Summary

  • Separate journal/endpoint preservation from killable PID evidence in cli-start-owner-evidence.test.ts. F3 IPv4/IPv6 and F5 each exercise explicitly verified and unreadable command-line evidence. The existing process-command-line IO seam supplies deterministic evidence while the real verifier, live processes, HTTP listeners, recovery, lease, and journal logic run. Setup asserts the evidence precondition with PID, command line, verifier result, and probe-count diagnostics; every branch runs its assertions. F4 supplies a readable foreign command line deterministically and still proves that recovery leaves the foreign process alive.
  • Label Desktop snapshot, pre-restart inference, post-restart saved-ID inference, and initial/restarted readiness failures. Fetch and body consumption use the existing 30-second server budget on Windows; POSIX retains the original 5-second/10-second fetch budgets. All model, profile, authentication-output, inference, and network-guard assertions remain.
  • Test-only changes, based on origin/dev at 7eab2439c1aba2e387f97bcec82d5aaf813ee1c4. No product defect established. Existing files retain their layout registration; neither the ratchet baseline nor CI policy changes.

Hosted evidence, both attempt 1, read before implementation:

Run / dev head F3 IPv4 / IPv6 F4 reused PID F5 Desktop stored=true / false
40679924613, 508349e5166bc2ed3e8da63f855ceb8bbefea9e6 fail 7443.91 / 7864.71 ms fail 20050.71 ms fail 7715.10 ms timeout 12509.28 / pass 20240.21 ms
40708434824, 7eab2439c1aba2e387f97bcec82d5aaf813ee1c4 fail 7620.22 / 8062.25 ms fail 19852.20 ms fail 7174.36 ms timeout 12314.50 / pass 21638.55 ms

Windows 2/9 reports Expected and actual values must be numbers or bigints at the unconditional positive-PID assertion, and F4 reports Expected: true / Received: false for command-line readability. Windows 3/9 reports an unlabelled TimeoutError: The operation timed out. These Desktop timings are whole-case durations, not measurements of an identified fetch phase. The Windows 30-second per-fetch ceiling exceeds even the 21.64-second passing companion's entire case; phase labels now identify future failures. No retries were added.

Verification

Windows host, Bun 1.4.4; bun install --frozen-lockfile passed before testing. Every test command used $env:OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE = '1'; test invocations ran sequentially, one primary Bun test process at a time.

Commands repeated three times before changes and at least three times after:

bun run test tests/cli/cli-start-owner-evidence.test.ts
bun run test tests/claude-integration/claude-desktop-remote-hub.test.ts
File Baseline: three file durations Final: three file durations Results per run
CLI owner evidence 12.08 / 10.76 / 8.38 s 7.53 / 7.68 / 8.70 s before 5 pass, 0 fail, 41 assertions; after 8 pass, 0 fail, 97 assertions
Desktop remote hub 28.92 / 24.17 / 22.61 s 21.72 / 22.67 / 23.89 s before and after 2 pass, 0 fail, 45 assertions

Two earlier after runs also passed (CLI 8.81/7.88 s). The first edited CLI run caught an F2 fixture-precondition mismatch (7 pass/1 fail); its setup was corrected before the final runs. The original hosted slowdown does not reproduce naturally on this host.

Additional checks:

  • bun run typecheck: passed, 2,227 files, zero type errors.
  • bun run test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 38 pass, 0 fail, 664 assertions.
  • bun run test tests/cli/cli-start-owner-absence.test.ts: 8 pass, 0 fail, 82 assertions. An earlier command named a nonexistent cli-start-owner-fence.test.ts; it matched no files and supplied no test evidence.
  • bun run privacy:scan: passed.
  • git diff --check: passed.
  • Scratch-only legacy-oracle replay: inject unreadable command-line IO into the original test, then run its F3/F5 cases. All three fail with the exact hosted numeric-PID error. The final test exercises that unreadable state successfully alongside the verified cases; no assertions are conditionally skipped for unavailable identity.
  • Scratch-only Desktop negative control: replace only the post-restart request's saved ID with an invalid fixture ID. The stored-profile case fails the retained exact chosen.inference assertion because the second chosen-provider call is absent. The longer fetch budget does not hide wrong saved-ID routing. Production files were not modified for either control.

NOT RUN: full local suite, macOS/Linux native execution, or hosted Windows execution of this patch. The approximately 2,770-file full suite was disproportionate alongside the required serial native repetitions on this shared Windows host; focused native files, the adjacent recovery regression, typecheck, and repository guards provide the local scope. Remaining coverage belongs to normal PR CI and a future maintainer batch; no CI rerun or manual dispatch was requested. No merge performed.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (Test-only; no user-facing behavior changes.)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (Runtime/auth/installation/workflow code unchanged; isolated fixture credentials and existing network guards retained; privacy scan passed.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded remote hub integration coverage for startup readiness, snapshot and inference responses, and timeout handling, including response-body consumption and platform-specific timing budgets.
    • Added CLI recovery scenarios covering verified and unreadable process identity evidence, with checks for identity-probe results and expected live process identifiers.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the Windows budget to the internal apply download.

fetchPhase does not cover the spawned CLI. Connected apply calls downloadDesktop3pModels(baseUrl, token) without options, so the request and response body use the 5-second default. If either exceeds 5 seconds, apply returns failure and the child exits with code 1. The 45-second child wait cannot extend this inner timeout.

Suggested fix
-      snapshot = await (deps.downloadDesktop3pModelsImpl ?? downloadDesktop3pModels)(baseUrl, token.token);
+ snapshot = await (deps.downloadDesktop3pModelsImpl ?? downloadDesktop3pModels)(
+ baseUrl,
+ token.token,
+        process.platform === "win32" ? { timeoutMs: 30_000 } : {},

Not applying this one; it would change production behavior that the observed failure does not implicate.

  • The suggestion edits the connected-apply call in src/ so Windows users get a 30s Desktop model download instead of the 5s default. That is a user-facing timeout change, outside this test-only PR.
  • The hosted failures in runs 40679924613 and 40708434824 were a TimeoutError raised by the test's own fetch (AbortSignal.timeout). When the spawned CLI's download fails, the child instead exits with "Remote Desktop apply failed: …", which did not occur in either run.
  • fetchPhase now labels each test-side phase, so if the spawned apply ever becomes the slow step on a native runner, the failure will name it and the production timeout can be revisited with that evidence.
