fix(test): judge protected-tree containment per path component - #7884
src/lib/test-home-guard.ts protects the real OpenCodex, Codex, Claude and LaunchAgents trees from test removals. Its isInside() helper decided containment with !rel.startsWith(".."), which is a string-prefix test. A direct child whose name begins with two dots, such as ~/.opencodex/..backup, has the relative path ..backup, so it was judged outside the tree and assertRemovalOutsideProtectedTrees() let the removal through. Separately, the equality checks for the protected homes were case-sensitive, so on Windows and macOS a not-yet-existing case variant such as .OPENCODEX (which canonicalizes through its parent and keeps its spelling) compared unequal.
Protection decisions now use the comparison the Claude tree checks already used: only a leading .. path component leaves the root, and case is folded where the platform's default filesystem folds it (Windows and macOS). POSIX behaviour is unchanged.
The one exception is the checkout exemption (isOwnCheckoutContent), which lifts a refusal so a worktree under ~/.codex/worktrees/ can clean its own fixtures. It compares case exactly, per component. Folding there would let a checkout at ~/.codex/worktrees/repo exempt a distinct ~/.codex/worktrees/REPO on a case-sensitive APFS volume. Comparing broadly is the safe direction for a refusal and the unsafe one for an exemption.
..backup regression, red on dev's guard: bun test tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts -t "removal that reaches" → 0 pass / 1 fail, Received: null at test-home-guard.test.ts:746. Green on this branch: 1 pass / 0 fail.
Case-colliding sibling regression ("on a case-folding platform the checkout exemption still compares case exactly"). The probe reports darwin before loading the guard on a POSIX host, so the guard folds while path comparison stays exact, which models a case-sensitive macOS volume. Run under Linux (WSL Ubuntu, Bun 1.4.4): red with the first commit's guard (794e8b71b): "caseSibling": false, i.e. the sibling was exempted. Green on this head: 3 pass / 0 fail together with the existing checkout-content and removal cases. Windows skips this case because path.relative ignores case there regardless of the guard.
bun run typecheck: no type errors in 2,227 files. git diff --check: clean.
Because this guard is imported by almost every test, test changed selects the whole suite here (2,324 files). Earlier heads failed one test that small selections never ran: tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts, whose fixture compiles a Rust program. Once the compiler's stderr was reported (c969dd3a1), the cause was clear: rustup could not choose a version of rustc to run ... no default is configured. rustc on the runner is a rustup proxy that resolves its toolchain under $HOME when RUSTUP_HOME/CARGO_HOME are unset, and the test preload points HOME at a sandbox. 0280f5755 sets both for that one spawn from the real home (OCX_REAL_HOME, captured before HOME is rewritten), unless they are already set. Hosted test changed on 0280f5755: 50,829 tests across 2,324 files, 0 failures; the compile test ran and passed in 9.6 s. Why the same test passed in the sharded run of another PR is not established.
Not run locally: the whole test-home-guard.test.ts file under this host's parallel load (its child-probe cases time out at 5 s with or without this change), and the full suite. Both are left to CI. Native macOS was also not run.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (Test-only guard; no user-facing docs.)
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (Independent review R1 found the exemption widening; it is fixed here and R2 passed on e3b0581c7.)
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved protected-path matching on macOS and Windows when paths differ only by letter casing, including paths that do not yet exist.
Corrected path boundary checks so similarly named locations are not incorrectly matched, while preserving the checkout-content exception where appropriate.
Improved consistency when comparing protected locations by their canonical or original paths.
Supersedes #7879, which reached the same fix independently.
isInside() treated any relative path starting with ".." as outside the
parent, so a direct child such as ~/.opencodex/..backup passed the removal
guard. Equality checks for the protected homes were also case-sensitive on
case-insensitive filesystems. Both now use the component-aware, case-folding
comparison the Claude tree checks already used.

Walkthrough
The home guard now uses platform-aware path equality and component-aware containment for protected paths. Tests cover dot-prefixed descendants, case variants, and checkout exemptions. The desktop recovery test now sets Rust tool directories from the configured or current home and checks compiler stderr alongside exit codes.

Explanation
Issue #7853 has two coding requirements. src/lib/test-home-guard.ts now uses isSameOrInsideIgnoringPlatformCase() for removal containment. The helper compares relative path components, so ..backup is inside the protected root and only a leading .. component leaves the root. The helper feeds protectedRemovalReason() and assertRemovalOutsideProtectedTrees().
The same file uses samePathIgnoringPlatformCase() for protected OpenCodex, Codex, Claude, and LaunchAgents equality checks. foldPlatformCase() folds case on darwin and win32 and preserves case on POSIX. This covers not-yet-existing case variants after canonicalization. The checkout exemption uses case-preserving comparison, so the exemption does not widen on a case-sensitive volume.
tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts adds the ..-prefixed child regression and case-variant and case-colliding sibling checks. The supplied verification reports those checks passing, plus a hosted changed-test run with 50,829 passing tests. The unrun native macOS and local full-suite checks are verification limits, not concrete unmet requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts contains changes unrelated to issue #7853. The changes import userInfo, construct RUSTUP_HOME and CARGO_HOME, pass that environment to the Rust rustc spawn, and add compiler stderr and exit-code details to assertions. They do not implement protected-tree containment, platform-case comparison, or guard regression coverage.
The PR explains that the change fixes a Rustup lookup failure during the broad test changed run. That explains why the test changed, but it does not connect the Rust toolchain setup to the linked issue's coding requirements. The guard tests already provide the relevant support for #7853.
Resolution
Remove the Rust environment and assertion changes from tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts. Keep the guard implementation and its focused tests in this PR. Submit the Rust toolchain test fix separately with an issue that defines that requirement.

CI note on 794e8b71b: test changed ran 50,828 tests across 2,324 files with one failure, unrelated to this diff:
tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts:333, "compiled bundled CLI verifies real native recovery and ignores a protocol-speaking renamed outsider". expect(rustBuild.exitCode).toBe(0) received 1, and the whole test took 62 ms. The test compiles a small std-only Rust program around desktop/src-tauri/src/recovery_presence.rs with the runner's bare rustc.
This PR changes only src/lib/test-home-guard.ts and its test. test changed selected the desktop-recovery file only because the guard is imported almost everywhere. Nothing in the guard reaches a rustc invocation.
The test discards rustc's stderr, so this log cannot say why the compiler exited 1 in 62 ms. A fast exit like that is more consistent with the toolchain shim failing to start than with a compile error. Printing rustBuild.stderr in the assertion message would make the next occurrence diagnosable. I have left that out of this PR to keep its scope.
I have not rerun the job. The PR stays a draft until its independent review returns.
Review of the component-aware containment change found that case folding
also reached isOwnCheckoutContent(). On macOS the guard folds case, so on a
case-sensitive APFS volume a running checkout at ~/.codex/worktrees/repo
exempted a distinct sibling ~/.codex/worktrees/REPO from the removal guard.
Protection decisions keep folding, since comparing broadly only refuses
more. The exemption, which lifts a refusal, now compares case exactly and
per path component. The new probe reports darwin before loading the guard
on a POSIX host, which models that volume; it fails on the previous head
(caseSibling exempted) and passes here. Windows skips it because
path.relative ignores case there regardless of the guard.
…e fails to build
tests/service/service-desktop-recovery.test.ts compiles a std-only Rust
program and a Bun executable before exercising native Desktop recovery.
On #7884's full-selection `test changed` runs, rustc exited 1 in about
52ms with its stderr discarded, so the failure could not be told apart
from a toolchain that never started. The assertions now carry the last
2,000 bytes of each compiler's stderr. Exit code 0 is still required.
…e native recovery fixture
With compiler stderr now reported, #7884's full-selection `test changed`
run showed the cause of the 52-86 ms rustc failures:
error: rustup could not choose a version of rustc to run, because one
wasn't specified explicitly, and no default is configured.
rustc on the runner is a rustup proxy. With RUSTUP_HOME and CARGO_HOME
unset it resolves its toolchain under $HOME, and the test preload points
HOME at a sandbox. The fixture's rustc spawn now sets both to the real
home's .rustup and .cargo (OCX_REAL_HOME, captured by the harness before
HOME is rewritten, falling back to the passwd home) unless they are
already set. The compile and every assertion are unchanged.

basename(REPO_ROOT).toUpperCase() returns the same name for a checkout
that is already uppercase, so the probe reported distinct: false and
failed even with a correct guard. Flip the case of every letter instead,
and skip only when the name has no cased letter, where a case-colliding
sibling cannot exist. Reported by CodeRabbit on #7884.
CI note on e0d6fccef: test changed ran 50,829 tests across 2,324 files with two failures. Neither is related to this diff (the only change since the fully green 0280f5755 run is the case-flip edit inside tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts):
tests/providers/codebuddy-adapter.test.ts: "an in-flight abort kills the child process gracefully with SIGTERM". Timed out after Bun's default 5,000 ms (6,031 ms).
tests/providers/codebuddy-mcp-server.test.ts: "compiled ocx exposes the same capture-only catalog". Timed out after 5,000 ms (5,018 ms).
Both spawn real children under the default per-test timeout and have no headroom in a full-suite run. Their durations in this PR's earlier full-selection runs:

Giving them a proper budget (or warming their cold spawn) is outside this PR, so I'm leaving it to those tests' owners. I'm rerunning only the failed job, on the same head.
#7879 by @lee3Q reached the same component-aware protected-tree check independently; this PR lands the maintainer version and closes it as a duplicate.

Reviewed the complete two-file diff at b43f3cbc3aa7d6f4861cb9285369e9b4b1c19323, including every new guard regression and the checkout-exemption direction. Independent official Bun 1.4.4 run with matching frozen dependencies, private homes and hard cgroups:
bun test --isolate tests/ci-workflows/test-home-guard.test.ts -t "removal that reaches|case-folding platform the checkout exemption|checkout that contains" -> 3 pass, 0 fail, 27 assertions (24 unrelated cases filtered out). bun check --no-script --noEmit -> pass.
The component-aware deny comparison includes ..backup; the exact-case checkout exemption continues refusing a distinct case-colliding sibling while permitting owned checkout content. The platform-spelling probe is a synthetic comparison check on Linux, not a native APFS/NTFS run. No real protected-tree removal or write was performed.
No scoped correctness finding remains, but the current exact-head test changed job is still in progress. Keeping COMMENT until that job completes; old green selection runs or source-only assertions are not a substitute. #7853 remains open until a reviewed fix actually lands. The overlapping #7879 is a separate open candidate; this review does not select, merge or close either author's work.

Head follow-up at c9b120988bb7a6e07d04d1e444d1fcecfcdd286e: compared the complete delta from my reviewed b43f3cbc3aa7d6f4861cb9285369e9b4b1c19323. The guard implementation and its regressions are byte-identical; the only added change is the CodeBuddy fixture's one-shot fed guard, preventing repeated partial writes and abort timers.
Independent bounded/private-home Bun 1.4.4 run: bun test --isolate tests/providers/codebuddy-adapter.test.ts -t "an in-flight abort kills the child process gracefully with SIGTERM" -> 1 pass, 0 fail, 4 assertions. The previous guard regressions (3 pass/27 assertions) and typecheck apply to the unchanged guard/source; I did not rerun those passing checks.
The latest exact-head test changed job 123293346696 has now failed: tests/claude-integration/claude-native-passthrough.test.ts:261 expects HTTP 200 for the native picker alias but received 504 (51,070 pass, 339 skip, 1 fail). This is not the CodeBuddy test. Please diagnose the native passthrough/fixture failure and retain the routing/status assertions; an isolated pass would not alone explain the hosted failure. I have not established whether it is a PR regression or a pre-existing timing problem.
Keeping COMMENT and withholding approval until the current required CI is addressed. #7853 remains open until a fix lands; #7879 is still a separate candidate.
Diagnosis of the claude-native-passthrough.test.ts:261 504 (job 123293346696): it is a timing problem in the test fixture, not a regression from this PR. This PR changes only src/lib/test-home-guard.ts and its test. The native passthrough path is untouched.
cfg() in that file gave every case a 250ms upstream header deadline (connectTimeoutMs: 250). Only the an upstream that never sends headers case needs it. The success-path cases, including the picker-alias case, therefore returned 504 whenever the local mock upstream answered later than 250ms. That happens in this PR's single-job full-suite test changed run, which executes all ~51k tests because the guard is imported everywhere. The same case also failed once locally during the #7913 dev merge, on a branch that does not contain this change.
Fix: #7951 makes INTERNAL_DEADLINE_MS the fixture default, and the header-timeout case now asks for 250ms explicitly. The routing and status assertions are kept: the alias case still expects 200 on both Messages endpoints and the captured native model. Red-before-green on Windows with the mock upstream delayed 300ms: the 4 alias cases fail with Received: 504 before and pass after. The full file passes 72 / 0 with the change.
Once #7951 lands I will merge dev into this branch for a fresh exact-head test changed run, and will not rerun the failed job.
