way to roll back the mutation once it is submitted, but if the mutation is stuck for some reason it can be cancelled with the `KILL MUTATION` query. Entries for finished mutations are not deleted right away (the number of preserved entries is determined by the `finished_mutations_to_keep` storage engine parameter). Older mutation entries are deleted. Synchronicity of ALTER Queries For non-replicated tables, all `ALTER` queries are performed synchronously. For replicated tables, the query just adds instructions for the appropriate actions to `ZooKeeper`, and the actions themselves are performed as soon as possible. However, the query can wait for these actions to be completed on all the replicas. For `ALTER` queries that creates mutations (e.g.: including, but not limited to `UPDATE`, `DELETE`, `MATERIALIZE INDEX`, `MATERIALIZE PROJECTION`, `MATERIALIZE COLUMN`, `APPLY DELETED MASK`, `APPLY PATCHES`, `CLEAR STATISTIC`, `MATERIALIZE STATISTIC`) the synchronicity is defined by the mutations_sync setting. If we start some incorrect `ALTER` query from `clickhouse-client ` it will hang forever (if `mutations_sync=2` or `alter_repliction_partitions_sync=1 or 2` specified). We need to implement the check of `MutationStatus` and if some exception happened, we should rethrow it to the client. Each mutation command is represented by a single row. # system.mutations Description The table contains information about mutations of MergeTree tables and their progress. Each mutation command is represented by a single row. Columns: - `database` (String) — The name of the database to which the mutation was applied. - `table` (String) — The name of the table to which the mutation was applied. - `mutation_id` (String) — The ID of the mutation. For replicated tables these IDs correspond to znode names in the `<table_path_in_clickhouse_keeper>/mutations/` directory in ClickHouse Keeper. For non-replicated tables the IDs correspond to file names in the data directory of the table. - `command` (String) — The mutation command string (the part of the query after ALTER TABLE [db.]table). - `create_time` (DateTime) — Date and time when the mutation command was submitted for execution. - `block_numbers.partition_id` (Array(String)) — For mutations of replicated tables, the array contains the partitions&`#39`; IDs (one record for each partition). For mutations of non-replicated tables the array is empty. - `block_numbers.number` (Array(Int64)) — For mutations of replicated tables, the array contains one record for each partition, with the block number that was acquired by the mutation. Only parts that contain blocks with numbers less than this number will be mutated in the partition. In non-replicated tables, block numbers in all partitions form a single sequence. This means that for mutations of non-replicated tables, the column will contain one record with a single block number acquired by the mutation. - `parts_in_progress_names` (Array(String)) — An array of names of data parts that are currently being mutated. - `parts_to_do_names` (Array(String)) — An array of names of data parts that need to be mutated for the mutation to complete. - `parts_to_do` (Int64) — The number of data parts that need to be mutated for the mutation to complete. Note: even if `parts_to_do` = 0, a mutation of a replicated table may not be completed yet due to a long-running INSERT that is creating a new data part that will need to be mutated. - `parts_postpone_reasons` (Map(String, String)) — A map of part names to reasons why they are postponed. - `is_done` (UInt8) — The flag whether the mutation is done or not. Possible values: 1 if the mutation is completed, 0 if the mutation is still in process. - `is_killed` (UInt8) — Indicates whether a mutation has been killed. Only available in ClickHouse Cloud.Note: is_killed=1 does not necessarily mean the mutation is completely finalized. It is possible for a mutation to remain in a state where is_killed=1 and is_done=0 for an extended period. This can occur if another long-running mutation is blocking the killed mutation. This is a normal situation. - `latest_failed_part` (String) — The name of the most recent part that could not be mutated. - `latest_fail_time` (DateTime) — The date and time of the most recent part mutation failure. - `latest_fail_reason` (String) — The exception message that caused the most recent part mutation failure. - `latest_fail_error_code_name` (String) — The error code of the exception that caused the most recent part mutation failure. - If a part name is not in `parts_postpone_reasons` and has not yet been mutated, it means the part is yet not scheduled for mutation. - The part name `all_parts` represents all parts that have not yet been mutated. - `is_killed` (UInt8) — Indicates whether a mutation has been killed. Only available in ClickHouse Cloud. `is_killed=1` does not necessarily mean the mutation is completely finalized. It is possible for a mutation to remain in a state where `is…[truncated]

Retry incomplete store_row_id backfills.

After ADD COLUMN succeeds, createEventsTable treats the column's existence as migration completion. A rejected backfill submission, or an accepted asynchronous mutation that later fails, can leave existing rows with empty store_row_id values while later startups skip the backfill. Track backfill completion separately from column existence, and retry failed or unfinished backfills. Add a restart test for this path.

createEventsTable and its migration state handling so store_row_id column
existence is tracked separately from backfill completion; retry the backfill
when submission fails, an asynchronous mutation fails, or existing rows remain
unfilled, while preserving the completed fast path. Add a restart test covering
an incomplete backfill and verifying that the next startup retries it.

The schema check and async mutation requested above are present at 3bcc1da. One current-code detail needs clarification: event_query_v2.go uses store_row_id for cursor filtering and sort tie-breaking. Historical rows can retain empty IDs while the async backfill runs, and subsequent starts skip backfill once the column exists.

Do you want that temporary pagination limitation accepted for an async rollout, or should V2 pagination wait for backfill completion? I have left the async behavior you requested intact pending that decision.

Fixed the test-helper feedback by replacing the mapping closure with a named schema-row fixture. Unsupported scan destinations return explicit errors. The system.columns lookup now binds database and table values, and the orchestration tests check those arguments. Removed the incorrect comment claiming store_row_id is absent from the query path.

Docker checks passed with Go 1.27.0 and golangci-lint 2.13.1: focused connector/SQL tests, modified package build and go vet (all with the dynamic tag), configured formatting, whitespace and zero new lint issues.

The schema-first, asynchronous behavior remains as requested. The V2 pagination/backfill tradeoff was already raised in the existing discussion, which still needs a maintainer decision. This update does not claim that the rollout question is resolved.
