Summary

Two defects in the desktop bootstrap page made a healthy start look like a dead application, and a
silent shell look like a healthy start. Both were observed on a real Linux desktop session before
being traced to the source.

The failure block ignored its own hidden attribute. #failure { display: grid } is an id rule,
so it outranks the user agent's [hidden] { display: none }. The block is marked hidden in the
markup and is only meant to appear once apply() sees a failed phase, but it was painted on every
start: a Retry button and an empty read-only diagnostic box, sitting under a headline that says the
runtime is still starting. That is the screen a user reads as "it is broken and all I can do is
press Retry". The rule now carries a #failure[hidden] { display: none } guard.

The handshake with the shell was unbounded. The page renders what it is told, which is the right
design, but it had no deadline of its own. invoke returns a promise that neither settles nor
rejects when the bridge exists and the command never answers, so start() could sit on
startup_phases forever. The page then keeps its initial markup indefinitely — starting headline,
empty checklist, no diagnostic — while the shell's own 30-second deadline runs somewhere the user
cannot see. withDeadline now bounds each of the three handshake steps at 5 s and routes a timeout
into the existing reportPageFailure path, so the surface says it could not read its own startup
state and hands over a copyable cause instead of showing nothing.

The bound is deliberately not the shell's DEADLINE. This is not a second opinion about how long
startup may take — the shell still owns that — it is the separate question of whether the shell is
answering at all, which a surface whose entire purpose is to report must be able to decide for
itself.

No behaviour in the shell changes. No authentication, credential, workflow or release-automation
surface is touched.

Verification

  • Local checks: NOT RUN. Per the batch rule, no repository test, typecheck, build or install was
    run; verification is static review plus hosted CI at the exact head.
  • Observed first, then read out of the source: on a GNOME/X11 session with no tray host, the
    installed 2.61.0 package showed a window whose headline stayed at the markup default, whose phase
    checklist was empty, and whose Retry button and empty diagnostic box were both visible — a
    combination the page's own logic cannot produce, because reportPageFailure rewrites the headline
    and a failed phase renders the checklist. That narrowed it to the CSS override plus a handshake
    that had not settled.
  • Regression coverage is appended to tests/clients/desktop-startup-surface.test.ts, which already
    reads these two files as source oracles: one case asserts the [hidden] guard exists, the other
    asserts every handshake step is wrapped. Both fail against the previous revision — the guard did
    not exist, and neither invoke was wrapped. The file is not in the size ratchet.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Startup initialization now reports a failure if the shell does not respond within five seconds, preventing the page from remaining stuck indefinitely.
    • Failure details remain hidden unless a startup problem occurs.
    • Startup failures are surfaced more consistently when initialization services do not respond, providing clearer feedback instead of leaving the page in an unfinished loading state.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The desktop bootstrap page now applies a 5-second deadline to startup shell operations. Timeout errors use the existing page-failure path. The failure panel remains hidden when its hidden attribute is present. The desktop CSP now permits Tauri and IPC origins. Tests cover the startup behavior.

P2 Badge Re-run the page handshake after a timeout

When startup_phases takes longer than five seconds, this new deadline exits start() before the event listener and snapshot request are installed. The resulting error surface enables Retry, but that button only invokes retry_startup; it never calls start() again and remains disabled after a successful invoke. If the bridge recovers and the retried runtime still fails, its events and diagnostic are therefore missed and the page stays on the stale handshake error with no usable retry. Have Retry re-establish the page handshake, or otherwise restore the listener and snapshot before restarting the shell sequence.

In this case the event listener is immediately unregistered after its first trigger. <title>packages/api/src/event.ts</title> https://github.com/tauri-apps/tauri/blob/dev/packages/api/src/event.ts # packages/api/src/event.ts - Branch: dev - Repository: tauri-apps/tauri --- // Copyright 2019-2024 Tauri Programme within The Commons Conservancy // SPDX-License-Identifier: Apache-2.0 // SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT /** * The event system allows you to emit events to the backend and listen to events from it. * * This package is also accessible with `window.__TAURI__.event` when `app.withGlobalTauri` in `tauri.conf.json` is set to `true`. * `@module` */ import { invoke, transformCallback } from &`#39`;./core&`#39`; declare global { interface Window { __TAURI_EVENT_PLUGIN_INTERNALS__: { unregisterListener: (event: string, eventId: number) => void } } } type EventTarget = | { kind: &`#39`;Any&`#39`; } | { kind: &`#39`;AnyLabel&`#39`;; label: string } | { kind: &`#39`;App&`#39`; } | { kind: &`#39`;Window&`#39`;; label: string } | { kind: &`#39`;Webview&`#39`;; label: string } | { kind: &`#39`;WebviewWindow&`#39`;; label: string } interface Event { /** Event name */ event: EventName /** Event identifier used to unlisten */ id: number /** Event payload */ payload: T } type EventCallback = (event: Event) => void // TODO(v3): mark this as Promise type UnlistenFn = () => void type EventName = `${TauriEvent}` | (string & Record<never, never>) interface Options { /** * The event target to listen to, defaults to `{ kind: &`#39`;Any&`#39`; }`, see {`@link` EventTarget}. * * If a string is provided, {`@link` EventTarget.AnyLabel} is used. */ target?: string | EventTarget } /** * `@since` 1.1.0 */ enum TauriEvent { WINDOW_RESIZED = &`#39`;tauri://resize&`#39`;, WINDOW_MOVED = &`#39`;tauri://move&`#39`;, WINDOW_CLOSE_REQUESTED = &`#39`;tauri://close-requested&`#39`;, WINDOW_DESTROYED = &`#39`;tauri://destroyed&`#39`;, WINDOW_FOCUS = &`#39`;tauri://focus&`#39`;, WINDOW_BLUR = &`#39`;tauri://blur&`#39`;, WINDOW_SCALE_FACTOR_CHANGED = &`#39`;tauri://scale-change&`#39`;, WINDOW_THEME_CHANGED = &`#39`;tauri://theme-changed&`#39`;, WINDOW_CREATED = &`#39`;tauri://window-created&`#39`;, WINDOW_SUSPENDED = &`#39`;tauri://suspended&`#39`;, WINDOW_RESUMED = &`#39`;tauri://resumed&`#39`;, WEBVIEW_CREATED = &`#39`;tauri://webview-created&`#39`;, DRAG_ENTER = &`#39`;tauri://drag-enter&`#39`;, DRAG_OVER = &`#39`;tauri://drag-over&`#39`;, DRAG_DROP = &`#39`;tauri://drag-drop&`#39`;, DRAG_LEAVE = &`#39`;tauri://drag-leave&`#39`; } /** * Unregister the event listener associated with the given name and id. * * `@ignore` * `@param` event The event name * `@param` eventId Event identifier * `@returns` */ async function _unlisten(event: string, eventId: number): Promise { window.__TAURI_EVENT_PLUGIN_INTERNALS__.unregisterListener(event, eventId) await invoke(&`#39`;plugin:event|unlisten&`#39`;, { event, eventId }) } /** * Listen to an emitted event to any {`@link` EventTarget|target}. * * `@example` * ```typescript * import { listen } from &`#39`;`@tauri-apps/api/event`&`#39`;; * const unlisten = await listen (&`#39`;error&`#39`;, (event) => { * console.log(`Got error, payload: ${event.payload}`); * }); * * // you need to call unlisten if your handler goes out of scope e.g. the component is unmounted * unlisten(); * ``` * * `@param` event Event name. Calling the returned unlisten function inside that window crashes: ``` TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating &`#39`;listeners[eventId].handlerId&`#39`;) ``` The generated unlisten script guards the per-event object but not the entry itself (`unlisten_js_script`, `crates/tauri/src/event/mod.rs`): ```js const listeners = (window[&`#39`;__TAURI_EVENT_LISTENERS__&`#39`;] || {})[event] if (listeners) { window.__TAURI_INTERNALS__.unregisterCallback(listeners[eventId].handlerId) // ← throws } ``` — in contrast with event delivery (`event_initialization_script` in the same file), which does guard the entry: `const listener = listeners[id]; if (listener) { … }`. The consequence is worse than the crash itself: the throw happens on the **first** line of `_unlisten` in `@tauri-apps/api/event`, so the `invoke(&`#39`;plugin:event|unlisten&`#39`;, …)` on its second line never runs. The backend listener stays registered and the JS callback stays alive — the "removed" handler keeps firing once the registration eval lands, and after a remount the event is handled twice. With React StrictMode (mount → unmount → mount in dev) this window is hit on essentially every fast unsubscribe; we saw it as a steady stream of unhandled rejections in Sentry plus double-delivered events. ### Reproduction steps ```ts import { listen } from "`@tauri-apps/api/event`" // Unlisten immediately after listen() resolves — before the registration // eval reaches the webview: const un = await listen("my-evt", console.log) un() // → TypeError above + the backend listener is leaked ``` Any React StrictMode effect that subscribes on mount and unsubscribes in cleanup reproduces this via the dev-mode mount→unmount→mount cycle. ### Expected behavior Unlisten tolerates a not-yet-registered (or already-gone) entry: guard the lookup (`listeners[eventId]?.handlerId`, skipping `unregisterCallback` when absent) — and still send the `plugin:event|unlisten` invoke so the backend side is cleaned up either way. ### Platform and versions - tauri `2.11.5` (latest on crates.io); the unguarded line is unchanged on `dev` - `@tauri-apps/api` `2.11.1` - macOS 26.5 / WKWebView (the lookup itself is platform-independent) ## Timeline - FabianLars added label "type: bug" - FabianLars added label "status: needs triage" **Legend-Master** commented on 2026-07-30T09:39:26Z: > I can&`#39`;t seem to reproduce this, adding > > ```svelte > unlisten() > unlisten = undefined > ``` > > to > > https://github.com/tauri-apps/tauri/blob/5ab317504aa2a77cbdaf46341456ff26f13861f6/examples/api/src/views/Communication.svelte#L13-L15 > > and press send event to rust gives me no error at all - Legend-Master added label "status: needs more info" - Referenced by PR `#15800`: fix(core): guard event unlisten script when listener entry is missing - Referenced by PR `#22`: fix(desktop): cortar la inundación de consola cuando el relay nos rechaza

Clean up a startup listener that outlives its deadline.

withDeadline rejects only its wrapper. Tauri listen returns a promise for an unlisten function and keeps the listener registered until cleanup. If registration resolves after five seconds, later startup-phase events still call apply. A non-failed event hides the timeout panel, and a failed event replaces the timeout diagnostic.

Disable the callback when startup fails, and call the unlisten function when the registration resolves.

Suggested fix
-    await withDeadline(listen("startup-phase", (event) => apply(event.payload)), "the startup-phase subscription");
-    apply(await withDeadline(invoke("startup_snapshot"), "startup_snapshot"));
+    let acceptStartupEvents = true;
+    const subscription = listen("startup-phase", (event) => {
+      if (acceptStartupEvents) apply(event.payload);
+    });
+    await withDeadline(subscription, "the startup-phase subscription");
+    apply(await withDeadline(invoke("startup_snapshot"), "startup_snapshot"));
   } catch (error) {
+    acceptStartupEvents = false;
+    void subscription.then((unlisten) => unlisten()).catch(() => {});
     reportPageFailure("The startup surface could not reach the shell.", error);
