Closes #639.

Establishes reproducible baselines for the four hot paths Epic #635 intends to
change the ownership topology of, so the refactors in #637 and #638 can be
judged against evidence rather than intuition. This branch records baselines and
instrumentation; it deliberately does not change any ownership topology.

Scope

One measurement-helper module per scope in wireframe_testing, mirroring the
existing codec_benchmarks arrangement. No second benchmark framework is
introduced: the helpers report raw Duration and counter values, and Criterion
does the statistics.

Scope Module Entry point
Connection actor event processing connection_actor_benchmark_support measure_actor_drain
Push handle send path push_benchmark_support measure_push
Application connection startup connection_startup_benchmark_support measure_startup
Client pool acquisition client_pool_benchmark_support measure_pool_acquisition

Each keeps its scenarios as data — workload enums and structs — with one
fallible measure_* entry point, so a benchmark binary, a test, or a one-off
experiment can drive the same code and the same scenario can be pointed at an
old and a new implementation without being rewritten.

Directly asserted counters

Acceptance criterion 3 asks that factory-invocation and middleware-transformation
counts be asserted rather than inferred from timing, and criterion 4 asks the
same of pool scheduler task creation. All three are reported as exact counts:
StartupMeasurement carries factory_invocations and
middleware_transformations, and PoolScheduler::kick increments a spawn
counter behind #[must_use] pub fn pool_scheduler_task_spawns().

The spawn count is a bound, not a zero, for an uncontended run.
PooledClientLease::drop notifies the scheduler unconditionally, so a release
reaches kick even when nobody is waiting. A burst of n acquire/release
cycles therefore spawns between 1 and 2n workers. Direct measurement falsified
the initial "uncontended spawns nothing" assumption, and the corrected contract
is pinned by tests rather than left as prose.

Allocation measurement

CountingAllocator lives in wireframe_testing::benchmark_alloc_support, with
the counter, gate, and scoped helper shared. Each bench binary declares only the
one-line #[global_allocator] static. Acceptance criterion 5 requires that the
measurements identify whether removing a nested Arc changes the allocation
count as expected, so verify_allocation_harness runs three controls before any
measurement: a zero-allocation probe (catches a gate stuck open), a
positive-allocation probe (catches a gate that never opens, which would other-
wise record a silent baseline of zeros for every scope), and a nested-Arc
sensitivity pair showing per-item construction costing one allocation per item
more than cloning a shared Arc.

Baseline

docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md records the baseline table with the exact
reproduction command, plus the compiler profile, feature set, pool sizes, queue
capacities, and runtime flavour the numbers hold under.

Recorded on an AMD Ryzen 9 3900 (12 cores / 24 threads), Rocky Linux 10.2,
kernel 6.12.0-211.62.1.el10_2.x86_64, 125 GiB RAM, nightly-2026-03-26.

Reproduce with:

make bench-runtime-ownership

which passes --features test-support,pool.

Regression policy

Per acceptance criterion 7, benchmark results are not correctness gates. No
absolute timing threshold is asserted anywhere; both bench binaries are
harness = false and report numbers for review. Regression decisions use ratios
between old and new implementations, or manually reviewed evidence. The
in-diff tests assert counting contracts — exact factory/transform counts and
bounded spawn counts — not durations, so a slower machine cannot fail the suite.

Recorded defects, not patched

Measurement found two pre-existing defects on the pool acquire path: a spurious
disconnected error (roughly one burst in 913 at 16 contenders) and an
intermittent stall where every tokio worker is parked with waiters still queued.
Both are recorded in docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md and belong to issue
#647 / ADR 013. This branch documents and bounds them rather than changing
ownership topology, which is #639's stated non-goal. The contended burst carries
a 30-second timeout so a stall becomes a reported error instead of hanging a
benchmark run or cargo test --all-targets; the tests that assert what a
contended burst can produce retry a bounded number of times rather than failing
on an interleaving that predates this work.

Gate status

make check-fmt, make lint (rustdoc, Clippy, Whitaker), make test,
make markdownlint (including spelling), and make nixie all pass on
56ca814. Two CodeRabbit passes were run with coderabbit review --agent; all
eight findings across them are resolved.

Note for review: make lint's rustdoc step runs without --all-features, while
its Clippy step runs with it. The feature-gated benchmark modules are therefore
Clippy-checked but never rustdoc-checked, so a broken intra-doc link inside them
passes the gate. That blind spot is recorded in the ExecPlan, and
RUSTDOCFLAGS="-D warnings" cargo doc -p wireframe_testing --no-deps --all-features
was run by hand to cover the gap.

Summary

Add reusable, instrumented benchmarks for the four runtime hot paths in issue #639: connection-actor processing, push sends, connection startup, and client-pool acquisition. See the runtime ownership execplan and baseline report.

Provide timing and allocation benchmark targets through make bench-runtime-ownership. Add direct counters for startup factory calls, middleware transformations, push capacity waits, and pool-local scheduler spawns. Separate pool construction from acquisition measurements, and report contended latency samples and failures separately. Keep benchmark durations out of correctness gates.

Record machine and measurement conditions, baseline captures, and interpretation limits. Report the observed pool stall as no longer reproducible in the recorded experiments; do not treat it as fixed. Make no ownership-topology change.

Validation

The PR description reports make check-fmt, make lint, make test, make markdownlint, and make nixie passing. Later remediation gates are also reported as passing. make test-doc remains red on an unchanged base-branch doctest, according to the author.

Walkthrough

Adds reproducible timing, allocation and contention benchmarks for actor draining, push sends, connection startup and client-pool acquisition. Adds task-churn and push-wait instrumentation, shared startup test helpers, benchmark tests and baseline documentation.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84bfb

This change adds benchmarks and measurement counters. Pool spawn and wait figures include warm-up activity, so they overstate the measured burst. Some benchmark and test checks can fail intermittently. These problems affect measurement accuracy and the reliability of the developer workflow, not production behaviour. They are reasonable to fix before or shortly after merge.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

The pull request adds user-facing public APIs without documenting them in docs/users-guide.md. PoolTaskChurn and PoolTaskChurnObserver are re-exported from wireframe::client (src/client/mod.rs:45-53), and WireframeClientPool::task_churn_observer exposes per-pool scheduler and capacity-wait observations (src/client/pool/client_pool.rs:119-154). PushWaitCounters is re-exported from wireframe::push (src/push/mod.rs:23-32), and PushHandle::wait_counters exposes awaited capacity probes and waits (src/push/queues/handle.rs:218-236). The existing pool and push sections are in the user guide (docs/users-guide.md:1640-1738 and 2118-2152), but the guide contains no references to these APIs or their semantics. The pull request does not change the user guide. The developers' guide and Rustdoc do not satisfy the explicit user's-guide requirement.

Resolution

Update docs/users-guide.md in the Client pools and Push queues sections. Document task_churn_observer, PoolTaskChurnObserver::snapshot, the per-pool scheduler_spawns and capacity_waits counters, and snapshot deltas. Document wait_counters, PushWaitCounters::since, capacity_probes, and awaited_capacity_waits, including the difference between awaited back-pressure and reported_queue_full. Add a short signpost to the applicable n+1 migration guide, docs/v0-3-0-to-v0-4-0-migration-guide.md, because the check requires new functionality to be signposted there.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The developer guide documents the new runtime-ownership benchmark helpers, feature gate, benchmark command, timing/allocation targets, and contended-pool reporting at docs/developers-guide.md:1055-1070. However, the new execplan is not up to date: docs/execplans/issue-639-establish-runtime-ownership-and-task-churn-baselines.md:338-343 still has an unchecked task to update docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md, while the same plan records the corrected baseline as complete at lines 2460-2464 and the baseline document contains the corrected capture at lines 117-124. This violates the requirement that a new execplan reflect completed progress.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

A property test is warranted for the new contended-latency distribution, but the pull request uses only fixed examples. ContendedLatency::push_sample maintains sorted order for arbitrary insertion order, and percentile maps every non-empty sample count to a nearest-rank index (wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/client_pool_benchmark_support/measurement/distribution/mod.rs:79-89, 180-225). The tests cover only one three-value ordering, sample counts 1–3 for the median, and one ten-value p90 case (.../measurement/distribution/tests.rs:44-107). The invariant spans many orderings and lengths, so the small table does not give sufficient coverage. The new integration-test module explicitly chooses rstest instead of property tests (tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers.rs:1-13).

Resolution

Add a proptest test for ContendedLatency in wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/client_pool_benchmark_support/measurement/distribution/tests.rs. Generate bounded vectors of arbitrary durations in arbitrary insertion order. Assert that stored samples are sorted and preserve the generated multiset, that min, max, median, and p90 match a simple sorted-vector nearest-rank model for every non-empty length, and that failure counts remain exact while retained messages remain capped. Add proptest to wireframe_testing development dependencies, or place the test in a package that already declares it. Keep the existing finite enum and boundary-case tests.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

The pull request adds a new compile-time feature boundary without trybuild coverage. wireframe_testing/Cargo.toml:13-18 defines runtime-benchmarks, and wireframe_testing/src/lib.rs:32-33 conditionally exposes runtime_ownership_benchmarks. The existing trybuild runner in tests/compile_error.rs:4-13 covers older wireframe contracts only. The new integration tests compile with the feature enabled through Cargo.toml:65, so they do not verify the feature-off boundary or a compile-fail contract. The workload labels have focused semantic checks and deterministic doctest examples; the dynamic benchmark measurements are not suitable for snapshots.

Resolution

Add trybuild coverage for the new public compile-time surface. Include a feature-enabled pass case that imports the runtime-ownership modules and APIs, and a feature-disabled compile-fail case that attempts the gated import. Run both cases in the corresponding wireframe_testing feature configurations and commit the expected diagnostics. Add focused snapshots only for stable label output if exact label compatibility is part of the contract; exclude durations, allocation counts, timestamps and other nondeterministic benchmark output.

**Correct the `PushMeasurement::drained` field doc.**

The doc says `drained` is "non-zero only for the uncontended scenarios". That is false:
- `send_drained` reports `received` for `DrainedHigh` and `DrainedLow`.
- `send_backpressure` reports `received` for `BackpressureHigh`.
- The tests assert `drained == sends` for both regimes.

Only the overflow scenarios report zero. This is a public field, so callers read this contract.

Remove the warm-up churn from the measured counters.

PoolHarness::measure seeds the accumulator with PhaseOutcome::seed(0, self.warmup_churn, alive_tasks()). PhaseOutcome::accumulate then adds each phase onto that running churn. As a result, PoolMeasurement::scheduler_spawns and PoolMeasurement::capacity_waits always include the warm-up acquire/release.

This breaks two things:

  1. The module docs disagree with the code. client_pool_benchmark_support/mod.rs Lines 54-59 state that warm-up is "excluded from the timing, the counters, and the live-task bracket". The code adds it to the counters.
  2. One test assertion proves nothing. uncontended_acquisition_spawns_at_least_one_scheduler_task (case (1, 1)) and the >= 1 check in uncontended_acquisition_does_not_spawn_pool_scheduler_tasks both pass on the warm-up spawn alone. A regression that stops the measured burst from reaching kick would not fail them.

The double counting also skews the recorded results:

  • The upper bound <= 2 * acquisitions is charged one extra spawn.
  • Each Criterion iter_custom call charges the warm-up churn again.
  • The recorded baseline figures "1, 1, 2" therefore cannot be separated from warm-up.

Seed with zero churn. If the warm-up figure is still wanted, report it separately, in the same way construction is reported separately from elapsed.

🐛 Proposed fix
-        let mut totals = PhaseOutcome::seed(0, self.warmup_churn, alive_tasks());
+ // Warm-up churn is outside every counted window, as the module docs state.
+        let mut totals = PhaseOutcome::seed(0, PoolTaskChurn::default(), alive_tasks());

Then do the following:

  • Remove the warmup_churn field, or expose it as a separate PoolMeasurement field.
  • Update the PhaseOutcome::seed doc in phase.rs.
  • Re-capture the spawn figures quoted in docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md.

Report the awaited wait counters for the push scenarios.

The comment states that awaited_capacity_waits is "Reported through the throughput event below rather than discarded". No such event exists. time_push only passes the value to black_box and returns elapsed. The drained scenarios exist to report this count:

  • PushScenario::DrainedHigh doc: "the wait counters are reported rather than asserted".
  • Line 210 of this file: "the reported wait count says whether it did".

As written, the drained_*_capacity_64_sends_1024 rows publish a timing, but nothing records whether that timing measured the fast path or the parked path.

Emit a tracing::info! event per workload with awaited_capacity_waits and capacity_probes, in the same way the contended pool observation is emitted. Emit it once per workload, not once per Criterion iteration. For example, take one measure_push(workload, 1) reading in push_scope before registering the group.

The measured spawn and wait counters include warm-up churn. This contradicts the documented bracket, and the at-least-one-spawn assertions pass on the warm-up spawn alone. minor benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs 321-329 The drained push scenarios claim to report wait counts, but the timing binary never emits them. minor docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md 144-144 The baseline document links to the churn source with a broken relative path. I did not run the code, so I cannot confirm how many spawns the warm-up contributes to each recorded figure. The zero-iteration allocation-bracket equality runs on a multi-thread runtime with live background pool and server tasks. I did not verify whether it is stable. The percentile rank arithmetic and the empty-sample mean handling are correct. The contended burst spawns its contenders before it waits for the forced capacity waits, so exhaustion is observed rather than raced. ```

Owner Author

@coderabbitai please assess the implementation in this PR for completeness and correctness against the original GitHub issue:

## Summary

Establish reproducible baselines for the hot paths covered by Epic #635 before changing their ownership topology.

The refactor is primarily justified by clearer lifetime boundaries, but it also claims reductions in atomic refcount operations, allocations, route preparation, and scheduler task churn. Capture enough evidence to distinguish a real improvement from an attractive ownership diagram.

## Scope

Add focused benchmarks or instrumented test harnesses for:

1. **Connection actor event processing**
   - process a fixed number of queued frames through the actor loop;
   - cover cancellation disabled and cancellation triggered;
   - record throughput and allocation count where practical.

2. **Push handle send path**
   - uncontended high- and low-priority sends into a draining queue;
   - queue-full/backpressure path separately;
   - avoid rate-limiter timing dominating the ownership measurement.

3. **Application connection startup**
   - connect and close many short-lived connections;
   - run with representative route and middleware counts;
   - count factory invocations and middleware-chain transformations;
   - capture latency/allocations before and after one-time application preparation.

4. **Client pool acquisition**
   - uncontended acquire/drop for pool sizes 1, 4, and 16;
   - contended acquisition under FIFO and round-robin policies;
   - count scheduler task creation or otherwise prove task count remains stable;
   - record allocations and latency distributions.

## Method

- Reuse existing Criterion and allocation-counting support where it fits rather than introducing a second benchmark framework.
- Keep transport I/O out of microbenchmarks unless the scenario is explicitly connection startup.
- Record compiler profile, feature set, pool size, queue capacity, and runtime flavour.
- Prefer black-box behavioural counters over source-code grep assertions.
- Store a concise baseline table in the benchmark module documentation or a dedicated document under `docs/`, with the exact command required to reproduce it.

## Acceptance criteria

- [ ] A benchmark or instrumented harness exists for each of the four scopes above.
- [ ] The current implementation has a recorded baseline on one named development machine or CI runner class.
- [ ] Factory invocation and middleware transformation counts are directly asserted, not inferred from timing.
- [ ] Pool scheduler task creation is directly observable through test instrumentation or a stable runtime counter.
- [ ] Allocation measurements identify whether nested `Arc` removal changes allocation count as expected.
- [ ] The harnesses remain useful after the refactor and can compare old/new implementations without rewriting the scenarios.
- [ ] Benchmark results do not become correctness gates with brittle absolute timing thresholds; regression policy uses ratios or manually reviewed evidence.

## Non-goals

- Proving that every atomic operation has a measurable end-to-end impact.
- Replacing existing codec performance benchmarks.
- Treating performance evidence as a substitute for ADR review.

## Dependencies

This issue can land before ADR decisions are accepted and should precede the larger implementation work under #637 and #638.

@leynos Treat this PR as substantial baseline infrastructure, but do not mark #639 complete yet. Correct the pool measurement boundaries, isolate scheduler counters, and verify the workload regimes before using these results to judge the ownership refactors.

I inspected PR #756 at commit 7a7b70b. This assessment uses source inspection and the recorded evidence. I did not build or run repository code, so runtime correctness and the reported gate results remain unverified.

Acceptance criteria

Criterion Assessment
1. Harness for all four scopes Met structurally. All four helpers exist. Some measurement regimes need correction.
2. Recorded baseline for the current implementation Partial. The named machine and reproduction command are documented. The recorded measurements predate the scheduler rework adopted during rebase.
3. Direct factory and middleware assertions Met. Counters increment at the actual operations. Tests assert exact counts.
4. Observable scheduler task creation Met structurally. PoolScheduler::kick increments a real counter. Concurrent tests can contaminate its deltas.
5. Allocation sensitivity to Arc removal Met as a sensitivity control. The probes distinguish shared clones from fresh allocations. They do not establish a future refactor’s allocation reduction.
6. Reusable old/new scenarios Largely met. Data-based workloads and shared helpers provide a sound structure. Correct the measurement boundaries first.
7. No brittle timing gates Met in intent and implementation. Criterion results support manual comparison. The timeouts bound hangs rather than define performance targets.

Correct these measurement defects

1. Exclude pool construction and transport I/O from acquisition measurements — high priority

In wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/client_pool_benchmark_support/measurement/mod.rs, Line 164 starts the timer before pool_once. Each iteration then builds a pool and closes it.

In the sibling measurement/phase.rs, Line 73 calls build_preamble_pool. That fixture binds a TCP listener and establishes real loopback connections. Line 95 closes the pool before the outer timer stops.

The allocation binary also counts the entire helper call. Its pool allocation count therefore includes fixture construction and connection setup.

Only the task counters exclude construction. The timings and allocation counts do not. This conflicts with the issue’s instruction to keep transport I/O outside microbenchmarks except connection startup. It also invalidates attribution of the documented pool-size timing increase solely to acquisition cost.

Build and warm the pool outside the timing and allocation windows. Measure acquire/drop inside those windows. Report construction costs separately if required.

2. Isolate scheduler spawn deltas — high priority

src/client/pool/scheduler_spawns.rs, Line 36 defines a process-global counter. The helper subtracts snapshots around one workload.

The pool tests run as ordinary parallel tests. A fresh Tokio runtime isolates runtime metrics, but it does not isolate this static counter. Another test’s scheduler spawns can inflate the measured delta and break the upper-bound assertion.

Use pool-local instrumentation, or serialize every pool workload that contributes to the process-global counter within each test process. Serializing only the assertion site is insufficient.

3. Prove contention instead of inferring it from task creation — medium priority

In measurement/contended.rs, Line 95 starts each contender behind a barrier. Each contender then calls acquire_round, which immediately drops every granted lease.

A start barrier does not guarantee overlapping lease ownership or pool exhaustion. A task can complete several immediately-ready acquisitions before another task runs.

The positive scheduler-spawn assertion does not prove contention either. This PR correctly demonstrates that uncontended releases also spawn scheduler tasks.

Hold leases long enough to force competing acquisitions to wait. Assert an observable waiting or exhaustion event before releasing capacity. Keep scheduler spawn counts as task-churn evidence, not as proof that contention occurred.

4. Verify that the “uncontended” push path excludes backpressure — medium priority

The timing workloads send 1,024 frames into a queue with capacity 64. The consumer runs in a separate task.

push_with_priority awaits capacity when the queue fills. A draining consumer does not guarantee that the producer never waits. Moreover, send_uncontended always reports reported_queue_full: false; that field does not observe capacity waits.

Add an observable no-backpressure condition to the uncontended scenario. Keep awaited capacity waits in a separate backpressure scenario. The existing non-blocking overflow scenarios are useful, but they do not isolate awaited backpressure.

Close these completeness gaps

  • Record contended latency distributions. benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs, Line 434 runs one observation per fairness policy. A single elapsed value is not a distribution. Retain bounded failures, but collect repeated successful samples and report failed attempts separately. Do not silently retry failures into successful timing samples.
  • Refresh the current pool baseline and identify its source revision. The ExecPlan explicitly states that the recorded numbers came from the pre-Simplify client pool waiter state transitions #535 scheduler. Post-rebase defect experiments do not refresh the timing and allocation tables. Preserve historical results under their original revision, then capture corrected measurements for the current implementation.
  • Justify or expand the startup workload. The benchmark uses one or two routes, two middleware layers, and one or four connections per iteration. This demonstrates preparation amortization, but gives limited evidence for “representative” application sizes. Add a larger case or explain why these sizes represent the intended use.

Retain the sound parts

Retain the four fallible measurement entry points, shared workload data, separate timing and allocation binaries, and exact startup counter assertions.

Retain the allocation controls. The recorded Arc probe counts—1 shared allocation versus 256 fresh allocations—correctly demonstrate a delta of 255.

Keep the pre-existing pool defects outside this PR’s implementation scope. Documenting them and bounding hangs is appropriate. Do not treat those defects as a reason to declare missing measurements complete.

Complete the measurement corrections, recapture the affected baselines, and then close #639. No ownership-topology refactor is required to address these gaps.

Address the seven items raised in the PR #756 review: four measurement
defects and three completeness gaps.

Measurement defects:

- Build and warm the pool outside the timing and allocation windows, and
report construction cost separately. `PoolHarness` now owns that bracket
and is passed to the measuring code, so nothing inside a window can
construct anything. This removes a `pool_size`-scaling TCP handshake
  term from every timed iteration.
- Scope the churn counters to the pool rather than the process. A global
`AtomicU64` gave a correct reading only when one pool was live, and the
benchmark binaries run several. `PoolTaskChurnObserver` now lives in the
pool's own shared state (`src/client/pool/churn.rs`), replacing
`scheduler_spawns.rs`. Serializing the assertion sites would not have
sufficed: the counters are read inside the measurement window.
- Sample contended bursts as a distribution rather than one elapsed value,
with failures counted and reported beside the successes. A failed burst
is never retried into a timing sample.
- Separate awaited back-pressure from the uncontended regime with an
observable counter, and add an explicit no-backpressure assertion.

Completeness gaps:

- Refresh the current pool baseline and identify its source revision,
preserving the original capture under `d28b54e`.
- Justify the startup workload sizes and add a larger case.

Also split `measurement/distribution.rs` into a directory module: whitaker's
`module_max_lines` lint rejected the file at 450 lines against the 400
limit. The split is at the type/tests seam and changes no public surface.

The recapture is confounded by machine state — the load averaged 10-15 on
24 threads from other work — so scopes whose code is byte-identical moved
1.3-2.1x between captures. No cross-capture timing delta is attributed to
the correction; the bracket's existence is instead proved by a
deterministic zero-iteration equality in the allocation binary.

Two claims in the documentation were found to describe experiments that
were never performed, and are corrected to cite the evidence actually
gathered: a validation "across 20 readings" of the bracket check, and a
pool allocation spread that mixed two measurement boundaries.

Measurement corrections, recapture, and gate remediation

Addressed at 716db83, on top of the 7a7b70b the review assessed. Two
commits: b57f9a2 carries the corrections and the recapture, 716db83 the
test-hygiene fix.

The four measurement defects

1 — Pool built and warmed outside the timing and allocation windows.
PoolHarness now owns that bracket and is passed to the measuring code, so
nothing inside a window can construct anything. Construction cost is still
reported, as its own figure on PoolMeasurement::construction. The original
measure_pool_acquisition timed a loop whose every iteration built and closed
a pool inside the clock; bb8 connects eagerly, so that put pool_size
loopback handshakes inside every timed iteration.

2 — Churn counters scoped to the pool, not the process.
PoolTaskChurnObserver moved into the pool's own shared state
(src/client/pool/churn.rs); scheduler_spawns.rs was deleted. As the review
noted, serializing only the assertion sites would not have sufficed — the
counters are read inside the measurement window, so a concurrent pool
contaminates the reading, not merely the comparison afterwards.

3 — Contended bursts sampled as a distribution. ContendedLatency with
min/median/p90/max/mean over successful samples, failure_count and the first
8 messages reported beside them. A failed burst is recorded and the loop moves
to the next attempt; it is never retried into a timing sample, and a failure
contributes no duration.

4 — Awaited back-pressure separated from the uncontended regime.
PushMeasurement::awaited_capacity_waits distinguishes them, since
reported_queue_full is set only by the non-blocking path and is false for
every awaited scenario. UncontendedHigh asserts it is zero and that
capacity_probes is non-zero, so "no waits" cannot pass by having measured
nothing; BackpressureHigh asserts it is non-zero. Scheduler spawn counts are
kept as churn evidence only, never as proof contention occurred.

The three completeness gaps

  • Contended latency is now a distribution with failures counted separately.
  • The pool baseline was recaptured and its source revision identified; the
original capture is retained under d28b54e.
  • The startup workload sizing is justified and a larger case added.

A confound that is stated rather than hidden

The recapture ran under a load average of 10–15 on 24 threads from other work.
Scopes whose measurement code is byte-identical between captures moved
1.3–2.1×, so no cross-capture timing delta is attributed to the correction.
Within-capture relationships survive; the bracket's existence is proved
separately by a deterministic zero-iteration equality in the allocation
binary, which is not a timing measurement at all.

Two documentation claims withdrawn

The verification sweep found two statements describing experiments never
performed:

  • A validation "across 20 readings" of the bracket check, with the unbracketed
window reading "50 or 51". The shipped check takes one reading per window
and asserts a direction, not a magnitude. Both documents now cite the
    five-reading probe actually run.
  • A pool allocation spread presented as "five captures of the same binary" that
in fact mixed two measurement boundaries. Corrected to the post-correction
captures, and the spread corrected from ~25% to ~33%.

Gate remediation

scrutineer reported three red gates on the first pass; all three are fixed:

  • make lint — Whitaker module-max-lines rejected
measurement/distribution.rs at 450 lines. Split at the type/tests seam
    into distribution/mod.rs (277) and distribution/tests.rs (172), matching
the pattern client_pool_benchmark_support/mod.rs already uses. No
#[allow]. All 10 tests retain their paths.
  • make markdownlint — one MD013 at docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md:215
from a manual rewrap. Note mdtablefix --check passed on the same line, so
the two Markdown gates disagreed; make fmt is the authority for wrapping.
  • make test — a real intermittent failure in
    benchmark_alloc_support::tests::counting_window_closes_after_success,
about one run in five, reproducing in isolation. Two tests assert on the
process-global ALLOCATION_COUNTING_ENABLED flag and race each other. Both
are now #[serial]. This is the same process-global-state class as defect 2,
in a test fixture rather than in production instrumentation — but there the
remedy is serialization rather than re-scoping, because the counting
allocator genuinely is a process-wide singleton owned by no pool.

Resulting gate state: fmt, check-fmt, lint, typecheck, test (1328
passed, 0 failed), test-bdd (204 passed), markdownlint, nixie, spelling
all green.

One gate left red, deliberately, and not this branch's defect

make test-doc fails E0283 on the run_with_shutdown doctest at
src/server/runtime/server.rs:228. That file's blob is identical at HEAD and
origin/main
(9d3b742d3ae4696d8132d5f29bd9e29b1f38a261), it is outside this branch's
change surface, and the feature environment that would govern the ambiguity is
unchanged (wireframe's dev-dep feature list is identical at
origin/main:Cargo.toml:64). It is inherited from the merge-base commit
ef858aa and is recorded as a base-branch fix rather than folded into this
work. Worth noting separately: no CI workflow references test-doc, so it
does not gate main either.

Pre-existing pool defects left out of scope

The two pool acquire-path defects remain documented and bounded, not fixed
here, as the review directed.

Scope tolerance

The ExecPlan's scope ceiling is 25 files / 2,500 net lines. This branch is at
57 paths and roughly 9,050 net lines against origin/main. That was already
breached and recorded in the Decision log before this round; the remediation
widens it without introducing a new class of change. Flagging it here since it
exceeds what the plan permits without escalation.

tracing-reported counts.
- Around line 108-113: Update the documentation around PUSH_QUEUE_CAPACITY and
run_measurement to state that this binary reports allocation counts only and
drops the measurement counters; clarify that the push wait counters are reported
in the timing binary, not here.
- Line 369: Update run_pool_acquisition to return the measured acquisition
Duration, starting timing after PoolHarness::build and stopping before
harness.close. Change the replay and time_iterations flow to use and sum
returned durations rather than timing the entire replay call; keep

the existing [[bench]] entry to use the new main.rs root.
- Around line 618-625: Update count_pool_acquisition_window so the
zero-iteration allocation guard runs without concurrent allocation-capable

settled_alive_tasks() as a quiescence guarantee.

focused on returning the measured elapsed time.

Review comments at @docs/runtime-ownership-baselines.md:

- Around line 641-643: Update the comparison in the paragraph around the
spawn-count discussion to replace “two orders of magnitude” with the measured
ratio: contended runs produced 16 spawns per burst versus 1–2 uncontended, or
roughly eightfold to sixteenfold. Keep the surrounding allocation-count
statement unchanged.

Review comments at @src/client/pool/churn.rs:
- Around line 54-61: Correct the spawn-count documentation near `kick` to allow
zero workers when an earlier servicing worker remains active, stating the bound
as 0..=2n or explicitly requiring the scheduler to be idle at burst start.

assertions match the documented condition.

Review comments at @tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers.rs:

unchanged.
- Around line 154-156: Split the oversized Rust files so each remains within the
400-line limit. In tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers.rs (154-156), move
the V-O sections into sibling modules under
tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers/mod.rs and add an explicit [[test]]
target in Cargo.toml. In benches/runtime_ownership_baselines_alloc.rs (516-661),
move verify_allocation_harness, the Arc probes,
verify_pool_bracket_excludes_construction and pool_bracket_readings into a
sibling #[path] module. In benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs (523-602),
move the contended-acquisition reporting and workload tables into a sibling
#[path] module. In
wireframe_testing/src/runtime_ownership_benchmarks/client_pool_benchmark_support/tests.rs
(13-50), move contended_burst_with_retry and the contended cases into
tests/contended.rs.

Add the ExecPlan entries for the restack onto
`origin/harden-lint-connection-fragment` and the validation that followed,
keeping the plan usable as the continuing record of this work.

Progress records the boundary evidence (`ef858aa..84bfbf3` as the owned
series, proven rather than guessed), the per-commit `range-diff` result, the
two conflict resolutions whose obvious answer was wrong, and the post-restack
defect the merge introduced.

Surprises records that the ambient `weave` merge driver corrupts files while
exiting cleanly, with the four observed modes and the artefact scan that
follows from them.

Decision log records the per-conflict authority rule, and the reasoning for
treating the local `mdtablefix` failure as tool drift rather than repairing
it here.

Two environmental findings are recorded with evidence instead of being folded
into the branch: `make check-fmt`'s `mdtablefix` half is red only because this
host runs 0.6.1 against CI's pinned 0.6.0, and the spelling gate rewrites
`typos.toml` from a newer shared dictionary on a pristine tree. Neither is
this branch's to fix, and committing either would publish an unrelated change.

`make check-fmt` reflowed three paragraphs in the new outcomes section
(+13 -13). `mdtablefix` is the wrap authority for this repository, so its
choice of breaks governs; a hand-wrap that keeps every line within 80
columns still fails the gate when the breaks differ.

Pure rewrap: the prose is byte-identical once newlines are normalised,
and the file stays at 2484 lines.
Note in `Progress` that the mandatory `Outcomes & retrospective` section
was added, that the scope-breach figure was corrected to its canonical
merge-base numstat, and that `check-fmt` then caught a hand-wrap in the
new prose which `make fmt` reflowed.

Record why no code gate was invalidated: every path changed since the
code-gated head is a `.md`.
`make spelling` in CI rejected `normalised` and demanded `normalized`.
The estate dictionary is en-GB-oxendict but pins `normalize` as the
correct form, so the `-ise` spelling is a violation regardless of the
general rule.

The local gate run that preceded this commit was green because it ran
before the offending line existed; the line was written afterwards and
not re-gated. Re-ran `make spelling` over the corrected tree (exit 0) and
confirmed the gate still detects this class of error with a seeded
negative control, which reported exit 2 and the identical diagnostic.
The gate mandates `-ize` where the convention's name suggests `-ise`, and
a gate run only vouches for the tree it ran against. Also record that
the gate reads tracked files only, so an untracked probe file cannot
serve as a negative control.
The rebase onto `harden-lint-connection-fragment` conflicted in
`Cargo.lock`: the target pins `thiserror` at 2.0.20 where this branch's
commits were resolved against 2.0.21. The base branch's lockfile was taken
verbatim, as instructed, and regenerated here.

`wireframe_testing` gained a `serial_test` dev-dependency in the
allocation-window work, so the rebuild adds that one edge to its package
stanza. Nothing else changes: the crate was already resolved and already a
workspace dev-dependency, and the target's `thiserror` pin survives the
rebuild.

Add the Progress entries for the second compile repair and for the audit
of every file both sides of the merge changed.

The repair entry records the `E0271` on `tests/prepared_app/mod.rs`, the
ancestry probe that attributed it to a latent defect in the commit that
introduced the shared factory rather than to the rebase, and the clean
`cargo check` that followed.

The audit entry records how each of the ten dual-changed files resolves
to a deliberate union: the two prepared-application test files that both
sides restructured, the scheduler carrying the target's layout with this
branch's counters, and the clean unions in the manifests and module
facades. It also records the content-level check that `#722`'s
dead-letter fix survived the move into `dlq.rs`, which SHA ancestry
cannot answer once a rebase has replayed the commits, and the two stale
path references that belong to the base lag rather than to this branch.

Plan only; no behaviour changes.
Note that the 23 client-pool benchmark-support tests pass, and why the two
capacity-wait assertions are worth running together: one holds
`capacity_waits == 0` when a single caller never contends, the other
requires `capacity_waits >= contenders` when a burst holds the pool
empty. Recording the counter in the `else` branch satisfies both, while
the position the merge produced satisfies only the second.

Plan only; no behaviour changes.
Add the `make test` result for the rebased candidate: exit 0 across 83
test binaries, 1313 passed, 0 failed, with both compile repairs confirmed
by the absence of `E0271` and `E0382` and by all three `prepared_app`
binaries running.

Record why `make check-fmt` reports `docs/execplans/adopt-shared-
mutation-workflow.md` and why the file was deliberately left alone. The
flag is tool drift, not content: the local `mdtablefix` is 0.6.1 while CI
pins 0.6.0. Local 0.6.1 rejects the target's inherited copy and accepts
the copy on `origin/main` that `b479338` re-wrapped, and CI run
`35963755221` passed on the very commit whose tree carries the identical
blob. Reformatting would edit a file this branch never touched, in a tree
that will re-inherit it from main when the stack rebases.
Add the `make typecheck` result for the final head: exit 0, no errors,
with only the expected sccache-unreachable notices. Record the
standalone `mbake validate Makefile` pass that the branch's Makefile edit
requires.

Strengthen the support for leaving the `make check-fmt` flag alone by
quoting the CI job log rather than inferring from the run conclusion. The
log shows CI installing `MDTABLEFIX_VERSION: 0.6.0` and then reporting
`116 files left unchanged` with nothing flagged. Reconcile the counts to
show the two tools disagree on exactly one input, a stale copy of a file
neither this branch nor CI changed:

    CI (0.6.0): 116 unchanged + 0 flagged
    local (0.6.1): 117 unchanged + 1 flagged = 118
    118 - 116 = 2 = the 2 Markdown files this branch adds
Add the `make lint` result for the final head: exit 0 across all three
stages — doc (9m03s), clippy (13m06s) and Whitaker (17m32s) — with zero
warnings under `-D warnings`.

Add a terminal gate table so the acceptance state is readable without
parsing the per-gate Progress entries, and state explicitly which
revision each gate saw. The code gates did not all run at one revision,
which is sound only because `git diff --name-only 701f343 HEAD` returns
zero non-`.md` paths; recording the revisions is what makes that checkable
rather than asserted. `check-fmt` is listed as drift rather than waived.
The branch was retargeted from the connection-fragment layer onto
`origin/main` at the user's request. Record the replay in the living
plan: boundary evidence, the eight conflicts and their resolutions, the
three commits dropped as empty, and the two `harden-lint` findings the
replay falsified.

The boundary moves to `OLD_BASE` `69d8fdc7`, `OLD_HEAD` `661fce8a` and
`TARGET` `3c50de2a`, with an owned series of 44 commits and 0 merges.

Mark the two superseded `harden-lint` claims in place rather than
deleting them. The claim that the previous target deliberately dropped
`from_app_serves_concurrent_tcp_connections_from_one_prepared_root` is
false: the test is absent at `OLD_BASE` but present at both `TARGET` and
the new head, in `tests/prepared_app_tcp.rs` line 91. The companion
claim that the `39221cf` bound mismatch was a latent defect in
`5f31996`, not a rebase artefact, is likewise superseded: it was an
artefact of the previous target's module layout and does not arise
against main.

Add two discoveries and two decision-log entries. A restack's recorded
resolutions are evidence about its target, so replaying onto a different
target invalidates them and they must be re-derived rather than
replayed. A lockfile conflict can be narrower than the lockfile diff:
taking main's side wholesale satisfied the letter of the lockfile rule
while shipping a lockfile that cannot satisfy `--locked`, because the
one edge this branch contributes fell outside the reported hunk.

Extend the retrospective with the replay's cost and outcome, and correct
the `test-doc` residual to say the base rather than the merge base, now
that `src/server/runtime/server.rs` is byte-identical between the target
and the branch head.

`build-test` run 38947673516 failed at the en-GB-oxendict spelling step
on the American spelling of "artefact" at this plan, line 2872. The line
was written in `4366ec1`, after the last local spelling run, so the fix
had never been gated.

The new progress entry also records the decisive evidence for the
pending lint question: on the same run the `Lint` step passed before the
spelling step failed, so rustdoc, Clippy and `whitaker --all` are green
on the published head in an environment that does not contend with this
host's compile admission. Two local attempts had been aborted by
admission refusals rather than by any diagnostic pointing at repository
source.

That verdict also settles the 400-line question. The four benchmark and
test files over 400 lines are not flagged by whitaker, so the stale
review finding citing the guide's 400-line figure describes guidance
rather than an enforced rule for those paths. The observation is
recorded with that distinction so a later reader does not mistake an
unenforced guideline for a passing gate.

`make spelling`, `make check-fmt` and `make markdownlint` all exit 0 on
the corrected tree; `typos.toml` is unchanged by the regeneration.

Address the 21 inline review comments on PR #756. Fifteen were implemented;
six were rebutted with evidence, and the rebuttals are recorded in the
ExecPlan's Decision log.

- The push capacity counter records a wait on the first `Pending` poll of
the send future rather than at the `Full` refusal. A refusal only says a
poll *would* park, so counting it reported suspensions that never
happened. The new `await_send_capacity` helper holds the poll loop, and
`record_first_pending` holds the predicate, keeping both under the
repository's nesting threshold without a lint suppression.
- `PoolHarness` no longer folds warm-up churn into its totals: the delta a
caller reads now covers only the phases that were bracketed.
- `measure_push` folds every round through `SendOutcome::accumulate`, so
all of its counters describe one run instead of the last round.
- The allocation bench registers stable Criterion IDs and publishes its
counts as `tracing` events. A count inside the ID made every run a new
benchmark with nothing to compare against and a fresh directory under
`target/criterion`. The pool replay returns its measured `Duration` so
construction and teardown sit outside the timed span, and the
zero-iteration guard runs on a dedicated current-thread runtime.
- The timing bench emits one push wait-counter event per workload from
`main`, after `final_summary`, rather than from `time_push` where
Criterion calls it on every iteration.
- Docs and tests were corrected in step: the broken `churn.rs` link, the
  `scheduler_spawns` `0..=2n` bracket with its idle-scheduler precondition,
the `drained` and `awaited_capacity_waits` field docs, the allocation-ID
prose, the misleadingly named zero-spawn test, and a floor that now rests
on successful bursts with a non-vacuity assertion.

The four 400-line findings and two related CodeRabbit findings are rebutted
as guidance-only: whitaker's `module_max_lines` cannot see out-of-line
`mod` bodies or crate roots, and the hosted lint passed on the exact
published head with those file sizes.
codescene-access[bot]

This comment was marked as outdated.

Four files added by this branch exceeded the repository's 400-line limit
for code files. Split each along its natural seam, keeping every new file
well under the limit (the largest is 265 lines):

- `benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs` becomes a thin `main.rs` plus
  `scenarios`, `driver`, and `observe`.
- `benches/runtime_ownership_baselines_alloc.rs` becomes a thin `main.rs`
  plus `scopes`, `pool_bracket`, `probes`, and `reporting`.
- `tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers.rs` becomes a `mod.rs` root
  plus `harness`, `startup`, `actor`, `push`, and `pool`.
- `client_pool_benchmark_support/tests.rs` becomes a `tests/mod.rs` root
  plus `labels`, `uncontended`, `contended`, and `sampling`.

The split preserves behaviour. All 112 single-line string literals, 136
whitespace-normalised literals, 39 `assert!`, 36 `assert_eq!`, 12
`#[test]`, and 27 `#[case::` invocations are unchanged, as are the
Criterion group names, sample size, and measurement time. The counting
allocator is still installed at the allocation binary's crate root,
because `#[global_allocator]` is per-process.

`Cargo.toml` gains explicit `path` entries for the two `[[bench]]` targets
and a new `[[test]]` entry for the helpers crate, since Cargo does not
auto-discover `tests/<name>/mod.rs`.

Also fix the zero-iteration pool bracket guard, which review flagged as a
correctness bug: it used to run after `Runtime::new()` had started worker
threads, so a worker could allocate inside a window read as pool
construction. It is now split in two. The zero-iteration half builds and
drops its own current-thread runtime before any other runtime exists, and
asserts the bracketed count is zero while the unbracketed count is
positive; the measured half asserts the measured phase is non-zero
through the benchmark runtime.

The hosted `build-test` job rejected `normalised` in the progress entry
added after the local Markdown gate had already run, so the local run
could not have caught it: the wording was written afterwards.

Write `normalized`, which is what the shared en-GB-oxendict policy
requires, and re-run `make spelling`, `make fmt`, `make check-fmt`, and
`make markdownlint` to confirm the file is clean. `typos.toml` is
unchanged.

@coderabbitai Please reconcile the review state for PR #756 at head e21a54a8a56ba1830d776a496aa235db9ebfff1c on base 3c50de2aea6a587427487e7479457b1319942e63.

Your review requested changes at 84bfbf3a943943313eb21457f4040e2f33f42b2b. Every finding from that review has since been dispositioned and the seven open threads are resolved:

  • 400-line splits (six threads, four files). benches/runtime_ownership_baselines.rs, benches/runtime_ownership_baselines_alloc.rs, tests/runtime_ownership_benchmark_helpers.rs, and client_pool_benchmark_support/tests.rs are now thin roots plus sibling modules. Largest resulting file is 265 lines. Cargo.toml gained explicit path entries for the two [[bench]] targets and a new [[test]] entry.
  • Zero-iteration bracket guard (one thread, correctness). Fixed as specified: the guard now builds and drops its own current-thread runtime before Runtime::new() exists, rather than relying on settled_alive_tasks().

The split is behaviour-preserving and was checked mechanically: 112/112 single-line string literals, 136/136 whitespace-normalized literals, 39 assert!, 36 assert_eq!, 12 #[test], and 27 #[case:: invocations are unchanged, as are both Criterion group names, the sample size of 10, and the 5-second measurement time. The allocation binary was run end to end (exit 0) and its three self-checks passed, reporting 1 allocation for the shared-clone probe against 256 for the fresh-per-item probe.

Gates on this head: make check-fmt, make lint (rustdoc, Clippy, and whitaker --all), make typecheck, make test (83 suites, 0 failures), make markdownlint, make spelling, and make nixie all pass. The only hosted failure was build-test rejecting normalised in the plan document; that word is now normalized and the spelling gate passes locally.

Please confirm each disposition against the current head and update the review decision if the substantive requirements are now met. This is a focused reconciliation of the existing review, not a request for a new full review.

@wafflecat-df12 Accept all seven dispositions. No blocker remains from the existing review at 84bfbf3a. This conclusion applies to head e21a54a8a56ba1830d776a496aa235db9ebfff1c on base 3c50de2aea6a587427487e7479457b1319942e63. Both revisions match the live PR.

Disposition checks

Finding Verified disposition
Timing benchmark file-size thread Addressed. The root and three sibling modules contain 87–265 lines.
Allocation benchmark file-size thread Addressed. The root and four sibling modules contain 115–242 lines.
Integration-test file-size thread Addressed. The root and five sibling modules contain 45–265 lines. The root retains #![cfg(not(loom))].
Client-pool test file-size thread Addressed. The root and four sibling modules contain 12–185 lines.
CodeRabbit allocation-root split thread Addressed. The global allocator remains at the root. Pool operations and bracket checks remain together in pool_bracket.rs.
CodeRabbit consolidated four-file split thread Addressed. All 20 resulting files satisfy the 400-line limit and start with //! documentation. Cargo.toml explicitly registers both benchmark roots and the integration-test root.
Zero-iteration bracket guard Addressed. The guard builds and drops its own current-thread runtime. It completes before Runtime::new() and Criterion construction. All three bracket assertions remain present.

GitHub confirms that all seven threads are resolved.

Preservation and validation

The mechanical comparison against pre-split d2ced8c confirms unchanged totals: 39 assert!, 36 assert_eq!, 12 #[test], and 27 #[case:: invocations. My single-line quoted-token comparison also found no additions or removals.

The allocation groups retain their names, sample size of 10, and 5-second measurement time. For precision, the separate timing binary uses 20 samples and 10 seconds.

The earlier repairs remain present. These include acquisition-only replay timing, stable allocation IDs, push wait reporting, exclusion of warm-up churn, and the successful-burst wait floor.

Hosted build-test now passes on this head. All other returned checks either pass or are skipped. The earlier hosted spelling failure is therefore no longer current.

Verification limit: I inspected source, revision differences, thread state, and hosted check results. I did not build or run repository code. The end-to-end allocation result remains author-reported.

Review decision

Replace the earlier change request with approval for this focused reconciliation. No new full review is needed to settle these findings. GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED; the approval action below requests the state update and will report its result.
