fix(codex): address Windows updater release and observation reviews - #7875
Partially addresses #7872: items 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are implemented and verified in this candidate. Item 2 remains open. This does not close#7872 or establish installed-product/release acceptance.
An ACL-only apply-lock verification failure now attempts cleanup through the original identity/token-fenced handles while preserving the failed ACL diagnostic. Identity mismatch, failed disposition, failed native close, remaining staging and uncertain children remain fail-closed.
Disposal tracks both original held objects' successful delete-on-close operations, zero pins and absent staging. A new lock at the same pathname survives without retaining the old Worker. Native regressions reproduce the old retained-Worker result and prove the actual offline apply Worker closes after the fix.
Preserve exact bigint directory identities across ACL awaits; admit canonical private OS-temp retention roots while retaining execution authorization and unsafe-root refusal; complete four structure ownership entries; restore the candidate-version-matches-manifest clause in all four Chinese CLI/agent paragraphs.
Native ACL-only cleanup, repeated release, identity mismatch/pin cleanup, same-prefix second actual offline apply; replacement-lock Worker regression and both disposition-refusal cases.
2. Synchronous parent-admission recovery ACL work
Not done / deferred
beginCodexCliSelectionParentWrite() still calls synchronous codexCliUpdateRecoveryBlocksAdmission(); Windows recovery-store verification still uses synchronous ACL/PowerShell work. No async caller migration or event-loop-progress acceptance is claimed.
3. Directory identity precision
Done
Adjacent identities beyond 2^53 remain distinct; identity change during the actual ACL await refuses observation. Both tests fail on pre-fix source.
4. Retention fixture root contract
Done
Nested private canonical OS-temp admission passes; unsafe spellings, junction alias and denied ACL refuse. Restoring the old direct-drive-child restriction fails the acceptance cases.
5. Structure source map
Done
Four ownership paths present; regenerated index matches; structure gate passes.
6. Chinese POSIX managed condition
Done
All four zh-cn/zh-tw CLI and agent paragraphs contain the reported-candidate-version-matches-manifest condition while retaining ownership and selectionAttested wording.
These are candidate dispositions, not a maintainer decision to close the tracking issue. Item 2 requires coordinated async admission/caller migration with gate generation ownership held across ACL awaits, fresh evidence, denial/cancellation cleanup and native concurrency/event-loop validation.
Verification
Native Windows x64, pinned Bun 1.4.4, repository preload and isolated offline fixtures. bun install --frozen-lockfile passed. One Bun test invocation at a time, OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1; no retries or skips added.
Complete native updater selection: 436 passed / 65 skipped / 0 failed across all 18 updater test files plus Windows job-store and both CLI boundary files. The skips are existing platform-gated cases; all Windows review and pending-child adoption cases executed.
Test-layout/tooling and both ratchet files: 54 passed / 0 skipped / 0 failed.
Commands:

bun run typecheck
bun run structure:check
bun run privacy:scan
New disposal regression: RED 2 fail / 2 pass, then GREEN 11 pass / 0 fail before adding the final close/staging cases.
Actual replacement-lock apply Worker: old merged contributor source 1 fail (leaseRetained: true, lease_release_unverified); fixed source 1 pass / 0 fail, actual Worker close and replacement-owner bytes verified.
Original runtime-fix ablations: 5 expected failures for ACL cleanup, directory precision/ACL-await change, and old drive-root retention restriction; fixed versions included in the final suite above.
bun run typecheck: 2,227 files, passed. bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan, move/adoption byte checks and git diff --check passed. Independent security/correctness source review: PASS, 0 blockers; this does not substitute for explicit maintainer security acceptance.
Full repository suite is impractical alongside concurrent Windows worktrees; the complete requested updater selection and relevant boundary/gate tests provide scoped local coverage. Remaining cross-platform/dependent coverage belongs to current-head PR CI. NOT RUN: full repository suite, docs-site build, opt-in full retention-session harness, installed vendor Codex/update acceptance, cross-account or filtered-token acceptance. Current-head hosted CI and maintainer reviews remain separate. No merge, Git-config mutation, rebase/force-push, CI dispatch or CI rerun.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults — independent agent review passed; explicit maintainer security acceptance remains pending.
Review readiness
Required scoped local validation passed and its scope/platform limits are documented.
Current dev was brought in by a normal merge commit at the verification checkpoint.
Current-head hosted checks and automated review disposition are complete.
Ready-for-review confirmation after the remaining checks and maintainer security acceptance.

Bug Fixes
Improved Windows CLI update cleanup so locks and temporary resources are tracked separately from ACL verification results. Update processing retains its execution lease when resources cannot be confirmed as released, while ACL-related cleanup errors remain visible.
Improved Windows update package checks to use precise file identity and size measurements.
Documentation
Clarified that on POSIX, managed is true only when the reported candidate version matches the associated npm package manifest version.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 10 included reviews per hour; 5 remain after this review.
Walkthrough
Windows updater cleanup now distinguishes ACL verification results from resource disposal. Filesystem observations use bigint metadata. New tests cover authority release, lock replacement, identity checks, and retention-root validation. Chinese CLI documentation adds a POSIX candidate-version match condition for managed.
Installation observations use bigint metadata for identities and size checks. Tests cover large identities and identity changes during ACL observation.
Authority release reports ACL verification separately from whether resources were released. Apply cleanup retains the owner and execution lease when tracked resources remain. Tests cover ACL failures, identity changes, lock replacement, and later acquisition.
Test helpers validate retention roots against the temporary directory, real path, directory type, and private-entry verification. The worker and tests use the validation.

The Chinese references now state that when a candidate version is reported, it must match the associated npm-global manifest version for POSIX managed status.
#7872: The PR changes authority release, directory identity, retention-root validation, source mappings, and Chinese POSIX documentation covered by the issue. Synchronous parent-admission ACL work remains outside these changes.

The changes remain connected to #7872. Authority disposal changes and Windows apply tests address item 1. BigInt identity changes and retention-root helpers address items 3 and 4. structure/INDEX.md, structure/manifest.json, and structure/codex-cli-update.md address item 5. The four Chinese documentation changes address item 6. Test-layout updates and shared fixture changes support these tests and do not add unrelated product behavior.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR addresses #7872 items 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6. The direct requirement for item 2 remains unmet. In src/codex/cli-update-selection-gate.ts, beginCodexCliSelectionParentWrite() calls synchronous codexCliUpdateRecoveryBlocksAdmission(). In src/codex/cli-update-recovery.ts, that admission check performs synchronous filesystem and Windows recovery-store work. The PR does not provide the required asynchronous caller migration or the required event-loop, denial, cancellation/cleanup, and concurrent parent/worker validation.
Resolution
Complete item 2 of #7872. Move recovery ACL and PowerShell work off the parent event loop. Preserve gate and pin ownership and fail-closed admission. Add Windows tests for event-loop progress, denial, cancellation and cleanup, and concurrent parent/worker admission.

Current-head CI follow-up for 1a8c8c2aa7d3b9cf839d2b977aeeb3a0ed446606: run 40637294893, attempt 1, failed only test 2/4 and the dependent aggregate. The other three Ubuntu shards passed.
The failed case is the existing compiled bundled CLI verifies real native recovery and ignores a protocol-speaking renamed outsider. It failed before product execution at the Rust fixture build: Bun.spawnSync(..., timeout: 30_000) returned exitCode: null after about 30.0 seconds. The fixture/test, included Rust module and this build call are unchanged by this PR. The identical case actually passed in the adjacent #7874 run in 7.696 seconds: job 122646949118. This narrows the failure to fixture compilation but does not establish its host-level cause.
One diagnostic retry was made of only the failed job (and its dependent aggregate), without changing code, assertions or timeouts and without rerunning successful jobs. Attempt 2 completed successfully at 05:45 UTC: test 2/4 job 122651146879, followed by a successful aggregate. The previously failing real native recovery case passed in 10.179 seconds. All four Ubuntu shards now have successful results for this exact head.
The original fixture-compilation failure remains recorded above. The successful bounded retry does not establish its host-level root cause or provide native Windows/macOS acceptance. Local native reproduction remains unavailable because this environment has no Rust compiler. Automated review and explicit maintainer/security acceptance are separate remaining conditions.
Maintainer update: I pushed two commits on top of 1a8c8c2aa as a fast-forward (your commits are unchanged). Head is now 892c6e09f.
An independent security review of 1a8c8c2aa found one blocker, for #7872 item 1. After staging and toolchain cleanup succeeded, an ACL-only failure in release() could delete the owned lock and close every pin, yet still return false. cli-update-windows-apply.ts then kept the worker's execution token (leaseRetained: true), so the worker could not close and the apply could end as job_result_unknown. Terminal recovery could not clear that state either.
7fbd8efc0 separates the ACL diagnostic from proof that the resources are gone. Release now reports resourcesReleased only once the identity- and token-fenced release has completed, the pin set is empty, and staging and the lock are absent. Apply and terminal recovery release the execution token on that proof, and the cleanup diagnostic stays in the result. Identity failures, failed closes, staging/toolchain uncertainty and unknown child lifetime still keep the lease.
892c6e09f requires ENOENT to prove the lock is absent: an unreadable lock namespace is no longer counted as "gone".
Evidence (pinned Bun 1.4.4, Windows):
The ACL-fault Worker regression fails before the fix (outcome applied, cleanupErrors: [lease_release_unverified], leaseRetained: true). After it, the Worker actually closes, the diagnostic is preserved, and a second apply to the same prefix succeeds. The unreadable-namespace case fails on 7fbd8efc0 (resourcesReleased true) and passes on 892c6e09f.
The four-file focused set (codex-cli-update-windows-review, -apply, -recovery, windows-codex-cli-job-store): 71 pass / 0 fail. An earlier run showed 3 failures. A fault control reproduces all three identically on dev, on 1a8c8c2aa and on this head: a retained version owner from a previous case makes recovery count 1 instead of 0, which then leaves pins behind (EBUSY, cleanup timeout). That cascade is pre-existing. One spontaneous version_process_state_unknown did not recur in isolated runs or 60 native probes and remains unattributed.
typecheck, structure:check, privacy:scan, file-size ratchet and git diff --check: pass.
Not run: local test:changed (it reached the existing 900 s limit behind other runs on this shared host), the full suite, and vendor Codex acceptance.
Item 2 of #7872 (synchronous recovery ACL work on parent admission) stays deferred, as this PR's description says. A fresh independent security review of this head is starting.
