fix(update): refuse dashboard restart under a systemd unit OpenCodex does not own - #7996
Fixes the fail-closed parts of #7967. Some Linux installs run the proxy under a custom systemd system unit with User= and KillMode=control-group, while an OpenCodex systemd --user unit sits installed but inactive. On such a host, a dashboard update could stop the proxy (HTTP 502), lose its worker along with the service cgroup, and aim its restart at the unrelated user unit. The job file then stayed running with a dead worker PID.
Refuse before any package mutation, with or without restart. The update stops the proxy before it replaces the package, so restart: false is no safe fallback. POST /api/update/run now returns 409 update_restart_unsupervised when the proxy runs inside a systemd service and either condition below holds. The innermost .service or .scope unit in /proc/self/cgroup decides whether the proxy runs inside a service. A .service other than the per-user manager counts, which also catches a unit that unsets INVOCATION_ID. A desktop terminal or app .scope below user@<uid>.service does not count, even when it inherited INVOCATION_ID. Only when no cgroup can be read does INVOCATION_ID alone count, failing closed. The check runs only when an update is actually available, so a source checkout or no-update answer keeps its own refusal. The check is dashboardRestartRefusal in src/update/worker-launch.ts.
No trusted systemd-run --user --scope works, so the worker cannot leave the service cgroup. Before this change the route fell back to a plain spawn that dies with the stop.
The cgroup does not place the proxy in OpenCodex's own opencodex-proxy.service below a user@<uid>.service manager. A delegated child cgroup below that unit is accepted. A system unit reusing the name, any other unit, or an unreadable cgroup is refused.
The error tells the operator to stop the service with its own manager, update the package from a shell, and start the service again.
Status reports a dead worker.GET /api/update/status now reports an active record whose worker PID is gone as failed with the reason (readUpdateJobForStatus), using the same staleActiveUpdateJobReason rule a new run already applied. It does not write: the next run's existing stale recovery settles the persisted record, so a poll can never overwrite a job another process started.
Behavior is unchanged outside systemd, off Linux, and for OpenCodex's own user unit with a working scope launcher.
Not in scope, and still open on #7967: supervised migration from a custom system unit to the user unit, and any system-unit restart. The issue asks for those to need operator authorization. Liveness keeps the existing kill(pid, 0) rule shared with job start. A reused PID keeps a record active, as it already does at job start, and EPERM reads as dead because the worker always runs under the proxy's own account.
Verification
Windows x64 host, Bun 1.4.4, based on deva2ae4825. The supervisor logic is pure and injected, so it runs on any OS.
bun test tests/update/update-worker-launch.test.ts tests/server/update-async-routes.test.ts: 21 pass / 4 existing POSIX-only skips / 0 fail. Cases cover the own user unit (cgroup v2, v1 and a delegated child), a system unit, a system unit reusing the OpenCodex name, other user units, an empty or unreadable cgroup, a unit that unsets INVOCATION_ID, no scope launcher, and outside systemd / off Linux. The route refusal is tested for both restart: true and restart: false, with startUpdateJob and spawnGuiUpdateWorker stubbed to throw so a regression can never launch a real updater.
Red before the source change: with the route and job changes reverted, the 409-before-any-job and dead-worker-status cases failed. The status case also asserts the persisted bytes are unchanged.
Update policy and job suites (update-mutation-scanner, update-mutation-guard, update-capability-policy, update-job, plus the two files above): 386 pass / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan and git diff --check passed.
Not run: a real systemd system-unit update. That needs a Linux host with the reporter's layout, which this Windows host cannot provide. The full local suite was not run because other worktrees share this host.

Walkthrough
The update API checks systemd supervision before starting an update job. Status reads report stale active jobs as failed without changing persisted records. Documentation and tests describe these changes.
Changes: Dashboard update supervision and status reporting
The update route checks systemd service and cgroup conditions before starting a job. If supervision conditions are not met, it returns HTTP 409 with update_restart_unsupervised. Tests and documentation cover the conditions and response.
Stale-job status reporting src/update/job.ts, src/server/management/config-routes.ts, tests/server/update-async-routes.test.ts, structure/gui-and-management-api.md
The status route uses readUpdateJobForStatus to return a failed-status view for stale active jobs without persisting the changed status. Tests verify the response and that the stored record remains unchanged.

The dashboard update refusal still misses a service whose process runs in a delegated subgroup, and a custom unit named like user@…. In those cases an update can stop the proxy and its update worker without the intended 409 refusal. Both cases are uncommon, but they should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Check the systemd hierarchy, not every cgroup entry.
On cgroup v1, /proc/self/cgroup can report different paths for different hierarchies. This check can accept a matching resource-controller path even when the name=systemd entry identifies a different custom system unit. Select the 0:: entry on cgroup v2 or the name=systemd entry on cgroup v1 before checking the unit path.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Service detection misclassifies foreground proxies started from a desktop terminal and refuses their dashboard updates.
Line 208 treats any cgroup path component that ends in .service as proof of a systemd service. The per-user manager unit user@<uid>.service also ends in .service. On a systemd desktop, GNOME, KDE and similar terminals usually run as transient scopes below the user manager. A typical path is /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service/app.slice/.../vte-spawn-….scope. A foreground ocx start from such a terminal therefore gets inService === true.
INVOCATION_ID is normally unset for such a process. Line 211 then returns the "Dashboard update is unavailable … inside a systemd service" refusal, which is the wrong diagnosis. The structure doc and the outside systemd test promise that nothing changes outside systemd. The test only covers session-3.scope, so it does not catch this case. The documented workaround (update from a shell) still works. The misleading refusal still blocks a common Linux workflow.
Exclude the per-user manager component from the service test. The own-unit check on lines 214-218 still needs user@…service as an ancestor, so it is unaffected.

Do not treat a delegated subgroup as the owning unit.
DelegateSubgroup=payload.scope is valid in systemd. The name must be a valid cgroup filename and must not conflict with kernel cgroup attributes. The .scope suffix is not reserved.
When INVOCATION_ID is unset, innermostUnit() returns payload.scope for a path such as .../service.service/payload.scope. inService then misses the owning service, so the update can proceed while its worker remains in the service cgroup.
Resolve the owning .service component instead of treating every suffix-matching subgroup as a unit. Add a regression test for Delegate=yes with DelegateSubgroup=payload.scope.

Exclude only the numeric user manager.
user@opencodex.service is excluded by the user@ prefix check. This makes inService false, so the function returns null before it checks systemdRun, INVOCATION_ID, or managedByOwnUnit. No other logic refuses this exact cgroup path.
The normal manager form is user@<digits>.service, so this is a narrow custom-unit case. When it occurs, the update can bypass the refusal and stop its worker with the proxy.
Use the numeric manager name in both manager checks. Add a regression test for an innermost user@opencodex.service unit.

Maintainer integration into dev (MAINTAINERS.md exception), exact head 3c132b35f3660f73a98487daca33b3cccb60046e.
Review. Seven rounds of fresh gpt-6.1-terra correctness and security review, including a dedicated security review. Each round's correct findings were fixed on this branch:
Refusal scope. It now applies with or without restart, because the update stops the proxy first and restart: false was no safe fallback. The guidance asks the operator to stop the service, update from a shell, and start it again.
Service detection. The innermost .service or .scope unit of the systemd hierarchy decides. A unit that unsets INVOCATION_ID is still seen. A desktop terminal or app scope below user@<uid>.service is not a service, even with an inherited INVOCATION_ID. A delegated child cgroup of the own unit is accepted.
Check ordering. The supervisor is consulted only when an update is available. An earlier head's CI caught this: the GitHub runner itself runs inside a .service, which preempted the source-checkout refusal.
Status.GET /api/update/status reports a dead worker's job as failed without writing it, which removes a cross-process overwrite race.
Test safety. The refusal tests stub startUpdateJob and spawnGuiUpdateWorker to throw, so a regression cannot launch a real updater.
The final review of f8632bf found no code blocker. A fresh review of the 3c132b3 dev merge confirmed that the docs conflict resolution keeps both rows.
Accepted as out of scope.
Liveness keeps the existing kill(pid, 0) rule shared with job start.
The dashboard does not poll status for restart: false jobs. That is pre-existing GUI behavior, and such jobs are now refused in the reported layout anyway.
Union.dev moved after this head (#7931, #7624, #8001). The only file overlap, src/server/management/context.ts, is an interface field. The simulated merge with dev3bda3e5f passed typecheck, structure:check, and the update, layout and ratchet focus (58 pass / 0 fail).
Exact-head CI. Cross-platform run 41060692967 on 3c132b3 completed success (gates, test changed, ci aggregate).
Not run: a real systemd system-unit update on Linux.

Summary
Fixes the fail-closed parts of #7967. Some Linux installs run the proxy under a custom systemd system unit with
User=andKillMode=control-group, while an OpenCodexsystemd --userunit sits installed but inactive. On such a host, a dashboard update could stop the proxy (HTTP 502), lose its worker along with the service cgroup, and aim its restart at the unrelated user unit. The job file then stayedrunningwith a dead worker PID.Refuse before any package mutation, with or without restart. The update stops the proxy before it replaces the package, so
restart: falseis no safe fallback.POST /api/update/runnow returns 409update_restart_unsupervisedwhen the proxy runs inside a systemd service and either condition below holds. The innermost.serviceor.scopeunit in/proc/self/cgroupdecides whether the proxy runs inside a service. A.serviceother than the per-user manager counts, which also catches a unit that unsetsINVOCATION_ID. A desktop terminal or app.scopebelowuser@<uid>.servicedoes not count, even when it inheritedINVOCATION_ID. Only when no cgroup can be read doesINVOCATION_IDalone count, failing closed. The check runs only when an update is actually available, so a source checkout or no-update answer keeps its own refusal. The check isdashboardRestartRefusalinsrc/update/worker-launch.ts.systemd-run --user --scopeworks, so the worker cannot leave the service cgroup. Before this change the route fell back to a plain spawn that dies with the stop.opencodex-proxy.servicebelow auser@<uid>.servicemanager. A delegated child cgroup below that unit is accepted. A system unit reusing the name, any other unit, or an unreadable cgroup is refused. The error tells the operator to stop the service with its own manager, update the package from a shell, and start the service again.
Status reports a dead worker.
GET /api/update/statusnow reports an active record whose worker PID is gone asfailedwith the reason (readUpdateJobForStatus), using the samestaleActiveUpdateJobReasonrule a new run already applied. It does not write: the next run's existing stale recovery settles the persisted record, so a poll can never overwrite a job another process started.Behavior is unchanged outside systemd, off Linux, and for OpenCodex's own user unit with a working scope launcher.
Not in scope, and still open on #7967: supervised migration from a custom system unit to the user unit, and any system-unit restart. The issue asks for those to need operator authorization. Liveness keeps the existing
kill(pid, 0)rule shared with job start. A reused PID keeps a record active, as it already does at job start, andEPERMreads as dead because the worker always runs under the proxy's own account.Verification

Cases cover the own user unit (cgroup v2, v1 and a delegated child), a system unit, a system unit reusing the OpenCodex name, other user units, an empty or unreadable cgroup, a unit that unsetsINVOCATION_ID, no scope launcher, and outside systemd / off Linux. The route refusal is tested for bothrestart: trueandrestart: false, withstartUpdateJobandspawnGuiUpdateWorkerstubbed to throw so a regression can never launch a real updater.update-mutation-scanner,update-mutation-guard,update-capability-policy,update-job, plus the two files above): 386 pass / 0 fail.bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scanandgit diff --checkpassed.Not run: a real systemd system-unit update. That needs a Linux host with the reporter's layout, which this Windows host cannot provide. The full local suite was not run because other worktrees share this host.
