Edit: move, insert and delete vertices on the map - #428
Conversation
Add an Edit Vertices map tool (Edit › Features › Edit Vertices, the Editing pane's Modify section and Editor Tools). The selected features' vertices draw as handles with a midpoint handle on each edge: drag a vertex to move it, drag a midpoint or click an edge to insert one, click a vertex and press Delete to remove it. Lines keep two vertices, polygon rings three. Multipart features and holes work alike, dragged vertices snap, and it works on the globe. Each change is one `edit.vertex` command (move/insert/delete one vertex), which goes through the same checks, attribute rules and undo as `edit.setGeometry`. The vertex helpers live on `Geometry` in rustgis-data. `edit.setGeometry` is relabelled "Set Geometry". Fixes #143

…rtices The tool cloned every selected geometry and built vertex and edge vectors several times a frame. Geometry gains for_each_vertex and for_each_edge, the tool borrows the selected geometries, and only handles inside the map count towards the cap. Layers read in place from their file can't be edited, so their features get no handles. Delete with a chosen vertex that an undo or a selection change has removed falls back to deleting the selected features.

A dragged vertex snapped to its own old position and edges, so small moves snapped back. snap_except leaves the feature being changed out. A vertex let go where it started is no edit and no undo step. Hover hit testing skips features whose extent is nowhere near the pointer.

handle_at runs on every hover frame (via cursor) and on every click and drag start. It calls g.extent() on up to 50 selected features, which is O(vertices) each, and then loops over every vertex and edge with a projection per point. MAX_HANDLES only limits drawing, not this work, and draw also projects every vertex each frame. A selection of a few huge polygons (say 1M vertices) could make the UI stutter. Consider a cap on vertices per feature, or caching extents or screen points. Also, Geometry::paths() allocates a Vec on every vertex() call. Confidence: medium.

Partly addressed in 93d19a4/64aad747: no geometry clones or Vecs per frame, and hover hit-testing only projects features whose extent is near the pointer. Remaining cost is O(vertices) extent scans and projecting on-screen candidates for the selected features; for selections of million-vertex polygons, a per-feature cap or cached screen points would help. That's a design trade-off (a cap means huge features can't be edited), so I'm leaving this open for the maintainer to decide.

- The snap marker uses snap_except with the dragged feature left out, like the drag itself, so it shows where the vertex will go (the cache key includes the excluded feature).
- Undo and redo clear the chosen vertex: after undoing an insertion its index named the next vertex, so Delete removed the wrong one. Regression test vertex_undo_tests::undo_and_redo_clear_the_chosen_vertex.

Performance: handle_at runs every frame on hover (for the cursor, via mapview.rs) and calls g.extent() plus a full for_each_vertex / for_each_edge scan with a projection per vertex on up to 50 selected features. draw likewise walks every vertex and edge each frame; MAX_HANDLES only limits what's drawn, not the iteration. neighbours also allocates edges() and vertices() every frame while dragging, and Geometry::paths() allocates a Vec on each call. With a selected polygon of 100k+ vertices this will make the tool sluggish. Consider skipping the cursor lookup when the pointer hasn't moved, and avoiding the per-frame allocations. Confidence: medium.

handle_at runs on every hover frame through cursor, and draw runs every frame. Both walk every vertex and edge of up to 50 selected features, and paths() and edges() allocate on each call. MAX_HANDLES only limits how many handles get drawn, not how many vertices are visited. Selecting a few detailed polygons (for example country outlines with 100k+ vertices) could make each frame slow. Consider skipping features whose extent is off-screen, and for large geometries skip vertices that are off-screen or cache the screen projection. Confidence: medium.

Same concern as the two open performance threads (lines 81 and 91), left open there for the maintainer: per-frame allocations are gone and hover only projects features near the pointer; bounding the remaining O(vertices) work for 100k+ vertex selections is a design trade-off.
Code reviewThe vertex editing is well built. The geometry helpers are panic-free and the undo path is covered by tests. I found no crash, security or wasm problems. Two minor concerns are inline. I read the diff and Bugs
