fix(update): keep Codex routing for the restarted proxy during an update (#7423) - #7747
Problem. A dashboard update with restart ran ocx update, and its full ocx stop restored native Codex. That replaced the routed catalog with the pristine one. The new proxy only appended the routed rows again after it started. A Codex app-server that loaded the catalog in that gap treated routed models (for example anthropic/claude-opus-5-5) as unknown, fell back to generic metadata (a 258k window instead of 1M), and could loop on compaction until it was restarted.
Fix. When the update job will restart the proxy, Codex routing and its catalog stay in place across the update, and the restarted proxy takes them over:
Job (src/update/job.ts): with restart: true, the update child gets OCX_UPDATE_TEARDOWN_HANDOVER=1. With restart: false, any inherited marker is stripped. Both updater lanes (src/update/index.ts, bin/ocx.mjs) already pass their environment into the ocx stop they run.
ocx stop (src/cli/index.ts, src/update/teardown-handover.ts): asks for a handover only when the restarted proxy will run its startup Codex sync. It claims a pending-teardown receipt marked handover: "update-restart"; for a service-managed proxy, it claims the receipt against the exact runtime endpoint before stopping the manager. It skips the restore and exits 81 only when all of these hold:
the receipt is the single obligation in the home;
the receipt has an exact endpoint, so a later stop can finish it on its own;
the proxy is down, either because it answered deferred and exited, or because a clean service-manager stop took it down. A service-run proxy keeps routing on exit through OCX_SERVICE.
Every other case takes the ordinary restore, including a failed /api/stop that falls back to a signal.
Old proxy (src/server/stop-teardown.ts): when it honors a handover deferral, it exits as a recycle, so its exit cleanup does not restore native Codex.
Updater (src/update/stop-decision.mjs): exit 81 proceeds under the same gates as 80. Runtime records, or a live or unknown endpoint, still abort.
New proxy: drops the marker at startup. While a valid abandoned handover receipt is pending and its startup sync is enabled, startup journal recovery adopts the previous proxy's process-owned journal (reconcileJournal({ adoptUpdateHandover }), published through the guarded journal writer) instead of replaying native config before the first sync. After its first published startup sync, it discharges the receipt.
Ownership and recovery. The receipt is the same durable obligation that #3008 introduced. If install or restart fails and CLI recovery brings the previous version back, that proxy's startup takes routing over. If nothing comes back, the next ocx stop finishes the restore, or ocx start takes it over. A plain ocx stop, an update without restart, and a startup with Codex integration OFF behave exactly as before.
Other changes. Two pure bind-probe helpers moved byte-for-byte from src/update/job.ts to src/update/bind-probe.ts, which keeps job.ts under the 2000-line ratchet threshold. Docs: structure/runtime.md (edited in place; the doc is at its 600-line budget), the dashboard guide, and the CLI lifecycle reference (exit 81).
Scope boundaries: this does not address the issue's second suggestion (surfacing stale app-servers in the update result), and it does not change ocx update run directly from a terminal.
Verification
All runs use pinned Bun 1.4.4 on Windows 11. Head 699fbc9a6 includes merges of origin/dev through 609ce90.
tests/update/update-teardown-handover.test.ts: 30 pass / 0 fail. Every guard has a regression test that fails with its check removed: guessed receipt, failed /api/stop with signal fallback, startup journal adoption, a Codex home replaced mid-recovery, and a stale receipt with integration OFF. Real ocx stop runs go through tests/fixtures/parent-stop-runner.ts, and the real reconcileStartupJournal runs in isolated children (tests/fixtures/handover-journal-probe.ts).
Related suites, run on the merged tree: 468 pass / 0 fail across 14 files (journal, catalog restore, home-owner lifecycle, config write lock, cli-dispatch, stop-deferred-teardown, grok-lifecycle, import-cycle and file-size ratchets, test layout, core/Lab boundary). The update/npm suites gave 433 pass / 0 fail.
bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan pass.
CI on the previous head ee264097a: PR Cross-platform CI and lane=all (40305454518: all nine Windows shards, macOS 1-3/control/widget, Linux) were green. That run caught a source oracle in tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts, since fixed. CI on 699fbc9a6 is running.
Independent security review: six sol rounds. Rounds 1, 2, 3 and 5 found 7 blocking issues, all fixed with regression tests. Rounds 4 and 6 passed with 0 blocking. The Codex and CodeRabbit review threads are answered and resolved.
Not run: a live Codex app-server during a real dashboard update (the issue's exact race), local macOS/Linux service runs, and the full bun run test. bun run test:changed timed out under concurrent load; its persistent failures are identical on clean origin/dev.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Dashboard updates that restart the proxy can now hand off Codex routing and its model catalog to the replacement, avoiding a temporary restoration of native Codex settings.
If the replacement starts, it takes over the routing and completes the handoff after its first sync. If it does not start, the next ocx stop restores native Codex.
Desktop-shell update behavior is unchanged.
Documentation
Updated lifecycle and dashboard guidance to explain the handoff and recovery behavior.
…toring it (#7423)
A dashboard update with restart ran a full ocx stop, which restored native
Codex and the pristine catalog. A Codex process that loaded the catalog before
the new proxy's first sync kept treating routed models as unknown and fell back
to generic metadata, which can loop on compaction.
When the update job will restart the proxy, the update's stop now keeps its
teardown receipt (marked handover), the old proxy exits as a recycle, both
updater lanes proceed past the new exit code 81, and the replacement discharges
abandoned handover receipts after its first published startup sync. An
ordinary ocx stop still restores native Codex.

Walkthrough
Restart-enabled updates can hand shared teardown to a replacement proxy instead of restoring Codex routing during package replacement. The replacement can adopt the prior journal and clear eligible handover receipts after startup sync publishes routing. Ordinary stops retain their existing restoration behavior.
Receipts can identify an update-restart handover. Stop decision logic accepts exit code 81 after runtime-state and proxy-liveness checks pass. Restart-enabled update commands receive the handover marker; non-restarting commands do not.
The CLI claims a handover receipt and exits with code 81 only when stop conditions permit. When the proxy honors a handover deferral, it preserves client configuration. Tests cover stop eligibility, receipt handling, and related stop paths.
Published startup and receipt recovery src/cli/index.ts, src/cli/cross-home-owner.ts, src/codex/desired-state.ts, src/codex/journal.ts, src/update/teardown-handover.ts, tests/update/update-teardown-handover.test.ts, tests/fixtures/handover-journal-probe.ts, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/lifecycle.md, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/web-dashboard.md
Startup sync reports whether it published routing. When a handover is pending, startup can adopt the prior process-owned journal without restoring Codex state. After publication, the replacement discharges eligible abandoned handover receipts. The documentation describes the update and recovery behavior.

Explanation
Every functional change traces to the catalog-continuity objective of #7423.
Test changes: tests/update/update-teardown-handover.test.ts and fixtures are new. tests/providers/xai/grok-lifecycle.test.ts, tests/update/update-stop-classification.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts, and tests/update/update-job.test.ts update existing expectations for exit 81 and the new updateEnv argument. Refactor: src/update/bind-probe.ts moves the strict bind-probe helpers out of src/update/job.ts. The PR states the move keeps job.ts under the 2000-line ratchet. The job.ts diff confirms the removal. The moved bodies were not compared byte for byte in this review.
No demonstrated unrelated change exists. The missing stale-app-server notice is an unmet linked-issue requirement. It is not an out-of-scope change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #7423 states two requested outcomes. The first is met. The second is not.
[#7423, catalog continuity] Met. A routed model must not disappear from the catalog that a Codex process loads during a proxy restart. The reviewed head implements this path:
src/update/job.ts: runGuiUpdateWorker sets updateEnv to withUpdateTeardownHandover(process.env) only when restart is true. Otherwise it sets withoutUpdateTeardownHandover(process.env). The env is passed to the update command.
src/cli/index.ts and src/update/teardown-handover.ts: a stop asks for a handover only under the stated receipt, endpoint, and proxy-down gates. It exits 81 without restoring native Codex.
src/server/stop-teardown.ts: an honored handover deferral exits as a recycle, so exit cleanup does not restore Codex.
src/update/stop-decision.mjs: exit 81 proceeds under the same gates as 80.
src/codex/journal.ts (adoptUpdateHandover), src/cli/cross-home-owner.ts, and src/codex/desired-state.ts (published flag): the new proxy adopts the previous journal and discharges the receipt after a published startup sync.
tests/update/update-teardown-handover.test.ts: the author reports 30 pass. I did not rerun this suite.
[#7423, stale app-server notice] Not met. The issue states that a user should be told where they will see a running app-server that is known to hold a stale catalog. Evidence at the reviewed head:
The src/update/job.ts diff from merge base to head adds only the bind-probe move, the optional env parameter on runLoggedCommand and GuiUpdateWorkerIo.runCommandFn, and the updateEnv selection. It adds no stale-process detection and no update-result message.
announceStopHandover in src/update/teardown-handover.ts describes only the routing handover. It does not name stale app-server processes or the recovery action.
The docs change in docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/web-dashboard.md describes Maintenance behavior only. It adds no stale-app-server notice.
The startup warning that lists running app-server PIDs predates this PR. The issue reports that this warning reached only update-pinned-start.log. No changed file routes it to the update result or dashboard.
The PR description excludes this outcome explicitly. The exclusion does not satisfy the directly linked issue's requirement.
Unresolved: none for the stale-notice outcome. The code search covers the whole-PR file summary and the job.ts diff. Other changed files do not add this behavior according to the change summary.
Resolution
Implement the stale app-server notice required by #7423. Add a user-visible signal in the update job result or the dashboard Maintenance view. The signal must (1) name the Codex app-server or daemon processes that run an older catalog than the one the update just published, and (2) give the recovery action, such as ocx sync --restart-codex or restarting the listed processes. Add automated tests that cover the detection and the rendered notice. If maintainers decide to defer this outcome, narrow or split #7423 first. Then change Closes #7423 so that this PR closes only the catalog-continuity outcome.

#7423)
Review r1 findings:
- A service-manager stop takes the proxy down before any receipt was claimed, so
the handover never applied. With handover requested, claim the receipt against
the exact runtime endpoint before stopping the manager, and accept a proxy that
is gone after a clean manager stop.
- The marker could reach later no-restart updates through recovery-started
proxies. A starting proxy drops it, and a no-restart job strips it explicitly.
…n finish (#7423)
Review r2: a stop that could only record the configured endpoint wrote a guessed receipt, and ordinary ocx stop refuses to finish one, so a handover that never got a replacement left Codex routed at a dead proxy. Such a stop now restores as usual.
…7423)
Review r3: when /api/stop failed before honoring the receipt, the stop fell back to a signal and a standalone proxy's own exit cleanup restored the pristine catalog, yet the parent still exited 81. ocx stop now records whether the stopped proxy answered 'deferred' and hands over only then; a manager-stopped service proxy keeps its own OCX_SERVICE preservation.

Review r5: the adoption wrote the journal directly, so a Codex home replaced after the read could have its journal overwritten; it now publishes through publishCodexArtifact under the held lock and preserves both files on refusal. A stale handover receipt no longer suppresses recovery once the Codex integration is off: adoption also requires the current startup-sync eligibility.

Clean up the handover marker when runGuiUpdateWorker rejects.
Line 365 sets process.env[UPDATE_TEARDOWN_HANDOVER_ENV] to "1". Line 382 deletes it only after runGuiUpdateWorker resolves. The worker does its setup before its main try block. This setup includes readUpdateJob, readRuntimePort, loadConfig and the checkForUpdate call. A throw there rejects the promise and skips lines 382-385. The marker then stays in the shared process.env. Later tests in the same Bun process can inherit it. Examples are updateTeardownHandoverRequested(process.env) callers and the worker case with restart=false. The job file is also left in home.
The earlier review flagged this and the current code still has the issue. Move the cleanup into finally.
