Summary

Carries #6801 by @LilMGenius onto current dev so repository CI can run, and fixes two review findings.

A LazyCodex role runs on two values from its file under $CODEX_HOME/agents: model and model_reasoning_effort. Before this change, the role API and ocx agent roles carried only the model. LazyCodex rebuilds the role file from ~/.omo/omo.jsonc on its next install, so an effort set only in the TOML did not survive. After this change:

  • GET /api/codex-agent-roles returns each role's effort (the root model_reasoning_effort, or null).
  • PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} with an effort writes it to the role TOML and to "[codex]".agents.<role>.reasoning in omo.jsonc. Codex none becomes LazyCodex off. A level LazyCodex lacks (ultra) stays in the TOML only, and any older reasoning is removed so LazyCodex cannot reapply a stale level. A model-only save keeps both effort values.
  • ocx agent roles set <role> <model> --effort <level> sends the effort; ocx agent roles prints it next to the model.

The existing omo.jsonc rules are unchanged. The file is never created, a file with comments is left alone, and the role TOML write stands when the mirror is skipped.

Fixes on top of the four carried commits (authorship preserved):

  • ocx agent roles set ... --effort "" used to drop the empty value and change only the model. It now fails with a usage error before any request, and every supplied value is forwarded for server validation.
  • The omo role-model paragraph in structure/clients/integrations.md described a one-value write. It now states the reasoning mapping, the stale-level removal, and that a model-only save keeps the level.

Supersedes #6801.

Verification

  • bun test tests/clients/omo-role-models.test.ts tests/server/codex-agent-role-routes.test.ts tests/server/codex-role-auto-assign-routes.test.ts tests/routing/codex-agent-role-models.test.ts tests/cli/cli-headless-parity.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/skill-ocx.test.ts tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/test-layout.test.ts: 175 pass, 0 fail.
  • New cases: CLI --effort high forwarding and empty-value refusal with no request sent; a model-only route save keeps model_reasoning_effort and the omo.jsonc reasoning.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run skill:surface:check, bun run privacy:scan: pass.
  • Full bun run test was not run locally. Several lanes run concurrently on this machine, so the full suite is left to the exact-head hosted CI on this PR.
  • An independent reviewer that did not see the implementation reviewed the carry against current dev. Its two findings are the fixes above.
  • No GUI change.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Role settings now support a reasoning effort level alongside the model. Supported levels are mirrored to LazyCodex when available; unsupported levels remain in the role settings.
    • Role status now displays the effort level when set.
    • Changing only a model preserves the existing reasoning setting.
  • Documentation

    • Updated CLI and integration guidance to describe effort settings and their behavior.

…and omo.jsonc

GET /api/codex-agent-roles now returns each role's model_reasoning_effort, and a PUT with an effort
also writes it into [codex].agents.<role>.reasoning, the level LazyCodex applies on its next install.
Codex's none becomes LazyCodex's off; a level LazyCodex lacks, such as ultra, stays in the role file
and removes any older reasoning from omo.jsonc so a stale level is not reapplied.
…ashboard Save

The Save paragraph read as if the dashboard also mirrored an effort; this PR has no effort picker, and a model-only Save leaves both effort values alone.
…e reasoning mirror

An empty --effort value was dropped from the PUT body, so the command
changed the role's model and silently ignored the flag the operator gave.
Refuse it before any request and forward every supplied value so the
server validates it.

The omo.jsonc role paragraph in structure/clients/integrations.md still
described a one-value write; it now states the reasoning mapping, the
stale-level removal and that a model-only save keeps the level.

Regression tests cover the CLI forwarding and refusal and a model-only
route save preserving both effort values.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The role-setting CLI accepts an optional effort value. The server stores it in the role TOML and mirrors supported reasoning values to omo.jsonc. The role listing includes effort, and the documentation and tests cover these updates.

Changes

Agent role effort

The CLI accepts --effort, rejects a blank value, sends a supplied effort with the model, and displays effort in role status. The usage descriptions and CLI parity test cover the option.
Persist and mirror role effort
src/clients/omo-role-models.ts, src/server/management/codex-agent-role-routes.ts, tests/clients/omo-role-models.test.ts, tests/server/codex-agent-role-routes.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/integrations.md, structure/clients/integrations.md, structure/subagents.md
The route includes effort in role responses and passes mapped reasoning to the omo.jsonc writer. The writer maps none to off, preserves reasoning when effort is omitted, and removes reasoning when the effort is unsupported. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

P2 Badge Preserve the effort when retrying the omo mirror

When the dashboard applies an auto-assignment with an effort and the omo.jsonc write returns write_failed, the role TOML is updated but the existing retry flow in gui/src/pages/integrations/LazyCodexRoleModels.tsx stores only the model and invokes save(row.role, draft) without the effort. Because this branch maps an omitted effort to undefined, clicking “Retry mirror” preserves the stale omo reasoning instead of copying the newly saved TOML effort, so the next LazyCodex install can restore the wrong value. Retain the failed effort in the retry state and resend it, or provide a retry path that derives the current TOML effort.

Update the role-file write contract to include effort.

This paragraph says src/codex/agent-role-models.ts writes only the root model key. An effort-bearing PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} now also passes effort to that writer, and the route test checks the resulting model_reasoning_effort key. Distinguish model-only saves from effort-bearing saves here. Keep the byte-preservation description accurate for both cases.
