fix(config): re-arm the atomic writer's ACL timeout memo - #7843
atomicWriteFile hardens its temp file with { required: true, timeoutMemoKey } at five call sites (src/config/atomic-write.ts), but none passed retryTimedOutOnce. After a single icacls timeout the consumed memo refused every later write to that destination for the life of the process — no icacls attempt, no log (required: true throws into the best-effort persisters that swallow it). #3522 added the five-minute re-arm for the response-spill directory; the general atomic writer never got it.
Change
All five harden calls now pass retryTimedOutOnce: true. A recovered icacls lets the next write land; a still-stalled runner costs at most one bounded attempt per destination per TIMEOUT_MEMO_REARM_MS window. The full harden still has to succeed before the rename, so a write never publishes without its ACL.
Verification
Reproduced with the script from the issue (Bun 1.4.4, Windows 11), before and after:
before after
2 icacls stall refused 2 icacls stall refused
3 icacls healthy again refused 3 icacls healthy again written
4 one hour later refused 4 one hour later written
Regression test added to tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts ("the default atomic writer retries a destination whose memo timed out (#7834)"): a stalled harden through the default writer path (setWindowsHardeningForTests + fake runner), then a healthy runner, then a second write to the same destination must land. The neighbouring destination-memo test uses a test-local harden lambda, which is why it could not catch this.
Commands run:
bun test tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts → 174 pass / 0 fail (871 assertions);
with src/config/atomic-write.ts reverted, the new test fails with ACL hardening skipped — previous attempt timed out;
bun run typecheck (bun x tsc --noEmit) → exit 0.
Not run: the full bun run test suite (this checkout is a Windows box; the focused domain suite plus typecheck is what the contributing guide asks for a change of this size).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved file-saving reliability when Windows security checks time out. Supported write paths now retry the primary security check once, allowing a write to proceed if the retry succeeds.
A timed-out write attempt no longer prevents a later write to the same destination from succeeding when the timeout condition clears.

`atomicWriteFile` hardens its temp file with `{ required: true, timeoutMemoKey }`
at five call sites, but none of them passed `retryTimedOutOnce`. After one icacls
timeout the consumed memo therefore refused every later write to that
destination for the life of the process: no new icacls attempt, no log, and the
`required: true` branch throws into the best-effort persisters that swallow it.
lidge-jun#3522 added the same five-minute re-arm for the response-spill directory; the
general atomic writer never got it.
All five calls now pass `retryTimedOutOnce: true`, so a recovered icacls lets the
next write land, while a still-stalled runner costs at most one bounded attempt
per destination per `TIMEOUT_MEMO_REARM_MS` window. The full harden still has to
succeed before the rename, so a write never publishes without its ACL.
Regression test (`tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts`): one stalled harden
of the default writer, then a healthy runner, then a second write to the same
destination must land. It exercises the production call path (default IO +
`setWindowsHardeningForTests`) rather than the test-local harden lambda the
neighbouring destination-memo test uses.
Atomic writers now retry ACL hardening once after a timeout during normal writes. Synchronous injected-I/O cleanup does not retry. A Windows regression test checks that a later write to the same destination succeeds after an initial timeout.

Summary
Enable retry and verify recovery src/config/atomic-write.ts, tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts
The synchronous, streaming, and asynchronous private-temp writers and the injected-I/O writers retry hardening once after a timeout during normal writes. Synchronous injected-I/O cleanup disables the retry. The Windows test verifies that a second write to the same destination succeeds after the first write times out. It restores the test settings during cleanup.

Explanation
The title "fix(config): re-arm the atomic writer's ACL timeout memo" matches the main change. The PR passes retryTimedOutOnce to the ACL-hardening calls in src/config/atomic-write.ts so a destination can retry after its icacls timeout memo re-arms. The title names the config module, the atomic writer, and the ACL timeout memo, which are the central parts of the change. The title is specific and concise. The cleanup-path exclusion and the regression test are secondary details that the title does not need to cover.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #7834 requires atomicWriteFile to recover after an icacls timeout and to keep ACL hardening mandatory before publication. In src/config/atomic-write.ts, writePrivateTempFile, writePrivateTempFileWith, writePrivateTempFileAsync, the default atomicWriteFileToTarget harden closure, and atomicWriteFileAsync now pass retryTimedOutOnce: true with the existing required: true and destination timeoutMemoKey. The cleanup path explicitly disables the retry so cleanup does not consume the destination recovery attempt. src/lib/windows-secret-acl.ts documents the five-minute TIMEOUT_MEMO_REARM_MS rule and the bounded one-attempt-per-window behavior. The new test in tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts uses the default writer, simulates a timeout, restores a healthy runner, and verifies that the second write reaches the destination. The optional logging suggestion in #7834 is not a required coding objective.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production changes are limited to the five hardening paths named by #7834. The cleanup guard supports the same timeout-recovery contract and preserves the bounded retry behavior. The test import and regression test in tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts directly verify the requested default-writer behavior. No unrelated API, refactoring, or feature change appears in the reviewed whole-PR diff.

Cover the remaining atomic-writer paths and the re-arm window.
The current test does not detect removal of retryTimedOutOnce from the streaming writer, async writer, synchronous default hardener, or asynchronous default hardener. Add focused tests for each path.
Also add a stalled-runner case that verifies no retry occurs before TIMEOUT_MEMO_REARM_MS, then verifies that a later write retries after the five-minute re-arm interval.

Keeping the coverage to the default synchronous writer in this PR: it is the path the report exercised and the one whose cleanup behaviour changed in f87c63a. A matrix over the streaming/async writers plus the 5-minute re-arm timing is a reasonable follow-up, but the re-arm window itself is existing #3522 behaviour rather than something this PR alters.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@xubenqiang Understood. The test in tests/windows/windows-secret-acl.test.ts, Lines 1225–1251, covers the reported default synchronous writer recovery: the first write times out, then the next write succeeds after the runner recovers.
I accept keeping the test scope focused in this PR. The streaming/async coverage and stalled-runner re-arm timing checks remain useful follow-up work, not a confirmed defect in this change. My comment should have made that distinction.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for those tests?
CodeRabbit on lidge-jun#7843: the catch branch re-invokes the same default harden
closure to harden a temp file it could not remove. With `retryTimedOutOnce:
true` that cleanup spent the destination's single re-arm, so a stalled icacls
could block the synchronous writer for a whole hardening deadline and leave the
destination refusing writes until the 5-minute window elapsed.
The default closure now passes `retryTimedOutOnce: !cleanupHarden`; the cleanup
call sets the flag around itself. Injected `io.harden` callers are unaffected.
Do not consume the retry during asynchronous cleanup.
When the initial async hardening times out, scrubbing can succeed while both temporary-file removal attempts fail. The residual branch then calls the default effective.harden(tmp). That closure passes retryTimedOutOnce: true, so cleanup can consume the destination's recovery attempt. If cleanup also fails, a later normal write can receive EACLRETRYEXHAUSTED until the memo re-arms.
Use the same cleanup-state guard as the synchronous writer.

Thanks for this fix. The branch conflicted with dev after #7869 changed the same writer, so I carried its intent onto current dev in #7891, with you credited as co-author (Co-authored-by: JohnnyXu).
#7891 also addresses two points an independent security review raised. A destination's recovery is only admitted once every earlier icacls child for it has exited, so repeated re-arms can't pile up live children on one file. And the new test restores the fake Windows-principal runners on teardown.
I've left this PR open for you and the maintainers to decide; it isn't closed.
Thanks for carrying this onto dev in #7891 with the co-author credit — that works for me, and the two extra hardening points sound right for the re-arm path.
On CodeRabbit's outside-diff note about the asynchronous cleanup consuming the destination's retry: it looks covered by #7891's cleanupHarden / hardenSecretPathAsync changes, so I don't plan to push more commits to this branch on top of the conflict. Happy for this PR to be closed as superseded whenever you prefer; I'll follow #7891.
…ion (#7891)
* fix(config): re-arm atomic writer ACL timeout memos
Reimplement the intent of #7843 on the current dev atomic writer. Opt normal
sync, streamed and async writes into the existing destination-keyed recovery
policy while keeping both residual cleanup paths from consuming recovery.
Required hardening, identity checks and publication ordering remain intact.
Cover all five harden calls, cooldown boundaries, continued stalls, permission
denial and cleanup with deterministic runner/clock regressions. Document the
recovery behavior and retain the current config-root ACL settlement boundary.

* fix(config): retain destination ACL admission until child reap
Reserve default atomic-writer destinations across active writes and retained
Windows ACL children. Refuse overlapping sync, streamed and async writers
without spending timeout recovery or relinquishing removal ownership.
Cover repeated re-arm windows, mixed writers and recovery after actual reap.
Restore both principal runners before resetting regression identity state so
subsequent native ACL tests use the real account.
* test(config): require atomic ACL timeout recovery admission
Keep the exact required/destination assertion and require the explicit
retryTimedOutOnce opt-in added for #7834. The old exact options object
rejects the intended recovery contract during test:changed.
* fix(config): allow healthy overlapping Windows atomic writes

Thank you, @xubenqiang. The fix in this PR landed on dev through #7891 (squash c7f3928), which reimplements the same ACL timeout memo re-arm on the current atomic writer and credits you with a Co-authored-by trailer. Closing this one as superseded.
