The Windows formatter lane compiled mdtablefix from source. It was the last
exception to this repository's rule that CI tools come from trusted prebuilt
releases, and it existed for two upstream reasons: no Windows archive was
published at all
(leynos/mdtablefix#459), and
the crate's binstall metadata declared bin-dir = ".", which cargo-binstall
rejects (leynos/mdtablefix#458).

0.5.1 fixes both, so the exception is retired.

Windows install step, before and after

Cold Warm
Before, compiling from source 66 to 77 s 0 s on a tools-cache hit
After, installing the archive expected ~2 s 0 s on a tools-cache hit

The before figures are from runs 33891104448, 33887402565, 33882903615,
33890685806 and 33885893633, each logging
no prebuilt release for Windows; building from source. The after figure will
be confirmed from this pull request's own Windows run.

What changed

Both formatter lanes now use the shared
install-mdtablefix,
pinned to c5a54701, the commit that widened it to the platforms 0.5.1
publishes.

The local .github/actions/install-mdtablefix is deleted, and so is the
.mdtablefix-build directory from both windows-gate-cache steps. That
directory existed only to keep the compile's output away from the product's
tree; with no compile, leaving it in the cache entry would archive an empty
path on every Windows run.

The Windows lane takes its version through the reusable workflow's existing
mdtablefix-version input rather than a second literal, so ci.yml remains the
one place the pin is written.

The rule is now absolute

With no exception left, the ownership contract's counting logic becomes a flat
prohibition. It asserts the permitted set is empty, so reinstating an exception
is a deliberate policy change rather than an edit; it lists both retired tools
in FORBIDDEN_SOURCE_BUILDS, checked by name; and it rejects cargo install
anywhere in any workflow or composite action.

Checking by name matters more than the count. A count of permitted builds is
satisfied by adding a tool back as a newly permitted entry, which is exactly the
regression worth catching.

ci_mdtablefix_installer_test.py is rewritten around the new arrangement. It
holds both lanes to the shared action at a full commit SHA and to a version no
earlier than 0.5.1, and requires the retired action and its build directory to
be absent rather than merely unused. Resolving the version needed care: the
Windows lane's value passes through env and then a workflow input, so a
contract that stopped at the first expression would have asserted nothing about
the lane that used to compile. I verified it bites by downgrading the pin to
0.5.0 and watching it fail.

Validation

Sequential, with per-agent target directories: make check-fmt,
lint-python, typecheck, github-actions-lint, markdownlint,
lint-clippy, lint-whitaker, nixie, doc-coverage at 99.14%, 267 workflow
contracts, and 2,798 Rust tests. All green.

Summary by Sourcery

Retire the final CI source-build exception by installing mdtablefix 0.5.1 from trusted prebuilt releases on every formatter lane.

Enhancements:

  • Standardize both formatter lanes on the shared, pinned prebuilt mdtablefix installer now that version 0.5.1 supports all required platforms.
  • Retire the local mdtablefix installer and remove obsolete Windows source-build cache paths.
  • Make the CI tool ownership policy prohibit all source builds and strengthen workflow contracts to detect retired exceptions, forbidden cargo installs, stale files, and unsupported mdtablefix versions.
  • Improve source-build detection to recognize cargo install commands with varied whitespace, options, selectors, and line continuations.

CI:

  • Update mdtablefix to version 0.5.1 through the reusable Windows workflow input and use a full commit SHA for the shared installer action.

Documentation:

  • Document that CI has no source-build exceptions and update mdtablefix installation and version guidance.

Tests:

  • Rewrite mdtablefix workflow contracts for shared-action usage, minimum supported version, version indirection, and removal of retired build artifacts.
  • Expand source-build detector coverage with parameterized and property-based tests.

The Windows formatter lane compiled mdtablefix from source, taking 66 to 77
seconds on a cold run. It was the last exception to this repository's rule that
CI tools come from trusted prebuilt releases, and it existed because mdtablefix
published no Windows archive at all (leynos/mdtablefix#459) and because its
binstall metadata declared `bin-dir = "."`, which cargo-binstall rejects
(leynos/mdtablefix#458).

0.5.1 fixes both. It publishes archives for Linux and macOS on x86_64 and
aarch64 and for Windows on x86_64, with correct metadata, so both formatter
lanes now use the shared `install-mdtablefix` action, pinned to the commit that
widened it to those platforms. The local action goes with the exception, and so
does the Windows build directory it compiled into: that directory existed only
to keep the compile's output away from the product's tree, so leaving it in the
Windows cache entry would archive an empty path on every run.

The Windows lane takes its version through the reusable workflow's own input
rather than a second literal, so `ci.yml` remains the single place the pin is
written.

With no exception left, the ownership contract's counting logic becomes an
absolute rule. Counting permitted builds made sense while there were some; now
it asserts the permitted set is empty, lists both retired tools by name, and
rejects `cargo install` anywhere in any workflow or composite action. Checking
by name matters more than the count: a count is satisfied by adding a tool back
as a newly permitted entry, which is the regression worth catching.

`ci_mdtablefix_installer_test.py` is rewritten around the new arrangement. It
holds both lanes to the shared action at a full commit SHA and to a version no
earlier than 0.5.1, resolving that version through the reusable-workflow
boundary rather than stopping at the first expression, and requires the retired
action and its build directory to be absent rather than merely unused.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 19d9c

The new policy checks can accept invalid version expressions and miss prohibited source builds in valid Cargo commands or action.yaml files. A previously identified test-import failure also remains unresolved, so these issues should be addressed before merge.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The new tests do not fully guard the version-propagation behaviour described by the pull request. In tests/workflow_contracts/ci_mdtablefix_installer_test.py, _resolve_literal() returns immediately for any literal version (if not version.startswith("${{"): return version). The minimum-version assertion then accepts that literal. Therefore, replacing the Windows step's ${{ env.MDTABLEFIX_VERSION }} with a hard-coded 0.5.1 would pass these tests, while bypassing the reusable-workflow input and allowing future version drift. The current workflow uses the intended expression, but the regression is not detected.

Resolution

Require each formatter install step to use the expected ${{ env.MDTABLEFIX_VERSION }} expression before resolving it. Then verify the Windows MDTABLEFIX_VERSION environment value comes from inputs['mdtablefix-version'] and that the caller supplies the workflow-level pin. Keep the minimum-version assertion on the resolved literal.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The pull request adds two leynos/shared-actions references at commit c5a54701c8603a0fa756a6b34c49bc2af75a6c11, but docs/developers-guide.md still states that every such reference uses e041cb75c35c3524201a32d5e57c87408fbd5874 and that one SHA covers every reference. The guide documents the new prebuilt mdtablefix policy and version, but this unchanged pin requirement is false and does not clearly document the new shared action boundary.

Resolution

Update the shared-action pin section in docs/developers-guide.md. Distinguish the e041cb75c35c3524201a32d5e57c87408fbd5874 references from the install-mdtablefix references pinned to c5a54701c8603a0fa756a6b34c49bc2af75a6c11. Replace the claim that one SHA covers every reference with an accurate rule that each shared action remains pinned to its documented full commit SHA. Keep the mdtablefix version and prebuilt-release requirements documented, then run the documentation formatting checks.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

The modified Python modules all have module docstrings, but tests/workflow_contracts/source_build_data.py is now inaccurate. Its docstring says that one documented source-build exception remains, while the pull request changes SOURCE_BUILD_EXCEPTIONS to an empty mapping and forbids both retired tools. The module therefore does not clearly document the current policy or its utility.

Resolution

Update the module docstring in tests/workflow_contracts/source_build_data.py to state that no source-build exceptions remain. Describe that the module parses cargo install commands in workflows and composite actions, and identify its use by cache_ownership_test.py and source_build_detector_test.py.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The new tests cover useful workflow wiring and parser edge cases, but they leave explicit gaps. source_build_commands() matches # cargo install some-tool and echo 'cargo install some-tool'; the purported comment test uses # cargo installs are forbidden, which does not exercise that case. The mdtablefix tests only inspect YAML and action references. They do not exercise the shared action's Windows archive installation or verify the installed version at the workflow boundary. The commit-SHA assertion also checks length only, not hexadecimal content.

Resolution

Add exact comment, quoted-string, and command-boundary cases. Either make the detector shell-aware and ignore comments/non-command text, or document and test its conservative textual policy. Validate shared-action references as 40 lowercase hexadecimal characters. Add an integration/end-to-end Windows workflow check that runs the pinned shared installer and asserts mdtablefix --version returns the configured version.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

The pull request introduces a range-based parsing invariant but adds only example-based tests. The changed _CARGO_INSTALL regex accepts arbitrary whitespace and optional toolchain selectors, and joined_commands accepts line continuations. source_build_detector_test.py checks a small set of spellings, but it does not generate combinations or arbitrary values. The repository already supports Hypothesis, including for Python tests, so the missing property coverage is actionable.

Resolution

Add a Hypothesis property test for source_build_commands. Generate valid whitespace, optional +toolchain selectors, and shell line-continuation placements, then assert that each generated cargo install form is detected. Generate non-install forms such as cargo binstall and other subcommands and assert that they are not detected. Retain the parameterized cases for named edge cases.

This comment was marked as outdated.

The absolute prohibition searched for the literal "cargo install ", which
`cargo install`, a tab, `cargo +nightly install` and a line continuation all
slip past while running the same command. That left the general rule enforced
only for the two tools named in the forbidden list, which is the opposite of
what "absolute" should mean.

The source-build detector already parsed commands for the by-name check, so the
sweep now uses it. Its pattern gains the toolchain selector, and five spellings
are pinned as tests alongside three that must not be flagged, `cargo binstall`
among them.

Also validate each hop before following it when resolving the pinned version.
The contract read `MDTABLEFIX_VERSION` whenever the installer passed any
expression, so a step switching to an unrelated variable would have kept
passing against the old, still-correct pin while the lane received something
else. Each hop is now checked for the reference it is about to follow.

ci.yml returns to 400 lines, and the guide takes four grammar corrections.

Scan both supported action metadata filenames.

When a composite action uses action.yaml, workflow_text excludes it, so source_build_commands(workflow_text) cannot detect cargo install. Include both supported metadata filenames.

Add a regression fixture that places cargo install in action.yaml.

direct regression cases and bounded Hypothesis coverage for valid whitespace and
pre-subcommand option sequences.

Two more holes in the same guard, both found by review.

Cargo takes global options before its subcommand, so
`cargo --config net.retry=1 install some-tool` is a source build that no
pattern anchored on `cargo install` can see. Adding another alternative to the
regex would have been the third such patch, so the detector now tokenizes:
skip a `+toolchain` selector and any options, then look at the first ordinary
word.

That raises an ambiguity the regex never had to face. `--flag install` is
either a flag followed by the subcommand or an option whose value is
`install`, and telling them apart needs cargo's own option table. It resolves
toward detection: this guards a prohibition, where a false positive is
arguable and a false negative is a hole.

Fourteen spellings are pinned by name and a Hypothesis property covers
arbitrary prefixes of selectors, flags, options with separate values, and
whitespace.

The version resolution had the same shape of defect. It accepted any
expression containing the reference it was about to follow, so a composite
such as `${{ env.MDTABLEFIX_VERSION }}${{ vars.UNRELATED }}` would satisfy it
while resolving to something else. Each hop is now compared whole, with
internal spacing collapsed so formatting cannot defeat the comparison.

CodeScene flagged the tokenizer as a Bumpy Road: skipping the prefix and
deciding the subcommand in one loop nested the option-value case two deep
inside a while.

The prefix scan becomes `_skip_prefix`, which answers one question, where the
subcommand starts. `_install_arguments` then reads as the two facts it
asserts: the first ordinary word is `install`, and everything after it is the
command.

Behaviour is unchanged; the thirteen named spellings and the property still
pass.
