Summary

dev CI went red on Windows after #7468 merged: run https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39606758443, windows 9/9. #7468's withoutHostProcesses helper refuses every Bun.spawnSync during the update-recovery scenarios and asserts that none were attempted. On Windows, the config writes those scenarios make run the ACL belt (src/config/atomic-write.ts, src/config/paths.ts), C:\\Windows\\system32\\icacls.exe, against the test home. The helper exempted only the PowerShell wrapper cleanup, so 9 cases in tests/update/update-job.test.ts failed at the "no host launches" assertion. Production tolerated the refusal; only the test assertion failed. PR CI didn't catch it because the Windows shards run only after merge or by dispatch.

This is a test-only fix. The helper now passes through exactly %SystemRoot%\\System32\\icacls.exe, and only when every path argument is inside the test's OPENCODEX_HOME or the temp directory, which restores the coverage these scenarios had before #7468. Allowed launches are recorded in a separate allowed list (readable through an optional observed argument) and asserted to be that binary on win32 only. Everything else is still refused and counted.

Verification

  • New tests/update/update-recovery-host-free.test.ts (pure, platform-parameterised): exact-binary match, renamed or relocated binaries refused, targets outside the roots refused (including mixed lists and sibling prefixes), switches not treated as paths, refusal off Windows, UNC and case-insensitive roots.
  • bun test tests/update/update-recovery-host-free.test.ts tests/update/update-job.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts: 111 pass, 0 fail (macOS). bun x tsc --noEmit: clean. layout.json stays at 1999 lines (the entry is on an existing line).
  • Windows proof: Cross-platform CI lane=all dispatched on this branch (link in a follow-up comment); this merges only when windows 9/9 is green.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Windows update recovery validation by permitting narrowly scoped ACL operations for test-owned paths while continuing to block unauthorized host-process launches.
    • Added stricter validation for Windows ACL commands, including executable location, target paths, supported arguments, platform checks, and UNC path handling.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for valid and invalid ACL command scenarios.
    • Updated test layout mappings for update-related tests.

…ree helper

#7468's withoutHostProcesses refused every spawn, including the icacls.exe that
config writes run on Windows against the test home, and failed 9 update-job cases
on windows 9/9. Pass through exactly %SystemRoot%\System32\icacls.exe when every
path argument is inside OPENCODEX_HOME or the temp dir, record it in a separate
allowed list, and keep refusing everything else.

📝 Walkthrough

The test helper now allows and records validated Windows icacls.exe commands whose target paths remain within configured test roots. Tests cover executable, argument, platform, path, and UNC validation. Test-layout mappings include the recovery and supervised-restart tests.

Changes: Test-scoped Windows ACL allowance

Layer / File(s) Summary
ACL validation and test coverage
tests/helpers/update-recovery-host-free.ts, tests/update/update-recovery-host-free.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The helper validates exact system icacls.exe commands, approved ACL arguments, Windows execution, and canonical paths under OPENCODEX_HOME or the temporary directory. Allowed commands are recorded separately. Tests cover accepted and rejected argument shapes, executable matching, platform rejection, path traversal, sibling prefixes, and UNC paths. The test layout adds the recovery and supervised-restart tests; the expected fixture adds the recovery test.

Windows proof complete on this head (5504f1d): Cross-platform CI lane=all https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39613160473 succeeded on attempt 2. windows 9/9 (the shard #7468 broke) passed on attempt 1. windows 5/9 failed once in tests/gui/gui-pair-http.test.ts (CLI server readiness timeout on a cold runner; unrelated to this helper, and green on dev run 39606758443), then passed on rerun.

…ical target

Review (#7487): a '..' segment passed the prefix check, and switches such as
/save took a relative file operand outside the test roots. Allow exactly the
argv shapes src/lib/windows-secret-acl.ts builds, resolve the target with
path.win32.resolve before the containment check, and test the refusals.

Windows proof on head 7baac44 (narrowed helper): Cross-platform CI lane=all https://github.com/lidge-jun/opencodex/actions/runs/39622319949 succeeded on attempt 2. windows 9/9 passed on attempt 1. Two unrelated timing flakes passed on rerun: macos 3/3 (claude-intercept-proxy.test.ts:196, settle() called after a 20 ms sleep) and windows 5/9 (desktop-compatibility key protection, PowerShell helper ~50 s).

Merged with owner authority per maintainer decision 2026-10-21 (jun): the project owner authorized owner-path (--admin) merges for the pending green PRs after the 2.90.0 release; no second-maintainer approval is available.

Exact-head verification on 7baac443be1530da479548d6bb6a9c2a0134b5ed: all checks completed with no failures, the PR is mergeable, there are no change requests, and no unresolved current Major/Critical/P0/P1 review threads. A local squash of this head onto current dev 2945ebb36 passed typecheck, structure:check, the file-size, import-cycle and test-layout ratchets, and this PR's own tests ( 109 pass 0 fail ). The merge is a squash pinned with --match-head-commit.
