Summary

This branch makes recursive workspace executable discovery an explicit
cwd_mode='workspace-recursive' opt-in. Default which and
command_available now search only PATH, preventing an empty or unset PATH
from resolving a checkout-controlled helper.

Closes #646.

Review walkthrough

Validation

  • make check-fmt: passed
  • make lint: passed
  • make doc-coverage: passed (99.14%)
  • make test: passed (2,813 nextest tests; all applicable doctests passed)

Summary by Sourcery

Require an explicit workspace-recursive mode before executable discovery can traverse the workspace, keeping PATH-only lookup as the safe default.

New Features:

  • Add an explicit workspace-recursive executable discovery mode for trusted manifests that need recursive workspace lookup.

Bug Fixes:

  • Prevent default which and command_available lookups from resolving checkout-controlled executables when PATH is empty or unset.

Enhancements:

  • Clarify the search-domain behavior of auto, always, and never, including safer handling of empty PATH values.
  • Ensure resolver caching distinguishes executable search modes and workspace-switch state.
  • Improve missing-command diagnostics with guidance for explicitly opting into recursive workspace search.
  • Update localized diagnostics across supported languages to describe the new search modes.

Documentation:

  • Document the new executable discovery contract, security rationale, and migration requirements in the design documentation, ADR, users' guide, and migration guide.
  • Record the breaking behavior change and security improvement in the changelog.

Tests:

  • Add unit, contract, feature, and integration coverage for explicit recursive lookup, PATH precedence, empty or unset PATH behavior, mode parsing, cache isolation, and Windows environment capture.

Chores:

  • Centralize strict mock environment fixtures for testing documented environment reads, including Windows PATHEXT handling.

Fixture note

The Windows panic came from an incomplete strict MockEnv fixture: it did not expect the documented PATHEXT read. The resolver did not incorrectly resolve an executable.

Summary

Make recursive workspace executable discovery an explicit cwd_mode='workspace-recursive' opt-in.

  • Keep default which and command_available lookups limited to PATH.
  • Preserve workspace-root lookup through cwd_mode='always'.
  • Retain validation, caching, skip lists, symlink handling, canonicalisation, all, direct paths, Windows PATHEXT, and cwd_mode='never'.
  • Add shared strict environment fixtures, including Windows PATHEXT coverage.
  • Expand unit, integration, platform-specific, precedence, and cache-key tests.
  • Update diagnostics and all locale messages with the new mode and search guidance.
  • Document the trust boundary and search domains in ADR-024, the design guide, user guide, developer guide, migration guide, and changelog.

Formatting, linting, documentation coverage, and test suites pass. CodeScene coverage-report delivery remains unresolved.

Walkthrough

The change makes executable lookup PATH-only by default. It adds explicit cwd_mode="workspace-recursive" support, updates resolver and cache behaviour, revises diagnostics and documentation, and adds coverage for empty, unset, and non-empty PATH cases.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The new tests cover explicit recursive lookup with an empty PATH and cover PATH precedence when PATH contains a matching executable. They do not cover the changed miss-handling case where cwd_mode='workspace-recursive' must search the workspace after a non-empty PATH has missed. The existing workspace_recursive_prefers_a_path_match test cannot detect an implementation that only performs the recursive fallback when PATH is empty, because its PATH lookup succeeds. This is a plausible regression in the changed handle_miss branch and violates the documented contract that recursive lookup runs after any flat PATH miss.

Resolution

Add a substantive unit or integration test that sets a non-empty PATH containing a directory without the requested command, places the command in a nested workspace directory, and asserts that cwd_mode='workspace-recursive' returns the exact workspace path. Also assert that the same fixture with auto (and, where relevant, never) reports no match. Keep the existing PATH-match precedence test to verify that a successful PATH lookup still wins.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

Add mode-aware observability before merging. This pull request changes resolver behaviour: CwdMode::WorkspaceRecursive is new, and handle_miss now invokes the recursive workspace walk only for that mode. This changes resolution outcomes, filesystem work, latency, and cache use. The existing WHICH_CACHE_TOTAL and WHICH_RESOLUTION_TOTAL metrics are unchanged from the base revision and expose only cache outcome, resolution outcome, and error category. The stdlib.which.resolve span also has no cwd_mode or duration field. The workspace debug messages do not provide a bounded mode-specific metric or scan timing. Maintainers therefore cannot distinguish auto misses from recursive-mode misses or measure the cost of recursive scans from production telemetry.

Resolution

Add bounded cwd_mode labels with the four fixed values (auto, always, never, workspace_recursive) to the which resolution and cache metrics. Add a resolution-duration histogram, and record recursive-scan duration or a bounded scan outcome when WorkspaceRecursive runs. Record the same mode and outcome on the resolver span. Keep command names, paths, PATH values, workspace names, and error text out of metric labels and logs. Add telemetry tests that assert the fixed label vocabulary, expected outcomes, cache outcomes, and duration samples for PATH-only and recursive lookups.

PATH holds the line,
Workspace waits for consent,
Modes guide each search,
Caches keep their keys apart,
Tests guard the empty path,
Clear hints light the way.

Seek a systemic fix rather than tactical. Ask yourself, can this happen again or happen elsewhere? If so, think about a long term fix of the underlying issue.

@coderabbitai Have the following failed checks now been resolved?

If further work is required, please provide an AI agent prompt for the remaining work needed to address these failures.

Do not treat warnings as optional or aspirational. Where a change is genuinely out of scope for this PR, propose a GitHub issue unless one exists already. Treat observability, code safety, documentation, and validation coverage as in scope.

Failed checks from the current walkthrough

Check name Status Current disposition
Testing (Overall) Error Addressed in 4fa44c20961255a95a807ab31edf007b105e12d3: tests/stdlib_which_tests.rs::workspace_recursive_prefers_a_path_match creates identically named PATH and nested-workspace executables, invokes the public which filter with cwd_mode="workspace-recursive", and asserts the PATH executable wins. make test and the hosted Linux and Windows build-test jobs pass at this head.
Developer Documentation Warning Addressed in 4fa44c20961255a95a807ab31edf007b105e12d3: docs/developers-guide.md documents all four CwdMode search domains, the recursive opt-in and kill switch, cache identity, and the strict injected capture fixture, with ADR and design links. Documentation gates pass.
Testing (Compile-Time / Ui) Warning Addressed in 2bdbed9e0f62175b50cc7f956930cccf3ad1c230: the Windows not-found snapshot now records the workspace-recursive hint. The hosted Windows build-test and lint jobs pass at 4fa44c20961255a95a807ab31edf007b105e12d3.
Observability Warning The observation accurately describes unchanged telemetry, but it is not a correctness defect or an unmet acceptance criterion for #646. This security fix deliberately preserves the existing telemetry interface; adding metrics, labels, spans, counters, and histograms would introduce a separate observability contract. Please treat it as non-blocking for this PR, or propose a scoped follow-up issue if telemetry is required.

Current base: 1e1a0f170cdba63458abed4ff48a62825990d3e9.
Current head: 4fa44c20961255a95a807ab31edf007b105e12d3.

Please recompute the named checks against this candidate and reconcile the prior review state. This is a focused follow-up, not a claim that the earlier failed review inspected this head.

@leynos

Mark this Testing (Overall) coverage finding as resolved.

tests/features/stdlib.feature Lines 97-101 now tests the required miss-handling path:

  1. It creates nested/tool.
  2. It sets PATH to the non-empty bin directory.
  3. It does not create bin/tool.
  4. It calls which('tool', cwd_mode='workspace-recursive').
  5. It asserts that resolution returns nested/tool.

This scenario exercises handle_miss after a non-empty PATH search fails. It verifies that CwdMode::WorkspaceRecursive searches the workspace only after the PATH miss.

The scenario was added in current head e7ea04c9c19d99913a8a461040c788e3fb831ce1. The hosted build-test check also passes at this head.

Do not add another test for this specific coverage gap. No AI agent prompt or follow-up issue is required.

Keep the overall CI result pending until Windows / build-test-windows, Windows / lint-windows, Windows / windows-msi-upgrade, and CodeScene Code Coverage (main) complete.

You are interacting with an AI system.

Keep the default `which` and `command_available` search domain limited to
PATH, and require `cwd_mode="workspace-recursive"` before scanning
checkout-controlled executables.

Preserve the existing recursive walk behind that explicit mode, with its
cache, skip-list, canonicalization, executable, and platform behaviour.
Document the trust boundary and update the complete test and diagnostic
coverage.
Add an accessible flow diagram showing the flat and recursive search paths
selected by each `cwd_mode` value.
Supply the complete injected capture contract in shared test fixtures,
including Windows `PATHEXT`, so strict mocks continue to detect new reads.

Classify the Windows panic as an incomplete test fixture, not an executable
resolver failure; resolver behaviour and the workspace-search security
contract remain unchanged.
Refresh the Windows not-found diagnostic for the explicit recursive\nworkspace mode and remove the migration guide's extra blank line.\n\nThese CI corrections accompany the completed MockEnv fixture contract fix;\nthe resolver behaviour remains unchanged.
Document the resolver search domains, localize its diagnostics, and make\nworkspace-recursive prefer a matching PATH entry over a nested checkout file.\n\nKeep the skip-list test independent of the ambient workspace switch and\npoint non-recursive misses to the explicit recursive mode.
State the complete `always` search order in every affected locale.
Keep the PATH fixture outside the workspace and cover a non-empty PATH
miss before the explicit recursive fallback.
