Unable to create a codespace with message "There are currently no machine types available for this repository."

I am trying to run this in a GitHub codespace. When i try to create a new codespace, I see a message - "There are currently no machine types available for this repository." The https://www.githubstatus.com/ shows healthy for codespaces. Has the .devcontainer image worked for others?

The issue here seems to be limitations in the machines available for free tier GitHub users.
