#3925 (closed as fixed upstream by h3js/crossws#203)

❓ Type of change

  • 📖 Documentation (updates to the documentation, readme, or JSdoc annotations)
  • 🐞 Bug fix (a non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • 👌 Enhancement (improving an existing functionality like performance)
  • ✨ New feature (a non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • 🧹 Chore (updates to the build process or auxiliary tools and libraries)
  • ⚠️ Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)

📚 Description

This is a follow-up to #3925, as suggested there. Since crossws 0.4.9 (h3js/crossws#203), a WebSocket handler can accept a subprotocol by returning { protocol } from the upgrade hook. Nothing in Nitro tested this, though, and the docs only mentioned it in one table row.

This PR:

  • adds a "Subprotocols" section under the upgrade hook in the WebSocket docs. It has a graphql-transport-ws example and quotes the browser error you get when no subprotocol is accepted.
  • adds regression tests:
    • node-server preset: a handler that returns protocol negotiates it. A handler that doesn't is rejected, the same way a browser would reject it.
    • vite and nitro dev servers: the protocol opt-in is accepted.

I tested this locally on Windows with Node 22 and the rolldown builder. The Bun dev cases skip when Bun isn't installed, and the node-server close-hook and unix-socket tests skip on Windows, so CI will be the first run for those. Note that the node-server test build now enables features.websocket.

📝 Checklist

  • I have linked an issue or discussion.
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly.

Regression coverage for nitrojs#3925 on the node-server preset and the vite/nitro dev servers.

📝 Walkthrough

The WebSocket documentation now describes subprotocol negotiation. Fixtures select graphql-transport-ws when offered, and Node preset and Vite tests check accepted and rejected handshakes.

Changes: WebSocket Subprotocol Negotiation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subprotocol selection and documentation
docs/1.docs/50.websocket.md, test/presets/fixtures/websocket-protocol.ts, test/vite/websocket-fixture/routes/ws-protocol.ts
The documentation describes offered subprotocols and handshake behavior. Both fixtures select graphql-transport-ws when offered and send ready when the peer opens.
Handshake test coverage
test/presets/node.test.ts, test/vite/websocket.test.ts
The Node preset tests check acceptance of graphql-transport-ws and rejection when no protocol is selected. The Vite test checks acceptance of the offered protocol. Both suites use helpers that resolve with the accepted protocol or reject when the handshake fails or times out.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 96c9d

The Node subprotocol test needs correction before merge because it expects a handshake failure that the supported transport does not produce. The documentation should also describe Node’s fallback.

Review comments at @docs/1.docs/50.websocket.md:
- Around line 128-145: Update the WebSocket handshake note to state that both
Bun and the Node `ws` transport select the first offered subprotocol when the
`upgrade` hook returns no protocol; retain the existing Chrome behavior.

Review comments at @test/presets/node.test.ts:
- Around line 100-103: Remove the unsupported rejection assertion for `/_ws`
from the Node preset test; the `ws` transport may accept the
`graphql-transport-ws` subprotocol, so `negotiateProtocol` can resolve instead
of rejecting.
