feat(providers): add Runcrate to the free directory - #7726
The free allowance is bounded and the row says so. Only five named open models qualify (deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, zai-org/GLM-5.3-Flash, zai-org/GLM-5.3, openai/gpt-oss-120b, Qwen/Qwen3.8-Flash), one allowance per GitHub account at least 30 days old, limited per session and per week, shared by the workspace. When the allowance is used up or free capacity is busy, a workspace with credit continues as paid traffic; without credit, requests stop until the allowance resets, or until free capacity frees up.
Discovery is hybrid: the five free ids are seeded as models, and live discovery still lists the full catalog, which is paid. The note says every other discovered model is paid and that chat inference uses published per-token rates.
It is a directory row, not a canonical registry preset. A test pins that runcrate stays out of PROVIDER_REGISTRY.
Model discovery: GET https://api.runcrate.ai/v1/models without a key returned HTTP 200 with 193 rows (143 text, 24 image, 13 video, 9 embeddings, 4 audio). All five free ids are present, and every row carries a paid list price.
I (heydryft) work on Runcrate. Runcrate is operated and maintained by Aeonmind LLC; the maintenance owner for this row is the Runcrate team (hello@runcrate.ai).
Routing authorization (MAINTAINERS.md)
Runcrate is the service the user signs up with and pays. Aeonmind LLC operates api.runcrate.ai, issues the API key, and bills the account. The key is only ever sent to api.runcrate.ai; this row adds no other credential destination.
Runcrate serves some models through third-party model providers and infrastructure partners, and says so publicly: terms section 09 ("Infrastructure partners"), privacy policy section 09 ("Prompts and outputs you send to the inference API are processed by third-party model providers, who handle them under their own terms"), and the free page ("Free requests are served by third-party model providers").
The account holder authorizes that routing by accepting those terms when they create the account and key. Runcrate's agreements with its providers are not public documents, and I am not attaching or citing any here. If that is not enough for a credential-destination review, an inert reference row is fine with us.
Verification
Bun 1.4.4, on dev 8dd330a3f (0 commits behind at push):
bun test tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts: 65 pass, 0 fail. This file holds the free-directory invariants and the new Runcrate projection test (destination, key auth, hybrid discovery with the five seeded ids, bounded free-allowance note, not in PROVIDER_REGISTRY). The new test fails against the previous row ("Open models are free") and passes now.
bun run typecheck: clean.
Full-suite exception: I did not run bun run test locally. The machine is running several concurrent worktrees, and this change is one data row plus one test, so I ran the focused file that owns the directory invariants. The rest of the suite is left to CI.
No GUI change.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed (none needed for a directory row).
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults (no secrets; key-based auth only).
AI assistance was used to write this change and the PR text; the commands and probes above were run and their results are as stated.
Review readiness checklist
This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:
Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.
I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).
I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.
The free-provider directory now lists Runcrate in the recurring-or-keyless group. It defines an OpenAI-compatible endpoint with live model discovery, verification metadata, documentation and models URLs, a free-access note, and the display label Runcrate.
Issue 7714 requests user controls to verify individual or all provider models and disable unverified models. This change records provider verification but does not add model verification controls.

Reviewed the complete one-file diff at 2c8c74d862306b423311ca1ca7531c4a1d73149e. Two changes are needed before readiness:
src/providers/free-directory.ts, Runcrate CONNECTABLE row: this uses openAi(...), so it is a key-accepting live-discovery connection, not an inert reference. Please make the entry's note and evidence point to the actual free-inference contract, checked 2026-10-25: only five named open models qualify, the GitHub account must be at least 30 days old, and the session/weekly workspace allowance is limited. A workspace with credit can continue as paid traffic after allowance exhaustion or busy free capacity. The current broad “Open models are free” note and full /v1/models discovery do not communicate those boundaries. Keep discovery truthful about the full mixed paid/free catalog; do not imply the entire discovered catalog is free.
Regression coverage: add a focused Runcrate row/connection projection test (destination, key auth, discovery and bounded free-allowance note). Current exact-head hygiene/enforce-target fail for missing_regression_test; I have not added an exception label. Use the declared Bun 1.4.4 role for the fresh validation.
I independently found the primary Chat endpoint documentation, terms identifying Aeonmind LLC in the site footer, and the free-allowance page above, so a claim that Runcrate has no free allowance at all would be incorrect. Please cite these and the dated model-discovery evidence together with maintenance ownership/affiliation in the PR. Since the service documents third-party routing, the credential-destination review still needs the applicable routing authorization evidence under MAINTAINERS.md; the directory filename does not waive it.
Kept Draft. This is an evidence/contract review, not an acceptance of a new credential destination; no account sign-in, provider inference or Codex Security scan was run.
Maintainer decision for v2.93.0 release prep: DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE.
The outstanding CHANGES_REQUESTED review (Ingwannu, 2026-10-25) was checked against the current head 2c8c74d862306b423311ca1ca7531c4a1d73149e, which is the same commit that was reviewed. It is not yet addressed:
The Runcrate CONNECTABLE row in src/providers/free-directory.ts still says "Open models are free" and discovers the full /v1/models catalog. The free allowance is narrower (five named open models, a GitHub account age requirement, and a limited session/weekly allowance; a credited workspace continues as paid traffic).
There is still no focused regression test for the row, and hygiene / enforce-target fail with missing_regression_test.
A free-directory addition is not release-critical, so this stays open for after v2.93.0. Once the note/evidence describes the bounded allowance and a focused projection test is added on a current dev base, it can be reviewed again.
Only five named open models have a free allowance (GitHub account at least
30 days old, limited per session and per week, shared by the workspace).
Seed those ids, keep live discovery of the full paid catalog, cite the
free-allowance page, chat-completions docs and terms, and add a focused
projection test for the row.
Runcrate row: the note now matches https://www.runcrate.ai/inference/free?utm_source=opencodex&utm_medium=listing&utm_campaign=gpu_pricing as checked 2026-10-26. Only the five named open models have a free allowance, one per GitHub account at least 30 days old, limited per session and per week and shared by the workspace. Once it is used up or free capacity is busy, a workspace with credit continues as paid traffic. Discovery is now hybrid: the five free ids are seeded, and live discovery still lists the full catalog (193 rows on 2026-10-26, all with paid list prices). The note says every other model is paid and that chat inference uses published per-token rates. documentationUrl now points at the chat-completions docs, and the source comment cites the free page, the docs, the terms (Aeonmind LLC) and the dated /v1/models probe.
Regression test: added "the Runcrate row bounds its free allowance and keeps the paid catalog discoverable" to tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts. It checks the destination, key auth, hybrid discovery and seeded ids, the bounded note, and that runcrate stays out of PROVIDER_REGISTRY. On Bun 1.4.4 the file gives 65 pass, 0 fail, and the new test fails against the old row. bun run typecheck is clean.
The PR body now has the dated evidence, affiliation (I work on Runcrate, Aeonmind LLC operates and maintains it) and a routing-authorization section under MAINTAINERS.md. It covers what the public terms and privacy policy say about third-party model providers. Runcrate's provider agreements are not public and I haven't cited any. If that is not enough for a credential destination, an inert reference row is fine with us.
The new head 904dd6af has been noted. It narrows the Runcrate row to the bounded free allowance and adds a test in tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts, which looks like it addresses both points in the change request. The v2.93.0 decision does not change, and this stays DEFERRED_POST_RELEASE: a free-directory addition is not release-critical, and review capacity during release prep is going to release blockers. After the release, please tick the readiness checklist once your local validation passes on a current dev base, so that the review and CI can run on the exact head.
provider-registry-parity.test.ts sits at the 2000-line file-size threshold; the new case pushed it to 2034 lines (NEW_OVERSIZED) once merged with dev. Move the case byte for byte into tests/providers/free-directory-runcrate.test.ts, registered in a new explicitShards map and the expected layout fixture.
Maintainer update (L-B lane, v2.93.0 release prep). This PR is POST-RELEASE: it lands only after v2.93.0 is published on main.
The CHANGES_REQUESTED review (Ingwannu, on 2c8c74d8) is addressed by 904dd6af, checked on head f98bf002:
Bounded free-allowance note and evidence. The Runcrate row's note and comments now name the five free open models, the requirement for a GitHub account at least 30 days old, the per-session and weekly limits shared by the workspace, and continuation as paid traffic once a credited workspace uses up its allowance. They cite https://www.runcrate.ai/inference/free, the Chat endpoint docs and the operator (Aeonmind LLC, terms page), verified 2026-10-26. Discovery is hybrid: the five free ids are seeded, and live /v1/models discovery stays truthful about the mixed paid catalog. A third-party aggregator (inferencehub) independently lists the same five models, the 30-day GitHub requirement and the session/weekly caps.
Focused regression. A test asserts the destination, key auth, discovery mode, seeded models, each allowance bound in the note, and that the entry does not become a canonical registry preset.
Maintainer commits:f98bf002 merges current dev (merge, not rebase). Merged with dev, the new case pushed tests/providers/provider-registry-parity.test.ts to 2034 lines, over the 2000-line file-size threshold (NEW_OVERSIZED). So the case moved byte for byte into tests/providers/free-directory-runcrate.test.ts, registered in a new scripts/test-layout/layout-providers.json shard and in the expected layout fixture.
Local verification on f98bf002 (Bun 1.4.4): the new Runcrate test, provider-registry-parity, file-size ratchet and both layout guards pass, 103 tests with 0 failures. tsc --noEmit, structure:check, privacy:scan and git diff --check also pass. I approved the exact-head fork CI runs (Cross-platform CI 40340732156, Catalog async contracts 40340732257) after reviewing that the diff touches only the provider row, tests and layout JSON.
Merge plan: once v2.93.0 is published, squash-merge if exact-head CI is green on the then-current head. Until then, the PR stays as it is.
Requested changes verified as addressed at 904dd6a/f98bf002 (bounded allowance note + focused regression); evidence: #7726 (comment). Merge held until v2.93.0 is published.
… 1017
RunCrate's free page and /v1/models (free_tier: true) include deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, which the entry omitted while saying every other model is paid. Checked 2026-10-27.
Maintainer integration decision: MERGE (squash) into dev
v2.93.0 is published on main, so this post-release PR can land.
Head 8b560fa. The earlier CHANGES_REQUESTED review was addressed and dismissed.
Sol review, round 1 (rel293-lb-review-7726-r1b): MUSTFIX, 1 finding. The entry listed five free models and said every other discovered model is paid. RunCrate's free page and its public /v1/models catalog (free_tier: true) also include deepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017. The maintainer confirmed that against both live sources and fixed it in 8b560fa: the ID is added, the note and comment now say six, lastVerified is 2026-10-27, and the test was updated.
Sol review, round 2 (rel293-lb-review-7726-r2): PASS, 0 blocking. The entry now matches all six free IDs exactly. The reviewer found no new inconsistency and judged the test meaningful.
CI on the exact head: all 30 PR checks green. The fork workflows were approved by the maintainer after checking that the diff touches only the directory entry, its test and the layout maps.
Combined tree with current dev f94e95c (includes #7561, which also edits the layout fixture): clean trial merge. On that tree, the RunCrate test, registry parity, both layout guards and the file-size ratchet pass (103/103), and typecheck is clean. Pinned Bun 1.4.4.
NOT RUN: full suite, authenticated RunCrate inference, lane=all (not Windows-sensitive).
Thanks @lidge-jun for merging, and thanks @Ingwannu for the careful review. Glad Runcrate made it into the opencodex free directory.
